Chibi-Robo is what I would like to call a "popular unpopular" game, that quite a few people know about due to Smash Bros and Scott the Woz, but next to nobody has actually played.
I have played it! I was lucky enough to get a pal copy when it first came out. (I still have it) They released so few copies in the UK and only a few stores in the whole country got any, my local game was not among them. I only got hold of a copy because my friend who worked at our local game store picked it up especially for me during a work conference. I still remember when he surprised me with it, I was so stunned and grateful. I absolutely loved it, it's probably one of my all time favourite games. If only more people had gotten the opportunity to play it. Then we could have gotten a proper sequel, besides the Japan only Park Patrol and the 2D platformer for the DS whose name I forget.
@@Buffy52 That's great to hear! The first game is probably a collector's item now (especially since it's a niche Gamecube game, and the prices of FE: PoR do not give me hope), so you're super lucky to have it. Also, I believe Park Patrol was the DS game you were referring to. The Japanese exclusive one is (according to wikipedia) "Okaeri! Chibi-Robo! Happy Richie Ōsōji!". They both came out on the DS, so I can see where the mix up happened.
@@J.R.Unbound Thank you! That knowledge is very much appreciated. I think the fact that they are both set outdoors confused me. I would absolutely be down for more of this! It's got an immaculate PlayFrame vibe and the joy you guys are giving off is contagious. Also as cool as the premise is I don't think I'll ever actually get around to playing this one.
Woooooo, I've wanted them to play this game for so long, I feel that this just fits this channel so well. Also I personally would watch a playthrough but ultimately it's your channel and other then the patron picks I think leaving what you want to play up to you works best.
I remember reading about this game in some magazine or another, and then encountering the occasional reference to it in the 18 years since. Nice to see what it actually is. According to TV Tropes, it wasn't much of a hit even in Japan. It seems to have been more popular in Japan than elsewhere (most of the titles are Japanese-exclusive), but not very popular anywhere. And that's sad. 44:50: I wonder if these constant interruptions to flow are part of why the series never achieved the success its charm should have earned. 2:35: I think I'll call the kid Tsu. That's not her canon name, in English or Japanese, but consider this: Kero. 6:50: It's a lovely little detail, it helps remind you of the robot's scale (small), and the cord was probably impressive procedural animation tech back in the day. 21:45: He probably doesn't want it back after it spent a couple days under the couch. Ew. 29:00: Yes, that's what we call it when night ends. 36:25, 58:40: It's like the anxiety you get when your phone almost runs out of charge while running errands, if you were your phone. 49:20: Isn't it weird that the Sandersons' robot has its features limited by what it does, but in a way completely outside their control? Chibi Robo (the device) is a weird product to sell. 1:05: It doesn't matter, but the entry second from the bottom looks like a playtime. 3:10, 5:40, etc: Cracks me up that Carrie is un-translating the ribbets. 4:00: This is just like that time Dad engraved his name on "Mom's" bowling ball. 8:10: I wonder how the family feels about Tsu's present...basically giving itself a tutorial. Like, couldn't the robot have read its own instruction manual ahead of time? 13:25: And it can fly! 18:25: I didn't know Chibi Robo worked on Toy Story rules. 21:10: I wonder who? Must've been the dog. 34:00: Why does this house have a Chibirobo-patterned, Chibirobo-sized door in it? 37:50: I wonder what the Sandersons think about their new robot breaking stuff and building ladders in the living room and making more robots to assist it in its tasks. I hope Chibi isn't becoming a paperclip optimizer for cleanliness. 38:25: Clearly, it's a cursed plastic frog ring, corrupting little Tsu with its froggy influence. 40:10: And it also does that thing where it makes nine copies of itself every ninth night. 47:50: Anyways, why is Chibi restricted to 10-30 minutes outside per hour? It's not power, Chibi can recharge itself pretty easily anywhere. 54:54: So you can't drop the trash in from above, but you _can_ throw it up from below. Game mechanics! 57:33: Not all plants are power plants. 1:02:20: That opaque visor certainly isn't helping matters. I don't think I mentioned, but Chibi communicating entirely through Wile E. signs stored in its head is a cute detail.
I love this throwback to this specific era, that special GameCube/PS2 weirdness a la Katamari Damacy, Pikmin, Harvest Moon: It's a Wonderful Life... the vibes remind me a lot of Ojamajo Doremi as well, which I highly recommend to anyone looking for some chill, fun magical girl slice of life. Much like Chibi Robo, I had vague half-memories of renting Magical DoReMi (the English dub of the first half of the first season of Ojamajo Doremi) from Blockbuster when I was like 5. I found the show again in college and fell in love.
Would LOVE to see a full playthrough, but I know from other playthroughs I've watched that this is a long one! This game is one I never got to play but really wanted to when it came out. I always love watching how people respond to this game 'cause it's so unique, the characters are so weird, and the power mechanic is interesting to manage. Thanks for playing it even if it's just for a lil bit!
!!! MY CHILDHOOD !!! I remember watching my mum play this game to de-stress and keep us kids entertained at the same time. She loved watering the flowers!
So here's some interesting facts about this game, or rather about the studio: Skip Ltd didn't make a very wide variety of games and unfortunately didn't have much commercial success, but the games they did release have some of the most interesting premise. Two of their games that stand out besides Chibi-Robo are Captain Rainbow and GiFTPiA. And, funny enough, Tao the dog appeared in all three games. Both Captain Rainbow and GiFTPiA played very similarly to Animal Crossing in that they put the player on an island where they can fish, catch bugs, and help the other residents of the island. In Captain Rainbow, the island's residents were all either other Skip Ltd characters (Such as Tao) or minor Nintendo characters (Such as Birdo and Crazy Tracy). The goal of Captain Rainbow is to help the islanders enough to store up these crystals that would eventually become a wishing star, which would then grant the player the option of fulfilling Captain Rainbow's wish and ending the game, or granting the wish of an island resident and continue making everyone happy. In GiFTPiA, your character gets hit with a massive debt and put under several bizarre restrictions such as a curfew where ghosts would chase after you if you stay out too late, having their face pixelated, and a literal ball and chain. The goal of the game was to help islanders and make money to pay off your debt and slowly undo the restrictions on your character. Both of these games seemed like they did well as far as ratings, so my best guess is the studio just didn't have enough marketing or hype to sell well, so they never saw releases outside of Japan. Then to finish it all off, the last game Skip Ltd came out with was Chib-Robo Zip Lash on the 3DS back in 2015, and since that game also failed commercially and we haven't heard anything from the studio since then, it's largely believed the studio has gone under sadly. So if there's any indie studios out there that want to try grabbing that Chibi-Robo IP, it might be available for sale!
Oh man! My brother and I both played - and loved! - this game as kids. It's such a great fit for the channel! I'd love to see you do a full playthrough of it!
Chibi-Robo is one of my favorite GameCube games. It is one of the finest examples of wholesome and odd in video game history and it does not get the credit it deserves. I remember playing it at one of the demo spots at Target while my parents shopped and I was so glued to it that I needed to have it. It does hurt hearing Dan say, "I can't wait to see how they improved in the sequels." They didn't improve in the sequels. There may be more than I recall, but I got the one on DS where you clean up a park. It was decent, but it lost a lot of the charm being crammed into a DS. The most recent one was a 2D platformer. It wasn't bad enough that they threw away the gameplay that made it beloved, but they also gave the ultimatum of, "if this game doesn't sell well, we're done with the IP." My poor little robot boy, lost to time, relegated to nothing but a Smash Bros cameo.
TV Tropes mentions some games that were only released in Japanese, if that makes you feel better. Not a lot of detail, of course, but they sound closer to the original.

Oh man, I *adored* this game when it came out! I always held out hope for an improbable sequel, but sadly the sales were never there to back it up. ;_;
The attempts at other games in the series include a direct sequel that was never localized, a DS game that seems to be forgettable, and a really bad 3DS platformer.
For those who want to know more about the music of this game, I highly recommend the RUclips Channel 8Bit music theory’s video on the game, great breakdown of how everything fits together
What a lovely yet frustrating game! It feels so close to greatness but the endless systems to keep track of are unfortunately just frustrating, not to mention the never-ending dialogue. Like spinning plates. Drop, say, the power concern and streamline the dialogue and it definitely feels like it could have been something really special.
I love Chibi-Robo! Sadly, most of the other games in the series weren't that good. And two Chibi-Robo-likes never made it out of Japan (Giftpia, Captain Rainbow).
I think he's intended to be more like 90's tokusatsu* heroes than 80's robot heroes. _*Power Rangers, but with less localization, and also being an entire genre_

I played and enjoyed the game (around 2006?, was a US import copy as I'm in a PAL region), but I think the game's unstructured world design doesn't help it's pacing.
The game's plot does follow a kinda strict flow chart, but some times you will just run into a part where you don't know where the next plot point _is_, and you can spend in game days and days in that state. (for example, missing the TV's cutscene trigger either by choice or mistake, knowing when you can get to a certain plot point upstairs, etc)
Also some of the game's interactions or solutions can be a little hard to guess unless you know the answer (ie, how the timers work, what a mug may be for, etc)

I know it can seem a bit grindy, but it really doesn't have to be. Chibi Robo has enough charm, pathos and story to be a full series.
This is one of my all time fave games!
Oh man, I *adored* this game when it came out! I always held out hope for an improbable sequel, but sadly the sales were never there to back it up. ;_;
The attempts at other games in the series include a direct sequel that was never localized, a DS game that seems to be forgettable, and a really bad 3DS platformer.
And there was a 3DS eShop exclusive game called "Chibi-Robo! Photo Finder". Quaint game which pales in comparison to this original game.
I remember this game. Played it on the Gamecube. Blast from the past! /Old man voice
For those who want to know more about the music of this game, I highly recommend the RUclips Channel 8Bit music theory’s video on the game, great breakdown of how everything fits together
wait how old is Dan if he was married already when this game came out?
They're high school sweethearts and he's an 80s kid, so safe to assume they married at 19 to early 20s.
Mid to late 30s, possibly early 40s if I had to hazard a guess
The first Extra Credits episode was 11 years ago, and I believe that was a college project.
So he's in his thirties at a minimum.
Dan and Carrie are both in their late 30s.
:le gasp: CHIBI ROBO!!!!
I loved this game when I was a wee lass, I played it multiple times. good times.
I think I might be the only one here who's never heard of chibi robo, but it did remind me of Roly poly Ollie and George shrinks
I understand if you don’t have the time, but I would love a playthrough of this
CHIBI-ROBO MY BELOVED WHAT A GOOFY GAME I LOVE IT SO MUCH
What a lovely yet frustrating game! It feels so close to greatness but the endless systems to keep track of are unfortunately just frustrating, not to mention the never-ending dialogue. Like spinning plates. Drop, say, the power concern and streamline the dialogue and it definitely feels like it could have been something really special.
Please, please follow up on this and make a series!
With how charming this game is, it’s too bad the Chibi-Robo IP has been kind of mistreated since.
I’ve always wanted to play this, but it’s so expensive
MOAR!
More please!
Hey, wait a second, this isn't a series!
But the froooooooog
Part of me wants them to release a short that's _just_ them watering the frog.
I love Chibi-Robo! Sadly, most of the other games in the series weren't that good. And two Chibi-Robo-likes never made it out of Japan (Giftpia, Captain Rainbow).
does the math….what!? nice
Why does Carrie say "cado" when Jenny says "ribbit"?
Ok I know you said this was a one off but… What if… Became a series…
I say finish the game!
💙
Carrie's high voice is a little bit too jarring for sensitive ears. I mean, i get it, its chibi, still...
Is it just me or does space ranger drake greyquest look like a bad 80s robot hero 😂
I think he's intended to be more like 90's tokusatsu* heroes than 80's robot heroes.
_*Power Rangers, but with less localization, and also being an entire genre_
hello!
