Devin Hester’s rookie season single handedly changed how we perceive return men for the rest of the leagues history. Teams were forced to kick the ball away from a rookie lol
Best returner in history, no doubt. People never thought they’d be scared of a return man lol. Need to make a meme that makes you pick between Derrick Henry and prime devin Hester 😂
Not talked about enough, but at that time the NFL was talking about rules changes to help return teams because kick returns had fallen off after Donte Hall was done. In fact, Hall was one of the only guys making returns. Then we got Hester and Josh Cribbs. Also, we had that life threatening and career ending injury to the Bills player and the NFL has turned 180 degrees and has been trying to take kick returns out of the game by increasing the starting spot of a touch back to the 25 and making the kickoff shorter by moving it from the 30 to the 35 to increase the chances of a no contact touch back. At some point the NFL needs to get rid of the kickoff altogether and replace it with a choice to give the ball to the other team at the 25 or to go for it (instead of an inside kick) with maybe a 4th and 15 from their 30 or 35 yard line.
@@Chuck_EL He’s in the Bears Hall of Fame but in my opinion he got snubbed by the Pro Football Hall of Fame committee. I hate this idea of players who spent most of their career on special teams not being given fair consideration for the HOF. If you’re the best player ever at a certain position, you deserve to be enshrined into Canton. It’s why Ray Guy is in the HOF, it’s why Adam Vinatieri will also get his gold jacket someday as well. Devin Hester and that Bears defense pretty much carried them all the way to the Super Bowl in 2006. It wasn’t just taking a kickoff or punt return all the way for a touchdown, it was also consistently setting the offense up in great field position. That won so many games for them. For those who think special teams isn’t all that important, consider this: in 2010, the San Diego Chargers had the top ranked offense and top ranked defense in the league. They went 9-7 and missed the playoffs. Why? Because their special teams was the worst in the NFL. Just imagine how far that team could’ve gone if they had a Devin Hester as a return specialist.
That class had Leonard, Leighton vander-esch and the criminally underrated roquan smith all in the same class it’s ridiculous what a good middle linebacker class that was

Still, it didn't have that tidbit about his birth and early years, so thank you for sharing this. *The story of how he got his nickname is pretty funny
Thank you for putting respect on Darius Leonard’s rookie season. He literally did everything that year, rack up tackles, get sacks, force fumbles and get INTs. Crazy enough he didn’t make the Pro Bowl but was 1st team all pro. Feel like he’s still slept on by a lot of people when he’s in the conversation for best ILB.

I'm a 56 year old life long bears fan and we may of lacked a superbowl quarterback (rex Grossman) but Devin Hestet took away that embarrassment getting our assses handed to us in what was only the second superbowl for one of the NFLs first teams. But one huge mistake you made was forgetting to include "Biscuit " Refrigerator Perry as a guy that should of been a "rookie of the year " in 85. Come on how many rookies score a touchdown in the superbowl WHEN THE DUDE IS A DEFENSIVE LINEMAN?!?!!!! Lol
Devin Hester was so electrifying to watch. He made kickoffs and punts, which are normally trivial and mundane, fun to watch. His open field running and vision were unparalleled. I loved watching him play and still go back to watch his highlights and I am not even a Bears fan! He was a once in a generation talent and I do not think we will ever witness someone surpass what he did his rookie year!
You could have mentioned who the two '65 rookie all pros were. And maybe that they turned out to be two of the best players ever at their positions and both were first ballot hall of famers.

Dick "Night Train" Lane was also undrafted. As a rookie in 1952, Lane had 14 interceptions, a mark that remains an NFL record 70 years later. Back then, the regular season was 12 games long, and it now is 17 games long.
Just some guys that deserve mentioning: Terrell Suggs 12 sacks, 9 TFLs, 5 FF, 4 FR, 1 INT on a top 5 defense. Marcus Peters League leading 8 INTs, 280 INT return yards, 2 pick sixes, and 26 pass deflections. If we’re talking about Mark Carrier, we should talk about Connor McGovern-it’s so confusing. They’re both guards and one plays for the Jets and the other plays for the Cowboys. They’re both starters too
About the two Mark Carriers... When the Ravens drafted C.J. Mosley in the first round a few seasons back, I was quite surprised to find that there already had been a C. J. Mosley in the league... a DT for the Lions at the time. And we also have two Lamar Jacksons...
