    • @PaulGaither
      @PaulGaither 3 года назад +4

      Not talked about enough, but at that time the NFL was talking about rules changes to help return teams because kick returns had fallen off after Donte Hall was done. In fact, Hall was one of the only guys making returns. Then we got Hester and Josh Cribbs.
      Also, we had that life threatening and career ending injury to the Bills player and the NFL has turned 180 degrees and has been trying to take kick returns out of the game by increasing the starting spot of a touch back to the 25 and making the kickoff shorter by moving it from the 30 to the 35 to increase the chances of a no contact touch back.
      At some point the NFL needs to get rid of the kickoff altogether and replace it with a choice to give the ball to the other team at the 25 or to go for it (instead of an inside kick) with maybe a 4th and 15 from their 30 or 35 yard line.

      @@Chuck_EL He’s in the Bears Hall of Fame but in my opinion he got snubbed by the Pro Football Hall of Fame committee. I hate this idea of players who spent most of their career on special teams not being given fair consideration for the HOF. If you’re the best player ever at a certain position, you deserve to be enshrined into Canton. It’s why Ray Guy is in the HOF, it’s why Adam Vinatieri will also get his gold jacket someday as well. Devin Hester and that Bears defense pretty much carried them all the way to the Super Bowl in 2006. It wasn’t just taking a kickoff or punt return all the way for a touchdown, it was also consistently setting the offense up in great field position. That won so many games for them.
      For those who think special teams isn’t all that important, consider this: in 2010, the San Diego Chargers had the top ranked offense and top ranked defense in the league. They went 9-7 and missed the playoffs. Why? Because their special teams was the worst in the NFL. Just imagine how far that team could’ve gone if they had a Devin Hester as a return specialist.

    • @verbfrombonsai8852
      @verbfrombonsai8852 3 года назад

      True. That's why tackles for loss, sacks, forced fumbles, and fumble recoveries usually carry DPOY's even if they had less tackles.
      However, tackles are more valuable for DL's and LB's because it generally means they stop the offence within their respective areas of the field (around the line of scrimmage or the 5 yard line) which is kind of a good thing because you limit the offensive gains. Having high tackles as front 7 is normal, but having low tackles means you are dog shit.

    I'm so glad you included my uncle Tommy Nobis in the video. I think he deserves the best LB spot because 294 tackles in utterly absurd

    In a similer fashion, when Adrian Peterson was a running back for the Vikings, there was a Adrian Peterson who was a backup running back for the Bears.
    Not as profilic the 2 Mark Carriers since as far as I know the OTHER AP from Chicago didn't really amount to anything, my fantasy league drafted him on the computer a could of times when trying to draft the more known Peterson.
    Also in one of our live drafts we had to use the Chicago AP sticker in place of the real AP because it got misplaced.

    The Freak is why you valued guys like Terrell Suggs for their ability to consistently knock out the football. Getting a sack wasn't enough, it was all about the ball. Jevon didn't have the longevity but when he burst onto the scene he was the x factor for that team.

    I want to mention Zach Thomas and Brian Cushing as well. Brian Cushing had a great impact as a rookie LLB and Zach absolutely gobbled up the stats. I was trying to think back as you did the video, who would be an underrated rookie season defensively? Brian Cushings statistics that year are pretty flashy as a non texans fan.
    Devin Hester didnt make his mark defensively, but you can argue he had as much impact on the current nfl landscape as a lawrence taylor in regards to his special teams play. You just flat out didn't kick to devin hester if you wanted a job in this league and he was the player ST coordinators lost sleep over. Now, the game has de-incentivised the kick return dramatically due to health reasons, but I also believe part of that was due to the league seeing an up trend of players taking out risky returns otherwise they wouldn't have because they felt they could have that level of impact in a game and be the difference between their team and a super bowl just like Anytime. But you simply could not, that man was a beast and I bow to his greatness as a fan of the game. There's a legitimate possibility we never see what he did his rookie year ever again.
