Thanks so much for this. I set up my FX6 a few days ago in my turtle tank then thought I would add not one, but three air stones two days later.
It was only after that I started to hear a strange noise coming from the canister. It was so irritating and not like the smooth hum that I came to get familiar - (my 50 gal tank with sandy my 8 year old Mississippi Map is a centre piece in my living room). I dismantled the filter, but found nothing.
This morning I came to my tried and proven RUclips to see if anyone had the same problem. And here you are giving valuable advise about the air stones to those of us who didn’t read the manual thoroughly because the FX6 is so simple to set up.
After watching this video I scurry to turn off both the air stones and the FX6 and after a few minutes restarted only the FX6 and waited. My quiet hum is back!! And still is after more than one hour. My air stones are still off and I won’t be turning them back on until I have relocated the air stone near the input - oh what a bother!
Thanks so much for putting in the time for this. You save folks like me tons of money because I knew if I called up a pet store they probably would advise me that a part isn’t working, lol.
Hi John and Lisa. I got a fx 6 today got it up and running and I can't believe how quiet and the power of this thing is amazing.massive shout out to fluval for inventing this beauty.I would advise anyone to get one ASAP.:-).
Thank you...Excellent demonstration on how to set up FX6 with media, hoses and explanation of filter location. I learned more watching your video than Fluval's demonstration.
I really want to see you installing the hoses in close and the cutting of the hoses
yeah i definetly want to get one of these now!!!! how can people dislike this video??? cleary you have gone to a lot of effort to show how awesome this piece of equipment is? i understand fluval sent you one so you could show it off...but as u said it was and honest review keep it up john!
Keep the video's going, cant wait to see how it is running in a couple of weeks. Being a newbie I am learning allot. Thanks
Oh absolutely!!! To be honest I'm kinda relieved that we're not spinning it. Its a huge risk. Instead Lisa and I decided we'll just start saving for a brand new 240. Might take a while but we'll get it.
Very true, that's one of those things after I finished the video I said "Aw man I forgot to mention that". Thanks for pointing that out!!
Has it changed between the FX5 and the FX6? Looking at my FX5's I was getting ready downstairs the other day the intake went to the outside loop in the bottom so the water would then go up through the outside of the trays and then go down through the trays so that the third and final stage is the center of the bottom tray. It then goes out through the output. That way all of your mechanical is before your biological. And you'd place the filter pads with the finest in the bottom of the first tray
@neosmith80 It's actually correct, he just said it wrong. The water comes in and goes straight down through the intake tube to the bottom of the canister first, then it travels up the outside portion of the baskets (through the white sponges), until finally it travels down through the middle of the baskets hitting the mechanical, biological and chemical before going back up through the other (exit) tube and back to your tank.
Hi, just checking to see if you still have that fX6 running? I know it's an older version then then one I purchased. I only heard good things about this unit. Love your videos
That's awesome!! I'm glad it worked out for you!!!
The carbon pad should go along with the carbon bag - bottom tray. The other pads remain at the top. The water flows from top to bottom. Mechanical, then biological, then chemical. Also, since its a pressurized canister filter, gravity isnt the primary force that feeds the filter - pressure is.
kgtropicals, thanks for the laugh.. I couldn't bring myself to cut the hose without double checking how you did it.. only to watch you cut it to short.. sorry I found that so funny.. Thanks for your video's. I am a fan.
Just pick up a new fx6. Where is the best place to put your in take & out take in your tank? All in one corner or one at each end of the tank in the corner,
Why not a sump instead? It's easier to maintain, you can change the pump when you like. You can also add UV steri, heaters, or other things without changing the look of the main tank.
Excellent walk through. I'll be getting my own FX6 very, very soon for sure.
I bought my fx6 canister used . On your video with your new fx6 you forgot about the timer on the lid as to when you serviced the filter ' I'm calling it to your attention because I have no manual . I don't know what questions to ask about the timer buttons on the lids ?
When is the next video? I am enjoying them I just got a 75 gallon for me to scape the paint off the back put new on, and excited to start my own project. I have been very inspired. Keep the videos coming I look forward to them all the time.
Thanks!! Now I just gotta clear this tank up from the sand and I'll be good to go!!
Great video my FX6 arrives tomorrow. Currently using two Tetratec ex1200s and had a nitemare with one leaking, watched your eagerness in the arrival of your fx6 and how easy it is to put together so decided to get this filter. Can't wait.
My only negative comment is I keep frontosa blue zaire moba wilds, please separate the malawi and the tanganyikan frontosa, not because they are gen different lake but frontosa like calmer water conditions and a higher ph, Malawi love fast flowing water and a ph of around 8.2, you won't get the best out of either fish keeping them together ;)
Thanks for the great video
Looks like a bad ass piece of equipment
I setup this wrong for a while and I sold many little things around and I said what is wrong until I see this video mentioning about the sponges at the top thank you thank you 😊
You mention something about it needs to be 8" below the water line. My stand is only 21" tall for my 110 extra high tank. I know the filter will not fit under my stand but if I were to build a matching cabinet next to my tank would the gravity siphon still work correctly?
I have found it is best to have the outflow connected to the shortest snake, it offers less resistance by efflux, and thereby better flow. water supply helped a lot with natural law.
I am gonna run this filter on my saltwater tank for bio only, turn over rate in my salt tank should be huge as it is host to some nice corals I wanna keep it that way and add alot more corals in one shot too so it will have to handle the bio load well. Mine should get get here tomorrow then the fun starts!
Keep us posted on how well that FX6 works! Great video as usual.
My fx6 came with red basket inserts not show in this video, do we have to use those?
I have one of these. Could someone please tell me where I put the black oring that comes with it? It's pictured on the table next to filter during this video. I thought it was a replacement one for lid but it is smaller than that one.
Yes, as long as the top of the canister is 8" bellow the water line. That's according to the manufacturer.
Hey it happens I just was wondering if it was somehow dif on the 6 vs the 5. I am putting all the mechanical and chem in the first and then having two layers of bio. I know that a lot of people have different preferences for how they like it.
Power consumption in watts?? Can you demo the shutoff valves? Love ur vids! Be well!
I just bought a FX6 for my new 125 gallon tank. Yup almost $400 lol. But I have a question about the stand. Now the tank come with the standard stands I was just wondering if it can hold some heavy rock? Plz reply ASAP. Ty love your videos and all your fish.
great thing about the hose is theres very little reduction in flow due to angles of the intake outake hoses
I use one on my 75gal and love it.
What are the major differences between Fluval filters and Eheim filters, in your opinion, that make a Fluval superior? I own neither, but have a 180 gallon project I'm dreaming about for the future.
I really should have watched this prior to installing mine yesterday 😂
Great vid. I have the FX5 and it works awesome. The 6 looks very much the same
What a beast of a filter
Just ordered this one after watching this Review, Thanks alot sir!
I dont know if this has been asked already and sorry if it has how often do you need to clean it? I'm upgrading to a 220 and I think this is the route I'm going to take. $300.00 doesn't scare me because the two HOB's I run on my 75 gal cost me that lol
I' m very new to keeping aquariums is a fx6 to big for a 40 gallon breeder tank?
Hey I know this may be off topic but it was in the video. =) Anyway.. Did you build the stand/table for the tank you used the canister in? If yes, what kind of wood did you use and did you use any flat wood for the tables top(the part under the tanks bottom) or just more boards?
I wanted this filter so bad, upon setting up the filter when I attempted to prime my canister the O Ring on the behind the impeller housing was kinked when installed at factory and the O ring leaked and would not pump well. Hopefully I get this up and running this weekend. Fluval makes great Hang on back filters but hopefully they make this right and supply the new o ring at no charge.
Great videos very informative keep up the good work, I appreciate the time you put in. Just starting out with African Cichlids gathering great information from you.
Just awesome. What else can be said. Can't wait to see the rest.
Should I use this monster filter in my 55 cichlids tank
You should do the sand, rocks and background at the same time as you turn the tank and hook it up at the back! ;) Dope video!!
great video john.that filters a beast! dont rush things for us we like watching all of this.i know it was late in the day for ya.cant wait to see how it works out down the road.remember john...measure twice, cut once (just kidding).
Where doea that rubber ring seal on ur table go??? Mine came off but dont know where it came from
The one thing I really don't get about Fluval FX filters is the T handles. I got an FX5 for my 225 gallon tank when I first set it up in 2009, and the handles were such a pain in the ass to deal with that I eventually just removed them, and when I got my FX6 a couple years ago, I discarded the handles as soon as I set it up. I just don't see how anyone finds them useful. They get in the way, and I've always had difficulty getting them to stay in place while I put the media baskets back into the canister.
Yeah I actually did make a mistake in the video. The book DOES say to put the fine "polishing pad" in the bottom tray. so the top would have the 2 coarse sponges and the bottom tray would have the fine sponge. I realized I made the mistake after I made the video and said to myself "Well I can't do the video again, its already installed" lol.
John great job jeep up the awesome work!!
John did you change your video format because my youtube on my phone wont let me play your newest video
john- I just bought a used 40 gallon fish tank with a canister filter for my African cichlids. The thing is that this setup was being used in a salt water setup. It had a massive amount of salt build up on it. After cleaning it with bleach and soap water it looks great. Is it safe to use it for my"fresh water" fish? Is there any danger or perhaps benefit to having any salt in the filter or hoses?
your line should be good once u move it to the back of aquarium its actually a shorter run. u should have about the witdh of the aquarium more hose.
Would I need an external filter pump on a 50 gallon or could I get away with an internal pump?
Great video John, really interesting to see this new filter. Looks amazing and thanks for showing us. I read that the back of the tank is scratched also. Its a shame like you say , but will save you a lot of extra work now not to spin it round. I know the scratches are irritating but we cant see them on your videos unless you go right up close to them. Looking forward to your next video !!!! :)
I bought this filter last night for my Telapia tank.
"You can't put it together wrong"
Challenge Accepted
Lol read my mind. I was thinking there gotta be a way to fux this up. And im going to find it.
In my other canisters the mechanical filtration was on the bottom. So for this one it's on the top?
Yolanda Herbert yes I did the same mistake
Do you still have this filter? Still running? Long term impressions?
Awesome video!!!!! New sub right here
So if I had two air stones and two sponge filters running where would I put them if the intake and the output are at the back corners of the tank? Any help would be appreciated
Would this filter be too powerful for a 240 litre tank of cichlids? There is an FX4 filter now would that be more suitable?
im getting one soon and i was just wondering do i need to fill it my self or does it do it for me
Like you said the filling and priming of the filter is the hardest part, I loved the video but I wish you would have shown that part too. Im still nervous about that step.
whats up kt trop just one f 6 on the 240 gallon?
Oh and where did you get that tall stone in your tank?
I am planning to buy this for my 201 us gallon tank what you suggest should I go for this? Just wanted to know you experience with this external filter.
Just in case anyone missed one of the 25 times you said this was east, it's easy!
What assortment of africans do you have in there?
Good video. I just bought one of these --- Thanks!
Do you think this filter will be fine in a 55g african cichlid tank?
Great video, John.
I'm guessing my comment didn't post. Shouldn't the filter pad before the ceramic media? After running trickle filters for years and always had pads before the bio media to keep the muck from clogging it.
Just ordered one today.Replacing a 406 Fluval and 110 AquaClear on my 125 Gallon African Tank.Too Many fish!!
Hoping this does a better job.
How loud is the FX 6????
Yeah the finer pad goes before the bio media, I figured that out after doing the video and couldn't do the video over again lol. I planned on clearing that up in a future video.
yet again another great video!
I found fry in the bottom of mine last time I cleaned it out lol
Did you forget to put a sponge on the bottom under the Carbon?
I see everybody doing it!!!
😎☝🏻
Hello, Really nice aquarium and great Filtration! i'd would like to know about the support of it (i meant the table) who is it build?
just installed my new fluval fx6. but pump is not running continuously. it works for 3 mins and then rest for next 15 minutes happening from last few hours
I love fluval products. The best on the market imo
What size canister filter would you recommend on a 55 gal tank?
I just got the Eheim G160 for mine. never looked back. best of luck
Thanks
Nice video. Great tips! I will make sure to learn from your mistake 😂👍🏽 You don’t have to sell us though 🤣 It comes out naturally when you’re a salesman 👨💼 Thanks again and I will be looking forward to new videos
Is this too strong for a discus tank?
My only complaint with mine is I needed more hose
I thought it should be, mechanical-biological?
My filters go with sponges then carbon then ceramic.
Is it as effective?
Great video, thanks
Nice explanation
I have this on my 55g it is the best I also run a Marineland 360C I use the FX6 pure mechanical and the ML360 with intake filters and the rest is purigen and carbon
Nice tank good info
How's that?
You must have nitrate city with that setup. So hope you have an auto drip line
Just set my fx6 up its making a drone noise is this normal as its annoying or is there anything i can do to reduce this noise. The filter is inside my wooden stand.
Not really sure, mine is silent. You might want to look into what the filter is sitting on. Sitting on a lose board or a thin board might cause some noise but the filter should be silent.
Ok thanks will move it out the stand and onto the floor later see if that makes a differance.
My Fluval fx6 is blowing air bubbles if I point outlets upwards towards the top of the water and if there not totally under the water, the intake does not pull anything large, fish waste, you are saying it is silent my one I can hear it when I watch tv so at the moment I am not very happy with this filter at all. It may be just me, I tried everything I know but still have no luck, or is this all normal.
It's crazy to me how these guys take the time to put these videos together, instruct and not even understand how their own filter operates
Those hose clips are mean!! Some of them don't keep that radius and you can get kinks. They are bio noodles. And lets see how long it takes when you have to set everything up at the back!!lol
