When I had discus fish in a 110 gallons aquarium (2014-2018), I used the Fluval FX5. Great big reliable filter with great flow, and simple to clean and maintain.
Excelente video, muy bien echo y detallado, esos filtros son una maravilla, yo tengo un fX6, compraré uno más, para agregarlo como lo muestras en tu acuario. Saludos kaity desde México 🇲🇽.
I had 2 these on my 150 gallon tank. Kept the water crystal clear. Moving and cleaning these behemoths is no fun. I sold that tank and down sized to 90 gallon. Have 1 eheim classic 600 on the 90 and water is spotless . Eheim is way quieter. Very happy with my setup. Fully recommend a 90 gallon tank. Great review. Gave you thumbs up. Nice to see a lady in hobby.
Thank you so much Brett :) That's great to know you are having success with the Eheims. I've found the FX6's to be quite loud. I'd like to try a Eheim on my next setup
@@Kaityscichlids What’s loud though? The canister vibration or the motor? Water flowing through the canister & hoses is seemingly without noise. We have 7 Fluvals running & none make any noise. Long hoses, short hoses, etc. it’s possibly your cabinet set-up touching the floor/wall awkwardly.
@@markb8954 it was the motor I believe, apparently it's a bit of an issue with just some of the FX6's but not all of them. When I was reading up on it some people said they got theirs replaced and it was no where near as loud
Hey, Kaity! I heard you loud and clear about disconnecting those fitting. I have a sicce that used to give me a fit. About a year ago, I started putting Aquatop's silicone based lubricant on the shafts. Made a world of difference and is 100% aquarium safe. Makes disconnecting sooo much easier

great video .,. when you clean the motor and take it off before you install it put some dielectric grease on the motor shaft all around. that's what I do with my fx6 and work great.
Real great step by step on the filter maintenance process. A tip for the cloudy water when restarting the filter after cleaning, is actually taking both of the inlet and outlet hose off and spraying them out with a water hose outside (or shower in your case maybe) A bit more work but the results are well worth it. Take care!
But……you lose your syphon effect. There’s really not that much water in the intake valve. The output valve already has tank water. So you are talking about a very small volume of water.
@Mark B yeah you could just clean out the outflow line so you don't lose the pressure in the intake and it'll take care of all the debris when starting it back up
Hi Katy very informative video. I have a FX6 and a FX4 on my 450ltr tank and I swear by them. They keep my water crystal clear and they have excellent pumping ability. My only difference to yours is that in my bottom tray I have filter floss which takes all the minute particles out and polishes the water. I'm slowly working through your back catalogue of videos and I'm enjoying every one. Stay safe and take care. John
Excellent video Kaity. I have the same duel FX6 set up. I just cleaned one yesterday. They can be finicky. I had issues. I cleaned it out and when I put it back in for some reason it would not start. I usually fill it 1/2 way and it will fill up on its own when you open the valves. It didn’t. So I took the lid off and filled it almost to the top. It still would not start. I took it apart again and cleaned the impeller which wasn’t even that dirty. I hooked it back up and it worked like a charm! Over all I love the filter it is a beast but hard to service for sure. Fortunately they don’t have to be serviced that often. Especially when you use 2 of them.
Thank you so much Brian! Mine are exactly the same. I had the same issue where it wouldn't start and I had to empty it and clean the impeller out. I think it was due to having sand in the impeller maybe, so a good thing it wouldn't start but still annoying. That's why it's nerve wracking cleaning it, because I never know which way it'll ago 🤣 But all in all a good filter!
Hello from the USA. Funny how you tube connects the world. it’s good for our hobby ! Good thing they don’t need service to often. As far as flow goes they are one of the best on the market.
Hi Katiy Good work generally african Cichlids make Lots of droppings due to its rapid metabolism and two Fluvals is quite good like your tank its awesome Watching you from IRAQ
How is the flow rate on the 75 is it too much? I was thinking of putting one on my 75 but wasn't sure.also how's the noise.cheers thanks for any you can give
The flow rate is great and the noise level is just a low hum. Actually, there's more noise from my air compressor than the FX6. It's been over a year now and very happy with my filter choice. Cleaned it once about 3 months in and it was not even slightly dirty. Now I just change out the white polish pad and wash out the blue medium pad every three months. The main filter I leave alone, probably make it about a year, I'm running 26 Mabuna Cichlids and feeding once a day. The big plus with this filter is the drain feature for water changes. Lots of info on that here on RUclips.@@mediscusnut7994
Beautiful Cichlids. I'm surprised overflows, sumps and automatic filter rolls haven't caught on in the freshwater hobby. Much easier access and maintenance, more filtration flexibility, better nutrient control and a place nice to hide all the gear.
Great video as always! 👍 Been running my 6ft with 2 FX6 and an FX4. Recently changed the two fx6s with an Eheim 1500xl, which I was looking for almost a year to find. OMG what a difference!!!! First of all I was able to fit bio media of both fx6s in the Eheim plus a bit more!!! FX6 is good but not even close to the Eheim. Is just on another level!! If you can get your hands on one, I would strongly recommend giving it a try.
Eheim is bit too expensive for what it is.. Give a try to Oase filter, quite like Eheim but more innovative with practical advantages: heater inside, pre-filter tower incredibly easy to clean without touching the rest of the filter.. in Europa lot of fish keeper and aquascaper switch to this brand..
Your 2 FX6 are perfect. Just don't treat those foam pads/sponges as "mechanical media", tests have shown that they do an even better job at biological filtration than ceramic media, if one doesn't overclean them.
great video. I sold my fx6 because i had a lot of problems with it. I still love them but i have hang on the back now and that is much better and cheaper..
Kaity you have really impressed me your filter setup is so similar to mine and your thought process to limit the vibration resinating in the cabinets is the same as well. Your display tank is looking great so the maintenance schedule you have works perfectly. If I could give you one tip that you may already do or that might help you make the small tap at the bottom stay free from sand as a small amount came out when you emptied the filter, when you take the filter to the bath to rinse out, open the bottom tap to let clean water through and flush out any remaining sand from this area, the tap does create a potential problem for use in sandy substrate setups that Ben O’Chard from Ben O’Cichlid had that eventually the sand destroyed the O’ring and scored the tap shaft too, for this reason I’ve always drained the filter from the top with a small diameter hose.. your tank is stunning keep up the great work 👏👏👏👍
Nice looking tank Kaity!...I could never go back to canister filters though..I have a 40g sump for my 240g tank and love the ease of use. You have a a nice deep substrate which is awesome but what you should have done is utilized an undergravel filter with filter plates. The only thing you need to put under the plates are high quality bio media like biohome ultimate. After 8-12 weeks that media will become anoxic because it seems very little water flow and will start reducing your nitrates. That in turn will keep your water clean and cut down on need for water changes. By the way, activated carbon is charcoal. They are the same thing.
Thank you! That's actually a great idea, I am moving soon so I'll have to redo the tank so it's definitely something I'll consider. I would love to try a sump one day
I think I have found my new favorite channel. Thank you so much Kaity for a very accurate review/demo on the FX6. Ive been a Eheim canister filter lover for years but really considering making the crossover to the FX6.
The pump is down in the filter. There are the sounds from. Got the same and also a couple other brands that have the pump on the top.. The fx6 is a easy start-up evert time. but can make some sounds of snails ore other things banging against the pump.
i was recently given a fluval fx5 but noticed the motor is fx6. it worked fantastic on the tank the prior owner had. it sits in my basement with an eheim professional 2 filter that i was also given. i have a 105 gallon empty bow front tank i found free on marketplace and i left tbe stand that cane with it outside over winter and it got destroyed but it already had damage that i wasn't sure if i should or shouldn't repair. too late now. i look forward to setting my African cichlid tank up and see how these filters work. you video has me itching to get it all going. you have a beautiful set-up!
@@Kaityscichlids yes it is. What chichids I choose is my favorite part. Zebras for sure. Some clown loaches as well. I would like to replace all the ones I had that died when we moved from Ontario to Nova Scotia. I lost every fish in that move all full grown and two breedingpairs. Tried to get new ones in N.S but the cost for babies was over 600 bucks. I kept a few "on sale" snow white zebras but eventually sold the set up. This time around I'll get fish much cheaper as I'm back in Ontario. I am confused!! I really like the planted tank look and I've always liked the pigeon blood discus. But Africans are stunning when you have full grown and multiple species. I love your set up.. variation is the key. At least I think it is. My big problem is finding a new stand/cabinet. The bow front makes it tricky.
@@cdnreplies3597 what a nightmare losing all of your fish, that would have been terrible! I love discus/planted setups too, but I decided on African Cichlids because I find them just as beautiful (when full grown/with variation like you said) but a lot less maintenance
Hey how are you, nice and very informative video , I am also planning to make a 5ft cichlid tank and your channel is helping me alot just keep going doing great job love from INDIA 🇮🇳
Very sorry......I had to laugh when you were talking about water all over the floor very quickly. I think most people that own aquariums for long time have this happen sooner or later. I had (2) Fluval FX6 canisters on my previous 150 gallon for over 10-years.......they work great and filter very well and never had a failure. My problem after 10-years of use the maintenance of them......just to much work and gets tiring after owning them for a while. That is why with my WB 100.3 I am going to a sump filtration to make things much easier.......I'm not young any longer! 🙂 Thanks for the awesome content, love your channel.
Yes I think water all over the floor is just a part of the hobby 😂 I would really like to try a sump one day to see what it's like. I find them a bit intimidating but I can definitely see how they'd make maintenance easier. Thank you 😄
If you are open to a few helpful hint I’d be happy to share. 1 your drain hose should remain attached and wrap it around the filter, the end should be pressed into those to clips on top the lid with the stopper on the end of the hose. 2 Just remove all the sponge filters and drop them in a bucket to clean in the sink. 3 Use a tot not a bucket with tank water, leave all your media in the plastic holder and just dip the entire plastic holder into the tot water and shake it a little to clean it off, no more media in your drain. 4 use your inlet hose to fill the filter back up before putting the lid on, it’s already primed with water and has an on off switch no need to put your mouth on a hose. And all the dirty water is fantastic for watering plants.
Also where are your red sticks that goes on each side of you filter trays? They make it so you can pull all 3 trays out at one time without making to much of a mess.
@@CFish-N-Cars A few postings ago she noted she took those off since thought they might have been rattling & making noise. I doubt they were the culprit, but thats why.
Great video beautiful Tank one tip I was always told was to wash your mechanical & Biological filtration in tank water, because tap water has chlorine and other chemicals that take the good bacteria of cycled tank out of your Tank.
this was a very good video 👌Hi Kaity ! a tip from me regarding the pump to the filter. Around the rotor, dirt and mucus often form, which causes the filter to lose capacity because the rotor in the pump begins to slip, the filter lose capacity, the flow decreases. It should be cleaned at least 1-2 times every six months in my opinion.
I have two FX-6 filter canister one on the 125 gallon tank and the other is on the 470 gallon aquarium pond. I did a video on cleaning the FX-6 canister. You're missing the two red clips to keep the trays together.
Nice, you are strong enough to do these things 👏💪😅 I think that for African cichlid the most important is the mechanical filtration because its excrement is a lot. As for beneficial bacteria, they live in rocks and sand. 🤓🧐 and good luck kaity 😍😙
Still have 2 of those FX6 for my 12 red bellys and the only time I clean them is when they start to make some noise, for me it´s when the fine filters (I have them in the two bottom trays) starts to get clogged, and that´s the cue for me to clean them. But i only replace the fine filters and rinse the rough filter with tapwater.. the rest I rinse with the water from the aquarium. And I´m one of those vikings so I just turn the valves of and carry the thing to the sink and emty it there 😏 Had the same issue as you with the impeller noise, I just put some fine filer wool between the plastic house to stop the vibrations.. worked for me. And there is a big o-ring on the top lid that has to be replaced after some time of use, and don´t tighten all screws to hard (top lid and impeller house) , can´t say this is quality it´s all plastic like every other brand. Love your videos!
Hey Kaity! Thats not easy to film with one hand and do the rest with the other. Appreciate all the hard work you put in. You should seek someone's help in your family next time 🙂
Cool video. I would recommend a pre-filter sponge it keeps my fx6 running very clean. If your biomedia gets mucky it can hinder the beneficial bacteria. I'd also recommend replacing the sponges with high quality medium and fine density ones for maximum efficiency! Subscribed.
Katie, i have those filters too.....pain in the butt to get the hoses off sometimes for sure.....other than that it's my fav filter.....fluval HOB aquaclears are great too easier to manage but doesn't have a streamlined look like the canisters do so.....Happy fish keeping my dear :)
Could you maybe get some large plastic containers outside in the garden and fill with tap water a few days before filter cleaning day. And yes still use pond water for bio media.
The only problem would be the temperature difference of the water. I could always fill up a tub with water from the tank though instead of using the water from the filter
Really love your tank. I also have a cichlid tank but 75 gallon. I also have Fluval FX4 and two Marineland HOB 375. Tank stay super clean and not much maintenance. Fx4 and Fx6 are really good. Maybe when I can afford a 125 gallon I will buy a Fluval FX6
Another trick to quiet down the FX6 is to wrap foam around the hoses were they come in contact w/ the stand, as that will resonate through the cabinet, and to cover those openings in the back as much as possible w/ more foam.
That buzzing sound comes from sand trapped in the impeller chamber ;-) sometimes this can even stop the pump completely, as there is safety mechanism to stop the pump to avoid damage.
Nice set up and running two FX6’s will keep the tank really clean, I will suggest that you use pre filter sponges on the inlets cause they will pull in the sand substrate and tear up the impeller assemblies over time. I say that cause I tore up an FX4 that way, other than that you put on a great demo on cleaning and media set up.
@@Kaityscichlids Yes, that's the downside of having a sabdbed...you could move the sand directly under the intake and move it to the sides so that there's less chance of it getting picked up..you don't want that sand ever getting into the impeller..that will kill the pump eventually.
To stop most of that gunk getting into your biomedia and clogging it up you can use graded sponges: course, medium, and fine, then under those a layer of floss. You would still get some gunk permiate through but much less.
@@Kaityscichlids You may find you don't need to clean out the entire filter as often, just the sponges at the top and replace the floss with the schedule you have now.
I really like how you explained the process, I have a African Tank, Mbuna/Peacock. I'm 2 months into setting up my tank. Numbers are fine I had a fish die today I think he was bullied, should I separate my Mbuna from Peacocks?
I think it depends on how much aggression you are getting. I have never had any issues with my peacocks towards my Mbuna and vice versa. I normally find my peacocks are the most aggressive to each other
Hi thanks for sharing your video, did you know that you don't need to fill your filter before you put the lid back on as your inlet pipe is acting as a syphon because the pipe in the tank is still under water, simply put the lid on securely refit the in and out valves open the in then the out wait for all the bubbles to stop at your outlet and it will be full and ready to turn on. Also try putting a little food grade silicon grease on the rubber seals on the lid connector pipes it will make the taps easier to remove finally you can put a bucket under the out valve n open it to get fresh tank water to wash your sponges 🙂
Very nice tank !!! New sub ! I started with one small 40 gallon tank and now goes out of control with multiple tanks . I got 5 125 gallons tanks . R u planning to get more tanks ?
It's definitely a bit of work, but not too often! I like canister filters because they can't overflow and the tank doesn't need to be drilled. I just find them simpler I guess. But I'm not opposed to sumps
@@Kaityscichlids I'm building an aquarium now, it is 225*70*70 cm with a sump from 150*50*50cm. Both tanks are used, I made holes in both tanks for the plumming, it is so easy to do. With an overflow an emergency overflow and enough capacity in the tank to catch the volume of the pump chamber from the sump the risk of a disaster is smaller than zero. It is also very easy to do a water change or make it fully automatic with a drip system. By the way, I like your video's, so you've got another fan. 😉
If you get rid of that black pad up top and use the blue pad followed by some ‘filter floss’ underneath it’ll keep your bio media cleaner and polish your water too. Black pad looked clean compared to everything else indicating it’s not doing much if anything at all. In Aus you can buy polyester fill at spotlight very cheap. Look for 100% polyester which shows there’s no other chemicals to prevent bacteria, mould etc. Also aqua one premium nood is one of the best bio media in aus (for a good price) the porosity of it is insane. *Place a dry piece of bio media in a puddle of water/food colouring to see how good it wicks up the water to test how porous it is.
Thank you for the tips!! I totally agree about the black pad, I was thinking the same. I swapped in a new blue one last night since they seem to be doing a good job
i will give you one tip about take valve out and spill water everywhere... first try drain 300-500ml in some small plastic box and after this pull valve out and will have no spill.. i still try learn how to do same with second valve because from there always come some water... :D
When I clean media I take a pail about 5g of clean tank water by syponing some water out with a spare piece of half inch tubing. With my dirty water I just empty it out in my toilet then flush it away usually it flushes down by itself. Living in a smaller space you become creative as time goes on. I rinse my media in the kitchen sink using a plastic pitcher to catch and pour the water to clean out the media out of the collected tank water and clean as I go. Then as the media is cleaned I'm putting them back in order into the filter to complete the set up. This will allows you to use clean tank water instead of the dirty filter water to clean your media and keeps your BB alive in the media. I wash my sponge filters with tap water to clean them out they become loaded and dirty with poop and with some tank water I just soak or pour some tank water over my sponges to get rid of any chlorine and allow some BB to get back in the sponges. In your case two or more pails would be needed because you have two fliters and your doing a WC anyways. Btw I use Ehime filters but one of my filters is a Fluval 306 canister works great love the basket design they use. Nice video and it will help others with the use of their filter and cleaning them. 😎👍
@@Kaityscichlids You very much welcome! I noticed when you poured the waste water in your nice bath tube it would be easier to send it down the toilet making less mess and not to clogg up your drain. I agree on lubricating the O rings prior to re-attaching. Once you are ready to attach the hoses, wet them all down again and they will slide right on. Conversely. When removing, a gentle but firm circular up method works well, don’t just try to yank back n forth and up. Adding just a bit of some food grade lubricant goes a long way to keeping O rings & fittings fitting smoothly - www.amazon.com/dp/B08QFQ8LFR/ref=sspa_dk_detail_1?psc=1&pd_rd_i=B08QFQ8LFR&pd_rd_w=nSrUf&content-id=amzn1.sym.eb7c1ac5-7c51-4df5-ba34-ca810f1f119a&pf_rd_p=eb7c1ac5-7c51-4df5-ba34-ca810f1f119a&pf_rd_r=A2FW9MZ2FFCA84XDACFE&pd_rd_wg=ETpbR&pd_rd_r=174214fb-9b48-47ef-8344-e70de459c7e7&s=industrial&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9kZXRhaWw&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUFHRU5RMk0xSkg1VVAmZW5jcnlwdGVkSWQ9QTA4MzU4MzE5TFNXNERIMEdIOTYmZW5jcnlwdGVkQWRJZD1BMDgxNTczNFZXVDJINDdIRk43RSZ3aWRnZXROYW1lPXNwX2RldGFpbCZhY3Rpb249Y2xpY2tSZWRpcmVjdCZkb05vdExvZ0NsaWNrPXRydWU=

Thank you for all your nice comments Dany!! These are Fluval FX6 canister filters but you could use any type of canister filter, or a sump filter. And yes, these are Malawi cichlids 😊
You need to do a better job with filter maintenance. It shouldn't be that nasty. Looks like the last time you cleaned it was 4 months ago at the time of making this video. I recommend checking once every two months if not once a month. Other than that very good video. Very detailed and easy to follow. Keep it up.
I would much rather have a sump instead of big canister filters because they are a big pain to clean. But sumps take up a lot of space that most people don’t have. But beautiful cichlid tank.
Hi, Im very knew to this hobby and Im internetting flat out, but can i ask, is there a time frame you have to keeping the canister open, will it do damage ? PS: love ur aquarium.
9:48 If you don’t mind the looks, having a pre-filter sponge on the filter intake will significantly reduce the gunk accumulated inside the filter itself, reducing the frequency with which you need to clean the whole filter. When you do your weekly water change, give the pre-filter sponge a few squeezes and siphon out the dirty water.
Kaity, I hope I don’t sound weird when I ask this but in one of changing waters videos, you showed a sink by the washer/dryer - why not use that instead of your personal tub? It would seem more sanitary and that utility sink would be proper place or outside. I guess you just want show off your muscles lifting that fx6 😂 they are quite heavy when there’s water in it 🤙🏽
Ok , I know I have a million questions but you are definitely helping me every single time ;) , I have 1 fx4 on my 75 gallon and I want to add on a second one because I will be adding more fish in the future with over stocking . But when I add on the second filter .. just hook it up and run it? Do you think that it will effect the fish since I currently have a existing one running that hasn’t been cleaned in a few months?
That's the way to do it! If you hook it up and get it running it'll need some time to build up a bacteria colony, but it won't affect the fish negatively in any way while it does that
Hi kaity I saw your video and purchase a new fluval fx4 but is it normal that the impeller will have some low humming noise when it’s running perfectly ?I love the power of it but only down side is not as dead silence as my other canister
Mine have also always been a bit noisy! I've had to use foam mats to help with the humming noise. Also sometimes taking off the impellor and cleaning it sometimes helps a bit

Thank you so much :) Eastern Australia is great. I've actually never been to Western Australia myself!
Great video! Thinking of removing my sump on the saltwater tank and using 2 FX6 - I'm using just one now.
Thank you!! 😊 That'll be interesting to see how it goes, you don't see many saltwater tanks with canister filters
Thanks for sharing your set up Kaity 🙂👍
I run FX6's also...I sent FX6 "fish poop" in your cannister reducing tips🤮 on Instagram
Thank you!!
Great video! It's always helpful to see how others service their filters. Thanks for making it!
Thank you 😊 and thank you for watching!
Hi Katiy
Good work
generally african Cichlids make Lots of droppings due to its rapid metabolism and two Fluvals is quite good
like your tank its awesome
Watching you from IRAQ
Thank you so much! 😊
Fantastic video! You’re literally becoming one of my favorite aquarium keeping channels. Keep up the great work!
That is so kind of you to say!! Thank you so much :)
Great video Kaity. Just installed an FX6 on my 75-gallon Mbuma tank so it's nice to see what I'm looking at come cleaning time.
Thank you!
Thank you so much 😊 Yes I'm not too sure why! I've never owned a sump
Great video as always! 👍
Been running my 6ft with 2 FX6 and an FX4.
Omg that's amazing!! I will have to check them out, I've never seen the Eheims before. Thank you for sharing 😊
Thank you! I really like hang on the back filters too, especially on smaller tanks
Kaity you have really impressed me your filter setup is so similar to mine and your thought process to limit the vibration resinating in the cabinets is the same as well. Your display tank is looking great so the maintenance schedule you have works perfectly. If I could give you one tip that you may already do or that might help you make the small tap at the bottom stay free from sand as a small amount came out when you emptied the filter, when you take the filter to the bath to rinse out, open the bottom tap to let clean water through and flush out any remaining sand from this area, the tap does create a potential problem for use in sandy substrate setups that Ben O’Chard from Ben O’Cichlid had that eventually the sand destroyed the O’ring and scored the tap shaft too, for this reason I’ve always drained the filter from the top with a small diameter hose.. your tank is stunning keep up the great work 👏👏👏👍
Thank you so much!! And thank you for the tip 😊
Beautiful video and super informative and helpful! ❤
Thank you!! I'm glad you found it helpful :D
Thank you!! That's so nice of you to say, I appreciate it so much 😊
The pump is down in the filter.
Thank you so much!! The anticipation of setting up a new tank is the best feeling
That's so great to hear!! Thank you so much :)
I connected both of my fx6's to each other. Essentially one acts as a giant prefilter and I haven't had to clean the second filter for 18 months now.
What a great idea!
Wow, i havent seen any one else discuss this option.
Would this work using an fx6 with an fx 4 ?
Very sorry......I had to laugh when you were talking about water all over the floor very quickly. I think most people that own aquariums for long time have this happen sooner or later.
I had (2) Fluval FX6 canisters on my previous 150 gallon for over 10-years.......they work great and filter very well and never had a failure.
My problem after 10-years of use the maintenance of them......just to much work and gets tiring after owning them for a while.
That is why with my WB 100.3 I am going to a sump filtration to make things much easier.......I'm not young any longer! 🙂
Thanks for the awesome content, love your channel.
Yes I think water all over the floor is just a part of the hobby 😂 I would really like to try a sump one day to see what it's like. I find them a bit intimidating but I can definitely see how they'd make maintenance easier. Thank you 😄
I love the product super dope❤❤❤⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Very good video thanks for all the knowledge on that style canister filter!!!
Thank you!! 😄
This is soooo helpful! I can't believe I didn't think of some of these things 🤣 Thank you heaps Byron
Amazing attention to details. I think fx6 baskets does not have handle and not easy to remove
Thank you 😊
Stunning tank, great video
Thank you so much Blake! I love your channel :)
You are a legend if you put oring grease on the out and in its easily comes of and on from hardware store.
I'm definitely going to be doing that!! Thank you :)
Great video beautiful Tank one tip I was always told was to wash your mechanical & Biological filtration in tank water, because tap water has chlorine and other chemicals that take the good bacteria of cycled tank out of your Tank.
Thank you so much :) That's the way to go!
this was a very good video 👌Hi Kaity ! a tip from me regarding the pump to the filter. Around the rotor, dirt and mucus often form, which causes the filter to lose capacity because the rotor in the pump begins to slip, the filter lose capacity, the flow decreases. It should be cleaned at least 1-2 times every six months in my opinion.
Thank you for the tip!!
I have two FX-6 filter canister one on the 125 gallon tank and the other is on the 470 gallon aquarium pond. I did a video on cleaning the FX-6 canister. You're missing the two red clips to keep the trays together.
That's awesome! I'll have to check it out. Yep, I took the red clips off, I took them out to see if it helps minimise vibration
Awesome channel and awesome video. Your set up looks so clean
Thank you so much 😊
Nice, you are strong enough to do these things 👏💪😅
I think that for African cichlid the most important is the mechanical filtration because its excrement is a lot. As for beneficial bacteria, they live in rocks and sand. 🤓🧐
and good luck kaity 😍😙
This is true!! There would be a lot on the holey rock that I have
🤩🤩Worth watching 👍👍👌👌. This vedio will be helpful to me and I am planning to get a 5 feet aquarium for African cichlids

😍 love this youtuber, very inspiring
Thank you so much!!
And I´m one of those vikings so I just turn the valves of and carry the thing to the sink and emty it there 😏
Had the same issue as you with the impeller noise, I just put some fine filer wool between the plastic house to stop the vibrations.. worked for me.
You should seek someone's help in your family next time 🙂
I do my best!! Thank you heaps, I appreciate it 😊
Cool video. I would recommend a pre-filter sponge it keeps my fx6 running very clean. If your biomedia gets mucky it can hinder the beneficial bacteria. I'd also recommend replacing the sponges with high quality medium and fine density ones for maximum efficiency! Subscribed.
Thank you!! I have been meaning to get a pre filter, they seem like a great idea. Thank you for the sub 🤗
Katie, i have those filters too.....pain in the butt to get the hoses off sometimes for sure.....other than that it's my fav filter.....fluval HOB aquaclears are great too easier to manage but doesn't have a streamlined look like the canisters do so.....Happy fish keeping my dear :)
I'm glad it's not just me!!
Well made video and useful information
Thank you so much ☺️
The tank looks soooo clear, and beautiful !!!
I got 3 FX6 on my 200 gls and don't look the clear...
Thank you!! I think the low iron glass helps it look clear, as well as having the wave maker to help with the water flow
Eindelijk duidelijkheid ❤👌👌
wow really great filters and they look very complicated to handle, they are quite expensive I'm sure😃
These ones are pretty pricey! Around $700AUD. You can get much cheaper ones though that aren't as big/strong
@@Kaityscichlids one costs 700AUD or two?🤣 even one was too expensive
@@nelson466 Each!
@@Kaityscichlids but you don’t have any screw drivers? 🤷♂️. Always good to have a basic tool kit around so you can tighten clamps,
Could you maybe get some large plastic containers outside in the garden and fill with tap water a few days before filter cleaning day.
Thank you! Yes I'm really happy with the FX6's, they are expensive but they do the job
Another trick to quiet down the FX6 is to wrap foam around the hoses were they come in contact w/ the stand, as that will resonate through the cabinet, and to cover those openings in the back as much as possible w/ more foam.
That's a great idea!! Thank you 🙌
Great video. Greetings from Turkey
Thank you so much!
Thanks for sharing....👍
Thank you!!
Thank you 😊
I love your setup! 👍
Thank you!!
That buzzing sound comes from sand trapped in the impeller chamber ;-) sometimes this can even stop the pump completely, as there is safety mechanism to stop the pump to avoid damage.
Ahh thank you! Yes it has stopped before and I had to take the pump off, so that would explain it
@@Kaityscichlids your welcome ;-)
Nice set up and running two FX6’s will keep the tank really clean, I will suggest that you use pre filter sponges on the inlets cause they will pull in the sand substrate and tear up the impeller assemblies over time. I say that cause I tore up an FX4 that way, other than that you put on a great demo on cleaning and media set up.
Thank you! That's a great idea, I didn't think to do that. I get a lot of sand in the filters
@@Kaityscichlids Yes, that's the downside of having a sabdbed...you could move the sand directly under the intake and move it to the sides so that there's less chance of it getting picked up..you don't want that sand ever getting into the impeller..that will kill the pump eventually.
Open the bottom valve before trying to un hook the hoses so there's not sucktion keeping them on and you end up spilling less.
Love your videos. Looking to set up a big peacock tank. What tank is that?
Saludos desde Colombia! 🇨🇴
Awesome nice tank
To stop most of that gunk getting into your biomedia and clogging it up you can use graded sponges: course, medium, and fine, then under those a layer of floss. You would still get some gunk permiate through but much less.
Thank you Steve! That's a great idea
@@Kaityscichlids You may find you don't need to clean out the entire filter as often, just the sponges at the top and replace the floss with the schedule you have now.
Very nice video
I really like how you explained the process, I have a African Tank, Mbuna/Peacock. I'm 2 months into setting up my tank. Numbers are fine I had a fish die today I think he was bullied, should I separate my Mbuna from Peacocks?
I think it depends on how much aggression you are getting. I have never had any issues with my peacocks towards my Mbuna and vice versa. I normally find my peacocks are the most aggressive to each other
thank u !!! very nice video
good point 16:49
i want to buy one !
Thank you so much :) Haha yes!! I initially got a bit too excited and overstocked my filter and I had to take a lot of media out of it
Great Video
Thank you!!
Thank you so much for the tips!!
beautiful tank!!
Thank you 😊
Very nice tank !!! New sub ! I started with one small 40 gallon tank and now goes out of control with multiple tanks . I got 5 125 gallons tanks . R u planning to get more tanks ?
Thank you so much!! 😊
What a hell of a job! Why not a sump? It is much more easy to maintain and with much more space for filtermedia.
Шикарный аквариум!!! Молодец.
Thank you for the tip!!
Wow!! These are great tips! Thank you so much 🙌 I'm really questioning how I didn't think of these things 🤣
@@Kaityscichlids
You very much welcome!
I noticed when you poured the waste water in your nice bath tube it would be easier to send it down the toilet making less mess and not to clogg up your drain. I never kept africans before but they are beutiful fish I mostly keep SA fish just love the Amazon biotopes.
Keep up the good work!

You should check out Pondguru's video on the FX6, he sets it up a bit differently, but also gives a more realistic idea on what size aquarium it is suited for. But good video!

I agree on lubricating the O rings prior to re-attaching. Once you are ready to attach the hoses, wet them all down again and they will slide right on. Conversely. When removing, a gentle but firm circular up method works well, don’t just try to yank back n forth and up. Adding just a bit of some food grade lubricant goes a long way to keeping O rings & fittings fitting smoothly - www.amazon.com/dp/B08QFQ8LFR/ref=sspa_dk_detail_1?psc=1&pd_rd_i=B08QFQ8LFR&pd_rd_w=nSrUf&content-id=amzn1.sym.eb7c1ac5-7c51-4df5-ba34-ca810f1f119a&pf_rd_p=eb7c1ac5-7c51-4df5-ba34-ca810f1f119a&pf_rd_r=A2FW9MZ2FFCA84XDACFE&pd_rd_wg=ETpbR&pd_rd_r=174214fb-9b48-47ef-8344-e70de459c7e7&s=industrial&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9kZXRhaWw&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUFHRU5RMk0xSkg1VVAmZW5jcnlwdGVkSWQ9QTA4MzU4MzE5TFNXNERIMEdIOTYmZW5jcnlwdGVkQWRJZD1BMDgxNTczNFZXVDJINDdIRk43RSZ3aWRnZXROYW1lPXNwX2RldGFpbCZhY3Rpb249Y2xpY2tSZWRpcmVjdCZkb05vdExvZ0NsaWNrPXRydWU=

Great video! Filter cleaning is always so satisfying lol. I might have missed it in the video but how often do you clean each filter?
Thank you! I don't have a strict regime for cleaning them, but normally it'll be between 3-6 months that I'll have to give them a clean
great video!!!
i want to start a new tank , are 2 filters like these needed ?
Are these Malawi Cichlids?
Thanks
Thank you for all your nice comments Dany!! These are Fluval FX6 canister filters but you could use any type of canister filter, or a sump filter. And yes, these are Malawi cichlids 😊
You need to do a better job with filter maintenance. It shouldn't be that nasty. Looks like the last time you cleaned it was 4 months ago at the time of making this video. I recommend checking once every two months if not once a month. Other than that very good video. Very detailed and easy to follow. Keep it up.
Thank you so much 😊 And agreed! It's always been an area I've fallen short
I would much rather have a sump instead of big canister filters because they are a big pain to clean. But sumps take up a lot of space that most people don’t have. But beautiful cichlid tank.
Thank you so much 😊
The fx6 is a beast of a filter, I use the 307 on my eco-system aquarium Pack's a punch but not as good as the fx
They definitely are!
Hello friend i know you i saw your post on instagram m there as meow cichlid nice to meet you again and I subscribe your Channel 👍😊
That's awesome! Thank you so much 😊
Hi, Im very knew to this hobby and Im internetting flat out, but can i ask, is there a time frame you have to keeping the canister open, will it do damage ? PS: love ur aquarium.
9:48 If you don’t mind the looks, having a pre-filter sponge on the filter intake will significantly reduce the gunk accumulated inside the filter itself, reducing the frequency with which you need to clean the whole filter. When you do your weekly water change, give the pre-filter sponge a few squeezes and siphon out the dirty water.
Çok bereket versin inşallah güzel olmuş
I thought you were in the cabinets on your thumbnail 😂 I’m like what is she doing now
😂😂😂 maybe I'll do that next time
Kaity, I hope I don’t sound weird when I ask this but in one of changing waters videos, you showed a sink by the washer/dryer - why not use that instead of your personal tub?
If you hook it up and get it running it'll need some time to build up a bacteria colony, but it won't affect the fish negatively in any way while it does that
@@Kaityscichlids that’s what I was thinking too. Ok thank you
nice vid and cool to see a girl doing fishkeeping vids

Hi kaity I saw your video and purchase a new fluval fx4 but is it normal that the impeller will have some low humming noise when it’s running perfectly ?I love the power of it but only down side is not as dead silence as my other canister
Mine have also always been a bit noisy! I've had to use foam mats to help with the humming noise. Also sometimes taking off the impellor and cleaning it sometimes helps a bit
Hi quick question what is better sand or gravel for the bottom
I prefer sand because they like to dig in it and waste sits on top of it, whereas with gravel the waste sometimes gets trapped in it
