Actually that's a reference to the Levi's spin off manga where she meets Levi, Furlan and Isabel and she says: "I've watching all of you" that's why Levi says that as a way to say goodbye to her.
Yeah Hange was an idiot but in the end it was Eren's fault for not telling them what he knew. But that is on Isayama for changing the story at the last minute because no one can convince me that before 136 the story was going in the direction 139 ended, aint no way in hell!
It's worth noting that the animation quality, length, and complexity here makes it clear that the animation studio put this sequence on the same level as one of Levi's fights. That says a LOT about how awesome Hange is and how epic this moment is intended to be.
Side note, this comment says a lot about just how epic Levi is. Like something just being animated on the same level as his fights already means its an extremely epic moment.
Well, they saved the best for last. Wish the production schedule was more merciful to the animators for this level of quality in the earlier parts of Season 4.

Her death was sad, but dare I say satisfying? She finally got her reprieve after years of leading the scouting legion, a role suddenly thrust into her hands which she never quite felt at home with. A commander of the Scouting Legion, an ambassador between nations, and the leader of a group of misfits - but she was a scientist, first and formost. She was able to live her final moments both fulfilling her mission and facing down the creatures she had loved most. For all of Eren's talk about freedom, at that moment, Hange was the freest person in the world.

Hange's such an awesome character. Not super-powered like the Ackermans or the titans but still pretty damn strong, super-smart, one of the few characters with an active sense of humor, and now, IMHO, she has the coolest animated death in the series.

I'm sure she was a little scared, anyone would be knowing they are about to die. But when Levi says, "give your heart", I think she was running on pure adrenaline after that, she experienced a fearless death. She wasn't eaten or trampled, she felt pain for a few moments when she caught fire but as soon as her ODM gear exploded I'm sure her death was instant. Going out in an explosion, saving your friends lives, and the OST just sets it all over the top. MAPPA you nailed it.
One of the best death of the series. I feel that Hange has got enough of the complexity of the situation and is genuinely glad to take the exit now, in the very simple old scout way: killing some huge steamy titans for comrades. It almost feels like back to the old days. Crual and harsh and tragic, but simple.

The fact that the cape with the wings of freedom was burni g is also a great bit of symbolism : the simplicity of season one is over , now there are no good guys or bad guys , and there are no titans or humans , only pepole ... Also floch got axed badly
3:28 the way she falls down burning after such an hopeless battle, the way jean and connie look at her and everyone crying AND THAT HELL OF AN OST. This scene is literally perfect. The lyrics at this moment says "ich will nicht verlieren" what translated means "i don't want to lose", that just makes it way sadder. Man even though i got this spoilered, this was by far the best scene in this part and maybe one of the best moments in this whole series
I'm kinda sad that they didn't put the lyric that said "we'll let this hot wind take our feathers" (I don't remember if it translates exactly to that), but not disappointed in the slightest because they demonstrated it perfectly!!!
What hurts the most about the situation is they had practically zero time to properly grieve the loss of Hange immediately after. They hopelessly and helplessly watch her down blazing but had to move on to focus on their plan of attack. God I can’t imagine how deeply traumatizing this would be to experience. And Hange was the only one who got to rest.

Hearing bauklötze for this scene was unexpectedly perfect. A season 1 scout ost brought back to give a sense of nostalgic glamour that the scouts once represented. Absolute sacrifice, and the will to throw away one's entire self and heart to keep moving forward. Beautiful work.

I had already seen this scene in the Manga, but wow... seeing this scene in the Anime made me shed a tear, they really made this scene much more beautiful, epic and sad.

This entire sequence is awesome, but the last 30 seconds was just impeccable directing. A temporary tuning down of the music to represent the confusion and denial, followed with a powerful return of the vocals to represent the outburst of grief and sadness by the characters as they witness the death of a comrade. They did something similar with Sasha's death too. While WIT perfectly portrays the horrors of fighting Titans in its direction of death scenes, MAPPA perfectly encapsulates the grief and intense emotions of people who lose someone they care about.
What broke me was Levi's reaction in "So long Hange" and his "Devote your heart" you can feel the sadness in his tone witnessing all his friends die without doing anything to prevent it ;(

A lot of people didn't get the reference in this scene 😕 back when Keith Sadis told the scouts the reason he retired was because he wasn't special and Hanji lost respect for him because he was supposed to give his heart like the other soldiers he led to death. The reason Hanji sacrificed herself was to atone for her own sins because while she was in command, the military was in shambles, and many died. She noticed Keith had finally sacrificed himself. That's why she told Levi it was her turn. She really meant what she said and lived by her own sword 💔

She is one of the last professionals, one of the most experienced titan killer machine. And without unique genetics like Levi. All her strength comes from experience. When she saw that the plane is still not ready, you can feel the desperation. And the cut to the plane with the music was epic. They reached freedom, thanks to Hange.

I love how Levi says "watch us" when she dies. Since it was Hange who asked Levi if their comrades could see them from above. He knew they were always watching. Being that he didn't answer her question and she then found out first hand that they were indeed always watching. I felt he might have bitten his tongue in that moment, leaving it for her to find out herself, savoring the beautiful moment when she realized it was true.

Am I the only one who feels happy for Hange? They succeeded in not only buying enough time for their friends to get the flying boat in the air, and they managed to go out looking as cool as possible!
She looked relieved sacrificing herself. I'm sure when she became commander and seeing how so many things have gone wrong she must've been beyond stressed. Surprised her entire head isn't covered in white hair. At least she gets to relax now and meet her fallen comrades.

Attack on Titan author and animators really does have the best sequences and music choices when it comes to impactful moments in the manga. We’ve seen the titan transformation/slicing titans nape throughout the whole series but they still make these experiences fresh and lovable even this late into the anime. Just gotta respect their dedication towards it.
I think one the biggest things that really made this scene sad, was that fact that we didn’t see her smile like she usually does in so long, that we forgot she used to do it so often. THIS SHIT HURT MY FEELINGS 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 I MISS YOU SO MUCH… RIP A REAL ONE

I love the respect from Levi and Hange to each other. When she died and Levi said Hange, I felt that. Hange was an amazing character: funny, strong, smart, a bit freaky with the titans but that's the way she was and it was charming and lovely, at least for me. She sacrificed herself and fought until she got completely burnt A True Legend, Hange-san. It touched me like when it happened with Sasha. We won't forget you, girls!
Everything about this episode was EPIC! The story's going better than ever. The animations pretty good. And even after such a sad thing(Hange's death), they made us happy by showing us she joined Erwin and others an is now happy
I agree. After seeing her burning corpse fall. I was like okay I get it I didn't need to see that but when I saw the afterlife scene right after I was okay with that. This was truly a bittersweet scene. If the show hasn't already won some, it definitely should win some awards. This story is unlike any other I've seen and I watch a lot of great animes.

this hurts so fucking much, but Levi’s goodbye, “from give your heart” to “so long hanje, watch us” absolutely breaks me, this will go down as one of the greatest anime of all time, from the writing (obviously because of the manga) to the ost, to the voice attacking, to the visuals, breathtaking, beautiful, extremely powerful and on and on. I think that part that broke me the most was how Connie and Jean were trying to get a last glimpse of her . They were trying not to lose sight on her and she goes out like a champ. And as soon as they can’t see her they breakdown and so did I
I think that after seeing how well the characters we already know are good with the ODM gear, like Jean, Connie, and the Ackermans, its easy to forget that others were also highly skilled with it. Floch was incredibly skilled, and Erwin and Hange have been doing this longer than the main cast, and even still, I was blown away by her movements here since we normally didnt see her fight much prior.

When I saw this, i felt the tears swelling in my eyes. I started watching AoT when I was around 13 or 14 and Hange was always so funny. Now, I’m turning 20 and I’m watching Hange meet her end. It’s funny. After the truth about the outside world was revealed, I always thought the show was no longer about saving humanity from the Titans. This moment here proved me wrong. Because in the end, Hange gave her heart to save humanity. Goodbye, Hange. You gave your heart for humanity and we shall always treasure it.

From the Levi OVA to her final moment...Hange was hange. She never changed her beliefs or morals and held on to them and suffered through them. It just shows static characters can suffer and be just and be just as good as dynamic chatacters.
3:20 this makes my heart skip a beat, such timing with music and seeing Hange falling to the ground... I feel her whole squad watching her and all the events that have happened all this time, it's all coming together. This was intense.

I'm sure she was a little scared, anyone would be knowing they are about to die. But when Levi says, "give your heart", I think she was running on pure adrenaline after that, she experienced a fearless death. She wasn't eaten or trampled, she felt pain for a few moments when she caught fire but as soon as her ODM gear exploded I'm sure her death was instant. Going out in an explosion, saving your friends lives, and the OST just sets it all over the top. MAPPA you nailed it.

I feel that Hange has got enough of the complexity of the situation and is genuinely glad to take the exit now, in the very simple old scout way: killing some huge steamy titans for comrades.
It almost feels like back to the old days. Crual and harsh and tragic, but simple.
And with the old Ost it gives that nostalgia even more

The fact that the cape with the wings of freedom was burni g is also a great bit of symbolism : the simplicity of season one is over , now there are no good guys or bad guys , and there are no titans or humans , only pepole ...

3:28 the way she falls down burning after such an hopeless battle, the way jean and connie look at her and everyone crying AND THAT HELL OF AN OST. This scene is literally perfect. The lyrics at this moment says "ich will nicht verlieren" what translated means "i don't want to lose", that just makes it way sadder.
Man even though i got this spoilered, this was by far the best scene in this part and maybe one of the best moments in this whole series
I'm kinda sad that they didn't put the lyric that said "we'll let this hot wind take our feathers" (I don't remember if it translates exactly to that), but not disappointed in the slightest because they demonstrated it perfectly!!!

I loved this scene too but for me it doesn't quite beat Armin's sacrifice scene when he says "Eren will see the sea!".
What hurts the most about the situation is they had practically zero time to properly grieve the loss of Hange immediately after. They hopelessly and helplessly watch her down blazing but had to move on to focus on their plan of attack. God I can’t imagine how deeply traumatizing this would be to experience. And Hange was the only one who got to rest.
Hange and Levi's goodbye really gave me a feeling of deep loss. This scene was really well made.

Hearing bauklötze for this scene was unexpectedly perfect. A season 1 scout ost brought back to give a sense of nostalgic glamour that the scouts once represented. Absolute sacrifice, and the will to throw away one's entire self and heart to keep moving forward. Beautiful work.

I had already seen this scene in the Manga, but wow... seeing this scene in the Anime made me shed a tear, they really made this scene much more beautiful, epic and sad.

This entire sequence is awesome, but the last 30 seconds was just impeccable directing. A temporary tuning down of the music to represent the confusion and denial, followed with a powerful return of the vocals to represent the outburst of grief and sadness by the characters as they witness the death of a comrade. They did something similar with Sasha's death too.
While WIT perfectly portrays the horrors of fighting Titans in its direction of death scenes, MAPPA perfectly encapsulates the grief and intense emotions of people who lose someone they care about.

A lot of people didn't get the reference in this scene 😕 back when Keith Sadis told the scouts the reason he retired was because he wasn't special and Hanji lost respect for him because he was supposed to give his heart like the other soldiers he led to death. The reason Hanji sacrificed herself was to atone for her own sins because while she was in command, the military was in shambles, and many died. She noticed Keith had finally sacrificed himself. That's why she told Levi it was her turn. She really meant what she said and lived by her own sword 💔

She is one of the last professionals, one of the most experienced titan killer machine. And without unique genetics like Levi. All her strength comes from experience. When she saw that the plane is still not ready, you can feel the desperation. And the cut to the plane with the music was epic. They reached freedom, thanks to Hange.
Hell she's probably the best non-titan/ackerman Titan killer in that group.

I love how Levi says "watch us" when she dies. Since it was Hange who asked Levi if their comrades could see them from above. He knew they were always watching. Being that he didn't answer her question and she then found out first hand that they were indeed always watching. I felt he might have bitten his tongue in that moment, leaving it for her to find out herself, savoring the beautiful moment when she realized it was true.

It takes the bravest kind of person to stare death right in the face and still charge forward. Hange really had the most heroic death.

She looked relieved sacrificing herself. I'm sure when she became commander and seeing how so many things have gone wrong she must've been beyond stressed. Surprised her entire head isn't covered in white hair.
At least she gets to relax now and meet her fallen comrades.

Attack on Titan author and animators really does have the best sequences and music choices when it comes to impactful moments in the manga. We’ve seen the titan transformation/slicing titans nape throughout the whole series but they still make these experiences fresh and lovable even this late into the anime. Just gotta respect their dedication towards it.

I love the respect from Levi and Hange to each other. When she died and Levi said Hange, I felt that.
Hange was an amazing character: funny, strong, smart, a bit freaky with the titans but that's the way she was and it was charming and lovely, at least for me.

I agree. After seeing her burning corpse fall. I was like okay I get it I didn't need to see that but when I saw the afterlife scene right after I was okay with that. This was truly a bittersweet scene. If the show hasn't already won some, it definitely should win some awards. This story is unlike any other I've seen and I watch a lot of great animes.

Even if by some small chance she survived the explosion and the fall she was most likely crushed. Would have been nice if she did though would have gave a possibility that she survived.

I think that part that broke me the most was how Connie and Jean were trying to get a last glimpse of her . They were trying not to lose sight on her and she goes out like a champ. And as soon as they can’t see her they breakdown and so did I
Hange is probably my favorite character tbh. Couldn't have asked for a better send off.
I think that after seeing how well the characters we already know are good with the ODM gear, like Jean, Connie, and the Ackermans, its easy to forget that others were also highly skilled with it. Floch was incredibly skilled, and Erwin and Hange have been doing this longer than the main cast, and even still, I was blown away by her movements here since we normally didnt see her fight much prior.
Hange went out like a badass . And she did it while being fascinated by what she loved , titans ! 10/10

I started watching AoT when I was around 13 or 14 and Hange was always so funny. Now, I’m turning 20 and I’m watching Hange meet her end.
It’s funny. After the truth about the outside world was revealed, I always thought the show was no longer about saving humanity from the Titans. This moment here proved me wrong. Because in the end, Hange gave her heart to save humanity.
Goodbye, Hange. You gave your heart for humanity and we shall always treasure it.

Damn. I knew what was coming having read the manga and still felt choked up during this scene. The voice acting, the music. It got me.
Characters like Hange are extremely rare in anime. The devotion they show and how their character doesn't shift his beliefs until the very last moment it's remarkable.

From the Levi OVA to her final moment...Hange was hange. She never changed her beliefs or morals and held on to them and suffered through them. It just shows static characters can suffer and be just and be just as good as dynamic chatacters.
