Forging A Knife From Scissors

- Nunzio at Earthwalkers Boots sent me his spent shears and razor blades from their custom leather working to see what could be done. After testing the scissors' steel I decided to forge a canister damascus knife with them. Unfortunately, Earthwalker's custom boot business is going out of business but they still have stock they need to sell. Go check out their site! www.earthwalker....

Leather shears are drop-forged from high carbon, cutlery-grade steel. Safe to say it's good for knives and definitely not garbage.
Somebody buy this guy a beer for posting some actual facts and not being a gratuitous asshat! 👍👍
@@flashwow1666 how bout no.
@@azraeldelune2096 ok g
just for kicks ,i found F1150/C55 is a steel for scissors
Scissor steel is garbage. Trust me, I'm a random RUclips commentator.
This guy is legit, I have randomly commented before as well.
yeh but no but yeh, cos like he's gonna make the scissors out of a very top qualiteeeeeee expensive pionear knife. eh??
i know absolutely nothing about steel, but i was about the write the same comment, so, it must be real
Looks like the below 3 commenters are garbage, but "I" think the steel is excellent, if the scissors were excellent. BTW--you have made a beautiful and HARD edge excellent knife!
Still catching up on older videos. This turned out fantastic. The the handle "texture" matched the blade perfectly and loved that green color. All in all, another grand one! 👍
I like that the etched effect is different than most others looks cool.
If my friends asked me to forge something out of scissors I'd be cheeky about it and make a larger pair of scissors
Green Beetle and Shurap in the same day?
Didn't know things could be this good.

It's about 2 years since I've watched your videos and i decided to jump back into some soothing maker stuff and man I just gotta say you're still one of my favorites. Really glad to se you're still at it and sorry for straying away for so long!
Welcome back!
Wait what! Green you got a mill! Never disappoint on the knives
wait, you mean to say you DON"T have a mill?
fishy38t nah man I got one. Just that green has never had a mill to my knowledge
@@jhorn64 I think he means a milling machine.
You did a video a while back of making a knife from numerous cold steel knives, I was thinking it would be interesting to take numerous cheap damascus amazon knives, forge weld them together in a canister, then use that billet as a jacket around a 1095 core. I imagine it would be quite the insane pattern.
yes i agree i want to see this !
Looks like they still cost 30 bucks or so, if its something that the great beetle himself would be interested in, then I'd gladly donate to the cause!
The issue is, most of those Pakistani "damascus" knives are made from complete junk metals that are unhardenable. ruclips.net/video/UeeE9DyI52w/видео.html
@@coltonthorpe7812 OUTDOORS55 did a vid about those cheao damascus blades,he found them to be made of unhardenable stuff.
That's why I'm saying forge them into a jacket around a core of 1095. That way you have a hard cutting edge of good known steel and a jacket of softer steel on the outside. San mai style!
I love how I see a post on Instagram and immediately go to RUclips to see how it's been made this is so lovely to watch
I think you did one hell of a job . I loved the instructional and the handle is awesome . I'm an old timer and I'm impressed !!!!!!
I think that this knife looks great , mastership of art of knife smithing in the finest form
I am amazed the level of sharpness you achieved from scissors. You also learned from the adventure which is great too.
I ADORE a drop tip broad-width blade style. 5 stars on your craftmanship because of an excellent end result. Simply beautiful work and impressive design too. My subscription you have attained.
Ty, man!
I think using the scissor hole as part of a razor would be a banger idea! Totally totally cool!
This knife also turned out really cool! Even though the pattern didnt come out as funky as expected, the knowledge of how it was made TOTALLY makes it a sweet knife! (The scales used are beyond cool too!)
Beautiful knife! Thanks for sharing your process and thoughts along the way :) It's really encouraging for a new blacksmith to see the pros getting over hurdles too.
As always Steve .
Great job and video
Just in time for dinner. Ribs off the grill, bourbon and Green Bettle.
Scissor steel is NOT garbage. My wife was a stylist for years. Some of her scissors cost upwards of $1000 per pair. The very high end ones held their edge for a year of constant use before needing to be resharpened. It's very high quality, and holds an edge very well. I loved the video.
Nice job! I had no idea that scissor steel would harden like that. It would be great to get a piece tested to see what the alloy actually is.
I think the scissor handle razor blade sounds super cool, I would love to see a video like that!
oh my god beautiful! Amazing work. Thanks for sharing your craft!
Great looking knife, the handle material is really handsome. Anyone should be proud to carry this one.
I really dig the subtle pattern on the blade
Another great video and another amazing and beautiful blade thank you very much again
I like the pattern, and the finished knife, it's true that I don't know much about steel, but I do collect knives, so I've seen quite a few, so I know quality work when I see it.
I was a little surprised that the scissor steel turned out to be such a great edge. I really thought you were wasting your time there at first. NICE WORK!
You gotta think that professional leatherworkers are going to buy quality scissors. And a good blade is a good blade (at least at this kind of length).
+1
sir,
holy smokes its beautiful! i'm blown away! its perfect in every way!
from myself and earthwalkers: thank you so much!
with sincere gratitude,
nunzio
This is one of my favorite builds so far.
Such a useable and attractive knife!
nice choice on that green scale handle goes very well with the Damascus
I think you have done a superb job and produced a very nice blade well done
I always forget about your channel but that's okay because then I get to binge watch your videos
Yes razor or a karambit knife!!! great work. thanks for sharing
What a beautiful piece of art! I love the scales on the scales!
Looks super sharp and that handle is deadly. 👌
I typically lurk..You record all of it.. It's not always all happies.. sometimes it all elbow grease to try and salvage so much time. The time it takes to get a simple billet of known steel. This step can be a crapshoot. For many many trying forge welds with what they have.. you have shon good practices. You have a press but you have also worked with a hammer. I've got nothing but respect. I would be honored, humbled, and happy to hammer with you if we ever crossed paths. I think we run similar paths Sir. I tip my hat!
Ty sir are you around Tulsa?
handle is amazing
Great build!
green beetle videos got me feeling like life is normalizing
I love how you always talk like a novice but then showing the skills of a master-bladsmith. great work!
Since no one took the opportunity:
Scissorsteel is actually garbage.
Nice video love your stuff :-)
yeh but no but yeh, cos like he's gonna make the scissors out of a very top qualiteeeeeee expensive pionear knife. eh??
Now I discover your chanal
I love how you discuss your work with us
As a amateur I learn alot from you
Awesome, thank you!
this does look good the suddle contrast was nice
Cuts like a brand new pair of scissors! 👍
Somehow your videos stopped popping up into my feed, so now I have like ten to binge through. Hell yeah.
Yes make a razor with the scissor loop, I need me some of that scissor steel
Great handle choice to match the blade pattern. Nice video
I like the snake skin pattern on the handle ,nice knife, good work
I like the etching, and it's a real straight forge. Good craftsmanship, thanks for sharing
Love it. Entertaining & informative. Thanks Steve, you never fail to deliver.
I appreciate that!
@@GreenBeetle Not blowing smoke up your backside either. I'd not bother commenting if your videos were not quality, and they always are. Kudos.
This guy is an artist, people are awesome...
get this "like! here from brazil
The blade looks quite nice and that handle is just stunning. I absolutely love this knife.. Great job, sir!
The way I get around something like this is to forge weld a known steel to the edges. We all know that drop forged scissors are not (usually) high grade alloy or high carbon. But some (leather workers, or high end fabric cutters) sometimes are. So with cable, and “exotic” idea damascus it’s simply best to take that extra step to make sure the edge will be up to par. Peace.
Such a cool idea. Really like how this turned out, and that handle is sick
I love it!!!
Don’t mind me I’m just binge watching your channel 👍🏻🤣🤣
Gorgeous knife. Great work.
I love the razor idea...
Awesome informational educational video experience Y'alls God Bless Ya Prayers
God bless you too mate. 👍
The handle color is awesome
Wow ... beautiful knife!
I love the reticulated look of the blade, and your choice of scales reiterates the reticulation.
Quality industrial scissors are seriously hard, and hard-wearing. I would think it to be too brittle, but you seem to have conquered that. HRC 60 is pretty damn hard for a blade; I'd expect this blade to fail under heavy shock, but the size & shape suggest you're not going to be abusing it that way, so it should last effectively forever.
Frighteningly sharp edge you put on that!
Maybe the use of iron powder had an effect on the overall carbon content? Purely spitballing/asking
Looks great
Fantastic work!
Totally dig it! And I’m a custom knife maker myself. I’d say scissor steel is a good steel once the nickel is removed like you did. I don’t see a thing wrong with your build. Thanks for sharing it!
Thanks Steve, you never fail to deliver.
Very attractive and useful knife.
This whole Damascus process is so entertaining. I love watching smiths beat their heads against the wall. Beetle says, "Due to heat treating most the contrast has disappeared and that's disappointing."
Disappointing... He should be livid. The whole laborious prep was targeting contrast.
1. Damascus is different - not coolest.
2. Damascus isn't awesome - it's just different.
Continue having fun and I'll continue enjoying the comedy hours.
Gotta say, love that handle.

Those handle scales are SIC!
You should collect all of the steel dust from your belt sander and try to make some canister Damascus with that using it as the iron dust
What I think is you NAILED this build . Really nice job, all the way around. Video editing included. Scissor handle straight razor? Go for it with matching handle. Stay well and rock on !!!
Dude, all’s that matters is how YOU feel about what you create. Personally I’d have a knife made from scissor steel. There’s a reason that leather crafters use those types of shears. Ask your friend how many pieces of leather each pair went through before he sent them to you. I bet it was a lot of leather for each pair.
Glad you're starting to upload videos more often. Please please please put out more content.
+1 for the scissor loop razor handle
ScissoRazor sounds like a great idea! Go for it!
Looks awesome, scales suit it perfectly.
Nice work! I vote yes for forging a razor and keeping the finger loop
Nice work as always. I really appreciate that you take the time to explain what you are doing throughout the process. I enjoyed this.
Very nice build.
Wow,it's a nice and beautiful knife,sir,good job,👍🏻
A karambit would be an awesome project with those scissor loops.
Throughly enjoyed this one! Would love to see a razor made out of the scissors too
A few minutes before i was cutting my nails and thinking about what if someone tries to forge a knife from scissors, they remain sharp for a long time of use so they must be made of a good steel. Then I open RUclips and see your video.
Today I had a filet o fish for lunch. When I got home there was a video about the history of the filet o fish in my feed. I'm now thoroughly convinced Google is listening to us.
absolutely do the razor with the scissor handle, that would be awesome!!!
I like it. Great job brother.
Love the handle
Beautiful, it's not quite a Green Beetle, more like a Green Reptile 👍👍👍
True that!
very good job, left with a green dragon scale effect ... excellent material..👍👏👏👏😎
Never fails always get a 😃 to see your videos...
That is probably one of the nicest knives I’ve seen!! Good handle to blade ratio, nice shape on both handle and blade, cool pattern on blade and nice scales!
ty
Very cool look.
I like the nickel outlines!
Great job. Very nice work
Green, you are awesome!
You are!
Very motivating! Great knife! Keep on truckin man!
HE HAS RISEN !
Beautiful knife and the handle material is killer!! Great job!!
I can’t wait till the types of channels I watch come together and we get “forging Damascus pistons for this antique tank engine, will it run on lighter fluid”
They of course would have to be milled, now should that be abom or this old tony? (I know ave has a mill but we don’t have enough stock of the material)
The Damascus woulda have to made from defeated locks, we'd have to do metal cleanup with an etank....I have no clue how to fit concrete sculpture, fish tanks, and real estate in there.
Matt : Adulting I got the locks part, but the rest were lost on me, what about anthill sculptures?
that would be this old tony
Do it all in slow-mo too.
