    A great, level-headed discourse on lens selection, with much editing work to hold the viewer's attention, and with those quick and subtle injection of humor that surprises. Kim, your clips look straight forward, but I appreciate the time spent to conceive thoughtful dialog and the time spent in front of the computer to put together your editing tricks. Every successful RUclipsr has his or her own style, and yours is pretty distinct. Kudos, dude.

    I can't comment on the other lenses in this review but the 25mm f1.7 is the default lens on my camera. It just works. Every time. It's perfect for street photography or for situations where you don't know what to bring...it's got the speed and with it being a standard prime, you can almost always make it work!

    Hi Kim. Nice round up.
    A massive deal is usually made of how slow the 20mm is. I've had it for 7 years and have never found focus speed to be a limitation. Tyson Robichaud made a good video demonstrating how, in real terms, it's actually perfectly fine. It's just slower than other M43 lenses, which are typically lightning quick. Sure, it's not good for fast moving kids, but neither is M43's contrast detect AF, which can't track fast moving subjects anyway.
    I'm not saying the 20 is quick, I'm just saying that if you aren't shooting fast moving targets it's absolutely fine, and that people shouldn't discount it simply because it's become common to describe it as slow. It's slower, rather than slow. And in good light it's actually pretty damned quick.
    On the 25mm's, one thing to bear in mind is the size. The Olympus is sharper than the Panasonic 1.7, smaller, and comes with a nice reversible hood. I chose it over the Panasonic 1.4 as my camera fits in a smaller bag with it mounted. Personally, I find it significantly better than the other two for that reason. Context is everything.

    • @KimCruz1
      @KimCruz1  6 лет назад

      Graham Ashton that’s so true and for a lot of my work now where I’m doing lots of candid environmental portraiture of fast moving subjects, I’m finding it increasingly difficult to use the 20mm.. the image quality is stunning, especially for the price though!

      Kim Cruz After I posted my comment I remembered the GF1's amazing support for hyperfocal focusing. Have you seen it? You can pre focus the lens, switch to MF, then save that setting to the C1 preset. Turning the camera on with C1 selected then focuses the lens to that distance on power up. Mental, and very useful if you will be using a smaller aperture.
      There are a couple of forum posts/comments on blogs out there with the steps in. It worked great on my GF1, I'm not sure if later bodies still support it.

    • @KimCruz1
      @KimCruz1  6 лет назад

      i have to say i've never heard of that feature but that sounds really useful! i'm not a fan of how the focus always resets when you power off the body!

    Panasonic 25mm f:1.7 focus shifts like hell from 2.8 to 4.0, has a huge focus breath for video and unless you correct chromatic aberrations in camera, it provides you a ton. In all these aspect the Olympus counterpart works like a breze and there is where all the money it costs more pay off.

      oh easy man.. if you need a prime that can shoot wider- one you can use for almost anything- when you're out, when you're with friends or family, or just anything else, go with the 20.. 25 won't be as versatile but will give you faster autofocus

    Kim : I am going to be making a decision about which way
    to go with Lumix lenses, my second and third ones from what will be
    available to me:. I have a GF2 w/ a 14mm 2.5 w/ EVF and a LX 3 as sort
    of a backup pocket camera, which gives me a 24 ~90 mm option. Do I go
    long, short or stay in the middle as I add a Lumix lens or two to
    another GF2 [previously mounting older Zeiss lenses ]. Within my budget
    choices are a used 25 mm l.4, a used 30 mm 2.8 macro and a used 20 mm
    l.7, a new 42.5 1.7, new 35-100 or a new 45-200. Fallback position would
    be new or used 14-42 or used 12-32 kit lenses as option with either the
    20 mm l.7 or the 30 mm macro. Where would you put the money?

    • @KimCruz1
      @KimCruz1  5 лет назад

      Hi there! Honestly it all depends on what you like to shoot so... what do you like to shoot? haha
      As a general rule, it's always safer to go with a wider to middle option because those lenses are more versatile, but if you want to start building a kit, it's always best to know what is important to you. For me, I like to shoot videos for RUclips and do some commercial work, so my kit has to be well rounded- something ultra wide, lenses between 12-25mm (equivalent 24-50), and a couple of lenses for nice creamy backgrounds- but not a great need for telephoto lenses or macro lenses.
      Back to you, if you already have the 14mm 2.5 and want a more well rounded kit, I would suggest getting the 42.5mm 1.7, so you have the combo of wide lens, and then a tight one for a nice blurry background, or the 25mm 1.4 as a more versatile option (sometimes you can carry around just the 25mm 1.4 and have the compromise of both worlds- personally, I prefer to have a wide and tight lens separately).
      When thinking about the 35-100 (assuming this isn't the 2.8 version) and 45-200, remember that these are really really long lenses, it's not something you will necessarily use everyday unless you're into birding or landscapes or something like that... they also aren't particularly sharp (not like a prime anyway) so just remember, they might not get as much use unless you are very deliberate about it.
      As for the kit lenses, honestly I find use in having them, I always have the 12-32 around, however you already have the LX3 so it solves that issue.
      Most of all, it's really about what YOU want to shoot. Do you prefer shooting wide? Do you prefer shooting tight? Do you want to dabble in macro? Do you want a lens for blurry backgrounds? It comes down to you and your use case, answer those questions, delve a little more into what you like to shoot and hopefully you can find your answer :)

      @@KimCruz1 Thanks for your detailed responses: . After I had asked I thought: what would I say, and actually I had said something on a Facebook vintage camera users post to a similar question: it comes down to what you like to shoot and how you shoot. If you like scenery, landscapes, cloudscapes, cityscapes, whatever, go wide; and also if you move fluidly through crowds', and I have that with the 14 mm. And if you engage and like people and portraiture, the basic 50 mm lens works fine, and obviously go long for things you mention, but also if you sort of stalk your subjects, and prefer to work off from them.And if I were active as a photo journalist, the longer lens would be essential. So sort of melding your answers and wisdom and my existing gear, and looking into my heart of hearts, I'll probably go with the 50 mm l.4 ...hoping I am not being too seduced because it is a LEICA and realizing I am passing up 20 and 30 mm brackets as well as the really fast for its length 42.5. I can't thank you enough for your time and energy.

      Kim Cruz yes i know that, the purpose of this lens will be to do a more cinematic look to my vlogs, more like B Roll purpose, but when I’m recording myself I’ll be using the other wide angle lens, this one usually will be for the scenes where I will use my gimbal

    Thx!

    • @KimCruz1
      @KimCruz1  6 лет назад

      not a problem man and thanks for the sub! well here's the thing.. it depends on what kind of set up you want. if you just want 1 lens to be your do it all + bokeh lens, then the 25mm 1.4 is for you.. the bokeh won't be as shallow as getting the 45mm 1.8 olympus, or the 42.5mm 1.7 panasonic, but it's good enough...
      however, if you want a 2 lens setup, then get a 20mm 1.7, and then either the 42.5mm 1.7 or the 45mm 1.8...
      if money were not an issue at all, get the 12mm 1.4, the 20mm 1.7, the 25mm 1.4, and the 42.5mm 1.2 lol... i mean we can all dream right? lol

    • @mathildeqgn5443
      @mathildeqgn5443 6 лет назад

      Haha, you're right that would be a dream set!! :)
      Hum... interesting ! I would like a do it all kind of lens, so the 25mm is interesting, and I've also heard wonderful reviews on it. But I prefer the focal length of the 20mm, for the same reasons as you, so there's the dilemma!
      I got make a decision haha!
      Thanks for helping me out ;)

  • @tbd3602

    do you think that the 12-35 covers so much its like having a few primes

    • @KimCruz1
      @KimCruz1  5 лет назад +1

      personally when i've used it i found it a bit.. lackluster? not because of the quality of the lens or anything like that.. but if it was a full frame camera, an F2.8 gets you pretty shallow depth of field already but on M43 it doesn't... that was my first grip.. secondly, because it's m43 the high ISO performance isn't as great as well so having a F1.7 or 1.8 lens is more than a stop more light than the F2.8. This is really important to me because sometimes i shoot events that are indoors and I need as much light as I can get...
      so in short, if you're ok with the f2.8 depth of field and the less light, it's fine. it's great for flexiblity and being able to zoom while you shoot (great for long for video for events) but don't expect really nice bokeh or anything like that! also great build and some weather sealing so it should last you for a long time!

      Last month I bought an Olympus 45mm F1.8 and Panasonic Lumix 25mm F1.7 for my Olympus OM-D E-M5 camera during a sale in my country (Malaysia). They are my 1st prime lense. All this time I’ve been using an Olympus standard kit lens and an Olympus cheap telephoto lens. So far I have only tried the Panasonic 25mm and haven’t touch the Olympus 45mm.
