Good. I'm glad they're having another go at the scope. Last time I played Black Mesa, I ended up virtually never using the crossbow at all, for one because it tanked my already less-than-ideal framerate in some areas, and also because I seem to recall the mouse sensitivity when using the scope didn't change compared to normal aiming, so a small move of the mouse made it fly somewhere else entirely. It didn't help that it was zoomed in waaaaay too much. Just a fuckup of a sniper equivalent all 'round, to be honest.
Just depends on the method used in implementing it, I suppose. I think the Red Orchestra/Rising Storm games work the same way, and they too have better performance. Though the Insurgency comparison is more apt due to it also being on the Source engine. I don't really mind the feature going. It doesn't really add anything to Black Mesa like it does in something like Rising Storm or Insurgency.
After all the beautiful changes they made to the rest of the game I can't imagine they put that in with the intention of leaving it there. I doubt they even put that in there in the first place, seems like a joke from Sprizzy, maybe the way they changed it was not very good so he just over exaggerated it.

I am assuming it's a temporary hack-job until they properly fix the old one (it was probably thrown together by a dev in an hour to show the now working crossbow zoom without the broken effects it used to have)

Though I don't like the new scope because it looks like a badly cropped jpeg image because I can still see the white outline. It also doesn't have an animation so it looks weird to me.

The rays and lens flares actually make sense once you remember that Gordon is wearing glasses. As someone who wears glasses himself, I can confirm that if the lenses aren't perfectly clear, they really do have a ray effect when looking at light sources - and considering the kind of filth Gordon routinely crawls through, it's a genuine miracle that he can still see in low-lit areas.
Half-Life , Half-Life 2 , Portal 1 / 2 , Left4Dead2 should remastered with Source2 engine. ( these games are LEGENDARY ) AND... The crossbow scope is a fucking stupid ideas.

This makes the scope easier to aim and increases performance by removing a second rendering pass. It also fixes a number of visual bugs with using the scope throughout the game." tl;dr: the change was a performance/intuitiveness pass, not a realism one. the zoom is way too fucking low though, and the default reticle is absolutely disgusting (in a bad way).
It also covers up the nice texture work on the actual eye with an improbably bright eye (also how the fuck does it see if its eye generates the same amount of light as a road flare?).
So, the update can be sumarized with "Black mesa, now with more glowing things, also we changed the crossbow a bit, but you probably not gonna like it, sooooo..."
I think we're waiting this long because they want to change Xen into something better, like probably something more worthwhile to play. Not everyone liked how Xen was in the original, so they are completely changing it.
TheLiznaith at this point, it is fair to expect Xen to become it's own game. Because it wasn't just a couple of chapters - it was a new experience. Plus, this is an *ALIEN* world, there's plenty of room for creativity, even if staying true to original Half Life.

Personally I don't like the glowing Vortiguant eye. They don't have lightbulbs as eyes! Also, the crossbows zoom in feature does t really zoom in much now :(

However, if you want to play the 2017 December Update, follow these instructions: Go on your library>Right Click on Black Mesa>Go on Properties>Click on BETAS>Select Public Beta>Then click CLOSE>Then give it time to install the update. The impressive tech in the questionable ethics lab isn't the giant laser or the portable gaus gun weapon. It's the inch-thick screen that somehow stops that hammer-of-the-gods laser cannon's beam over and over.
Well, now they should concentrate on tweaking engine in such way the player wouldn't be constantly stuck on corners, small props and 1mm unevenness on floors and walls.
It's a small thing, but ever since I noticed that the B&W monitor in the test chamber showed the goings on in the control room as seen from a security camera, and I noticed that scientist movement as seen directly and as seen through the monitor matched up, I've thought of that as one of the more impressive examples of attention to detail in the whole game. Too bad that's pretty much gone now; hope they bring it back in the final version.

I knew the scope issue gets a lot of flak but I thought that is kinda bearable compared to the things that are plain broken - the spectrometer room camera zooms way too high and is all over the place, the rocket launch screen, the big screen that's supposed to show everything, shows nothing and is just a disappointment. As a side note, was quite miffed by the streetlamps and chainlink fences in the rocket launch area - that's just so illogical, like wouldn't that stuff simply melt on exhaust? Broke my immersion a little. When I saw the scope at the end, I realised that I would gladly sacrifice all the points I made before just so that flash-game google image with instant pop scope would get fixed
The 2015 suit inspection animation made Gordon look like he has ADHD, he just flapped his hands around for no reason lol (as someone with ADHD I do that with my hands sometimes)
Do you have to manually verify the game files to get the update cause I just played the game yesterday and none of that new stuff was included, most noticeably the crossbow zoom
So they added some Lens Flares and Gloom Lighting standard to the Engine. Sure why not. This can all be added to the 2015 Edition via SweetFX or ReShade (Lens Flares, extra Lighting, Fx, etc), but if it's standard with the Engine with no performance impact, why not, for the people that don't know about SweetFX / ReShade.
I think you messed up the Vortigaunt, Houndeye, and the Crossbow. While I was playing in the 2017 update, none looks like that awful made craps. The crossbow scope is also exactly like the 2015 version.
Great work man! It is cool that they released a new update but instead of changing the shaders they could have finally made xen, this is what the game needs to be complete. They give you the jump module and the cool weapons at the end of the game but you never have the option to fight the boss with it
Those lens flares like Directed by Micheal Bay lol but everything is just great exactly rocket launch but except crossbow. This one not bad too but seems like Photoshopped bad quality png. I hope they change it asap and bring back lens effect. About long jump it would be hard to use new controls for me

The suit is like a force filed, it will need constant charging to keep that force field up. However, when it has no power, the suit is useless and bullets can easily destroy the suit which doesn't give any protection to the user at all. It surprises me that Gordon isn't wearing a helmet in the first game. In real life, one shot to the head and Gordon's down.
The lighting changes are nice, but the lens flares are a bit over the top. You can't clearly even see the portal from the beginning because of them, and it's really hard to look at in general. The Vortigaunt and Houndeye changes look hilariously out of place, as does the Crossbow's.
i prefer the new zoom level, since that it's not-in-the face so much like the old one. Thought it does need to be refined more so that it's not a poorly drawn static image.
Problem is, it still looks like it was made in 2008 at the latest. Doom 3 was a graphical comparison. Still blocky looking in general, everywhere. Computers and control panels that look like they are from the 2000's. ..... I am not complaining in-so-much, that I got Black Mesa when it was free. (For that I will always be thankful.) However it means I will not rush to buy it when the Zen part is added and it's complete. Even though Zen in HL, was the icing on the cake, and the part that made it the whole masterpiece. ... (I don't know, maybe I should not try to predict what I will do. I wish the developers best of luck with it.)
It's on Public Beta. You will have to go into your library, right click on Black Mesa. Select Properties, click on the BETAS tab, then select the public beta and click ok. Then you will have to give it time to download. Hoped that helped :)

Worse, the 2015 version literally broke the skyboxes. Go into Surface Tension and zoom in with the scope. The entire skybox fucks up completely.

The lighting is far more dynamic in the 2017 version (shadow casting). Plus god rays and lens flare.

For anyone wondering, yeah, they changed the scope back to what it was, they probably changed it in the first place because it feels weird to look at.

It's a small thing, but ever since I noticed that the B&W monitor in the test chamber showed the goings on in the control room as seen from a security camera, and I noticed that scientist movement as seen directly and as seen through the monitor matched up, I've thought of that as one of the more impressive examples of attention to detail in the whole game. Too bad that's pretty much gone now; hope they bring it back in the final version.

I knew the scope issue gets a lot of flak but I thought that is kinda bearable compared to the things that are plain broken - the spectrometer room camera zooms way too high and is all over the place, the rocket launch screen, the big screen that's supposed to show everything, shows nothing and is just a disappointment. As a side note, was quite miffed by the streetlamps and chainlink fences in the rocket launch area - that's just so illogical, like wouldn't that stuff simply melt on exhaust? Broke my immersion a little.
When I saw the scope at the end, I realised that I would gladly sacrifice all the points I made before just so that flash-game google image with instant pop scope would get fixed
The 2015 suit inspection animation made Gordon look like he has ADHD, he just flapped his hands around for no reason lol (as someone with ADHD I do that with my hands sometimes)
Do you have to manually verify the game files to get the update cause I just played the game yesterday and none of that new stuff was included, most noticeably the crossbow zoom

So they added some Lens Flares and Gloom Lighting standard to the Engine. Sure why not. This can all be added to the 2015 Edition via SweetFX or ReShade (Lens Flares, extra Lighting, Fx, etc), but if it's standard with the Engine with no performance impact, why not, for the people that don't know about SweetFX / ReShade.

I think you messed up the Vortigaunt, Houndeye, and the Crossbow.
While I was playing in the 2017 update, none looks like that awful made craps.
The crossbow scope is also exactly like the 2015 version.

It is cool that they released a new update but instead of changing the shaders they could have finally made xen, this is what the game needs to be complete.
They give you the jump module and the cool weapons at the end of the game but you never have the option to fight the boss with it
Those lens flares like Directed by Micheal Bay lol but everything is just great exactly rocket launch but except crossbow. This one not bad too but seems like Photoshopped bad quality png. I hope they change it asap and bring back lens effect. About long jump it would be hard to use new controls for me
Bro, have you ever heard of V-Sync?
You're running 200-300 FPS without V-Sync and the result looks like 25 FPS, choppy as hell. Gave me a headache.
Quick suggestion, you should use console commands such as noclip or god mode so you dont have to focus on killing aliens.
Imagine the L4D games or Portal games with this graphics

The suit is like a force filed, it will need constant charging to keep that force field up. However, when it has no power, the suit is useless and bullets can easily destroy the suit which doesn't give any protection to the user at all.
It surprises me that Gordon isn't wearing a helmet in the first game. In real life, one shot to the head and Gordon's down.
tbh the version of Black Mesa 2012 was more optimized and is looking FAR BETTER than the steam version that we have today

The lighting changes are nice, but the lens flares are a bit over the top. You can't clearly even see the portal from the beginning because of them, and it's really hard to look at in general. The Vortigaunt and Houndeye changes look hilariously out of place, as does the Crossbow's.

I see what they were trying to do with the scope (giving you feild of view) but it was poorly exicuted.

I'll be first to admit I'm wrong about this early access. They do seem to be actually improving, if slowly. Hope they get better voice actors though.

i prefer the new zoom level, since that it's not-in-the face so much like the old one.
Thought it does need to be refined more so that it's not a poorly drawn static image.
Problem is, it still looks like it was made in 2008 at the latest. Doom 3 was a graphical comparison. Still blocky looking in general, everywhere. Computers and control panels that look like they are from the 2000's. ..... I am not complaining in-so-much, that I got Black Mesa when it was free. (For that I will always be thankful.) However it means I will not rush to buy it when the Zen part is added and it's complete. Even though Zen in HL, was the icing on the cake, and the part that made it the whole masterpiece. ... (I don't know, maybe I should not try to predict what I will do. I wish the developers best of luck with it.)

It's on Public Beta. You will have to go into your library, right click on Black Mesa. Select Properties, click on the BETAS tab, then select the public beta and click ok. Then you will have to give it time to download. Hoped that helped :)
