- Largely overcast weather in the Scottish Highlands for the last couple of weeks of this years 'Jacobite' trains operated by West Coast Railways. We visited from Wednesday 18th.October until Tuesday 24th. LNER K1 No.62005 was in service until Friday 20th. when LMS Black Five took over for the final week of this years operation. Most of the video was filmed between Wednesday and Friday, when although mostly cloudy, there was the rare bright patch with Friday afternoon seeing very still conditions on the lochs. Locations as follows;
45407 - Fort William Junction
62005 - Corpach followed by Glenfinnan Viaduct
Two views of 45407 and 62005 climbing away from Glenfinnan
Two views at Beasdale Tunnel No.3 of 62005 and 45407
45407 - Beasdale Station
Two views of 45407 approaching Morar and working away
62005 - Loch Dubh
62005 - Loch Nan Uamh Viaduct
45407 - Loch Eilt
All these TV companies who produced weird shots of wheels going round and drown out the sound of the Loco with silly music should be made to watch your videos, this is how to make a video of steam trains, Brilliant, thankyou for your efforts, they are much appreciated.
Thanks for your kind comments. I know what you mean about TV producers and railways!
Fantastic journey and scenery, I just love Scotland 👍🏴
Thank you, glad you enjoyed the video
Just stunning, there’s no way to describe it further. I’m not trying to start a “which engine is better” debate, but there’s something wonderful about 62005, it’s such a beautiful engine.
Many thanks for your kind comments. The K1 is the right loco for the line which adds to the appeal
acw71000 Especially because the line was LNER stamping grounds, especially for the K1s!
Thanks for selecting great locations which showed off the beautiful scenery of my homeland (now in Florida). Have been on the Jacobite twice and had great weather on both trips.
Thanks for watching. It's not hard to find good locations in Scotland. Keep safe in Florida
Absolutely stunning! Autumn scenery in Scotland! Your camera work is one of the best on RUclips for trains. Just my opinion but well done again.
Many thanks for your kind comments
Bravo and thank you Austin for this wonderful video in the beautiful scenery of the Scottish Highlands. Philippe
Thank you Philippe, it is a pleasure to film trains in such wonderful scenery
Great video. Stunning scenery. Would have loved a snippet of Mallaig. Such a pretty place with all the fishing boats. Thanks heaps.
Many thanks Joyce, glad you enjoyed the video. Although I didn't include any shots of Mallaig in this video I did in this one! ruclips.net/video/9Ta1FOGsPlU/видео.html
Super shots been on it, done it & got the tea shirt
An excellent video with the trains set in great scenery.
Not lease the sound is very good giving the locomotives all the attention and not any background music.
Thanks for your kind comments. I think all railway enthusiasts dread a musical soundtrack!
Once again Austin, you and Pam have been blessed with nigh on perfect conditions for your trip up to Scotland. This resulted in a stunning piece of work, especially the reflections in the last clip.....Bob
Thanks Bob, weather could have been better really. We were there from Tuesday to Tuesday as there was a possibility of a charter over the weekend and were lucky to get three days when the weather was mostly dry and still with the best reflections on the Friday. Only managed one shot on Monday due to the rain and we decided to head back early on the Tuesday as it was heavy rain once again!
Oh you lucky man Austin. A wonderfully absorbing video. You don't need sun when you've got steam in scenery like this. A superb workout for locos and crews. Thanks for sharing. Take care - Chris
Thanks Chris, the scenery is wonderful and makes such a wonderful backdrop for steam
New Jacobite is fantastic...best rail video i have seen in years...BRILLIANT!
Thanks for your kind comments, glad you enjoyed the video
Thanks for the annual treat Austin!
Noel
My pleasure Noel, hope you enjoyed it
Excellent really enjoyed it and thanks for sharing.
Andy.
Thanks Andy, glad you enjoyed it
Lovely bread and butter class 5 locomotives that embroidered my trainspotting days in the early sixties spotting mainly on the LMR and North Eastern regions of dear old B.R. Glorious Steam in glorious surroundings lovely filming ,thanks .
Thanks very much, it was good to have been able to catch both locos this visit, The wonderful scenery is a great backdrop for steam
Superb Austin , can't pick a shot that was better than the first as they were all bang on especially the start .
Thanks Steve, enjoyed being able to film both locos this time but the weather meant we couldn't do a couple of the planned shots
As a former support crew member, I really enjoyed this. the choice of locations to film from was different to the many other vidoes of the Jacobite and made this one of the very best. Great stuff. Thanks, Bill
Cheers Bill, I'd planned some different locations but didn't get to them all due to the poor weather. Very fortunate to have managed three and a half days without getting wet!
brilliant videography ACW!! Such natural beauty - you didnt allow the engine to dominate the gorgeous countryside!!
Thanks very much. I always believe you have to show the scenery that the trains run through as much as possible
So that's where you've been! You missed some action here, but, oh, what a replacement! Dreamy images and superb panning. Real treat from start to finish. Thanks Austin!
Thanks Alan, weather could have been kinder but you go to mountainous areas at your peril!
Super video, Austin. Wonderful scenery with Autumnal colours. Loved the pan across the loch at 14mins. Keith.
Thanks Keith, the day I filmed across the loch was the best for weather with lovely reflections in the lochs
Wow! This is brilliant, with selections of wonderful backdrop scenery. Footage of the trains is grand, magnificent, just a super treat to watch. Super work.
Thanks Allison, for a wonderful backdrop to steam working hard, there are few places better than Scotland
Loved the video, well done.
That is the most beautiful footage I have ever seen of a train. The sounds, colours and ambience were caught extremely well. Thank you for sharing this with me. Regards, Brian.
Thank you for your kind comments Brian. Although the weather wasn't the best it did make for some interesting conditions. I'm pleased you enjoyed the video
I got into English steam from videos of Stanier's Black 5s and 8fs, but the clip of the K1 at 6:37 is almost enough to sway me to LNER...Almost! I rode the line in 2018 with my family behind a Black 5. Cheers from Colorado!
Thanks for watching. I do like the K1 especially as she is a loco built for the line but the Black Fives do a great job there, as everywhere! Hopefully if we get out of the current mess there will be a shortened season of trains this year. Stay safe!
Superb video as always. The noise of the K1 about 6:34mins in is fantastic!
Thanks very much. Although the K1 was very noisy at that location I think I may have had the microphone turned up higher than normal as well!
Absolutely superb Austin.....Loved it.....You Film from some amazing locations....Will watch this again and again......Best wishes....Steve.
Thanks Steve, sadly the weather meant we couldn't do some of the locations we wanted but at least we got 3 1/2 decent days filming
An excellent video. One of your very best. Thanks for sharing.
Many thanks for your kind comments
Stunning 👍👍👍
Thank you, not difficult filming with that wonderful scenery!
Just one word ----Perfection . Loved it from start to finish
Many thanks, glad you enjoyed it
What camera did you use? Brilliant results for October. Larry McGeary.
Panasonic VX870 Larry
Beautiful videography! Fantastic scenery and great angles and locations many of which I have not seen others do. Like also that you aren't afraid of filming tender first operating. Very nice!
Thank you for your kind comments. I'm not a fan of tender first shots but some of the locations on the West Highland are good enough to try it, especially if you can capture the train side on
Beautifully filmed and presented as usual. We expect no less!
Thanks very much for your kind comments, much appreciated
Fantastic video Austin.captured the line in its full glory. Really enjoyable watching. Brought memories back to us when we were there in April when we followed the GBX . You got some amazing footage with the autumn colours. That last clip we captured, but not as good as yours as the loch was nice and still. Superb through out Best wishes C&A
Thanks very much. The autumn is a nice time to visit with the colours, sadly this time we didn't get enough decent weather
Just stunning Austin! I nearly got on board this autumn, except there were no guaranteed tickets, so couldn't risk taking four people from Nairn to Fort William in case we couldn't get on board! Went on the Strathspey instead. Cheers, Brian
Thanks Brian, the trains sell out very quickly so you need to book well in advance
They do indeed. That's the 2nd unsuccessful attempt at riding The Jacobite - and we tried to book at least 4 months in advance! Only 'turn up and go' tickets were available on the days we could travel - we just couldn't risk the hours of driving and then be disappointed. WCR must be doing well on the income.
Well done for a super set of shots. I did this trip some 15 years ago - and loved it! Would like to return and see it in more detail as you have.
Many thanks Julian, it is rightly described as one of the best railway journeys in the world
Austin, what a fantastic video, its the best I've seen so far. you had everything going for it, the scenery, the weather, the trains, and of course your ability to capture the best locations, just for us, I'm sure West Coast Railways would be interested in this video to promote their venues.
Thanks John, weather could have been kinder but that's the risk at this time of year in mountainous areas. Believe me, West Coast have far better promotional videos of the Jacobite than this one!
Lovely......just lovely. Dave.
Many thanks Dave
If I were asked to say which was the best video i had watched in 2017 this great one would get my vote! Thank you so much for uploading it!
Many thanks for your kind comments.
Very nice video! 🚂👍
Thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed it
Brilliant, must go back to Scotland,
Thank you. It's always worth a visit to Scotland!
Excellent shots Austin, each shot special in there own way. It's on my list of things to video too. Regards JamesandPeter
Thanks James, I can recommend a visit, you won't be disappointed
Superb video. Must go and see this some time
Keep up the good work
Many thanks. It's well worth a visit to Scotland, you won't be disappointed
Outstanding stuff Austin, really enjoyed that!
Many thanks, the autumn colours were pretty good this year and provided a great backdrop for hard working steam
Great shots... loved it!!! Hugh
Thanks Hugh for your much appreciated comments
Austin, what can I say in addition? Perhaps to recognise this as a veritable master-class! Many thanks for sharing and kind regards, Bob.
Many thanks for your kind comments Bob, glad you enjoyed the video
Great video Austin.
Regards
Jake
Cheers Jake, thanks for watching
Spitzen Aufnahmen!!!
Danke fürs Zuschauen. Bleib sicher
Amazing job!
A lot of emotions in the video.
Can you give me all the spots that you have been used ? I want to "hunt" the train this summer
Thank you
Thanks for watching. I'll put the location details in the description in the next few days.
Spettacolo 👍🏻👍🏻
Grazie. Felice che il video ti sia piaciuto
Nicely put together! Two separate runs here? The weather is nicely consistent, how'd you get two day without rain in Scotland?? 😂
Thanks very much. We were there for a week and filmed every day, pretty lucky with weather each time I've been up to film!
This is the best set of videos of the Jacobite that I’ve seen till date, what would be the right time of the year in order to photograph this train at the best of Scotland’s scenery? Also, expecting more of these when the service restarts, great stuff! Applaud the efforts.
Thank you for your kind comments. I've been to this area in May which was very nice but I prefer the autumn when the autumn colours are really nice. My best visit for colours and lovely still conditions was in 2012, see this video (apologies for the plug!) ruclips.net/video/tqDQAsXS1iU/видео.html
This must have slipped by m,e when it came out. Very enjoyable, needless to say. The K1 puts up a very strong show for its size , doesn't it. Whistle certainly carries a long way.
Thank you, I do like the K1 especially as it is on 'home territory' as it were on the West Highland line
beautiful footage! can i use some of this footage for a short film i am making for school? i will credit you!
Hello Saffron, yes I'm happy for you to use some of the footage for your project. Good Luck with it!
Hi there, would you be willing to allow us to use a brief excerpt of your footage for a music video - it is a cover of a Big Country song and in the original they had some footage of the train back in the 80S which we are trying to reference. We would credit you of course.
Hi, yes that sounds good, no problem using a part of the video. If you remember could you let me know when the video is uploaded so I can watch it, cheers.
'luverly stuff!
Cheers Del
Excellent. Scotland is on our wish list for 2018. But it is a long drive from Paris. We travel with our dachshund and dogs are not accepted in Eurostar. Otherwise, we would go by train, of course.
Thank you. It certainly is a long drive from Paris, perhaps you could break the journey with a visit to some of the preserved railways in south east England before heading north
Can someone help me with a question, please? Many months ago, whilst reading through comments somebody passed a remark about a particular driver who had the ability to adjust the regulator keenly ,and, was able to make the engines give a special "fluttering" sound. The driver had, sadly, passed, and,I've searched trying to find that video again, but, without luck. Can anyone remember the video,or,who the driver was, please? Thanks for your response, Steve. I'm still searching.
Don't know if this was the one Allison but there was a driver named Paul Kane who drove the Jacobite trains who passed away at a relatively young age a few years ago
@@acw71000 Thanks so much for your response. I'm searching for the video as well. I vaguely recall the footage, but,it was similar to a video of LMS 46233 Over the S & C on the CME 22/7/2017. One of these days I might be lucky,or,someone may remember their comments on the footage. Why? It's just driving my nutty, because I can't remember. I will keep the name you mentioned. It could very well have been that driver, but, the discussion was aimed at the driver's ability to adjust the regulator, and, apparently he was known for the particular "sound" he managed to create. Awrabest,Allison
One of the best known drivers was a gentleman named Bill Andrew who retired several years ago and another was Gordon Hodgson who retired a year ago. Gordon was very popular with railway enthusiasts because of his style of driving!
I want a tiny live steam one to ride on in my backyard please.
Don't we all!
Superb! It is a great railway and wonderful to see the Autumn colours in such clarity! May I ask what camcorder you are using? Mine needs upgrading and I am trying to decide to what make and model.
Thanks very much for your kind comments. As you have discovered I did use an X920 until earlier this year when I bought a Panasonic VX870 which shoots in 4K. First time I used it was for the Foxfield gala. I'd still recommend the X920 if you can find one as it is still a fine camera and has the advantage over the X870 in that it has three imaging chips so filming in low light is much better than the X870 which only has the one. I'm waiting for them to bring out a 4K version of the X920 which would be perfect!
Thank you very much for the info. The quality of the picture on this video is absolutely first class . Was it taken with the VX87o or the X920 I wonder. I would expect its the former as it does appear even better than some of your earlier videos. which were great anyway!
Sadly I find neither the X920 of the VX870 is currently produced by Panasonic but Currys do currently advertise a VX870 which I may well chase!
This one was filmed entirely with the X870 in 4K. I bought mine in Currys when it was heavily reduced in price and there was also a Panasonic cashback offer on it too
It does produce some superb video, under your guidance of course! Thank you.
Always beautiful steam at great shots... - Austin be honest, do you use special filters? - Heinz
Thank you Heinz. No I don't use any filters, this is just as it was recorded through the camera lens
Sure? No magic lenses? :D
I wish!
... the sound is mono ... there must be a mistake somewhere ?
No, the sound is recorded in two channel mono
Cool
