I made it all the way to Ex 17 of B2 in 6 months and then life happened last Jan--I took the worst job in my 50 years of working--and I stopped painting due to the stresses created by the manager from hell I reported to. I did get Ex 17 completed and submitted over a couple of weeks, but it was a herculean effort to say the least. Long story short, the issues that existed this year resolved themselves a couple of months ago, and I have a new job, but I feel like I've lost all my momentum in evolve, and worse, the confidence I had at the end of Block 1. I'm not a fan of proportional measuring in the first place, but it does have a reason and it's good training. I've completed 2 drawings for Ex 18. I measured sketches with the old knitting needle and thumb, transferred the 2 drawings to canvas--then I froze and walked away. The anxiety left behind after the work experience this year is dissipating, but still lingers and even a drawing takes days--or a couple of weeks--because I'll draw a few lines, feel anxious as hell, and walk away. Then, I get depressed, and eventually guilt brings me back to the easel more than desire. I'll draw a few lines more, walk away, and so on until the drawing is complete. I rant all of this to you because your video did something wonderful too me today. I walked away from your video, set up a 3rd composition, this time very simple so I'd have no excuses, drew it, transferred it to canvas and now I'm half way through painting it. I'm still taking breaks tonight, but they are a few minutes and not a few days. Thank you for sharing your journey. In my case, this video flipped a switch and has be back to painting again. "Surviving & Completing Block 2" could not have been a better title for me to watch the video and you get the credit for getting my 'get up and go' up going again. I'll finish Ex 18 tonight and submit before I go to bed, then it's on to Ex 19--and maybe one of the 2 drawings I've been too afraid to paint. If not, then I'll set up another simple still life and 'get er done' on Ex 19 and 20. THANK YOU for this video! You just never know the impact one of these things can have on some stranger far away. Namaste.

Thank you for the comment and I'm glad the video helped you! Having a stressful job takes a lot out of a person and there needs to be time to recover. I'm glad that you are back on track with the program and it's okay to step away sometimes. It's always good to come back with a fresh mind. Have you completed Block 2 yet? I just completed Block 3 and I'll be working on a video update on that soon!

I find block 2 hard but likely because I need to get fitted with a pair of prism glasses, my eyes are misaligned. That said I have slowly and carefully worked my way through it.

OK, so I finally made it out of block 1 and made it to block 2! I did the first assignment but going into the second assignment im already confused with the explantion of how to take measurements. Maybe im overthinking this but im hearing 'measure with the kneading needle' use the ruler to 'draw the shapes.' I guess my issue is im not understanding what they expect because how can I get the measurements from a needle and not use the ruler? I really think im hearing them tell me to get my numbers from the needle instead of the ruler! Im just trying to survive this long enough to get my second box of paint lolol

It does sound confusing! Have you reached out to an instructor yet? You use one of your still life objects as a standard unit of measure (1) to measure the other objects. The ruler just gives you a precise number to draw it on the canvas. If i have a still life of an orange and a golf ball, the orange would be 1.5 golf balls high and I would use the ruler to draw the height and width on the canvas.

I loveee the mermaid one!!! I really enjoyed block 2 (I have just two paintings left) but it feels like I’m pretty much done, so I think I need to step it up for the last two

You can do it! It will feel great once you're done with Block 2, like reaching the top of a mountain!

Did you paint the interior of your box? Your photos look cool with the black background and gray bottom surface. Mine just looks like brown cardboard. 🙂

I didn't paint the interior. The box was already black and there's an insert that's placed in the bottom that is also black. If I want to change the colors I use felt or construction paper. It's a pretty decent box and it's served me well so far. I got it from Ikea!
