    I'm chomping at the bits to get everything going! Starting from nothing, first container garden. Sometimes it feels overwhelming. Got compost bins started...had to go to someone's else property to get composting material...lol. I have managed to get some onions and potatoes going. Sweet potato slips looking good in my window sill; and for fun my avocado has rooted! I know it won't be much this first year, but at least it's started, right? Keep at it y'all! Food from your own garden is the best! ETA: I also got a red wiggler worm bed started! I love it!

    Robbie, you've really inspired me to improve my bird garden. The squirrels eat lots of my bird food, but it gives my old Chihuahua a little exercise to chase them off when we go outside. 🤣 I have to bring my feeders in at night, because we have black bears that will come over my fence and tear my feeders up, plus the raccoons. I'm going to add some sunflowers this year to my bird garden.
    I enjoy your videos so much, and especially Kitty!💕🐶🐾

    I love the chair garden. I started growing in containers two years ago and love how easy it is. This year I will do so in the totes and on the chairs. Where did you find the different color totes? I can't find them at any of the stores here in NC. This set up is perfect for me as I will be relocating to a piece of land that has been cleared for a tiny house and has mainly pine trees surrounding it. The colorful chairs and totes will be a nice touch. Thank you for doing what you do and sharing all the good tips :)

    First of all, I really enjoy and appreciate all your videos, I wish I could afford to join but at this time it isn't possible so I enjoy the free ones. I have learned so much and this year I am going to try to start my own container garden, mostly I will be trying cardboard boxes and use dirt we got a few years ago to level out the yard, I've been saving scraps in my freezer to add because the dirt isn't very good quality. I've heard several people mention a food shortage and I find that terrifying and hope to plant enough to share. I am using seeds I've gotten from food, like green peppers and I'm going to try to grow potatoes from sprouted ones. Thank You again for all the effort you put into your videos.

    Oh Robbie, I love the views . That one at 2:30 is amazing , so is the collard .
    I looked at those tower planters at dollar tree and decided they were not going to work for much . My husband bought me a GreenStalk planter and I love it . I decided I am getting another one for Mother's Day this year so I planted my strawberry crowns in the GreenStalk I have and they are doing amazing. I am going to have to tulle it soon so they don't get the berries that will come up.

    I really enjoy your full tours. I pick up a lot of tips in them. Would you be able to do a video that specifically talks about which plants get massive roots or ones not so deep? When planting the totes amd putting two different plants it would be good to know which plants might be too competitive for nutrients. It would really help!

    • @homesteaderfiftywmartha603
      @homesteaderfiftywmartha603 2 года назад

      Most plants need 2 sq feet.. like tomatoes squash -some melons need 3 sq feet. - think of an iceburge. You could plant small stuff under the big stuff.. you can also get a square foot garden book and it will help you a lot. SquarefootGardening by Mel Barthamule

    • @bethbrec
      @bethbrec 2 года назад

      @@homesteaderfiftywmartha603 That sounds like a good book! Do you know if it talks about root depth? I'm wondering on root competition? Seems like the height and span can be found on the seed packs, but I'm wondering on root depth, competition for nutrients and how that factors in with the depth of totes/boxes in particular. Any books that you know of on that topic? Maybe Robbie's experience with many tote plantings could shed some light? (Edited for double word)

    I live in North Carolina and I love your gardens! I have started my own compost garden. Was so excited. Grew tomatoes, potatoes, and tested out carrots .... This year I'm starting my tomatoes from seed. II'm also trying microgreens. Too hot for lettuce. I like salad all year. But I don't have to buy potting soil! I keep getting more and more. Love it. Thanks so much for making the video's . Keep them coming. I have learned a lot from them. The hummers have been arriving for the past 2 weeks. I'm wanting to add the solar bird water features too. I potted one tree so far for the birds at the bird bath. Want to pot another this year too along with a flowering shrub. But love Spring and Fall. Good Luck and God bless.

    Love this tour!
    Shade for summer will be great in the bird garden. It will be good for you and for the birds. I find I am outside more in the summer when I have shade. Our shade went up when it got to the 90s. The nights are still cool, but our sun is very intense. I wanted my spring plants to have a bit more time, though several of my lettuces have started bolting. So of course, I have started more lettuces in the shade. Love succession growing.
    My birds seem to favor my lacinato kale. They hunt through the other plants but I have not seen them poke too many holes in the leaves. Hummers hunting small insects on the wing are so much fun.
    I got a curry plant too. I even did propagate it. Then I thought I didn't like it and started cutting it down, but it smelled so good and the birds actually love the flower heads and seeds, so I have left one next to my pond. It dies in winter. I do trim it a bit. It loves my hot summers, so that's a positive. There is also a small one I keep stepping on but it refuses to die. It actually is ok as an herb. The seed heads were a bit too furry but the leaves are fine.
    Gary's tree tomato plant lol. I think some of those unknowns are Jerusalem artichokes. That's definitely a lot of thorns. I do try to avoid things that are too thorny. I love your different gardening styles. I feel that you, Robbie, have a style better for most of us urban people. Gary's is more for people with a bit more space. I think both are good to see. We can all hope whichever way people want to grow, they will grow something.
    I always love seeing baby birds. The baby hummers is amazing. I can see the nests around the house are occupied again. I think I haven't heard babies yet but the adults are busy, which I love to see.
    The other things about gardens: I love when my husband or my sister wanders through and finds things to eat. Or when they go out to pick something for their meal. I love that I grew that!

    lol I love carpenter bees! I had some when I lived in KY. Now I'm in CA...haven't seen any. They are like little animals with a personality. Yes, they will come right in front of your face and get to know you...they never intimidated me. I heard only one will actually bite...can't remember if it was the male or female and that is if you get close to their nest. But I NEVER had them hurt me. They chased off the wasps from my porch and came out to visit me when I sat down there. Funny little critters.

    I make stir-fry and soup out of stinging nettles. Really good for our health. I grow it in the winter and use it. After it's wet and cooked it does not sting. If you get stung, just washing with soap and water will remove the burn. Also, if Dock is growing closeby rub some on the sting and it will calm down.

How are YOU going to water your massive garden in that So Cal heat? Do you sell or share your food when harvested? Robbie, love your videos❤ nettles really shouldn’t be eating fresh. When I’m even close to them they get me leave welts for a few mins. But the nutrition they have would be worth researching them. I would tell you my husband has been bald on for years he’s been drinking my beetles for months now and some hair is growing back. I looked it up and it blocks the enzyme I believe that causes baldness.

    I am not sure if you have a worm bin but if I don't have one, do I need to buy worm castings for my container garden? I have fish emulsion and soluble and insoluble fertilizer that was given to me. I would be happy if it is not a must. On a budget.

      Some of my best plants and biggest plants are still in the pot and in the ground. But of course you can do it anyway you want I do it both ways. And by leaving it in a pot, it’s very easy to move if you want to put it somewhere else later.

    Apologies. I ordered the 1/2" x 50' irrigation tubing for $4.95 but they sent 1/4" x 50' and the 1/2' is now $9 or $12. I'll keep the 1/4" and check elsewhere for the 1/2" elsewhere. My second tote must have too much household compost because I moved the soil a little and there were awful creatures, not red wigglers. They looked like little off white worm like thigs about an inch long. I just hope they eat, hatch and go away. Do you ever get weird worms?

      Right now I don’t sell any plants, but for tree collard you really want to buy cutting, as tree collard seeds may not grow true. But the plants will still be good from seeds, just many times may not grow the same.
