People want to believe Cornette is just a out of touch grumpy old man and to be honest he can be at times but he’s only grumpy because he CARES about the business probably more than anyone in the business today and hates seeing the state it’s in and not being able to do something about it. He will give someone a lashing for sure but only if he thinks it’s deserved and he doesn’t hesitate to give someone their due if they do something good/great. That’s why I love listening to his podcast

For me Ruthless Aggression was as good as Attitude Era since I was old enough to understand a little more while not too old and critical yet.
HHH, Cena, Orton, Lesnar, RVD, Hardys, Batista, Eddie, Kurt, Taker, Mysterio, Torrie Wilson, Edge, Stacey Kiebler, Rikishi, Trish, JBL, Lita, King Booker(Bookah), and Goldberg finally coming over. Plenty of other names as well including Vince and Shane on screen characters. Teddy Long and those SmackDown tag matches 🤣
Edit : the older and bitter smarks need to take some blame. Y'all pushed for every underrated indy guy to get a chance and helped drive actual superstars and character away. Even now when someone has a potentially over character you want them to be serious.

@Awesome Sauce a 50+ year old boomer Smark? I named more people than Cena and he wasn't super Cena then. Dude was midcarder at the time. And I didn't compare them to anyone besides the Attitude Era and didn't say they were better than Savage or Luger. I'm pretty sure smarks like you were shitting on Lugar and Savage hoping for a Barry Horowitz push.
I actually feel sorry for you grandpa. You've seen the greatest wrestlers ever but now you're old and bitter in YT comments talking about the good ol days. I am glad I missed out on being 50+ in YT complaining that wrestling doesn't give me the kayfabe feeling I had from 40 damn years ago. TNA was also great but topic about WWE Ruthless Aggression.

@Awesome Sauce ah the classic Vince is out of touch defense. Every star wrestling gets smarks try to run away. Cena was certainly a bigger star than Magnum TA. You hated Hogan too I'm sure. Smarks always hate who is popular. You're a 50 year old man or the typical smark who is just rattling off great names to discredit current wrestlers.
Saying 3 of the top 5 greatest wrestling stars (Austin, Hogan, Flair) doesn't take some elite level knowledge and is akin to naming Jordan, Rice, Babe Ruth during a sports topic. It's blatantly obviously none of the people I named are as great as the wrestling mount rushmore. But this is Cornette video so I expect people to not be able to do anything more than say something sucks and bring up unnecessary comparisons just as an excuse to argue and bury something. Imagine being an old ass man calling people kids and being indignant about professional wrestling after admitting it hasn't been popular for over 15 years.

Trouble is, Jim calls out Ciampa and Breakker as exceptions but that's because Ciampa was an indy guy, the type they don't recruit anymore and Breakker is second generation. So there's essentially no hope for the future of their home developed stars because their process can't develop top talent from scratch and few times it does, turns out it wasn't really from scratch.

NXT 2.0 is basically OVW during this period. OVW had indy talent in the company but it was the college athletes that were recruited who were the stars who had the longest careers and the indy talent rarely made a big splash when they did get called up compared to the recruited non pro wrestlers. It's hard for people to see the positive because the OVW years weren't televised nationally to see how the big stars were made to recognize when it's being done right.

WWE owes OVW, Danny Davis, & Jim Cornette a huge amount of debt to them! Without them, we would have been where we are now in wrestling Without stars. They kept the tradition of wrestling alive and created new stars to shine and carry the torch after the attitude Era ended. Since then nobody's has been able to pick up the torch since then. Sure, Roman, Kenny, Offspreay, Okada & a few others are hot rn. But they aren't recognized worldwide like the folks before them. Whether you like or hate him, Cena was the last big star in the wrestling business and nobody's been able to carry the torch since he stop wrestling full time. That's mostly WWE's fault. However the fact that no other company was able to take advantage of that window is proof that there's a lack of stars in today's wrestling. I really hope either WWE, AEW or hell even the NWA really focus on building the next biggest star in wrestling.

Jim talking about Mark Henry and Paul Wight shows the value of having knowledgeable people doing the training and teaching guys the mental as well as the physical. Mark and Show from what I've seen throughout their careers could tell a story in and out of the ring, they both had some of shit Stains influence on some of their storylines and angles, but they got it and became hall of famers because of the basics they learned and it sounds like in Henry's case especially gained a better understanding and appreciation for the business and all the other guys involved in it. Mark seems like a genuinely sincere human being who loves what he does and cares about the people in it. He ain't no mean Gene doing interviews in the back, but in time I think he'll keep getting better. You can tell guys who were trained to respect the business by veterans. Imagine if Keith Lee and Karrion Kross had been brought up through developmental like Cena and Orton were, I think we'd be looking at a much different but better product because of it.

Jim, where were you when I went to Wrestling school? If I could’ve found a school like yours and would’ve known any better to find a school like yours, I would’ve been there in a heartbeat and paid whatever I had to. I ended up going to Jimmy Dio’s dungeon in Reading Pennsylvania and was only ever trained in the ring once by him. Every time I ever showed up after that, it was just me and the random person who would stop by his gym like Mick Foley or Wahoo McDaniel or somebody like that, who would get in the ring and teach me a few things. But other than that, it was essentially me teaching myself the moves… For which I paid $3500 to do so, something I have been learning since I was in high school with some of my buddies on the wrestling mats at lunchtime. For which I didn’t have to spend $3500 for. My friends and I were setting up rings in my yard from the time I was eight or nine years old and that was back in the middle 1980s. So I generally already knew how to take a bump and already knew most of the holds without killing somebody… I just needed somebody like you to teach mom what you were talking about with this broadcast. I was born to be an entertainer, always had that outward likability. In fact, it’s what I ended up doing throughout my life so far is entertaining people. Whether that be in bands or comedy or a random wrestling show that shows up in the area. It’s always been something along the same lines.
Which is irritates me that back then, there was very few ways to know any better and any local wrestling school that was around certainly didn’t want you knowing about anything better. Because they were staring down the barrel of that $3500 per student and not giving a crap whether or not somebody went on to make a career, especially WWF or WWE. Since they were never able to break through themselves. The crazy thing is, the one school I didn’t know about was Chris Adams, when she was running with wahoo… I spoke to both of them on the phone about it before I chose, stupidly, the place in Reading because it was close to me. And I could’ve paid them $5000 and been wrestling in WCCW or WCW. Getting all of the real world experience I need it, as opposed to Wrestling in Hamburg many years after WWF had abandoned the place. Which, by the way it was still a great Wrestling town when I did my matches there. But, obviously I gave you no TV exposure or the know how to take the cameras into account.
Thankfully, people have the resources to check out the viability of the schools before they go to them now. Many more decent trainers out there today who were once a part of WWE. So they know how to teach you the WWE ways, in order to get a better grasp on what to expect if you get a chance to go there.
In any case, I thank you for your extensive knowledge and the fact that you remember all of the stuff so many years after. Foresight you had to write all of this down and keep all of those records, just amazing. Show us your love and commitment to the business. Something very few people have anymore.

I have listened to this whole thing and Jim essentially answered this, but I just still don't understand: how did WWE see 4 mega stars come out of ovw, including 3 possible top 20 all timers and say, well let's switch it up now and be more like the NFL. The answer is ego, but I just don't get it.

    • @jeffnettleton3858

They were too interconnected. Corny could have, on a much smaller scale,; but, it probably would have ended up like Smokey Mountain. The WWE involvement gave them more opportunities for bigger shows, tv, etc and also the odd star come through to help boost attendance, to showcase the trainees, both developmental and home-grown. It worked best when JR was head of talent relations and gave Corny advance notice of when they were bringing guys up, so he could write them out of tv. The problems didn't start occurring until Laurenitis took over and kept yanking people without notice. JR understood what Corny was doing and agreed with his philosophy. Laurenitis was a yes man, who kowtowed to Kevin Dunn. JR kept the balance between "wrestling" and "sports entertainment," as much as anyone could.

He’s one of the few guys that were truly home grown WWE talent. Most the other guys, like Seth Rollins & KO, were already doing their thing before WWE, they just cleaned em up to fit their product better. Bray/Windham created something truly special.

Yo Yo yo Cornette! My Man! I think I got a great idea for Wrestlemania this year! Of course it involves you having a match with Russo in a street fight. Here is my idea, please consider- On Raw they video you visiting the grave of Bobby Eaton when all of a suddent Vince Russo, his two sons, and Scott Steiner roll in on a truck. And Steiner hits you with a pipe and puts you in the Steiner Recliner. Russo then says "Cornette, either you admit wrestling is fake right now to the cameras or my two boys are going to relieve themselves on Beautiful Bobby's grave! "NEVER!!!!" Is your retort. "Let him have it boys- (his sons then begin urinating while you shriek out NO!"). Eventually you pass out to the pain of the Steiner Recliner. The next week on Raw Russo does an in ring interview gloating about making you pass out. You storm out to attack when out of knowhere Rikishi hits you with a samoan drop on the ramp. Steiner and Rikishi then drag you to the ring where you receive 3 or 4 Banzai drops. Steiner then positions you in the corner and holds your arms down while Rikishi gets in position for a stink face. Russo demands "Admit wrestling is fake right now in front of all these people are yor getting the worst stink face ever." You mumble (because of the internal injuries) no. Rikishi proceeds to really lay it in there. ( You then stay off Raw for 3 weeks nursing the injuries). But demand a match at Wrestlemania in a cage! (to keep Steiner the boys and Rikishi out). At Wrestlemania the cage is lowered and it is just you two. When all of a sudden, one of the cameramen puts the camera down and takes off a fake wig and mustashe to reveal himself to be Stan Lane. Stane lane then stands by you and pats you on the back like he is on your side. He then low blows you and yells "SWERVE" into the mic. He then pulls out a poster that reads "Midnight Express". Russo gets on the mic and says "admit wrestling is fake or Sweet Stane is going to burn this poster." You say never again. And the poster is burned and spat on. Finally, Vince McMahon comes out to the ring and says "Thats enough of the foolishness- I demand a strete fight now!" And while Russo is pleading with McMahon on the ropes to not have it happen, you sneak up from behind and school boy him for the 1 2 3. As the referee is raising your hand a banner is lowered that reads "Wrestling is Real You Dumb Republican" as the credits begin to roll. I hope yu like the idea and consider it for your comeback- if not that is okay too! Just keep rocking these great interviews man! DIG IT!
