- It's no secret that grouper are one of the most popular fish to catch (for their amazing strength and ability to always keep you guessing as they dart under structure), and they are also one of the most popular fish to eat (if you don't like a good grouper sandwich, then you probably don't like seafood...)

But one thing I have noticed way to many anglers doing (including myself for many years) is making a grouper rig in a way that is not exactly conservation and money friendly.
What do I mean?
Check out the video to see why leaving the weight tied down on the leader could not only cost you money in tackle, but could easily kill the grouper.
The "old way" of tying grouper rigs with a contained weight is not the most effective or safe way to catch grouper.
Also, stick around until the end of the video as I show a few more tips on the best fishing knots for a grouper rig, and how to tie down your rig while running back to the docks.

Good video as always. Without a swivel in a bottom rig, you will eventually get line twist regardless of how you hook your bait.
Hell yeah. Been looking for a way to remove the barrel swivel from the equation. Been running a fish finder but with the weight on a 8’ piece of fluro so I didn’t have to run a swivel (I hate terminal tackle
Glad it helped!
love the song
Hey salt strong. I've always wanted to catch a goliath grouper but never had the money for the gear. I've lost a few on my heaviest tackle. Can you make a video on how to make a handline? I'm sure thousands of people want to know because there isn't a video on that, and handlining is pretty popular.
+HookedOnTheBay I have not yet gone after goliaths via handline, but I have it on my to do list and will be sure to show everyone how the rig is made once I catch some.
Can i use this on basic carolina rig?
+VJTrey1 I've never tried it for a carolina rig, but this same rigging style should work for it too. Please keep us posted to your results if you give it a shot.
Fish On!
VJ, I use the Carolina Rig for grouper and it works fine for me. Ive occasionally had break offs from lucky grouper making back to cover due to a loose drag, but it always manages to break between the the swivel and hook. The bead helps the knot stay strong on the weights side. Hope this helps.
Salt strong baby.
+Jason Soloman Great to hear from you Jason! I hope all is going great with your business.
Ok,so what if the grouper is fighting back, does that mean the knot on the hook may break and cost me the fish ?
Great question! Make sure to ask this over on the actual blog or in the Community (www.saltstrong.com/) where the coaches spend their time. The blog can be found here: www.saltstrong.com/articles/how-to-make-a-grouper-rig/
Can't see anything..
You shouldn't put the hook through the eye. It can grove out the eye which will fray your line. The hook should go on the outside of the guide.
Good info thanks
Wear a dark shirt next time.
