Great tutorial, brother! From my experience, using a drop-shot rig (used in bass fishing) is highly effective for mangrove. I don’t understand why but they move right in and hammer the shrimp-almost without thought using a size #1 gamakatsu octopus hook....another trick I use is I take a pair of tweezers and blind the shrimp by crushing the eyes in order to keep them from jumping so much....
Im heading out to Savusavu in Fiji to Salt lake lodge to get some mangrove snappers soon. Great work on setting up this video! Very interesting behavior!!
WOW! Amazing! I love how you explain fishing in a scientific and logical manner. I joined the membership just now, I am new to fishing but it's my obsession now. We caught two mangrove snappers inshore fishing yesterday in Venice FL and they were delicious. We had a lot of bites on live shrimp but only reeled in two, the rest didn't get hooked. Maybe my hook is too big? I am going through your videos to figure out what I did wrong lol. Watching your videos is better than going to the movies and almost as good as actually going fishing!!!
Thanks so much for making time to leave the nice comment Jessica! Yes, going down to a smaller hook will likely result in catching more fish when you're in a spot that has a lot of bait stealers (almost always small fish).
Glad you enjoyed this video! Here's one we did showing seatrout striking a paddletail lure in case you haven't seen it yet: www.saltstrong.com/articles/underwater-paddletail-lure-footage/
I love these kinds of videos. So many claims about different lures, etc. and there’s never any video showing you how fish interact with different techniques.
Dude what an awesome idea for a fishing video. Clear footage. Great lesson. One of the best channels out there especially for us tampa bay fishermen that love to check mangrove snappers. Please do more of these type of videos!!!
This was actually a great video never knew what shrimp do underneath the water. Obviously if you didn’t have a weight on it it would move more freely correct? Love these types of videos keep them coming thank you very much!
I go to a spot in Sarasota Bay on a bridge. I limit out every time I go and I can feel the other snapper bouncing off my leader when they go into a frenzy. Every single cast on half a shrimp every time. Also, MONSTER sheepshead are n the same spot. Incoming tide only. Got 4 to 6 hours of a fire bite EVERY time. You can actually see the fish schooled up with 24 inch sheepers everywhere. Hint? Bird Key.

Really really cool. A shrimp under a popping cork with a red or trout bite would be incredible. Next to impossible to capture I’m sure but phenomenal nonetheless. Great video.
Yes, that would be cool! I'll definitely be trying to get some redfish strike footage. Here's some fun footage showing seatrout striking a lure underwater in case you haven't seen it yet: www.saltstrong.com/articles/underwater-paddletail-lure-footage/
Glad you enjoyed it! Here's some cool underwater footage of seatrout striking a lure that we published a month or two ago in case you haven't yet seen it: www.saltstrong.com/articles/underwater-paddletail-lure-footage/
Now I know why they have such explosive strike, some anglers here who left their rods unattended actually lost their fishing tackle when bait fishing for this fish.
These fish always sneak on lures and burst away real quick , and if u guys are using live shrimps , make sure u hook on head instead of tail as it always grabs on the head first . I've spent last 3 years hunting for mangrove jack / snapper , it never fails to impress me , until to this day , regardless of their any size , it's always challenging , they grab the lure and runs quick into their covers , it's pain in the ass when you're fishing in snaggy areas
I rigged the shrimp from under the horn which is one of the most popular ways to rig them. Here's a video showing it in action: www.saltstrong.com/articles/how-to-catch-fish-with-live-shrimp-in-shallow-water/
I was surf fishing recently at 6am and saw schools of fish swimming and circling an area and jumping probably feeding on flies on the water surface. I tried to get a bite using top water poppers and semi sinking lures but they didn’t go for them. I tried for two hours different color lures but didn’t caught any. Was i doing something wrong? I’m new to fishing and I want to use lures most of the time over dead and live bait. I used 1.5 oz lures. Is it that some days the fish would be interested in targeting lures or something like that ? Is there a specific time period to fish with lures ?
Behavior is different from there age time of day location and tide the 20+ inches only bite in the Am at night from my experience.. at least from miami down to the keys. They love thread herring cut in half tossed deep in the mangroves need to use really thick line cool vid dude 👍
now that surely tells the story..our rods were always sent flying into the water bfore we even had any chance to react properly..its just utter silence and then boom, the bite came..nasty bites these snappers

Looks like your live shrimp aren't really "live". Try tail hooking the shrimp in the 2nd last segmentation of its body. This will allow the shrimp to pulsate in a backwards motion as it would normally when responding to predators. You have simply anchored your shrimp to the bottom, this is no better than a fresh dead shrimp bait.
The shrimp was anchored to the bottom so that they wouldn't kick out of view (we do not recommend that for normal fishing). Yes, rigging a shrimp from the tail works great too.
Tail rigging the live shrimp for mangrove snapper tends to lose the strike a lot as it always hit on the head first , unless you're doing double hook setup for it , I always hook on the tail and leave the other hook unattended , the main purpose for the other hook was to make sure i dont miss the bite on the head , too . I dont like to rig on the head as it dies off real quick after several casts

If Sheepshead are scared of GoPros maybe you could cover up the GoPro emblem or use a different brand name that sheeps that aren't familiar with.
Bait🤪
Haha!
Doondah , not the best , but it’s pretty good!
My HERO 3 has a blue light that blinks, maybe black nail polish over the light?
That’s awesome Luke. Gives me a better idea of how to fish my artificial shrimp as well.
Do the snappers usually go for that?
dead bait vs live bait would be interesting
Wow, what a great job you did of getting that footage and then breaking it down. Love your vids and the club. Not to mention Smart Spots.
Glad you enjoyed it

Nice video! I grew up watching fish in my 50 gallon aquarium. Brought back memories.
How cool! I've always wanted a saltwater aquarium with my favorite inshore fish in there.

Glad you enjoyed this video! Here's a fun one of seatrout striking a lure underwater... very cool to see how they come up to eat it.

Hello sir.🤗 What is ta best time or lowtide or high tide for mangrovesnopper?
It really depends on the specific area. There are a lot of factors.

Very informative video.

That looks like a vortex in front of the snappers mouth when he eats the shrimp.
Great fish drama. I'm entertained.

This is good to know because I wonder how my shrimp disappear so quickly!! These fish aren’t as easy to catch as people think!!!
Thanks for watching!
Great video. Great footage. How did you rig the bait? Like the bridge video removing the tail?
I rigged the shrimp from under the horn which is one of the most popular ways to rig them. Here's a video showing it in action: www.saltstrong.com/articles/how-to-catch-fish-with-live-shrimp-in-shallow-water/

Have u tried soft plastics ? 3 to 4 inch might works , depending on what you're trying to catch

I would love to see what happens when a mango hits a pilchard.
Same here!
@ACF you mean FISH?
What I would like to see is how that Mangrove spits the hook out and attaches it to a rock :)
Wouldn't we all!

Mick L depends how big the fish is I guess but you can always place the hook higher up the body
