Visited the Victory many years ago, a lady asked the gentleman guide “ Are they English cannonballs? “ the guide “ No they are modern copies, the French have all our original ones!” 😂
I was an MOD Photographer and photographed one of your senior Admirals being hosted by our First Sea Lord in Nelson’s cabin on HMS Victory on Trafalgar night, this seasoned old Admiral was almost overwhelmed by the honour, we know how to put on a hood show for our military friends
During the Falklands a cartoon was published with two sailors in a pub - one was saying "They're thinking of bringing out Bulwark, what next?" and out of the window a tug is pulling HMS Victory.
There are a lot of channels of Americans reviewing and/or visiting the UK, and its normally very positive, which of course is great. But many of them, not intentionally I am sure, can come over a bit condescending and gushy. Not once have I ever seen a video where you do that. You seem to appreciate us, but it also is a very clear eyed, honest and respectful viewpoint that you take. From a UK point of view, its that approach as well as your genuine interest and research, which makes your channel so great. I, and I am sure many of us, really appreciate that, so thank you.
I was at a formal mess dinner night on Victory back in December, it was an amazing night. We also got an after hours guided tour. I'm Army myself so it was brilliant to experience the Navy traditions. Food was on point too! As was the Pussers Rum...
HMS Warrior holds a very special place in the hearts of me and my wife, as we got married on board Warrior back in 2015. We will never forget it. Best day of our lives so far, gotta be said. I hope you all enjoyed yourselves and hope you continue to do so for the rest of your stay here.
When you pointed out the hovercraft I was screaming, do it! It's the last in the world in commercial service. Glad you said see next video. I also hope you went to the d-day museum my grandparents took me there when it opened. As a 14 year old at the time, seeing my grandparents relating to everything made it less of a sterile museum and more of a record of what they'd lived through. Grandma humming along to the songs of the time that they played, I'll never forget that.
Glad youre having a good time in the UK. My family was at the doickyard last month. The dockyard is lovely, we ended up going back and doing the things we missed on the first day. The Mary Rose was fantastic.
Sounds like you're not having a good time over here. Pity a few things have gone wrong for you. I hope you take some good memories back with you. Thank you for coming to visit as in the UK 🇬🇧♥️🇺🇲
The D36 designated destroyer is HMS Defender. When HMS Daring D32 first came to Portsmouth before entering service, I was lucky enough to be able to go on the ship and have a look around as they let the public on to show off the Royal Navy's new ship at the time.
My grandfather worked/served on HMS Warrior during WW2, as it was serving as a floating refueling jetty in Pembroke dock, and he was flying as aircrew on Sunderland flying boats which sometimes refueled from her.
Your son doing the signalling in his hard hat was just too cute! I visited the victory in the early nineties, and at the time they renovating the ship, which meant they had to replace some of the wood! The old wood was sold in the shop so I bought a piece! I still have it, some of my friends don't get why I'd want It, but I just love owning pieces of history! Also, did you see the spot where Nelson died?
I've never seen anyone who's kids look more like them. Seriously you could blend you two guys' faces on photoshop or whatever and both the kids would look exactly like you. Cool. I love your backpack too. It makes you look like a kid on a school trip. Brilliant.
The Royal Navy memorial is at Southsea. There are 25,000 names of fatalities on it, 10,000 from WW1 and 15,000 from WW2. My fathers brother is on it, killed battle of Jutland 31 May 1916
I am loving the kids, they don't realise it yet but the memories are immortalised and will be used to show their spouses and grandkids in the future. Thanks for sharing with us.
My father took me as a child to to see HMS Victory way back in the 70s. It looks like there are a lot more fun things to see at Portsmouth now. It was delightful seeing the video of you and your family there.
@desperate need of scotch it's also a case of abducted sailors not really being keen on taking orders from people who took them away and forced them into a high mortality life at sea. Brutality was one way to get them moving.
The other side the bay there, from Portsmouth, is Gosport. At the Head of that side of the bay/port is Haslar, former royal naval hospital, next to that the submarine museum which has a diesel sub to access and walk around. And there're the forts out in front of the bay (in the solent) Spit bank & Spit head etc, the napolionic forts built to protect the port. There're a good few historic sites around there to be sure. Almost all accessable. And at Stokes Bay, Gosport side, theres plenty of WWII Relatrd artifacts left by the beach there. Its all rather interesting. And yes, I happen to be a local ;) Hope you all enjoyed yourselves.
Yeah, you are going somewhere I know. I first ever met Americans and had my first fudge brownie at Portsmouth dockyard. It was on the USS Nassau and pretty extravagant for 1982. That’s also where I went to watch the ships load up to go to the Falklands crisis. I’ll keep watching for a glimpse of the Isle of Wight.
This reminds me of so many of my childhood holidays. Those ladders. The cannons. The little shop. The navy salute the deck (they hide their dirty tar covered palms).
At 17:48, the area behind and to the left of the marina is the former HMS Dolphin. This used to be the RN submarine school and houses the submarine service museum.
If you want to get really close and personal with a seagull, just go and try to eat some fish and chips outside, they will come and say hi.... and bye as they fly away with your food!
Nice to see you visiting Pompey , lots to see in the yard and a pity you didn't manage the Mary Rose but I hope you enjoyed it . The weather hasn't really warmed up yet which is a bit of a shame .
Fun fact, my earliest childhood memory was before I was 2, probably remember parts of every holiday from the age of 4. One day your children will really appreciate this! I feel embarrassed to say I’ve never visited HMS Victory or Mary Rose. We are pretty lazy here in the the U.K - every destination over 2 hours away is considered a long drive!
I think it’s more the fact that a 2 hour drive in the UK is like a 5 hour drive in the US...here in the UK in 2 hours you will have driven past 5 million people towns villages and a few thousand vehicles...in the US or Australia for instance which I’ve done a lot of driving in,you might only see a few cars in that time and maybe not even have had to make turn..🤷♂️
fun fact, you're on hms victory, the company that made the guns for the ship many many years ago (called Carron) was still in existence up until 2019 (though at that point they didnt make guns, more household items) only shut down due to those who bought it over moving production to a site in slovakia and shutting its scottish operation, all that remains today is a small distribution centre.
Omg.. I been watching for years. Never thought I see you in place I use to live. And use to go every day. Dock yard was my second home So where the destroyer was, the Dock near that I use to do stuff every Friday and Tuesday
Been following you for about three years and realised you must have walked right past my front door today. When you visited London a while back I remember suggesting Portsmouth to you. There is a nice sandy beach in Ryde on the Isle of Wight, it about a 10 minute walk from the hovercraft terminal.
I was in that hotel end of March for few days(good mini muffins for breakfast and an annoying lift that took a while to figure out ref keycard), seen family across the water in Gosport. Portsmouth sea front and Southsea are great to visit but the rest of the city is pretty sad looking. Best option is a Summer visit with a trip across to IOW and day trips to Winchester or Bournemouth by train.
I'm from there so slightly bias but Hampshire on the whole is a really underrated touristy county, Glad to see someone took advantage :) , There is a D-Day Museum that is along the sea front not far from where the hovercraft launches from that is well worth a visit as is Fort Nelson on top of Portsdown hill
HMS ALLIANCE and the submarine museum was on the other side of the harbour in Gosport. You can get via a water bus in the historic dockyard Also in a different part of gosport is a Museum for the history of naval weapons
I live just north of Pompey. There's a lot to see in the area. We had friends over from the US last year for a week, we were unable to take them to see everything.
Love the channel man! Fun fact, my younger brother was born in Portsmouth, as was my Grandad. I used to live there when I was a kid from 2003-2006 and I am planning on going back there again sometime soon
Just wanna say im a massive fan of your channel. You've done the uk justice witu your visit and I loce the gaming soundtracks especially the runescape soundtracks lol! The cat-o-nine tails whip, used for disciplining errant sailors. Brutal 😢
It's hard to fathom why it was so, but impressed sailors explain a part of it. Still, The French did their Galley slave thing, so it wasn't that bad.
@@Viljuri It was a different time then I guess. But discipline on a ship is paramount. The captain’s knew this.
