if everything we got in updates was in the base game but we got no updates would that be better? try to be more realistic, mf just complained about every single weapon returning in the base game and wanted them in updates instead, in splatoon 2 everyone complained about old weapons returning in updates, make your fucking mind up
@@twoloavesofbreadthats forgivable for s1 cause it was the first and no one had a wiiu. It was forgivable for s2 cause this was most of the player bases first game. S3 has no excuse lacking content on an established, popular IP on an established popular console
21:38 "The coolest thing about Side Order was the concept art they put in the trailer." TRUEEE. Those early art pieces were so evocative, they really pulled you in and got you excited for what you hoped was a deeper story. Sadly, it really was just an epilogue to Octo Expansion. Don't get me wrong, it was certainly a good idea to try to give closure to all those Octolings who got sanitized in the past and help them heal - lovely concept. But other than that, very little actual story content.
By those concept arts I thought the DLC was gonna be a personal story to Agent 8 with how they deal with trauma not only because of the OE ending but also by the amnesia that they suffer. I thought it was gonna be a self-discovery story with dark themes while Agent 8 overcomes their fears and stops thinking about the past at the end. We could have played this DLC with any other agent and it wouldn't make a difference 😢
The GrandFest made me realize that I would DIE for Deep Cut. And for Off The Hook. And for the Squid Sisters. And for Acht. And for DJ Octavio. And for the Callie plush that drinks all your Pepsi and calls you a b*tch. Edit: and for Small Fry
One of the issues I have with Splatfests in 3 is the way the series has been trying to force every single aspect of the game to become more serious and competitive over time, giving less and less room for casual players to just play the game without caring about how well they’re actually playing or improving-even turf feels way more serious now than back in S1. In that regard, Splatfests in S3 feel to me like a remnant of S1’s far more carefree, less serious and more casual nature, where it was best enjoyed if you were just playing as wackily and goofily as the gameplay naturally suggests it should be. Turf war has only really been a good mode in S1; I’ve seen several people who started with S2 or S3 and don’t like the mode, suddenly “get it” when they played it in S1 for the first time. S3’s maps (where you can do literally nothing but fight the enemy 24/7 even when you don’t have the resources to), matchmaking (my goal in the game is to have silly goofy fun, I should NEVER be matched with top-500 players who play like their lives are on the line), TERRIBLE locking of its only new (and most fun!) gamemodes behind schedules that are SO bad that they don’t even make me want to keep track and open the game for them anymore, and the painfully slow wait for new content that wasn’t even that good most of the time (we already had a buffed Nova in 1 it was called Dual Squelcher), all make S3 feel like the single most “hostile to casual play” entry in the series. Including Splatfests is just a thing they kinda HAVE to do now though because it’s such a big part of the series, but the game feels like it’s doing a really poor job at remembering whom those fests were supposed to be for in the first place.
I never got the chance of playing online (same goes for one and two) but from what I have seen in RUclips I absolutely get it. Back when I was only 12 and discovered Splatoon I thought specifically turf war was the coolest gameplay of any video game ever (damn, do I feel old) and it looked alright in S2, but when I watched Turf War matches in 3 (I was like 14 or 15 at the time) it looked so unfun in comparison. I thought it was just a me thing cause I couldn't really find a reason of why I felt that, but I think you summed it up pretty well
@@theotherjared9824 It's an average game. You can still like it, but you can't deny that almost every positive thing about it has something holding it back from being an excellent game.

I feel like s3 just had a lot of missed potential. Like it’s barely enough to be a proper sequel to s2 but it could’ve been infinitely more. It’s a game that frustrates me because of it’s missed potential.
I blame the maps. Nintendo hired beginner map designers for Splatoon back in 2022, they're not integrated into the surroundings, AND they barely utilize the new features that were introduced.
@@coldfanta4963 True that. But also some content was scrapped. Like new modes for regular battles and salmon. They're most likely saving it for S4. Which is kinda sad cause like the other comment said "S3 is barely enough to be a proper sequel to the second game" and they're right. S3 is just S2.9 (like an expansion of an expansion) with revamps of modes and BAD revamps of older maps. They couldn't even get the game to have 3rd kits even though S3 loves the number 3.
@@FreshFalcon splatoon 3 lacks identity. Very few features in splatoon 3 even the new ones (aside from s order) will be looked back on and seen as "yup this was created in splatoon 3"
Fell off of Splatoon 3 pretty hard unfortunately. The main thing is that I am ABSOLUTELY TRASH at Splatoon and the general grind for leveling up, getting properly geared up took forever (is it a hot take to say I hate the gear system in Splatoon?) and getting drip-fed rewards from the catalogue all just made playing the game feel so much more like a chore compared to the first two games which already had that same issue before only. So I'd just get stomped repeatedly while making meager progress towards rewards. It seriously burned me out and eventually I really only booted the game up for Splatfests, I didn't even try Big Run when it was available lol. It's probably my own fault, my internet isn't ideal, I only really played turf war, and my scrubby attitude towards the game didn't help at all but I just really didn't enjoy myself much at all in the last couple sessions that I played (including the final Splatfest) so I might just be straight up done with Splatoon, at least for the foreseeable future. IDK maybe they could save it if they just buff the nova shot.
Great video Mr. Spaceman. A lot of the issues you talked about in this video really represent my reasons for falling off this game way quicker than I did with Splatoon 2, even though I liked this game way more than Splatoon 2, funny how that works. Also everyone describing the Grand Festival as the best thing ever makes me so sad because I missed it since I was busy that weekend. :((
While I don't want tricolor to return, I think ultra signals should become a regular in splatfests alongside fizzbangs. It would really do a to make splatfests feel special alongside addressing the whole "losing in the last minute" problem which haunts turf war.
big run having predetermined goals is absolutely a good change, the constant anxiety of being just one egg off was awful, so not knowing and it being arbitruary and still unknown would still be awdul still, they absoluterly made the right decision
Yeah. When horrorboros dropped, I was grinding out matches with a team until the very end, and we went through hell...only to find out we were 2 eggs away from the gold threshold when the results dropped :-/ Very much felt like getting smacked by a curve that Overfishers set until Splat3 started listing the thresholds outright.
Very true! I was extremely pissed when I missed the gold threshold by like 1-10 eggs in the first big run, so much that I kind of just dropped the game completely and never picked it up again until grand fest lol
@@gengarfluid overfishers don't affect the general curve, they're vastly VASTLY outnumbered by normal players... it's like saying top players determine the splatfest winners... they're mathematically insignificant. It's the slightly above average players that affect the curve the most
@@sasukeissocoollikeIt's not even that, the system in itself was flawed. The prize system required atleast half of the playerbase that participated in the event to do worse than you in order for you to receive a prize. It's the same reason why Splatfests are so toxic. Even with an even vote participation, 66.6% of the playerbase that participated will lose each time. When systems like these are created and unchecked, unintentionally or not, a disappointed or toxic community is to be expected.
I also like the threshold because once you get where you want you can just stop. even though Big Run is over the weekend I don't think most people have the time to grind it out, so knowing how much the effort you put in so far will get you is great

ngl I feel bad for missing the entirety of spla3 active development, I bought the game in late 2022 on time to the first splatfest, playing for 10 hours and not touching it for 2 whole years, ngl I'm a bit sad
Same. I was on a break from Splatoon 2 and thought 3 would bring me back, but after a short while I just fell off again. Then suddenly 2 years passed and there is a final fest going on.
Don't feel bad lol I got the game on launch, maxed out the catalog for the first season and dropped it until final fest basically. Game disappointed the shit out of me. This is the conclusion to the main trilogy of splatoon games? Genuinely insulting imo, even if the main gameplay is splatoon at its best the things revolving AROUND said gameplay are the series at its worst.
Yall didn't miss much tbh 😅 the maps, the stages you most likely would've played on for the majority of the time in S3, are cramped and unbalanced (map designs favor long-range weapons such as in mincemeat and crableg), matchmaking is unbalanced (especially in Turf War), salmon run's reward system is egregious and way too grindy, side order's story is short and hollow with repetitive/redundant gameplay with lack of strong incentive.........yeah. I think you dodged a bullet. From personal experience, it's a very frustrating game to play because of its foundational issues, issues that have barely been properly addressed in its life cycle.
Bought on launch as my first splatoon game, had great fun. First season came out, it was all good. Second season i played ranked, made it to S rank with aero spray, went insane, became toxic(I've never played a pvp shooter before), bit my switch in two due to the m a d n e s s, started liking pearl because i found out she said that "charger mains should use a real weapon"(which should say enough about how i feel about them), and stopped playing Ranked because I stopped having fun, but these aren't even the main reasons i quit. The maps... I got tired of every map being a tetris block. There really isn't anything i can say. Saw the trailer for one of the last seasons, saw a map shaped like a tetris Z, and closed the video.
I’m absolutely certain a big part of why Future got zero points is because they got shafted in their own game. Sidelined in their own game’s story mode to put more Squid Sisters was such a bad move. And since Squid Sisters just won the final fest, it’s safe to say I don’t see Deep Cut ever returning. The Squid Sisters will probably take up most of Splatoon 4’s story mode too, overshadowing whatever idols that game will have as well. A very very unfortunate fate for what could’ve been another great idol group Buff the Splattershot Nova
They may return. I mean they're team future and the future is S4. I get what you mean though. This game should've been atleast 3 years on dev work, made a wave 3 surrounding Deep cut, OR should've had more time with them during the story (have the squid sisters less time. Just switch amount of time is what I mean)
@@plasma263 I think they're saying that regardless of who won, Splatoon 4 is literally in the future. People keep assuming the final fest definitely means the next game takes place in the past, but... we don't know that? The final fest in Splatoon 1 only affected the story mode. Splatoon 2's final fest affected the setting of Splatoon 3 but not the main story mode, really... Maybe only the story mode of S4 takes place in the past. Maybe Past winning means the next game takes place in Inkopolis as its main setting. None of these suggest that Deep Cut won't ever return when they can still appear in the mainline story or dlc
@@sasukeissocoollikenintendo said this was the end of the main trilogy and splatoon 4 will be something new, so no, no more deep cut unless it's cameos and eastereggs :') And if the game doesn't actually take place in the past then maybe descendants
@@Honeybunny_bun Source? The most they said was that ROTM "was the end of this splat-tastic saga!" which for all we know could just be the end of the Inklings vs. Octarians plotline? Like, it's WAY too vague to make any actual concrete assumptions yet. Also, the Splatoon series time-wise progresses at the same rate as the real world (2 years passing for us is the same as 2 years passing for them in-universe), so I seriously doubt it's going to go back to the past, maybe doing that descendants thing like you mentioned.
I feel like the Deep cut problem wasn't a problem with the news being skipable but the fact that both the story modes didn't focus on them at all and instead focused on characters that were already developed which gave them no time for players to see any sort of relationship between the three unless it was in the most inconvenient part of the game (the news I can skip since I'm gonna see the stages in rotation before the match anyways). I dont think side order needs to chage to incorporate them really but if I was to redo the story mode i would have them be helping the squid beak splatoon. Give them an opportunity to Interact with established characters and the player. Maybe for certain segments of the levels and bosses let you use there powers and give context to their origins since its where there powers come from and for the purpose of placing them more naturally into the story and world we already know.
After two years, it’s clear that EPD 5 should've supported Animal Crossing: New Horizons for longer & save Splatoon 3 for the Switch 2's first year (especially when the system was supposedly delayed to next year due to a lack of software). Not that I hate Splatoon 3, but it never truly lived up to its potential......nor did they buff the Nova Shot. The game clearly needed more time in the oven to think through certain aspects of the game, namely the level & kit design.
The slow rollout of updates really ruined the maps for me it took way too long for them to add a roster of maps that weren't long hallways or for them to fix/adjust those long hallway maps. I had already spent most of my time with the game fighting uphill battles against chargers and splatlings by the time they fixed things. It just simply was not fun to play and I ended up dreading having to get on to grind my catalog and ranked. P.S I also was one of five novashot users I do wish they had buffed it at some point.
I loved the hell out of Splatoon 1 and 2, but when I got 3, I was just so underwhelmed and frustrated with the boring map design, and piss poor match making. After losing way more matches than I was winning (as a B+ player usually) I just, never picked up the game again. There was a period where I wanted to get all of the cool stuff from the catalogues, but once I found out just how much time you need to sink into this game, I just never bothered.
2:00 shoutout to when they spent 10 seconds showing this feature in the trailer instead of showing any of the locker or splashtag decorations 6:00 comp has a rule where you can opt out of screen at least
Despite not always being super popular, Deep Cut will always be my favorite idol group. Maybe it’s because they’re a trio or because of their unique personalities, but their music and vibes always made me smile. 🦑❤️😊
Splatoon 3 had so much missed potential that everyone noticed it even little timmy. Big runs felt more special than splatfests since everything it came around something new was getting added to the mode while splatfests only added something truly new in the grand festival. Splatoon 2 has a gap on the other splatoons on splatfests.
Failed entirely in the customization and kits aspect, though I don't care about kits because I'm a casual player I can understand why some people would want them. It feels forcefully competitive and it seems that's the only thing it has going for itself if you're a competitive player, everything else has seemingly gone the wind...
The customization is great wym? A lot of gear, you can make unique characters with all the skin tones, eye color and eyebrows, th addition of lockers and splash tags are great. The only thing I think we need is more hairstyles and pants options.
@@BigPro1123 Yes more legwear and hairstyles is what I'm truly waiting for. The customization is not that good imo because a lot of the shirts don't look good with the black training shorts/pants or even the sweat pants. It would look a lot better and natural with actual jeans skirts maybe even dresses ect
Yea most of the kits in this game have some dysfunctional, shitty/toxic, or just unfun gameplans, wish there was some real variety Edit: yeah also leg wear feels hyper not well rounded enough, it leans too far into sporty clothing
@@Aloratoolush there's a crap ton of formal wear but unfortunately no dressy slacks or socks to go with said formal wear, same sorta deal with the t shirts, a lot of them feel drab without maybaps some jeans, maybe belts and stuff, like idk maybe I want to wear a tshirt but make it stand out more by wearing more belts than sol badguy from guilty gear or something.....well you get the point lmfao. Here's to hoping sploon 4 will really lock in with the options Have a good day as well :)
The update cycle really makes me wonder if this was meant to be a sacrificial title in the series, like a way to temper expectations for the next game while making the wait for the next title more bearable. Makes sense if they’re trying hard to jump ship and make 4 far better than 3 ever could be.
I assumed that the Splatter Color Screen would be like a one way mirror but when I saw that it blocks everyone's vision I was shocked. Like how does that help anyone? It's literally a handicap. Thermal Vision should have at least been considered. I don't use Social Media so being unable to post anything in Splatoon because I didn't have TWITTER felt stupid and made me a little annoyed. This change is honestly welcome in my book. Also it keeps kids off of Twitter, which as you mentioned has turned into a toxic pool of garbage (I'm assuming from what you and others have mentioned, I've never had Twitter lol) Lastly, BUFF SUPER CHUMPS!! And the nova shot
The things about splatoon 3 is that I feel the devs had a lot of ideas on how they wanted the game to be but it just feels like there was just a lot of missed potential. I feel like they wanted to do certain things in the game but then mysteriously dropped them for some reason (probably time constraints). I don’t dislike the game but I wish they did a lot more with what they had.
i agree with most of your points but 8 person salmon run would have the switch blow up in your hand it can barely handle four people with the amount of salmon you fight 😭
I made a whole ass video talking about all my grievances with the game (let alone all the things the game doesn't do well) and I can summarize it here because it's on a whole ass different language and I don't expect you to watch it anyway lmfao The biggest mistake in this game is the matchmaking. Without a doubt. Like you said: We can't expect anyone to make a perfect ranked system, but holy fucking shit, bro. How do they actually DOWNGRADE from what we had before? There was absolutely nothing wrong with S2's ranked system and matchmaking. If glicko2 was a thing AT ALL in S3, then it sure didn't make itself noticed, because in Open you can get literally anyone queueing up at the same time as you do from any rank, regardless of where anyone is, making for some of the most atrocious lobbies I've ever seen and Series is just so lenient with making people go up in rank that the majority of the playerbase is in A, S or S+ with S+ being way too big for no real reason and having the biggest skill gap between the worst player and best player. What was wrong with the system in S2? Nothing much... except it was hard to go up in rank, and that's not something you want for player retention, because people will feel like they're in ELO hell and drop the game. So they go and flip to the other extreme, where everyone goes up and now they're stuck somewhere they shouldn't be. Like, really? Removing deranks from losing? Who the fuck thought that was a good idea? Maps were trash, new movement mechanics were shafted because of the maps, kit balance was all over the place, game STILL is too special focused, some weapons feel like absolute garbage to play, splatfests suck and tricolor maps just weren't a nice draw compared to shifty stations, some subs feel like garbage and are left like garbage for NO real reason (toxic mist could easily be buffed and they just don't want to), most gear abilities are outright useless, too much cheesing, too little counterplay a lot of times... literally missed potential: The game. An iterative game like this has no excuses in undoing the good past iterations did for no real reason. Don't buff the nova. Just make a whole new weapon. That shit goes straight to the trash.
I feel like this game is not only the definition of "missed potential", but also of "overly ambitious". This game just had too many new ideas that are mid at best and underwhelming at worst. To be honest if the game was the same as how it was at launch I would have been perfectly fine with that, cause now it is stressing with the many time limited edition modes and each individual ranking system that are GARBAGE. It already felt like a completed game at launch minus a few missing features from S2 so adding all of the previous stuff in the previous games is just too much.
Due to this video I learned that Zach Scott, the first RUclipsr I was a fan of and basically raised me as a wholesome and family friendly let’s player is now posting some down horrendous tweets on SPLATOON CHARACTERS and ELEPHANT DAISY.
@@phoenixmorphix I would been like 6 or something at the time and I saw my sister watching his captain toad let’s play. Even though it wasn’t even that entertaining I just thought “I NEED to watch this” Zach Scott is probably a part of why I got into gaming in general.
@@mps64 Scorch Gorge is god awful on Tower Control, I almost always get spawn camped and the third checkpoint is way too close to the end goal. This map alone makes the mode unplayable on certain rotations.
I was so confused when people (and even some squad mates) gassed up splatoon 3 so much back at launch, when it didn't seem to have much distinct from splatoon 2. I wonder what they're thinking now. I'm also confused what people saw and expected back then.
I 5-starred the vanilla undercover (surprisingly fun, I'm shocked too) and I'd sell my soul for viable buffs. Brellas are shotguns, let the whole class be lethal at point blank, like the tenta brella. And buff the nova shot!
To this day it still blows my mind that the chill season 2023 trailer showed off screen and not splashdown. Like genuinely, wtf were they thinking? Even ignoring all of screen's issues, why on earth did they show off this weird new special and not the incredibly hype returning one? Did they think it putting it in the trailer would get more people to like it? Cause obviously it didn't, lol. There's many things about splatoon that confuse me but that honesty might be the biggest one.
Bold of you to assume Salmon Run players will stop playing or play less of Big Run when they get the golden quota and not try and get to max hazard 999 on every single Big Run map (and continue playing after that's accomplished)
FYI: making this comment after watching roughly halfway through this video (right after the side order review but before the Fresh season review). I was a huge Splatoon 2 fan back when the game first launched on Switch. Before Smash Ultimate was released, it was my most played game on the console clocking in on almost 500 hours. When Splatoon 3 came around, I played it a lot before ultimately stopping altogether after the first 3 seasons with 100 hours. (This was mainly due to my interests in games changing at the time and playing super long JRPGs such as Xenoblade Chronicles 3, Persona 5, etc took a priority.) I came back for side order but didn't touch the multiplayer but I started to REALLY get back into the game recently after the amazing Grandfest performance. After not playing the game for over a year I had a lot of fun seeing all the new weapons, stages, and customization to the game. In regards to Captain Astronaut's main point of criticism regarding how Splatoon 3 doesn't have a completely new mode compared to its predecessors, I agree but I don't see that as a bad thing. I think the amount of stuff/QOL features that Splatoon 3 was able to improve upon with its predecessors did so much for my enjoyment of the game to the point where I wouldn't be able to go back to Splatoon 2. That to me would make for a. better sequel than if they did make a completly new mode for the game but didn't really improve upon the content of the previous games. But yeah great retrospective Astronaut
I agree with everything you say. The QOL is amazing. Squid rolling makes the movement feel super fluent. I’m fine with no new multiplayer mode as if it’s bad it might make you play the game less. Another game I love to play forced us to play their new modes and it resulted in the lowest player count they’ve seen.
Seems like Captain was a bit hit or miss with that Nova Shot, makes sense to want to buff the Nova Shot. I am one of the odd folks who watched a lot from Splatoon 2-3, but only played 1. So this is a great video to see what this is like from a more experienced perspective. Also, just getting to hear Spaceman talk about stuff for a while is nice, you got a great speaking cadence and your jokes are 98% hit 2% miss. Well done on the video, and I always look forward to what you make next!
3 minutes WOOOOOO- but more seriously, I feel like we should think about what the team behind splatoon has been doing? the same team works on both animal crossing and splatoon, and while i want to say that there low upkeep of both splatoon 3 and animal crossing points towards an new animal crossing game on new hardware launch (judging by older game release)... it kinda feels the team has been doing so much "not upkeep" that it could be that either the team has been cut down significantly, or that they are dropping animal crossing and splat 4 both as hardware launch... maybe im overthinking it. tell me if i've done a stupid and missed something i really want to understand what going on man :(
It's less that EPD 5 is less of a team & more of a shared pool of talent that Splatoon & Animal Crossing draw from. That said, they do share 30-40% of their staff between any given project, which is larger percentage than games from different EPD divisions.
So funny when people still call Splatoon 2 Splatoon 1.5 when Salmon Run alone was more successful and impactful than every new Splatoon 3 feature combined. If Splatoon 2 is splat 1.5 then Splatoon 3 is splat 1.75
Both splatoon sequels have felt like a .5 edition of the previous game at launch, until enough updates come out for it to feel somewhat different. What sucks about 3 is that nearly every meaningful new addition was either limited time or came with it's own share of frustrations.
I still love S3 the most out of all 3, but I recognize that it needed more time in the oven. The movement is super refined, but the maps suck. The gunplay is great, but too many are undertuned or had bad kits and never got their time in the sun. Tbh i never had a problem with the catalog, but casual players seemed to hate it! And I think that’s emblematic of the issue here, the devs saw people with maxed out money at the end of S2 and decided to make everything a competitive grind. Scale rewards, badges, even shell-out rewards take forever to get, and nearly every event is a competition between players (setting a goal like with the final big run was perfect). For me with over 1000 hours I don’t mind every map throwing me into a fight, but other options are basically impossible on maps without flanks. They should’ve waited to start development on the new system, where we could’ve had bigger maps and supported the game for longer. I don’t understand why so many people are clamoring to have S4 so soon. If that’s really being worked on now, it’ll end up rushed just like every other game in the series.
I'll be honest. I burned myself out on splatoon. I got so sick of grinding for Battle pass slop, sick of DCs and being punished for it, sick of hownlong everything took to obtain I just put the game down, never looked back
I’ve had so much fun these past 2 years. Grand fest was literally so much fun and the music was amazing! Though I love deep cut they’re my favorite and seeing them get side lined so much in their own game really made me feel bad for them. (yes I know they’re fictional.) in my opinion deep cut should’ve had their own final fest then the team could be based off of Marie Pearl and the winner of the deep cut FF for grand fest. They wouldn’t even need to go as hard as they did for chaos Vs order. Then the fact that for the final video of the splatfest they didn’t even make the art deep cut where as sploon 1 got squid sisters and 2 got pearl and Marina.
20:57 and what they should’ve done is have the replica weapons have the same sub and specials as the ones in side order, instead of having the 26th look of the original splattershot
Buff the NovaShot. Unironically one of my favorite weapons that embodies the supposed Chaotic theme of this game. Love being effectively a glorified recon bot
I'm gonna defend Splattercolor Screen (gameplay-wise) cuz it's a good special and I'm getting kinda tired of people saying it's not (At least on CHydra) Screen is the most effective if you throw it to the right place in the right situation. You can block the view of chargers and/or displace them, easily get people off the tower with it and ever since the buff it received that allows it to deal damage to some object (most importantly the Rainmaker bubble) it became my go-to Hydra for TC and RM. The 40 damage it does is more than enough, mainly cuz they can run through it multiple times and get hit by it again. I think the reason it's not really liked is cuz of the weapons it's put on cuz I feel like it's a perfect fit for Hydra, a more backliner weapon. Additionally, it's great on Hydra cuz you can safely deplete your inktank, throw Screen and it'll fill it back up Now for the things I do agree with: -The effect should absolutely be changed. Maybe instead of the deep fryer sound it should muffle sounds instead -I never experienced any issue with the Screen blocking my view, from mine or teammates Screen, but making it more transparent for your team sound great. I guess it was designed this way to make it more fair for the receivers Overall, I think Screen is a good idea executed poorly and I kinda hope it comes back in S4 with changes
I remember playing a lot on release, between the single player campaign, salmon run grinding with friends, and occasional online matches, but after that, mostly just played Splatfests for tricolor matches, and Big Run for the cool new maps and boss salmonids. Played it more than both Splatoon 1 and 2 combined, I think, just because of how much easier it was to play coop with friends
side order is a good showcase of why it takes a team like supergiant years to make a roguelite like hades or hades 2, because you have to fine-tune every upgrade to feel meaningful and gel well with everything else, and why you can't just graft that as a dlc side mode to a game not designed around it by half-assing it with +10% whatever upgrades
While I'm upset that team Future lost, I do have a theory about team Past winning. The Splatoon team seems to care deeply about the world building, sometimes at the cost of gameplay or what other people want. Like how in a lobby there's holograms of people instead of actual people, even though we know the system could run it. I think when we go to the past, rules and regulations for turf war won't have been established yet, including kits. Kind of like the "wild west" of turf war. I think they may allow us to make our own kits, with the other balance parameters in play. I'm not too versed in kits, but let's say you Wanted a roller with burst bomb and kraken special. Each weapon would have a "points to special" value, which also coincides with the specials own "points to special" stat. So you had a good weapon, it'd take forever to charge a good special if you paired them together. Same would apply to Sub ink consumption and cooldowns. I don't mind having premade kits, but a problem with them is that they're pressured to come up with new ones and even when they do, there are plenty that just won't be fun for a lot of people. I played far more Splatoon 2 simply because it had kits I liked better. I used to be against custom kits, but if there's a good trade-off system that takes both weapon utility and special utility into consideration, it's rife with possibilities. I'd also like to see abilities tuned up too, I feel like a lot of them are far too situational and simply aren't worth equipping. Especially abilities that benefit from teammates dying. Those don't have any place in a semi-competitive shooter.
Buff Nova Shot, I also 5* Starred both Novas so I know the pain. Great video man you always cook. My idea for Splatfest is to just remove the Question, no more teams, no more mirror matches. Grinding up is already baked in to earn more super snails. Like you said add Challenges that run non-stop during Splatfest, and the token for the shellout refreshes every two hours. Have 6 maps on rotation(this is also just standard even not during splatfests). Add in Objective modes because Challenges are happening anyways. Create three more variants of Turf War. Keep fizzbangs but also if you can collect 10 fizz bangs then you can summon a special Fizz Lion, that looks like those dancing lions from Chinese festivals but made of fizz bang fireworks and it dances around you like a protection barrier for a couple of seconds. Splatfests would all have holiday themes like the 4 seasonal ones, along with full costumes representing those holidays not just a splatfest shirt that you have to return. And add a counter goal that the entire community wants to hit like in Grand Run. Something like launching fireworks or the second day's objective special map having a clear goal that can be tracked.
This game was doo doo horsewater and I don't expect 4 to be a better game unless they actually remember that map design is the most important aspect of a multiplayer game.
the worst part is that the maps looked super promising in the initial reveal trailer (only scorch but still) It was open and filled to the brim with alternate pathways and shit, something extremely reminiscent of Splatoon 1. They completely ruined it at launch. That map designer job position that opened shortly after the reveal was such a bad omen in retrospect
At least in the last few seasons they cooked up some fire maps with crableg, robo ramen, and marlin. And made umami, barnacle, undertow and mahi plus a few others a lot better.
no the most important part is movement, there is a reason for this game stayed fun even when the maps were garbage in the early seasons, its because the game feel and balancing is very good
My hope for Splat 4 is to never see the Squid Sisters in the main story. Or ever again. As a Deep Cut fan not only do I feel underserved by Nintendo, I feel spurned by the rest of the fandom. 0 points for the Splatfest? It would be funny if it weren’t so sad. And it’s weird that all the story and development for Off The Hook are paywalled, right? And if you’re gonna do that in Splat 2, least you could do is give Deep Cut a role in the DLC of their own game!
I think you only spurn yourself more by just declaring the Squid Sisters stop existing, whom a large majority of people love (including myself!) like you're not making it easy on yourself man. I also like Deep Cut (Frye is such a goober I love her), but I still don't feel the absolute shafting other fans of them seem to think they've gotten. Maybe underutilized, but not just thrown aside. I may be wrong but I think they have more dialogue written for their news reports than any other group.
@@squiddu I was probably too hyperbolic in my emotional state. Not never again, but not in the main campaign again. All idols deserve their spot in the sun. Including Off The Hook being allowed to be characters in a main story outside of DLC.
They got shafted as hell. They were insulted and talked down to the moment they made their introduction and constantly when the player fought them, only for Marie to become their "boss." This makes them canonically and permanently in an inferior position to more fleshed-out characters. The biggest waste _ever._

good job on the vid, i can tell on how a lot of effort was spent for this one! i don't agree with a lot of your points, but i think you succeeded on making a video that promotes retrospective action however, i think you spent a lot of time focusing on the "missed potentials" of the game rather than what the game actually does provide one example would be the Side Order segment: you spent a lot of time talking about what the DLC "could" be, but not about what the DLC actually is (which is providing a new twist in the Splatoon formula, etc etc), so i felt like it was lacking overall though, your video is great! you should be proud of what you've done, regardless of my personal feelings with it
The wait for Bamboozler to get one extra kit was so painful... us Bamboozler mains got shafted. Also I am in love with Frye. Also also, don't... make fun of the Recycled Brella. I love it.
If you asked me what I want from Splatoon 4, given my team (Team Past) won the Grand Fest, I’d want: - Better Maps, built on par with Splatoon 1 - Better Weapon kits - An apartment you could decorate instead of a locker - More options with amiibo than boring poses - New Splatfest rewards that mirror the team you joined (like decorations or themed Gear) - Axe out Tricolor, 3 team Splatfests, the gacha machine, Sheldon Coupons for weapons, Catalogs - Make losing matches not feel as bad, don’t show the opposing team’s emojis - Hangout events or moments with your allies of the Story Campaign or the idols - Add fun places to hang out that are only for the jellyfish (like a coffee shop, arcade, library, etc) - Give Gear boosts if you wear an entire set (BotW style) - Replace Salmon Run since, lore wise, Grizz is axed out (Maybe they can be Splat 4’s Campaign bad guys) - Bring back the minigames to the city lobbies - Maybe make shops 3D spaces - Make playing “For Fun” and “For Glory” optional at the start to avoid 1 sided fights - More customize options for your squid/Octo on par with PKMN Sc/Vi and adjusting hat placements for haircuts - Have idols aide their teams during Splatfest’s last 24 hours (showing up as map hazards) - Trade in lower leveled drink tickets to redeem for a bigger one - Lower the fragment totals for changing Gear abilities - Give more chance for MALE idols than Big Man At the end of it all, my favorite thing of 3 was the Grand Festival and I’d RATHER play 2 than 3 now because the maps/weapons are better and Salmon Run feels more challenging without chucking eggs or spanning more enemies on the field. I just HATE playing Splatoon 3.
In terms of me wanting better maps, how about they be in locations that don’t (in the world’s reality) affect business like a grocery store/restaurant/mall fountain. How about setting them in more so abandoned areas or parks/sport arenas
Splatoon 3 new weapons are so different from splatoon 2, they try to spand the support rooster in chill season, and then make the long awaited buff to new weapons like the accuracy that heavy needed, more dmg that want brushes, etc.

Including Splatfests is just a thing they kinda HAVE to do now though because it’s such a big part of the series, but the game feels like it’s doing a really poor job at remembering whom those fests were supposed to be for in the first place.
i stopped playing splatfests after the chocolate splatfest. the extreme amount of mirror matches mixed with the sweats were so exhausting.
I thought it was just a me thing cause I couldn't really find a reason of why I felt that, but I think you summed it up pretty well
It sounds like this game isn't beating the splatoon 2.5 allegations

Tony, is that you!?!?
I think it serves as a good sequal, just having missed potential that could be felt
This is the last place I would expect to see you lol
Gear system is trash and always has been honestly, random ability rolling and no way to buy chunks makes it take forever.
Yeah. When horrorboros dropped, I was grinding out matches with a team until the very end, and we went through hell...only to find out we were 2 eggs away from the gold threshold when the results dropped :-/
Very much felt like getting smacked by a curve that Overfishers set until Splat3 started listing the thresholds outright.
I also like the threshold because once you get where you want you can just stop. even though Big Run is over the weekend I don't think most people have the time to grind it out, so knowing how much the effort you put in so far will get you is great
Biggest disappointment was the maps. They all feel the same. Even the returning Splatoon 1 maps have a lot of what made them unique taken out.

Don't feel bad lol
I got the game on launch, maxed out the catalog for the first season and dropped it until final fest basically.
Well you didn't really miss that much. Big big run was probably the most important ones you missed AND the Grand Festival

A very very unfortunate fate for what could’ve been another great idol group
Buff the Splattershot Nova
They may return. I mean they're team future and the future is S4. I get what you mean though.

Also, the Splatoon series time-wise progresses at the same rate as the real world (2 years passing for us is the same as 2 years passing for them in-universe), so I seriously doubt it's going to go back to the past, maybe doing that descendants thing like you mentioned.
Catalogue = Battle Pass
Doesn't matter what a company calls it, it's Anti Consumer at it's core, and makes games a *chore* rather than an escape
Yeah...
P.S I also was one of five novashot users I do wish they had buffed it at some point.
how many maps are long hallways? its just eeltail and hammerhead what are you talking about?
I loved the hell out of Splatoon 1 and 2, but when I got 3, I was just so underwhelmed and frustrated with the boring map design, and piss poor match making. After losing way more matches than I was winning (as a B+ player usually) I just, never picked up the game again. There was a period where I wanted to get all of the cool stuff from the catalogues, but once I found out just how much time you need to sink into this game, I just never bothered.

Splatoon 3 had so much missed potential that everyone noticed it even little timmy. Big runs felt more special than splatfests since everything it came around something new was getting added to the mode while splatfests only added something truly new in the grand festival.

The biggest mistake in this game is the matchmaking.
That shit goes straight to the trash.
also I miss when there were less weapon types so you had more choices of sub/special loadouts with the same main

I was so confused when people (and even some squad mates) gassed up splatoon 3 so much back at launch, when it didn't seem to have much distinct from splatoon 2. I wonder what they're thinking now.
I'm also confused what people saw and expected back then.
i mainly expected good new maps, but the layouts were so boring
I 5-starred the vanilla undercover (surprisingly fun, I'm shocked too) and I'd sell my soul for viable buffs. Brellas are shotguns, let the whole class be lethal at point blank, like the tenta brella. And buff the nova shot!
Man I miss the shifty stations - they were a chance for wacky stage ideas. I remember so many from Splatoon 2 fondly.

I...never thought of it that way...
6:25 very funny how you throw a wavebreaker after mentioning it
To this day it still blows my mind that the chill season 2023 trailer showed off screen and not splashdown.
Weapon feel is totally a thing in TPS/FPS as a genre. Gets discussed pretty often in different communities.
You don't need to shake the controller for fizzy. Just jiggle the right stick and it will charge just as fast.
i LOVE splatoon 3 but i have much more fond memories of splatoon 2. really wish the update cycle and content added was more substantial

3 minutes WOOOOOO-
but more seriously, I feel like we should think about what the team behind splatoon has been doing?
the same team works on both animal crossing and splatoon, and while i want to say that there low upkeep of both splatoon 3 and animal crossing points towards an new animal crossing game on new hardware launch (judging by older game release)... it kinda feels the team has been doing so much "not upkeep" that it could be that either the team has been cut down significantly, or that they are dropping animal crossing and splat 4 both as hardware launch... maybe im overthinking it. tell me if i've done a stupid and missed something i really want to understand what going on man :(
It's less that EPD 5 is less of a team & more of a shared pool of talent that Splatoon & Animal Crossing draw from. That said, they do share 30-40% of their staff between any given project, which is larger percentage than games from different EPD divisions.
They did not beat the splatoon 2.5 allegations

Then the fact that for the final video of the splatfest they didn’t even make the art deep cut where as sploon 1 got squid sisters and 2 got pearl and Marina.
wait do people not have side order music in their regular music playlist?? I already listen to music like sorder music so maybe its just me
20:57 and what they should’ve done is have the replica weapons have the same sub and specials as the ones in side order, instead of having the 26th look of the original splattershot
I mean, that would lock those weapons behind a paywall, which is kinda P2W

captain astro + splatoon + 1 hour = pure joy (even if they will never buff the Nova Shot)
Buff the NovaShot. Unironically one of my favorite weapons that embodies the supposed Chaotic theme of this game.
Love being effectively a glorified recon bot
oh hey its the only Splatoon that i beat the Story Mode in
I'm gonna defend Splattercolor Screen (gameplay-wise) cuz it's a good special and I'm getting kinda tired of people saying it's not
(At least on CHydra)
Screen is the most effective if you throw it to the right place in the right situation.
Additionally, it's great on Hydra cuz you can safely deplete your inktank, throw Screen and it'll fill it back up
Now for the things I do agree with:
-The effect should absolutely be changed. Maybe instead of the deep fryer sound it should muffle sounds instead
-I never experienced any issue with the Screen blocking my view, from mine or teammates Screen, but making it more transparent for your team sound great. I guess it was designed this way to make it more fair for the receivers
Overall, I think Screen is a good idea executed poorly and I kinda hope it comes back in S4 with changes
This game was doo doo horsewater and I don't expect 4 to be a better game unless they actually remember that map design is the most important aspect of a multiplayer game.
the worst part is that the maps looked super promising in the initial reveal trailer (only scorch but still)
It was open and filled to the brim with alternate pathways and shit, something extremely reminiscent of Splatoon 1. They completely ruined it at launch.
That map designer job position that opened shortly after the reveal was such a bad omen in retrospect
At least in the last few seasons they cooked up some fire maps with crableg, robo ramen, and marlin. And made umami, barnacle, undertow and mahi plus a few others a lot better.
robo romen?
no the most important part is movement, there is a reason for this game stayed fun even when the maps were garbage in the early seasons, its because the game feel and balancing is very good
@@BigPro1123 those maps are not good, they still suffer from being way too cramped + only one route to take
My hope for Splat 4 is to never see the Squid Sisters in the main story.

The trailer concept art still being the most interesting thing about side order is so real
good job on the vid, i can tell on how a lot of effort was spent for this one! i don't agree with a lot of your points, but i think you succeeded on making a video that promotes retrospective action
however, i think you spent a lot of time focusing on the "missed potentials" of the game rather than what the game actually does provide
one example would be the Side Order segment: you spent a lot of time talking about what the DLC "could" be, but not about what the DLC actually is (which is providing a new twist in the Splatoon formula, etc etc), so i felt like it was lacking
overall though, your video is great! you should be proud of what you've done, regardless of my personal feelings with it

If you asked me what I want from Splatoon 4, given my team (Team Past) won the Grand Fest, I’d want:
- Better Maps, built on par with Splatoon 1
- Better Weapon kits
- An apartment you could decorate instead of a locker
- More options with amiibo than boring poses
- New Splatfest rewards that mirror the team you joined (like decorations or themed Gear)
- Axe out Tricolor, 3 team Splatfests, the gacha machine, Sheldon Coupons for weapons, Catalogs
- Make losing matches not feel as bad, don’t show the opposing team’s emojis
- Hangout events or moments with your allies of the Story Campaign or the idols
- Add fun places to hang out that are only for the jellyfish (like a coffee shop, arcade, library, etc)
- Give Gear boosts if you wear an entire set (BotW style)
- Replace Salmon Run since, lore wise, Grizz is axed out (Maybe they can be Splat 4’s Campaign bad guys)
- Bring back the minigames to the city lobbies
- Maybe make shops 3D spaces
- Make playing “For Fun” and “For Glory” optional at the start to avoid 1 sided fights
- More customize options for your squid/Octo on par with PKMN Sc/Vi and adjusting hat placements for haircuts
- Have idols aide their teams during Splatfest’s last 24 hours (showing up as map hazards)
- Trade in lower leveled drink tickets to redeem for a bigger one
- Lower the fragment totals for changing Gear abilities
- Give more chance for MALE idols than Big Man
At the end of it all, my favorite thing of 3 was the Grand Festival and I’d RATHER play 2 than 3 now because the maps/weapons are better and Salmon Run feels more challenging without chucking eggs or spanning more enemies on the field. I just HATE playing Splatoon 3.
In terms of me wanting better maps, how about they be in locations that don’t (in the world’s reality) affect business like a grocery store/restaurant/mall fountain. How about setting them in more so abandoned areas or parks/sport arenas
Wdym the last Salmon Run map isn't special, it's probably one of the best ones we got in the entire franchise
Splatoon 3 new weapons are so different from splatoon 2, they try to spand the support rooster in chill season, and then make the long awaited buff to new weapons like the accuracy that heavy needed, more dmg that want brushes, etc.
