How I Discovered Sketching - And A Sketch Of A Cake With Strawberries On Top

  • It's twelve years now since I discovered sketching. By that I mean everyday sketching, everywhere sketching, making art of the world around you part of your daily life. Even though I had been an artist - and a woking one, at that - since the age of fourteen, I had never carried around my sketching stuff with me as a matter of course.
All that changed in 2012 when my family and I made the bold move to live on a tiny island in the middle of the Indian Ocean for six months. Mauritius is many things: a honeymoon destination, a tropical paradise, a peaceful country, a centre of business entrepreneurship from the single old lady selling a couple of mangoes on the roadside to tech start-ups. And it's where my passion for sketching was born simply because my mother insisted that I would open her birthday gift to me while I was there. The gift, a prettily-wrapped, pink be-ribboned book I stuffed into my suitcase, ended up changing my life. (Mothers! They are our personal angels.)
I started by sketching the birthday gifts my kids had given me and by the time we left the island I had sketched everything from religious buildings - there are a lot of them in Mauritius - to markets and turquoise lagoons, to the Mauritians who came and stared at my sketching activities and entertained me with their chatter. I even wrote a memoir about my time there, which I still hope to publish. (That was really my first book, even though it remains a manuscript on a hard drive somewhere.)
Sketching changed everything for me. It is the reason I have a career, but much more than that it's brought me serenity and a deep satisfaction. We all need to express ourselves as humans, and for some reason sketching fits the bill for me. I know it does for so many of you too, and that's the WHY of my evangelical passion for teaching.
There'll be lots more stuff about my time in Mauritius because you';ve told me you would like to hear more - if that's you too, then you should subscribe to my blog, which is on my website, roisincure.com.
I hope you enjoy the video of sketching the yummy cake too!
    Feeling quite peckish now :)
Happy sketching and I will see you next time!
    Róisín

Thank you for the background on yourself. I found Urban Sketchers in 2022 Spring/Summer. I read your books and all of the others. I did this online because of Covid. I am 65 years old. I had drawing in high school 1975-1977. I have sketched in and off over the years. My dad was a sign painter and an artist. For years I could not find a community of artists anywhere. RUclips is a life saver. You people inspire me every day. Thank you.

For me it was also Danny Gregory who started me on the habit of working in sketchbooks and that made all the difference. Before that it was just random doodling and throwing away the results. Now sketching has purpose and it brings so much joy and fullfillment. And the memories that hit me when I flip through an older sketchbook! It's quite magical. Thank you, Danny. And thank you, Roísín for this wonderful channel on RUclips.

Thank YOU for your words. The joy of sketching is just waiting for us all, and those little sketchbooks are our treasure troves of memories in a way that photos can never be. And of course…thank you Danny.

You and Danny both bring such joy and confidence to the process. I love following the both of you! Inspiring to say the least! I really enjoy how you use the colored ink for the different parts. I am attempting that w micron fineliners.

That’s because you need a nudge. I have a free live class coming up you might like: when there’s a “ready steady Go!” aspect to it and you’re with a big group that might kick start you. Or you could hold your local chapter. Where are you based? I might know of one.

@@ladyamalthea85 there has got to be a group! It’s a fab way to start. One of our local sketchers has just completed her first sketch after being with the outings for 8 months.
