@UC99f-Nqscfq79T5b53NaVMQ It really depends on what kind of books you want to read. For almost all Christians, I suggest C.S. Lewis' Mere Christianity. I also suggest the Catechism of the Council of Trent, the Summa Theologica by Thomas Aquinas, Faith of our Fathers by Cardinal Gibbons. I am not a fan of books written in the last 50 years, but if I had to choose something, it would be Probes: Deep Sea Diving into Saint John's Gospel by Peter Kreeft, Surprised by Truth by Patrick Madrid, or anything by Scott Hahn. And of course, The NASB Catholic Study Bible. I've read my Bible 8 times front to back and probably over 15 times total. Memorize the Gospel of John. Learn how the early Church Fathers and the early Christians practiced their faith. The fundaments of what is means to be a Christian is to have the Eucharist (celebrate the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass) and be Baptized. This was never questioned by any of the early Christians or by anyone for over 1100 years after Christ.

I found out the hard way, that if papyrus is not stored properly, it can disintegrate very quickly. Another reason why vellum and parchment were preferred. I had made a copy of a portion of one of the gospels in Greek, on papyrus, and after I had used them set them on top of a bookcase. They fell down behind it, and stayed there until I moved. When I moved the bookcase, all that was left was parts of two pages. Badly decomposed.

Matt...great to see you take up the Dead Sea Scrolls. An interesting (to me anyway) sidenote: In 1957 I was in freshman Old Testament History at Trinity University, San Antonio. One text book, published two or three years earlier, took passing notice of the Scrolls, saying that parchment scrolls found recently near the Dead Sea seemed to offer an "interesting corroboration" of biblical writings but that mire study was needed. That has always seemed to be an overly cautious way to approach anything as profound as the Dead Sea Scrolls. But I suppose that was the safest way to introduce a significant event of such magnitude and hang on to your research grants at the same time. Great topic!!!

I’ve been sliding away from religion for a while now. Each day, I find more issues with the theology, doctrines, and practices of each religion. I hear u dude, but what I've come realize is that I usually stop praying and trying to be intentional with the way I spend my time whenever I start pulling away from Christianity. If I ever have an issue with christianity its mostly with people being hypocrites or being ignorant about stuff. But, I always have to remind myself that I'm just as bad as the next guy and I need to work on myself and my relationship with God before I begin to judge others.
As for the doctrine/theology itself I'm orthodox christian and I honestly dont know that much about orthodoxy. I don't think every part of orthodoxy is perfect but I do believe its the best way to live as a christian (just because all the traditional fasts help keep you spiritually strong, and other stuff I find in orthodoxy that isn't in Catholicism or protestants) In the end, when I'm really struggling I try to block out other people and just decide to study the scriptures myself. The hardest thing I've had to do is to consider I might be wrong about christianity as a whole, but I realized that it shouldn't be the scariest thing because if Christianity is wrong then I've been believing a lie. But if it's true the dumbest thing I could do is to leave it, especially since I wouldn't have an excuse.
Just curious what issues do you find with the theology/doctrines/practices of each religion.

13But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.”

So after witnessing just a single "miracle" from Paul the deceiver they were conforming to their already held beliefs. No wonder when they heard of this guy Jesus with all the stories of his miracles, it was very easy for them to take him as "Son of God" (and this concept later on developed in to taking him as God) as this already went hand in hand with their pagan and mythological belief system. Little wonder that those times and those places and people also had "Triads" and ancient "Trinities" and "God" in threes and stuff.

I had an opportunity to view the Dead Sea Scrolls when they were touring through Seattle back in... 2007? 2006? Anyway, it was quite memorable, and absolutely a highlight of my life. Most of the scrolls were kept in a darkened room, and they would only be lit for a few seconds at a time to help preserve them, but there was a copper one that didn't have that problem, so it was out in the open near the beginning of the exhibit.
I'm super interested to see how you tackle these.

Jubilees and Enoch were some of the most common findings there as well. You know the books that were in the Bible but the Pharisees did everything they could to remove them. Also The essenes did not dwell in Qumran. This was the area that John the Baptist lived his life not the essenes.

Just the previous spring we had learned about the different Jewish sects in our Scripture class, and some of the art that was in the exhibit were pieces we had seen in our art history class that very week - super cool.

So as a person just looking into all of this magnificent story I feel like I have to try and start from the beginning, through till the end, but than after "kind of" having the whole story, go through the book of enoch and the dead sea scrolls as more missed stories and info.
It's like the original star wars series but this is all history. That's a really bad joke but it's just what it reminds me of.
Why was all of this hidden? Why scattered about the earth? So much hidden from all of us, still today. Lots of lies and sleght of hand at and to the most pristine levels. This last little part makes perfect sense to me from the very little that I have learned.

Pliny the Elder, actually identified the Essen community as being north of Ein-Gedi " above the cliffs" and arecelogist have identified the site! Ein-Gedi is approximately 30 kilometers south of Qumron. Secondly, the Essens were gnostic and it would be unlikely they would have kept 67 books of the bible which was the majority of manuscripts that were found in Qumron. Who did live in Qumron at that time was John the Baptist who was preaching and baptizing and was known as the " Teacher of Righteousness " John the Baptist was the son of a levite priest who served in the Temple and his mother was of the lineage of King David. So most likely the Q- manuscripts are not of the Essens but the library's of John the Baptist who's followers hid his library after he was beheaded. It should also be noted that the community at Qumron was known for producing two products, parchment for writing manuscripts and Temple insence. The Essens would not have use for insence and no gnostic manuscripts were found in Qumron.

Hey Matt, I got into a recent quarrel with one of my friends about random political convictions, and she said, "The American Conservatives paid the German translators to change 'arsenoikotai' from 'man who lie with boy' to man to lie with man' in Leviticus and 1 Corinthians." I know that's not the case because Josephus spoke wrote that the cultural conviction of the Jews was that is was not right for man to lie with man in Josephus's book against Apion II under chapter 25. I love homosexuals but this is a matter of the integrity of the church and the inerrancy of Scripture. The source she is referring to came from United Methodist Insight, so it seems to be a denominational thing. I was wondering if you could offer insight into the translation of that word by replying or making a video about what you find. Best of regards, I love your content, eyes wide open faith is the way to go, keep it up.
