How the Dead Sea Scrolls "Bible" Differs from the Traditional Hebrew Text

  • Of course, we know there is no "DSS Bible" per se, but 40% of the scrolls are from Hebrew Bible texts--but they have significantly different readings, some of which agree with the Greek Septuagint (LXX) and the Samaritan Pentateuch. In this recent on-line presentation Dr. Tabor offers an overview of the topic and introduces resources for further study.
One major point, that most sources have missed, is that representations of the book of Esther--previously thought to be missing from the Scrolls, has now been identified--don't take this Purim find too seriously, but enjoy the read: www.thetorah.com/article/newl...

On Purim we read the Megillah of Esther. We also drink wine to the point we cannot distinguish between "blessed is Mordechai" and "cursed is Hamman." Thus it is fitting that the fragment from the book of Esther had wine spilled all over it. Evidently the Essenes really got into the spirit of Purim.

Hello Stephan, I am curious to hear more about what you are saying here. What exactly do you mean that the Judeo Christian feelings are so strong in your life? And what are you getting from this video. I am so shaken by all the searching I have done and have only today come to this video. I am not sure what he is teaching and what I am to believe anymore. I was raised in a conservative Christian church and walked away from it a few years ago when they couldn't give me real answers to my questions. I do know that I miss believing in Jesus. The search for Truth is a lifelong pursuit, and there are many serpents trying to deceive you all along the Way. Jesus was Jewish too. His disciples were Jewish. God intended for His chosen people to bring Christ's Kingdom on earth, by teaching the Gospel to the whole world. That's how the Jews were intended to make the world a better place. It was by producing the Messiah, and spreading His divine Word. There's still plenty of work to do for Christ Jesus.

Thank you for this scholarly presentation. The stimulus for getting my Bachelor's degree in Comparative Religion from a secular university was because of my quest to learn as much as I could about the Bible, Christianity, and Judaism from an academic perspective rather than simply push the "I believe" button to accommodate a certain theology. I questioned how so many clergies from different denominations and even different churches within those denominations could have such a widely divergent theology when all claim to have the Bible as the foundation of their belief system. My answer came of course in seeing the Bible as a collection of texts written by ancient Jews for ancient Jews and not for modern Christians with little or no critical understanding of the Bible's origins, linguistics, and social and historical context. Professor Tabor, you do a great service to us all with your excellent presentation. I only regret that I did not find your channel sooner.

Women have never been allowed equality of thoughts, power or leadership except during Greek civilization that women should always ask this question from the moment born.

Yah, a discarded newspaper section may be a snapshot of a specific point in time, but if the context is lost over time it is relegated to curiosities and mysteries until enough accumulate. Then, scholarly research can hopefully say they were newspaper clips and this is the date. Personally I believe what relegates ancient writings to a category of 'sacred or Holy' would be in preserving the sense of tomorrow will come and it will be better, so that people can hang in there in bad times.

Since then His Word has been continually revealed to His chosen ones. Over the years scribes have recorded and very carefully maintained them with the highest care. God always had a remnant who kept His Word though traditions and laws and storytelling. We are confident that what we read today, which are translations, is a reliable source for our faith, because the scriptural manuscripts have been analyzed, researched, compared with other historical documents and traditions etc
The translations are true copies of the manuscripts they are based on. Between manuscripts itself there is little variation that affect core beliefs and doctrines, considering the 4000 year spread.
Christian's are also open to discussions and are honest enough to identify discrepancies in translations if any. We know this is not mans word because of the prophesies that were fulfilled and God will preserve His Word for all generations.

Motivated by this video I've purchased a copy of the DSS Bible. There is an aspect of the bible that I'm a bit confused about and that's how the words translated to English are shown as fragmented, IE 'fac[e of the dee]p'. Since the language of the fragments is Hebrew, or Aramaic , translation to English is typically done on a 'word by word' basis, or done by phrasing the meaning of passages. This confuses me a little because in the first instance in my sample, 'fac' is considered to be intact, and 'e' is added because it's missing, and also 'dee' is missing, where 'p' is added. I know of no translation to English from any language that is a letter for letter translation, so what am I to understand? That the first three letters of the Hebrew were in tact and the following letter or letters are missing?
Not having the DSS in the orignal language as well as not knowing how to read it, I can't really look for myself.
If anyone can offer some insight I would appreciate it.

    • @ioneltorac

@@ioneltorac I assumed it was due to missing letters in the Aramaic, Hebrew. However how would those missing letters in another language actually equate to showing missing letters in the English translation, and interestingly enough they tend to be at the beginning or end of the English words as I'm reading them?
In translation it's never a 'letter by letter' translation of the words, but rather the meaning of the word instead, and as such this brought about my question. It cannot be a precise transition, so my best guess not knowing any different is that it's representative of the original language word having it's beginning or it's end missing so maybe the publishers represented this by clipping off the beginning or end of the English words.

For most of its history they have been under control of Roman Catholic and Vatican connected gate keepers.

@M H So does that mean the New Testament should be tossed out , or at least viewed under heavy skepticism ... and we need to add their writings reforming the bible (word of God) ?
Since clearly the NT seems to have a pacifist view towards iniquity compared , which one can get the view it is Romes adoption of the "Sons of Light" views ... but flipped. Or maybe just what people then came up with , because being angry and exclusionary with Rome and it's rule was to exhausting and ultimately proved fatal . So I guess a concept of ... If you can't beat them , then join them ... which did lead to christian concepts then taking over. Albeit with the conundrum of ... is it still pure , and how much does that purity really matter ?
IDK ... just some obvious questions that come to my mind if in fact Jesus was their teacher of righteousness.

While this may sound weird, the Septuagint was the dominant version of the Jewish Bible in circulation in the 1st century. Remember, most literate Jews in this era either lived in the greater Roman Empire (which spoke Greek) or were educated in Greek schools and had Greek names even if they lived in Israel. In fact, the very Sadducees who controlled the Temple and were considered the preeminent teachers of the Bible and many of the Pharisees (like Josephus himself) were either promoting Greek or were primarily speaking Greek themselves. The writers of the gospels were writing to actual Greeks and Hellenized Jews, so of course they would have transcribed Jesus' quotes in the form their audiences would have been familiar with, and that's the Septuagint.
Also, the Masoretic text didn't exist yet.

While the KJV says Arphaxad was only 35 when he begot Cainan, and lops 100 years off the rest of the post flood generation. By that time, in Fear, they would be Grasping for something good. Which could have been two or more scenarios. At a time when several Religions may have been Practiced. Different God for different situations. Pagan Religions had several god’s they expect to save them from various types of problems. So two Messiahs would not be out of the way for a Prophet or Scribes to Record. Just a thought.😃🙏

Which compilation of Greek translations of Hebrew stories do you consider to be "the septuagint" ?
Which translations, if any, are considered authentic ?
Isn't it just as fallacious to refer to "the septuagint" as it is to refer to "the bible" ?

I am not a scholarly man, (I cannot even type this without spell check) but I do find all this very interesting. Variations in text do not as a rule bother me much. I feel the information God intended is there if one chooses to seek it. The one thing I have trouble with is when people give binary options on how to read the Old Testament. I seldom see a one best way to read, but several. In scripture, I tend to see four things at once. many passages appear to me to be; An historical account of the time, a prophesy to come soon, a prophesy about Christ's first coming,, and in some cases also about the end times to come. We have got to get away from narrow fundamentalism and recognize the many layers God packed into His written word. He did not waist any space and He packed His written word full of delightful for the soul to be nourished.
But then again, I barely made it through high-school 40 years ago, so what do I know? 🤠

So I tend to go the other way. I am a terrible speller, I never was good at memorization and have had to work very hard to accumulate the few scraps of knowledge I do have.
what is interesting to me is that for nearly 50 years, I was the odd man out in any church group setting because I had an intuitive sense that many parts of scripture were being interpreted wrong, but I have lacked the knowledge I needed to make a case. This last year I found Dr Michael Heiser, and for the first time, I have some tools I can sort of use.

John the immerser was 6 months older than Yeshua. When Herod gave the decree to kill all the boys 2 years old and under, John would have been under that decree. Yah had already warned Joseph to take Yeshua and flee to Egypt. John was most likely hidden in Qumran, in the wilderness. Yeshua talks about Zechariah being killed at the temple altar. Josephus also mentioned the priest who was killed because he would not give up his son. People knew John had a miraculous birth, Zechariah could not speak until John was named. They probably figured John was the child they were looking for. They killed Zechariah, John's father. Most likely they did the same with Elizabeth as his mother was not mentioned again. John remained in Qumran and that is most likely where he came from in the wilderness.

The first letter of "EMeT" (truth) is the first leter of the first ever Aleph-Bet (Hebrew) It is the language that G-d used to CREATE the Universes. The middle letter is the MIDDLE of the Aleph bet and the last letter is the LAST letter in the hebrew Aleph Bet....now, does that detract from the word "truth"? Of course, look up how many OTHER English words are there for "Truth". Worse: today people say "Well this is MY Truth". How can their be a "My" truth. True is true and in Hebrew there is ONE word. The Infinite NAME of G-d (HE revealled it) is 4 letters. Each letter stands for a word written by each letter. YWEH means "{G-D} Always was, {G-d} Always IS, and {G-d} Always Will Be, but in Holy Hebrew (G-d's Building Bl ocks of truth) It has deeper conotations, we understand the CREATION from that word, we notice how each letter in Hebrew is in DIRECTION, how it is written we see that the first letter is a seminal flash of Infinite Light which comes down into physicality and BROADENS and then the next letter is like a ladder that from the broadening of Creation (The Big Bang) it goes from broadening the cosmos into a downward level further and further until Spirit becomes physical. Isn’t, however, the LXX a later Greek compilation and not of just the Torah, but of the entire Tanak? As you know, the Torah portion of Tanak (first five Books of Moses) is all the 70 translated to Greek and it was destroyed in Alexandria. There’s no existing copy of it today.
What is your take on that?
