  • This video was taken in June 2010, before the big changes. As part of the Weymouth Transport Package (WTP) for the 2012 Olympic Games, several of the town's main roundabouts were removed and replaced with traffic lights.
    The objectives were:
To improve bus punctuality and reliability  To improve bus quality  To improve bus/rail interchange  To improve journey times for all traffic  To improve journey time reliability for all traffic  To improve air quality  To improve pedestrian safety.
10 years on, it appears that few if any of those aims have been met.
I have uploaded this video for anyone who knows the town to judge for themselves whether the WTP was a success.

Without the harbour roundabout there is nowhere to put the Christmas tree!

Personally I think it looked alot better road layout back then as those traffic lights cause nothing but chaos especially the lights at the bottom of boot hill

I wondered why the roundabouts were removed, now I know. It would be very interesting to research: 1. the traffic engineer's justification for the cost of removing them and 2. whether or not monitoring of traffic flow befor and after their removal upheld the justification or not. My gut feeling is traffic flow is worse now, after their removal.

Hi Stuart, Having just posted my comment below I have read your text below the video which sets out why the roundabouts were removed. Did the Council monitor traffic after the roundabouts were removed to see if their objectives were achieved? If not why not?

Kings street by train station flows better now. But hell of a cost just for that.

Boot Hill is 1 of most pollution places in the area now thanks to the traffic lights on the hill.

Very true. And the frequent queues going uphill are much worse than when there was an efficient min-roundabout.
