It's also interesting to consider that the reason why the Aten became so popular during Amenhotep III's and Akhenaten's rule may have been political moreso than spiritual since Amun's priests in Thebes held an immense amount of power. The pharaohs at the time would've needed to stay on their good side and try to appease them. By demoting Amun, the royal court stripped the Amun priesthood of that power and by making themselves the only conduit between the human and the divine, they conferred it on themselves. It's kinda similar to how Henry VIII made himself head of the Church of England after splitting off from Rome. Political and spiritual power combined in one office and one person. Of course, though, we can't know Amenhotep III's and Akhenaten's exact motivations and a lot of Akhenaten's actions do seem to suggest that he did actually believe in this new religion of his so it may have been a mix of the two or it may have started out as political scheming under his father but then turned into genuine belief under Akhenaten. It's impossible to know but it's fun to think about.

NeonKitty, I think you may have stumbled onto something. Amun's priests did have immense power. Also, under the Amun priests they believed in more than one G-d. Polytheism. Akhenaten didn't bring about monotheism as we know it. Akhenaten only believed that Aten was the only G-d worth worshiping. The clerics didn't like this. The clerics even arranged the murder of Akhenaten. They did arrange for Tutankhamen to become a Pharaoh. Then the religion moved back to what it was before his father saw the light. By the way, when funds went low, the clerics robbed the pyramids and the royals. The only one's untouched were Aktenaten and King Tut. His son. And his wife.

I don't doubt he believed in it strongly. If he threw the old gods out at all, that is true dedication. Changing his name also indicates this. Also, the priests not only saw this as an attempt on their power, it was, but they also would have seen it as an abandonment of righteousness. The king had thrown out God, basically, and embraced evil.
      Harlan Abraham, love your name!

    • @neon-kitty
      @neon-kitty Год назад

@@Svensk7119 I mean, he doesn't seem to have denied the other gods' existence, he "just" stopped worshipping them and closed their temples (thereby stripping their priests of power). But yeah, like I said, I do think Akhenaten probably believed in his new religion (the hymns he wrote for the Aten certainly sound like the words of a true believer). But Aten had already started becoming more popular under his father Amenhotep III and I wouldn't be surprised if that rise in popularity (that eventually led to Akhenaten believing in it) was politically motivated. And some of Akhenaten's religious decision-making may have been influenced by political concerns, as well, even if he truly believed in his new doctrine.

    • @Svensk7119
      @Svensk7119 Год назад

@@neon-kitty I am sure. I just think it is a little cart-before-the-horse. If he truly believed, his political motives would have come from that. They would have reinforced his religion. His father appears to have been slightly lazy, in a poetic sense. (My opinion only, a'course). He fell into one habit of address, when there were so many poeticisms in the language. Maybe he was religiously big for his britches, but that is pure conjecture. Number IV, however.... he went the whole nine yards. And twice again! He sounds like a convert, and there is no zealot like a convert. Changing his name? Check. Altering religious conventions built over centuries? Check. Restructuring his court to accommodate? Check. These drastic changes all sound of conversion. Perhaps he had these beliefs in situ for sometime, but Something had to change for him to bring them forth.
The other thing he seems is a narcissist. All he did made himself more important. He seems to have been some degree of unhinged, as well. Somewhere between Sadam Hussein and Adolf Hitler, though I mean that for unhingement only. I have heard nothing of him being murderous.

I've always thought that most of Akenhaten's reforms reeked of someone wanting to undermine the power of priesthoods and other power structures that he (possibly) felt had gained too much power.
From the possible worship of his powerful (and thus likely respected) father, the exclusion of a priesthood in his new religion to the herculean undertaking of building a new administrative capital (which I would deem more easily defended) my admittedly layman opinion is that it's an avenue worth investigating.
Remembering that these societal structures weren't completely uprooted and seemingly instituted a reasonably extreme damnatio memoriae after reinstalling themselves after his immediate successors, it's really no wonder why his reputation is lousy.
That being said it is extremely likely that the complete societal upheaval resulting from this proposed war against the theocratic organisation would have prevented him from being a competent ruler.

Maybe it's already been mentioned within other comments, but in the 1980’s Ra the Law of One communicated much on ancient Egypt, including their state of pantheism and some interesting words on Akhenaten, which I feel amalgamates to your research. Many thanks

Excellent episode. I have often wondered about a possible connection between the monotheistic tendencies of Akhenaten and change to monotheism in Judaism. This is the first show I have seen in which it is mentioned and your mentioning of the similar texts is new information for me. I have always looked at the chronology - the Jewish population in the Levant was polytheistic to a point just after Akhenaten's reign, then it adopted monotheism. Any Jews in Egypt during his reign would have been exposed to monotheism. The migration of the Egyptian Jews to the Levant happened about a century later (c1225 BCE if I recall correctly) which coincides quite nicely with, i.e. preceding the transformation from polytheism to monotheism in Judaism. I am certain there are many published papers - scholarly research - on the topic that would be fascinating to read.

Thank for this video on a subject that has fascinated me since childhood. Just for your information, I just celebrated my 69th birthday. I can offer an explanation regarding Amarna art and its differences from the idealizations that characterized traditional Egyptian art. One of Akhenaten's epithets was "Living in Truth". Therefore, being depicted realistically in art was important to this pharaoh. The art however did change from exaggerating Akhenaten's physical traits in the beginning to a more natural depiction later on. The famous head of Nefertiti is an example of this final phase.
To change the subject a little, I've been currently studying the Zoroastrian religion which I and others believe appeared as early as 1700 BCE. The focus on light in both Akhenaten's faith and that of Zoroaster, or Zarathushtra in the Avestan language, is very interesting. Zoroastrians often pray outdoors in the direction of the sun. And, of course, in the fire temples, they pray towards the fire which is a sacred element of creation representing the god Ahura Mazda's wisdom. The fact that solar worship existed in many religions throughout history shouldn't suprise us as life wouldn't exist on this planet without the sun.
Forgive me for expounding so extensively. Your videos are always intellectually stimulating for me. Plus, I enjoy sharing some the things I've learned in my previous and current research. Cheers!

As indicated in other comments, a follow-up subject would be: "To what extent did mono- or heno-theistic Atenism influence early or proto-Judaism?"
After Akhenaten's death, followers of his 'monotheistic' religion may have been forced to flee...and the next country over is Canaan. Some, including the psychologist Freud, have tried to connect this era to the Exodus narrative. However, Moses was not a historical figure (while his name is similar to that of the earlier Pharaoh Ahmosis I, this may be coincidental) and there is no archeological evidence for the Exodus narrative. This explanation also fails to include the various Canaanite gods (El/Elohim, Ba'al, etc) which play an important role in the Old Testament stories.
Still, Egypt ruled over Canaan during Akhenaten's reign, so presumably Canaanites were strongly exposed to his religion during that time. A henotheistic or monolatrist form of Canaanite religion may thus have formed in Canaan via standard religion syncretism, without the need for any migration per se.
A fascinating topic! Thanks for the video.

I personally think we can rule out the fact that Atenism was henotheistic, consider how in that time the names and records of other gods were wiped and discarded and weren't allowed to be worshipped, he didn't exactly ever deny their existence, and what is the definition of henotheism? The belief that there is more than one deity but only one of them is supreme, the others are worshipped but not to the extent of the supreme one; but then comes monolatriesm, i think this is the more likely, consider how like i said Akhenaten didn't exactly ever deny the existence of the other gods, he just didn't allow it and refrained from worshipping anyone but Aten.
Of course this is just my opinion.

This idea of the Light (Nur) and Truth (Haqq) being emanations of a single reality beyond time and space reminds me of Kabbalah, Esoteric Christianity, Spiritual Shi'ism and Manicheanism... the parallels are obvious. There must be universal truths and tendencies within mankind.

This is actually a fascinating Islamic belief. As Muslims, we don’t believe that Prophet Muhammad began Islam. Islam, isn’t named after him, like christianity and Judaism are derived from particular people. The core Islamic belief is that the one true God, inspired different people from every single nation throughout time. To call to worship, only one God, and to disregard the belief in false idols etc. that’s why Islamially speaking, the core belief of monotheism, has never changed.
“We sent a messenger to every single community, saying, ‘Worship God and shun false gods.’ Among them were some God guided; misguidance took hold of others. So travel through the earth and see what was the fate of those who denied the truth.” Quran 16:36.
“And We did not send any Messenger before you (O Muhammad) but We revealed to him (saying): None has the right to be worshipped but I , so worship Me (alone and none else).” Quran21:25
The word Islam means to submit your will to the will of your Creator. And a Muslim is someone who has submitted their will to the Creator. However, people think it means prophet Mohammad initiated our faith. Which no Muslim believes. It’s apart of the core pillars of the faith to believe God sent thousands of different, inspired men to their people to call to the One true God. There were African prophets, European prophets, Asian prophets etc. And this Pharaoh man could have been one of them.
“There are messengers whose stories We have told you already and others We have not. “ Quran 4:164
God has always inspired certain individuals in every single community with the call to worship the one true creator, to their people. A lot of people wouldn’t follow them and they were shunned from their communities and only had maybe a handful of followers. God tells us why He at one point in time favoured the children of Israel over other peoples this is because from all the messengers & inspired people God sent to their nations, the Israelites were the only ones at the time that actually followed that guidance, that’s why God favoured them and sent them so many miracles and blessings.
“O Children of Israel, recall my blessings upon you and that I [once] favoured you above all other beings.”Quran 2:47
In the Quran, God tells us the prophet Muhammad was the seal of prophethood, after revealing to thousands and thousands for centuries and to every community. The message of one God can sometimes then be found, in some ancient literature.
“Muhammad is not the father of any one of you men; he is God’s Messenger and the seal of the prophets: God knows everything.” Quran33:40
There’s always been one religion. But then it broke down when people deviated from the guidance sent with the messengers. For example, Muslim believe God inspired Jesus and chose him and sent him to His people, bring his people back to the correct path
“He will send him (Jesus) as a messenger to the Children of Israel: “I have come to you with a sign from your Lord: I will make the shape of a bird for you out of clay, then breathe into it and, with God’s permission, it will become a real bird; I will heal the blind and the leper, and bring the dead back to life with God’s permission; I will tell you what you may eat and what you may store up in your houses. There truly is a sign for you in this, if you are believers. I have come to confirm the truth of the Torah which preceded me, and to make some things lawful to you which used to be forbidden. I have come to you with a sign from your Lord. Be mindful of God, obey me: God is my Lord and your Lord, so serve Him- that is a straight path.” Quran 3:49-51
Because the children of Israel, didn’t follow the continuity of God’s guidance and rejected Jesus.
“God said, ‘Jesus, I will take you back and raise you up to Me: I will purify you of the disbelievers. To the Day of Resurrection I will make those who follow you superior to those who disbelieved. Then you will all return to Me and I will judge between you regarding your differences.” Quran 3:55
God inspired certain upright individuals in their communities and entrusted them with calling their people to worship Him alone. Later on, people have taken them as a God instead of the True God who sent them.

Egyptian writer Naguib Mahfouz, who won the Nobel Prize for Literature, wrote a novel about Pharaoh Akhenaten titled "Akhenaten: Dweller in Truth." In it, a man interviews members of Akhenaten's former court to try to find the truth about the late Pharaoh, only to find that each individual has a different viewpoint, a different truth and a different story to tell.

That's really interesting. If I were to let my mind wander, I would imagine that the idea was definitely radical and had positive effects on society, being a God to ALL beings, not just to specific people, and also showing signs of affection to family has benefits to society. I also couldn't help but think that he insisted his body be represented in a more true realistic manner rather than the standard perfect manly body which we know pharaohs who ate well never had... But yes, this will be deemed heresy since the other gods/patron-saints already have a dedicated following

    1. You can see it. That's a one up on pretty much every other god.
    2. It's warmth can be measured and used to our benefit. Another one up on things like the holy spirit.
    3. It's absolutely essential for life on earth.

And this is precisely what the ancient pagan priestclass did.. the mistook, or inverted spiritual truths for the material i.e. believing the earthly sun to be (a) god.
See, people are evidently blinded by their own materialistic mentality, never coming to the truth - that this world is not what it seems [1 John v. 19].

From the Law of One 2.2: “This entity, Akhenaten, became convinced that the vibration of One was the true spiritual vibration and thus decreed the Law of One. However, this entity’s beliefs were accepted by very few. His priests gave lip service only, without the spiritual distortion towards seeking. The peoples continued in their beliefs.”
Akhenaten was taught by Ra that above all gods of religion (ET) stands the One Infinite Creator from which all emerged and to which all return. The One Creator is omnipresent, omnipotent and omniscient.

Correction: read the Bible please. Caanan is Ham's son, inhabited Africa, like Egyptians and Cush. Jews come from Shem. Academics nowadays are profoundly antisemitic: be aware if this. Also, I think that the flood caused great displacement of people, that explains what the Canaanites are doing in a territory that wasn"t originally theirs. That is what Melchitzedek talks about with Abraham. Abraham comes from Shem.

It would be an interesting video, one dedicated to delving into the history of the notion of the monotheistic/polytheistic conceptual pair. As briefly broached here, it seems to me (someone without scholarly research, of course) to be a rather "abrahamic centered" notion, the application of which to many other religious creeds is not without considerable difficulty (take hinduism, for example, as mentioned in another video, or candomblé with its many orixás that are celebrated but that recognizes a single supreme creator).

@@memcrew1 you're correct, the Somali language is the most documented language of the Cushitic branch of the afroasiatic language family, and it's the only Cushitic language that is a formal national language of a sovereign country (Somalia), it's also a national language in Djibouti and a regional state language in Ethiopia
So yh, since Somali is a Cushitic language of the afroasiatic language family, its linguistically related to ancient egyptian which is another branch of the afroasiatic language family..so there will be a lot of similarities in words
Somalia is also considered by many to be the ancient Land of Punt..the pharaohs called this land their ancestral land of origin..so it could be that the similarities between the languages may also be due to having very close ancestral and genetic relationships between ancient Somalis of the land of punt, and ancient Egyptians

I'm not well versed on Put, some biblical description of put/phut says that they were the people of Ethiopia, linking it to the horn of africa ..but a lot of descriptions also link the region to libya or somewhere in north west africa ..apparently phut or put was a son of Ham, the debate is mainly about where this region was..unfortunately there isnt any archeological or scientific evidence to solve this conundrum ..I'd kind of hazard that it may have possibly been either the horn of africa (the land of Punt is very close to the name Phut or Put, and some biblical narratives state that Phut was in Ethiopia), or in north west africa either libya or Mauritania
