- How much furniture can you fit in a U-Haul Cargo Trailer? When we recently picked up a U-Haul to transport furniture from Maine to North Carolina, we weren't exactly sure if we should choose a 6x12 or a 5x8. While you can save a lot of money with a 5x8 it is important to consider how much a 5x8 can handle vs the larger double axle 6x12.
In the end, we were able to fit most of what we wanted to in a 5x8. The 5x8 U-Haul Trailer actually carried more than I expected. At first glance I felt like it was way too small. But the 208 Cubic Feet Capacity proved to be very roomy with a little Tetris. If you plan on brining mattresses however, I would still use a 6x12. The mattress and box spring of a Queen mattress set will utilize approximately half the cargo space (depending on the brand and quality of course).
Tips for Picking the Right U-Haul Trailer:
The 5x8 U-Haul Cargo Trailer is a perfect size for college students heading off to live in a dorm room. They may also consider using a 4x8 if the dorm provides some of the furniture.
If you are moving a long distance you may want to consider the price of replacing your mattress and box spring for the cost of upgrading to a 6x12. Chances are if your mattress and box spring are used you could replace them with something used near your destination. In which case you could easily fit a bed frame with lots of extra furniture in the 5x8 and save on the U-Haul rental, toll fees, and gas mileage.

He got it there by packing everything nice and tight, that maximizes the space which allows you to get everything you need on the truck or trailer unless the truck or trailer is too small.

Thank you. I am thinking of bringing some stuff back to New York from Florida, and I wasn't sure which size to use since I only have a few pieces. I mostly want to bring back some bedroom furniture (bureau and a dresser) and an office chair. I definitely would fit that in the 5 x 8, and now I can see the few items might only need the 4 x8. It was great to see how much you were able to fit!
Moving to Houston, TX this summer and I’ve been struggling to decide between a U-Pack relocube or a U-Haul trailer. We’re selling most of our stuff but want to bring our Queen bed and some other small furniture. Thanks for posting this! We’ll decide go with the cargo trailer, probably the 6x12.

@@nevamontford4914 It just barely fit for me. It's a bit of a trial and error to get it all in properly. It did the job though. I did stuff like tilting the couches to lean onto the dresser and then put the coffee table under the couch as it was hovering over. Stuff like that

That is really unbelievable... you must be a master packer.
U-Haul trailers are bombproof! I have a lot of respect for these things. One of the features I really like on the larger trailers is the hydraulic brake mechanism in the tongue. When you slow down, inertia pushes a hydraulic piston in the tongue, which in turn activates the brakes on the trailer. The only thing I don't like is some of the older trailers leak, if you pass through a heavy rain storm. One other thing: Avoid renting the trailer "one-way," if you can. It'll cost you a lot less if you rent it on a "local use" basis. Lastly, I gotta' say I'm truly impressed with the huge amount of stuff you packed inot that 5' x 8' trailer! PS: My '97 3/4 ton GMC Suburban with the 454 gets 12 mpg empty, or pulling a 26 foot Airstream!

How'd it go? I'm moving from Ohio to Dallas in Dec and am trying to see what all I can bring. I currently have a 3 bed house, but of course I will be downsizing to a 2 bed apt. Planning on taking my bed set (queen) including long dresser, my couch (sectional) and a bunch of small stuff. Worried about my bed and couch fitting.
@@prfctlymprfctbeauty oh man we packed that sucker full. Had a full sized bed (huge head board and side frame. Tons of boxes. In a 2013 Hyundai Tucson. Tried doing the wiring for the trailer myself but I had to have a mechanic hook it up. Only like $100. So I was moving my wife down and it was only her bedroom and a huge closet. A desk and a chair. Packed the Hyundai up to the max and brought the 25lb dog. You can pack it up. Get the balance right. How I balances was just common sense no crazy math or science. Way I tested it was as I was loading if I could lift the hitch (about when it was full) then I felt good because the tongue rating is about 350? I believe. As your loading it will be impossible to lift cause the weight is towards the back. So in my opinion, don’t worry about weight worry about distribution and picking smart. It’ll carry what you need. I did only go about 55-60 because my wife is pregnant and at the end of the day I wasn’t in a huge rush and didn’t need to kill us. Stopping was good also. Nothing intense. Hopefully that better helps you understand the capacity of it. Lemme know if you got any more questions.
