Awesome locomotive and excellent review! But if you're going to pull heavy consists with this or any Athearn locomotive, might be a good idea to swap out the McHenry couplers for Kadees (either the standard no. 5 or the no. 158 "scale head" for a more prototypical appearance) as the McHenry couplers are prone to failing when put under high stress situations for extended periods of time, I found that out the hard way a little over 2 years ago!
Pretty good video. For better low speed operation I first adjust CV 215 .. Changing CV 3 and cv 216 will get you the low speed character your looking for.
This is a spectacular diesel model, I am interested in the dd40 diesel model as I am a big Union Pacific rr fan, I would like to own a locomotive equipped with the tsunami2 decoder as I have heard a great amount of positive feedback about the tsunami2 sound- Tom.
I don't have one of those. I did once, but it was the older Bachmann toy version. Never been a big UP fan, but I like that locomotive. I'd probably run it with my SP and ATSF power.
Good review ! I have the Athearn Genesis 6910 with Tsunami2 Sound but I can't test it out because I don't have a layout. It is already nice to watch it on a piece of track in my showcase. I am wondering does this locomotive have cab lights ?? If Yes what function key would it be ? The user manual doesn't mention anything about cab lights. Cheers, Jan, Australia
@@DoctorHobby Thanks ! I saw another review over the 6915 and that one has cab lights albeit it was the only DDA40X I saw with cab lights on RUclips. It may depend on the road number you have. Mine is probably the same as yours with a cab in darkness.
@@DoctorHobby Ah, I was just asking cause Tsunami 2 equipped Athearn models usually don't lurch like that, at least the ones I have. I think some sort of CV adjustment will work.
I am in love with Union Pacific locomotives. These are my favourites.
What a beast! Great review Bruce!
Definitely an incredible monster of a model and prototype, right? Thank you so very much!
I love your reviews!
Thank yo so kindly! More to come!
Super awesome. I got one too. Haven't gotten past just listening to it start up yet though.
Even the startup is pretty awesomely mesmerizing.. love the two-stroke diesel sound! Take care and have fun with it when you finally do run it!
@@DoctorHobby Totally agree. Their sd90mac also has a memorable operational sound.
Awesome Review!!!!!
Thank you, so very much!

That’s great advice! Thank you!
@@DoctorHobby no problem!
In high speeds, you still get that typical Athearn "coffee grinder" sound
I guess it's difficult for these leopards to totally change their spots..
Nice review, that thing is a BEAST!!!
Thank you tons! It is a kaiju supreme, that’s for sure!
@@DoctorHobby I've contemplated grabbing one but just wasn't sure on how it would look on the turns, love that part about your review! good stuff
Did you decide the overhang was acceptable? Lol.. definitely couldn’t allow rail fans to get that close if the turns were that tight in real life
@@DoctorHobby No sure yet, my outside loop is around 32 ish I think, I might grab one, it's just such a beast!
You’ll be well off! Go and get it!
It looks like there is a piece of clear plastic (headlight lens?) stuck under the shell @4:35

I meant out of the box… I’ll have a separate video describing how to get Tsunamis to have better low speed characteristics later

Thank you for your comment! I think you’ll like this model a lot if you want a quality locomotive for your layout.

I'm not a huge UP fan, either, but it just seemed.. necessary?? to have one of these on the track..
How can i put working fans in this and smoke
That’ll take a lot of effort. Are you sure you want to attempt it?
Yes I would love.to make this a different, and more. Fun I did seen someone, put a working fanand canon&company with a pedometer

Thanks for writing! Mine does not have can lights from what i was able to tell--although for this beast, maybe it would actually be "cab floodlights?"

is that Bachmann easy track in this video of the UP DD40AX?
Yes it is! All my non -Marklin track is Bachmann EZ Track
I am waitting on mines with the New Bicentennial sound and caboose
Mine is on order, too!
Is your controller on 128 speed step mode?
All the way!
