  • Went up and explored the amazing Big Horn Mine with my buddies Austin, Daniel and Karissa. Big thanks to them for making this explore possible. This mine was started in 1895 when Tom Vincent came across a large quartz vein while hunting Big Horn sheep, hence the name of the mine. Quite a few very cool features inside and outside of the mine including square set timbering, cribbing, room and pillar method mining, ladders, ore chutes and a lot more! After the mine we headed to Vincent's cabin which he lived in for decades and still has a few artifacts scattered around the site. Contrary to what I said in the video, the mill was constructed sometime in the early 1900's and not the late 1800's. Hope you enjoy and in advance thanks for watching!

    For anyone who wants to explore caves/mine shafts like this, I always recommend bringing glow sticks or some item to indicate where you came from so you don't get lost. That's what I did and it definitely helped. It's super easy to get disoriented and lost while in an enclosed space like a mine.

    The boiler in the beginning is actually called an accumulater for compressed air for the drills. Spectacular cribbing and timbering in that mine. Great work guys and have fun in your next adventure.

    I did this back in 2012 with some friends. Explored pretty deep into the mine and saw some amazing things. I went back a few years later with another group of friends and discovered one of the routes I took appeared to have been caved in by rocks. It had me questioning if it was the same route. I tried to crawl through but deem it unsafe. I'm glad I got to experience this amazing piece of history. thanks for the vid! Helped me re-live that experience

    Yeah the air tanks are so drills have air to draw from; they draw out the air of "just pipes"

    So much fun watching this exploration. I grew up on the other side of the mountain in the Covina area and spent some time exploring Big Horn. That was in the late 70’s to early 80’s. So much of it is still intact and the way I remember. And there was little graffiti back then, and none in the mine. I was fortunate to do a bit of exploring like you and I loved it. I’m in Washington now and there isn’t much mine exploration to be had up here so I’m thankful to have come across your channel and I’ve subscribed and look forward to watching more. Thanks for your efforts!

    I really enjoy your adventures into these mines. I personally am too uneasy exploring old mines but love to watch your videos. I'm amazed at the amount of graffiti on the walls of this mine. Being in Colorado, there are a lot of abandoned mines in the state, but most have collapsed and many others have had their entrances closed off. Keep up the good work and be safe, my friend.

    Most of the mines up there have been blown shut by the forest service. Search and rescue used to have to pull idiots out of these mines. A few people have died in them. Always bring a spool of strong string like surveyor's cord to follow back out of the bigger mines

    Wow, absolutely gorgeous timbering and tunnels in this mine. A mine that glitters too - cool! I loved seeing the old buildings outside in the beginning footage. Shame about the graffiti but everything still seems well intact. Judging by the outside surroundings, this looks like it could be in Alpine County in Northern CA.

    • @WesternMineDetective
      @WesternMineDetective  3 года назад +2

      Hey Gina, loved the timbering in this one it was my favorite part. And yeah that calcite sure was glittery. The mill is in alright shape, it's kind of on the verge of falling off the side of that mountainside. Yeah it's very high elevation, surprisingly this is out here in southern Cali. It's a very unique spot. Thanks for watching!

      Biggest mine I've been to is the one where we rode the timber car on the 765 level. And those metal straps were for securing the back of the mine. They act as support so that the mine is less prone to collapse.

    I use to sluice and pan on the East Fork in the 90’s, finally stopped going due to the complete disrespect of nature by people, everything from graffiti on rocks, to giant piles of trash, ladies washing diapers in the stream just upstream from people in the river, to gang bangers partying all night long at camp spots, then the state enacted the double taxation wilderness pass act so you have to pay to park .. that was the last straw. The graffiti on the Big Horn is just maddening 😡

For example lets start with the square set timbering, accumulators, mill site, the view, the sparkly calcite, etc. The list can go on and on. Thanks for watching.
