A couple of season's ago Liverpool went through a tough season, injuries to key players. They've obviously bounced back. It happens, ridiculous red cards, injuries, poor player form, have really hurt their campaign. The fact that they still sit in second place is amazing. This is not entirely Arteta's fault, although the lack of transfer business in the summer lies with him and and the club.

Morning Charles! On transfers, I’m not completely sold on Kvara as you both are but I can understand his appeal (and for the price). However someone that hasn’t been mentioned who I’d want, especially if Kvara gets his move to PSG, is Bradley Barcola. I think he’s an exceptional winger, explosive in 1v1 situations, never afraid to take on a man, but also has that ‘pausa’ that wingers need to control possession and sustain attacks. Young, low wages…he ticks all the boxes! On our transfer strategy though - the feeling on the way home from the Newcastle game was palpable amongst the fans and of course I share the frustration. But I don’t think that our inability to transform the attack in recent windows is in any way down to Arteta. He’s clearly wanted attackers - Raphinha a couple of seasons ago, Mudryk, Vlahovic, Sesko…it’s clear Arteta wants the finishing piece to the attack but ultimately it then is down to the board and the sporting directors to get the job done.
As someone that has watched Nico Williams quite a bit, I can try to explain a bit why so many teams like him: Nico Williams is basically the prototype of the perfect modern winger, he is incredible at progressing the ball. Dribbles with both feet, prefect technique and rarely loses the ball, Arsenal progresses the ball a lot through the wings and with Nico there he could definetly help. Given the current Mikel's preferred playstyle, I think he wants to have 2 wide wingers that are able to create plays in the pockets of space in the left and right of the box for crosses and cutbacks. It severely limits the danger spaces where the other team can get the ball or what they can do. I can see Mikel wanting to get his hands on Nico to mold him and help him improve, his goal scoring I don't see improving too much, I'd be surprised if he ever score 15 PL goals, but having 20 assists is very much possible. Having Nic oand Saka would give Arsenal 2 amazing wide playmakers. Now, I would be a taken back if Arsenal does not acquire alongside Nico a proper ST like Sesko, Gyokores, Vlahovic, I don't see the output of the team improving with only Nico coming in. The reason why we get angry when we go on bad runs of form isn’t because “we’re used to winning so many games” it’s because when we go on these runs we do them at the most crucial parts of the season. We need to start being braver and take our chances when they come !

The way so many teams set up against us is also a big factor. It is really hard to play against a low or mid block and we don't have the players to break it down and by having a really slow transition any time the opposition comes out we give then plenty of time to set up the defence again,

We tried to spend €100m on Mudryk, thinks €60m release clause and high wages for Nico is stumbling block but won't move to €80m Kvaratskhelia who will demand a sensible wage. Ornstein reported that Liverpool and Chelsea, who has many wingers already, is also interested in Kvaratskhelia so it really puzzles me why Arsenal, who are in need of winger, aren't in the mix. Nice watch from Charles and James. People complain a lot about teams playing a low block against us most times, contrary to most people, I think it's intentional, i think Arteta prefers it that way. I mean, the guy has shown himself to be very risk averse. To his mind, as long as we have the ball in the opponent's half, they can't score. I feel it's one of the reasons why we rarely ever score goals from transition or try to shoot from distance. It usually works until it doesn't. Getting an early goal always helps. But when it becomes laborous, that's where it gets tedious to watch, where we can play for a match for 3 days and once we cant score from set pieces, then we cant score at all. When all players do a particular thing for too long, it can just be coincidence, it has to be an instruction. When you transition, wait at the edge of the box for the opponent to het back in shape so that you dont risk losing possession, then we can start passing and manipulating space to see if we can execute an eye-of-needle pass or combination through which we may score. That's textbook Arsenal play right now.
Last season we were pretty lucky with injuries as Saka, Saliba, Rice, Gabriel etc were available almost all the time. Yet we didn’t win a single thing.

injury luck is definitely a factor I wrote our chances off quite early on for this season because of injuries but man city and Liverpool have better squad depth i think you can argue better depth could see you win a drawn game that may be the difference

I would be more worried about our style of play than who we buy. You can pretty much plug any player into Arteta's perfered slow build up high possession style that has our players running into 9 man brick walls, and they will struggle. Like last season, we were struggling playing this style. As soon as Arteta abandoned it, we started scoring by the bucket load like the whole season before. We set club records for goals with these same players.
I feel arteta is a great coach but not a great manager....yet. The whole process to trust in now seems it's him learning to manage new situations due to lack of experience. I can only hope he can learn fast without a stubborn mindset because this is not on the players.

I agree 100%. Arsenal under Arteta have always had a problem with chance creation and finishing. Sometimes it's a bit understated but it has always been there. Luck has nothing to do with. The best aspects of Arsenal's game that has improved tremendously under Arteta is our defence, out of ball setup and general control. I won't put attack in the same breath though.

Tierney’s contract is running out this summer. He has no value. Zinchenko is probably worth $10-$15m at this point.

Luck is a factor. Compare Arsenal's injuries, dodgy red cards, illness to Liverpool's. But the squad is thin and that needs to be addressed

I honestly think Arteta is keeping a tight lip also because there might be struggles internally with accessing the market. Just a hunch. Weather it is fund availability or hesitation to spend with summer window in sight, is hard to determine for any of us. Interesting stage in Arteta's career at Arsenal. He has been amazing, but he could decide he needs to move on as well. Club needs to support Arteta.

if we were willing to spend £80m on an unproven mudryk, then arteta and kse have no excuses this january. there are so many forwards available right now who would instantly be upgrades on the mediocrity we currently have up front. Kvara is a no brainer, but if not him then go all in for cunha.

Charles I think the Kvaratskelia situation will tell us a lot about the ambition at Arsenal. They have been saying this window is about responding to opportunities and they will only move if there is quality. Well that’s a player we know they like, it’s a clear opportunity and now let’s see if they react. If they don’t then I think all the stuff about being reactive was probably just words.

injury luck is definitely a factor I wrote our chances off quite early on for this season because of injuries but man city and Liverpool have better squad depth i think you can argue better depth could see you win a drawn game that may be the difference

I’m wondering why you and James didn’t have victor Gyokeres as a reasonable January transfer? His release clause is just 63m pounds. I feel like we could get him and kravatskella and still be fine with ffp. Then ate attack would be complete for the next five plus years.
I would be more worried about our style of play than who we buy. You can pretty much plug any player into Arteta's perfered slow build up high possession style that has our players running into 9 man brick walls, and they will struggle. Like last season, we were struggling playing this style. As soon as Arteta abandoned it, we started scoring by the bucket load like the whole season before. We set club records for goals with these same players.
I feel arteta is a great coach but not a great manager....yet. The whole process to trust in now seems it's him learning to manage new situations due to lack of experience. I can only hope he can learn fast without a stubborn mindset because this is not on the players.
No point in looking at any of the options you’ve suggested because we know fine well we’ll end up with a backup GK, CB and LB. Not in January but in the summer.
Lost faith in the hierarchy doing what the club needs to progress to the highest level. The fans will turn and the club will regress.

Interesting reports that Edu left because of Areta’s increasing influence. I don’t really rate Edu and especially his summer transfer window. So much was left not done. The concern is that we need ceiling raising signings not floor raising signings and apart from Rice we’re famous for either spending a lot and getting it wrong or buying players who don’t raise the bar enough. The Napoli winger is symptomatic of this, we don’t appear to be in the conversation whereas Chelsea, Liverpool and PSG are. In January Arsenal need to honour and drop €100m on Zubimendi and Williams.

Generally most journalists are reporting a reluctance of the club to spend much this month. Do you think its tactics from the club to leak those reports, or do you think they genuinely intend to wait till the summer despite our struggles? It would be infuriating given the market opportunities like Kvara, our injuries, and the abismal summer business we had.

Enough of this “Arsenal would win this game 9/10” argument. It doesn’t make any sense. We’ve had enough of a sample size this season already to know that this is no longer just down to luck.
We have an attack problem and really need to add more fire power. Frankly, I think we also have attacking midfield problems. Odegaard is good on his day but I feel like he slows the game too much and under hits so many passes. I don’t know how many times he took an extra turn or step and let the opposition defense get back in shape…
I agree 100%. Arsenal under Arteta have always had a problem with chance creation and finishing. Sometimes it's a bit understated but it has always been there. Luck has nothing to do with. The best aspects of Arsenal's game that has improved tremendously under Arteta is our defence, out of ball setup and general control. I won't put attack in the same breath though.
