Always funny when people describe Reimu as "cute" when she's more like an alcoholic divine cop who beats everyone up randomly whenever something happens (which is why she's great)

As someone who's been into Touhou for over 4 years, it's always great and appreciated to see someone get into and tell others about it. Touhou is such an interesting series, it's insanely popular in Japan to the point of everybody knowing about it, yet there is hardly any presence of it in the West. Which is a shame, as Touhou is one of the very few series you can feel the passion and thought it's creator puts into. The way stories connect to each other makes you feel very satisfied, be it playing the games or reading the mangas. It's also an incredible feat that ZUN managed to make near 180 characters, yet each one of them are unique and memorable with how they act and interact with others. Reimu's easygoing yet at the same time serious nature, Marisa's snarky and confident personality, Youmu's intimidating acts to cover up her sillines and many more. And the music... Oh GOD the MUSIC! There is literally no objectively bad song in Touhou, and that is even more impressive when you count in the fact that there is over *700* songs in the series, made by *ONE. SINGLE. PERSON!* It's mind boggling how a man who started making games because the kind of game he wanted to play wasn't on the market was and still is making not only incredibly fun and rewarding games, but make music that would rival those of AAA games. The variety of feelings they give is incredibly wide too. You want a calming song? There is "Tomorrow will be Special; Yesterday was Not". Or a song that is playful? "Futatsuiwa from Sado" is right up your ally. For those who want mysterious/scary songs, there is "Merry Magician". Long story short, if you want to listen to a song with any kind of feelings, it most probably is within Touhou. I know it's been a pretty long post, but it's not everyday one gets to talk about probably the most underrated gem that is Touhou. It's great to have you in the community, and hopefully you'll keep on enjoying Touhou. And lastly, thanks to anyone who decided to read me fanboying about Touhou for ungodly lenghts. Keep on enjoying this wonderful series, and hopefully those who are just learning about Touhou will end up enjoying it as much as I do.
You're not kidding about being under-acknowledged in the west. Several years ago, after hearing the game mentioned here and there like some kind of reoccuring joke on the internet, I decided to actually check out the games. Only to find I couldn't actually get any of them, because the few sources I could find wouldn't even run on American Windows (either that, or were untranslated, I forget which). I gave up at that point. What I I only partially understood until now was it's fan-driven nature. I knew there were the main games, but my biggest source of the games was from a bunch of platformers done by a Mario youtuber named Raocow. I wasn't sure exactly what these games were to the main series, in part because there seemed to be an awful lot of them to be just fan games, which I thought was far too much for any series. But Gaijins explanation of doujin and doujinshi answered A LOT of questions that have been floating in the back of my head for ages, both in general, and with regard to the Touhou Project. I don't have time to go looking into the series more than what Gaijin is going to do, but I'm looking forward to his contribution to my knowledge on the subject.
I’m just now getting into touhou & it’s pretty fun but I feel so isolated cuz it’s so small over in the west. Is there anything I can do to get more involved with touhou?
Touhou Project. Otherwise known as “1 Asian man who regularly drinks his body weight in beer and became a God that created a world of pure fantasy of endless possibilities.” Also man, it’s weird seeing you make a video of Touhou of all things and that your daughter got you tumbling down the rabbit hole. This is going to be some fun videos to watch.
@Demon Core-kun He's still more popular internationally. If each country had their own smash ballot for Nintendo to pick characters from then Reimu might have a chance in Japan, but not in the rest of the world.
@@officialdeath278 I heard someone thar to be in Smash, the game where the intended character MUST BE MAINSTREAM and have official games in Nintendo ports.So.....yeah.
@@explosivemodesonicmauricet1597 Add the fact that ZUN doesn't want companies like Nintendo taking advantage of the doujin community with copyright claims and there's a slim chance of there ever being a Touhou themed DLC.
I’ve often caught glimpses of the “Touhou Project” name during a couple of the song listings through a rhythm game titled Groove Coaster. Whilst I picked this for interest in the etymology of the name on some song pack. I very much appreciate this very somewhat random topic to cover and thanks to that I’m off to see more of this series on my own. Thanks and off I go! ^_^
This makes me extremely happy. I've been a long time fan of touhou, and to see you, someone who's helped me learn about monster hunter through videos, make a video about my favorite series of games is just delightful.
Both touhou and monster hunter are some of my favorite series, they are somewhat special to me. It's always great to see this wonderfull series getting love and new fans
Touhou has something no big corporate franchise can replicate: raw passion. Also, Youmu is best girl and top tier in Soku. I'm glad I made my most recent MHW profile her. Blossom armor works perfectly!
I've been making Youmu my character for 4U, Generations and World so reading this was super cool lol Mixed and matched Blossom and Brigade Layered Armour to get the look and am now learning how to Long Sword to really perfect the "cosplay"
syaondri Actually, intellectual property protection exists for Touhou. It’s just that ZUN is very lax about it provided that you don’t use it for commercial purposes.
Touhou has contributed a lot to the online community (Already dead - Lil Boom being the latest example) but has not received credit for even half of their effort. I really do appreciate your help introducing touhou to the western communities.
amazingly, 5 months ago after hearing that the song "already dead" was a basically stolen song, I went searching for the original song. Not too long until I found the original (the one that already dead was taking audio from). Long story short that is basically how I got into Touhou about 6 months ago when I forced myself to play it (I loved the bullet hell games very much.) Many of the time, when searching for original versions of the songs I didn't investigate any further to find where it originally rooted from and lost interest, so I never was able to find the songs that came from the bullet hell game itself (for example, Night of Nights) and it amazes me how so many songs that came from touhou never had much people looking for and getting more of a fanbase. But thats for the better because touhou may have more of a toxic community lma TLDR; i got into toho becus funy yuka song and uh fuc the fucging the good song yeah the ngiht of night and the bad apl they not mak people get into tohou thy just like th sogn
1. Got into the series about 10 years ago because a few of my friends were very fond of it. 2. Learned about the characters through listening to the music and playing Touhoumon (a pokémon rom hack). 3. Utsuho Reiuji is easily my favourite character. 4. Become Nuclear Physicist. 5. Hunt Critical Brachydios while blasting a playlist of Solar Sect of Mystic Wisdom ~ nuclear fusion remixes.
Glad to see that you’ve become a fan of Touhou! While it’s never too late to discover Touhou, I wish you had back around 2010-11 when its popularity surged at a pretty rapid pace. There were tons of events, especially concerts being set up monthly, all kinds of goods you can imagine get made and you could almost always see Touhou-related things everywhere. I could often see Touhou itasha, adverts on light posts, characters used to promote shops and cafes, etc. A lot of shops like Comic Zin and Animate also left out books where customers can draw anything and left comments, in which all the books were filled with just Touhou art. Even when I went out to other places, I still see traces of Touhou like on the ema in shrines. Lots of really talented indie groups also debut during that time and went on to produce a lot of incredible work that inspired other groups to continue and add to the legacy of Touhou. But after other crazes like Kantai Collection came along, its popularity dropped rather sharply but still remains relevant to these days. The past few years I visited Japan, the amount of Touhou goods that used to flood many shops were gone... I remember just walking down a random street and bought a Mokou hand warmer on a whim. But now I had to really look to find Touhou goods outside of events and some places simply stopped selling Touhou goods altogether. While it may not be at its peak anymore, it’s still very, very popular and relevant like I’ve previously mentioned. I’m glad that ZUN decided to officially distribute his game outside of Japan via Steam and so more people could discover and officially support the series. I’m also happy that the new mobile game also helped to gain new fans like it did you and your daughter! It would be wonderful, and a joy to watch, if you could do videos on Touhou on a regular basis alongside Monster Hunter. There are so many things to cover and show, heck, I would love to see you do an analysis, a look into on each character, their design, story, music, impact on fandom, etc. There are so many interesting things to talk about!
Finally an up-to-date "what is Touhou?" video without any nonsense! Looking forward to more of this video series. Oh, my favorite character is the oblivious mastermind, Yuyuko~
Touhou was probably one of the most important media I got into. because of it I made some of my best online friends, which in turn became some of my best IRL friends. Because of that so much of my life has changed in the last decade and for the better. Hell, it's because of the friends I got to know through Touhou that I got introduced to Monster Hunter, so yeah. I have to thank this series for a lot even if I haven't consumed a lot of it for a while now. Glad to see that there are still a lot of fans around!
Definitely the Omen trilogy with Devil of Decline in particular. The post-game bosses really set a standard that no other RPG comes close to in terms of difficulty. Nightmare of Rebellion is unique in that every random battle is difficult enough to be a game over if you aren't prepared.
I enjoyed Labyrinth of Touhou 2. while the maps werent as graphically eyecatching as other games, the games was expansive enough to keep you roaming through the tree for hours. there's also a slew of achievements, equipment, and characters to get within the game and since you dont necessarily lose anything for dying, its casual friendly. Difficulty wise there are certain points where it ramps up (mainly at start, main plot, & some side bosses depending on team comp) but once your comfortable with your team you can do serious work through the laby. There's also a +disk but I cant say much about it...havent finished it
One thing I want to add is how I love his names for things. Stages, songs, and spells. I mean listen to some of these. Hopeless Masquerade, Night Sakura of Dead Spirits, A Starry Sky of Small Desires, Suppression "Super-Ego". I mean damn, all of those can really speak to a person before you even hear the music attached.
Koishi's spellcards are based of psychology and stuffs like that. Her theme Hartmann's Youkai Girl is based off the real person, Eduard von Hartmann or Heinz Hartmann for her spellcard reference to ego psychology
@@HyperVanilo Which even make sense for her. She would have a super-ego suppressed because society no longer sees or interacts with her. Being locked in her own subconsious and all.
To be honest, I'm much more interested in the "fan" content than the official releases. The 2D fighting games from Twilight Frontier (Scarlet Weather Rhapsody, Immaterial and Missing Power, etc.) are essentially how I got into the series. I'd also recommend reading the series of doujinshi (non-lewd, of course) from Tohonifun, as they give a lot of backstory to the characters and have some interesting interactions (I like the "Yukari vs. Ran" series, in particular).
I stumbled upon Touhou when I was looking for erotic manga, not gonna lie. (really good stuff btw lol) But that genuinely did spark an interest in me and then I came across all the fan music on RUclips, I absolutely fell in love. People that made their own music based on the Touhou game tracks and are actually able to sell it. So many people that even came together and formed legit bands. I really love Foreground Eclipse (sadly disbanded), ShibayanRecords and FELT if someone wants to know what I listen to.
For me it was FELT that introduced me to it. RUclips recommended me Shaya Kagi's upload of Lost in the Abyss, after which I listened to Puppet in the Dark, Flower Flag (unplugged), and so on until I decided it was time to start the actual games.
I love touhou! My favorite character is ran yakumo, her soundtrack just really stuck with me. I've played a few spinoffs on the switch as well as touhouvania (which is actually how I was introduced to the series ive been going back abd playing the main titles but i really suck at bullet hell games haha)
Touhou is a series that does and will always make me smile, having been a fan of the series for over 10 years I hold Touhou in a special place in my heart. The music, simplistic gameplay, characters and fanworks (yeah the lewd too), all too beautiful to ever forget. Also, Scarlet Devil Mansion gang fans rise
Thank you for helping raise awareness of this amazing series. Zun creates works of passion and it shows in his music and characters. Might I recommend looking at MinusT's channel as they have been rendering iconic fights in full 3D and it really shows how Danmaku is an art. I'm basic, Alice, Marisa and Sakuya are my fan favorites though it's hard to find any characters I dislike.
Very informative!! I discovered Bad Apple back in middle school and was intrigued by the characters and the world, but I thought Touhou was a show that got dropped/never completed so I was disappointed when I couldn't find much animated material. Now I know what it really is! :D
I had heard about Touhou lots of times, but anytime I tried to look into what the hell it actually was, google searches usually only confused me more due to how much of it is out there in such a massive variety of genres. Thanks for making this extremy clear video Gaijin, since now I'm finally in the know LOL
I love this video, really keeps the RUclips community alive again and everyone is happy. Favourite characters? Mine is probably Sumireko - her character explains the stereotype for girl teenagers well, i like it lol.
I got into Touhou awhile ago, and have played almost every game that has come out, except for the very original 5. I was drawn into it because I had never seen anything like it at the time, the idea of dodging thousands of bullets and the great music and as you said likeable characters really made it appealing. Great video gaijinhunter, very informative as always! #Reimu4smash!
It is so wonderful to see people still getting into Touhou project after all these years....... I got into Touhou when I was 12 years old, so in about ~2008, and it was very beloved in old anime forums.......... any snipet of content we managed to get out of Japan on it was a huge event, older people on the forums would go out to Japan and buy and record stuff from doujin events to share with us and it was so fun............. Around the time Ten Desires came out I started to fall off the fandom and move on to other things, moved off old forums and into the new era of social media. But I always had a fondness for Touhou and would be excited when people brought it up or I saw reference to it. And then this past year, I decided to try playing Touhou games again (I was always an Easy mode player lol), and now I'm rapidly improving!!! It just astonishes me, that over a decade after I was deep in the Touhou hype, the series and the fandom is still going strong, and gaining more and more love and attention as time goes by....... Touhou is truly a cultural landmark and I hope that even when ZUN someday puts the series to rest it continues to live in the hearts and minds of the people who got to experience it.
I still haven't played the games or really delved into the world, but my first "experience" that introduced me to it was, and I'm not kidding, the McRoll'd video.
That was my first experience with the music as well when I realized the music was great and didn't realize where it had come from til years later. Also, my first first experience was a friend showing me footage but I had forgotten about it. I still have never played a game but I did purchase RichaadEB's Bullet Hell album
That Bad Apple Shadow animation video introduced me to touhou. Then I watched some fan anime episodes, looked up the games, who ZUN is and ther stories. I also often came across various fanart on sites like pixiv or the boorus. I started to get a bit into the music through watching japanese internet culture meme videos between 2004 and 2010 on niconico and various flash sites (learned about vocaloid there aswell). Truly an amazing time! Personally I'm not good with bullet hell games, so I never really got into the games itself, but I surely enjoy the music, the characters and the lore! It's just that without speaking or reading japanese, I will never be able to get into it the same way a japanese person can do.
I was introduced to touhou through the doujin music part of the fandom. You get some quite unique stuff coming from the circles (I’m looking at you, IOSYS) my personal favourites are shinrabansho and akatsuki records though.
ZUN is a workaholic beast. Probably one of the most tedious part of his work goes unappreciated, the bits and pieces of lore he brings up from either game characters, incidents or events are often pretty obscure folklore stuff even by Japanese standard...and he makes something already interesting into something captivating. His spin on Saigyō Hōshi, the buddhist poet, and then going on to create Perfect Cherry blossom about a Youkai tree that invites people to death for example. The cannon mangas are filled with references to ancient Japanese cultural lore which makes me really look up to the guy if only for his historical passion but he also does game programming which end up being very fun games, music that have melodies celebrated by renowned orchestras....and even his original artstyle has a really odd charming appeal that even though at first made people laugh, ended up being its own thing. Last thing of note, this guy is the embodiment of Indie gaming....he couldve sold the rights to his IP and become much richer but instead prefers to control his brand so it evolves along his original view of the project.
I agree, he is a genius who works super hard in research. Even the Oni have amazingly obscure references to mythology, you can tell he does a lot of research but always has his own unique spin on it. I love him, he is amazing.
It's a series I've always meant to get into, as I do like some shmups and bullet hell games (a friend introduced me to Ikaruga, Mars Matrix, Psyvariar, and Chaos Field years ago). I have one of the games on my Steam wishlist, and I'll get it at some point maybe when I've finally whittled down my backlog of games, heh. Thanks for adding more background on the series!
Epic Video, very informative, Touhou has been a part of my life for the last 12 years, and its still awesome! Btw if you want to hear Touhou music played by a live orchestra of a professional tier there is a youtube channel called "Active NEETs" that does Touhou music and other games too.
My first discovery of touhou was when I started getting into anime in middle school. I found a PV called "The Brilliant Star Rocket" and became obsessed with figuring out what anime it came from. Turns out it was a game series and I downloaded Perfect Cherry Blossom from a torrent. It has been a decade and I still love the series and inspired by its creator
I liked the informative feel of this video. I've heard about Touhou before, but didn't really knew the story behind. Thanks to you, now I know more about what Doujin is as well ! ^^ Great stuff, you should make more video of this kind.
Been watching this channel for years to get monster hunter info, imagine my surprise when I discovered TouHou, searched it on YT and this was the first result.
Cool to know people are still getting into the series even now. I got into it around the release of Touhou 8 when my friend showed me 6, 7 and 8 on his PC and have been addicted since. Oh and my favourites have to be Marisa and Suika. I see you're a man of culture too, mister Suika fan.
I've been a fan for almost 10 years thanks to the music ! And then the games. I may not participate in the fandom but I enjoy the fanart a lot and a few years back got to meet irl friends that enjoys the franchise as well
Thank you for making this video, this explains Touhou scene well. I got into Touhou around 2014, when I heard Bad Apple and then thought that I would try the game it was based on. So my first time playing Touhou is one of the old games, before going to the modern ones. My favorite character is the Ghost Princess Yuyuko Saigyouji.
Years back I only knew of a few of the memes, but what solidified Touhou as one of my favorite fandoms (despite not yet having beaten any game on normal) is the music. My favorite character has to be Satori. I love her theme and her mimic gimmick.
Gaijin went from Monster Hunter to Youkai Hunter ZUN has only one weakness as a game creator. The dude can't draw boobs. Every girl is flat as a pancake. 4:15 It's like the Dark Souls of Touhou I actually enjoy reading non-H doujins. I remember seeing a doujin that was a crossover of Idolm@ster and Fist of the North Star, where the idols were all muscular and stuff. Also, a Kemono Friends × Battle Tendency one, where the girls made friends with Ultimate Kars. Doujins are really entertaining. For certain, my girls are Patchouli and Koakuma.
Music was how I first found Touhou. I don't play any of the games, but damn, the remixes that this franchise inspires are bloody awesome and in all kinds of genres.
Fun fact, smooth mcgroove got me started on my dive into the madness that is touhou~ and U.N.Owen was her? Was my first song I learned on the piano! (Still not very good but it still pushed me to try it and to draw again!)
Great video. I've been a Touhou fan since I first saw the U.N.Owen a cappella version of SmoothMcGroove. I didn't know that ZUN actually made music first and stages later but it honestly makes too much sense now. Thanks for letting me appreciate this series in a whole new point of view once again.
Many thanks! I've known about TouHou; but at the same time, nothing at all. Now I have a solid launching platform to explore or interact with the series moving forward.
EastNewSound introduced me to Touhou, they got great songs dedicated to the franchise. A friend showed me the fan made anime when it was only 2 episodes old.
i actually named my daughter after the black and white magician being marisa kirisame and i do hope she grows up as tenacious and hardworking as marisa
Thank you for the great introduction, learned a lot, have been seeing Touhou a lot for years but never sat down and actually investigated what it was until now.
I found out about Touhou thanks to the internet and I consider it as one of the most representative cultural phenomenon from Japan, due to the fact that it represents the Japanese collective culture.
It's one of those things I'd been putting off looking into for a long time, as I like the way it works and I like the character designs. The music actually broke that procrastination; I'll be looking for Touhou CDs at the next con.
I had no idea how big this whole franchise actually was until I saw this video. Thanks a lot! I'll definitely get into the games and the rest at some point.
I have a friend that's a massive Touhou fan and we met in middle school, around freshman year I played around with the series myself and immediately fell in love with it. The music is what really pushed me to try it and I played Touhou 6-8 a ridiculous amount. 11 is my absolute favorite one, although it's way too hard for me. I've desperately wanted to come back to the series ever since my PC broke.
If you’re going to cover more Touhou, you certainly got a lot of content to cover. I approve of this. Also, can we get some promotional materials for World?
Touhou is my favorite independent video game series with its awesome music, cute and beautiful characters with quirky personalities and mystical Japanese themes. The games are hard but fun to play and what makes Touhou even more enjoyable is the eclectic fanmade stuff.

Glad to have you on board the Touhou Train, you won't regret this ride.
alright, 2 years later i have to know, how do you feel about touhou now
This makes me extremely happy. I've been a long time fan of touhou, and to see you, someone who's helped me learn about monster hunter through videos, make a video about my favorite series of games is just delightful.
BRO. WHAT? Out of all things, I never expected Touhou to show up on here.
Both touhou and monster hunter are some of my favorite series, they are somewhat special to me. It's always great to see this wonderfull series getting love and new fans
Yeah! For me they literally are, my brother bothers me on why I dont buy new games and its because these are my favorite
Touhou has something no big corporate franchise can replicate: raw passion.
Also, Youmu is best girl and top tier in Soku. I'm glad I made my most recent MHW profile her. Blossom armor works perfectly!
I've been making Youmu my character for 4U, Generations and World so reading this was super cool lol

Don't blame you, Youmu is so cool Ngl

I would say Sakuya for best girl, everyone has their preferences

Well I wouldn't call it bad.
We call it passion
Like Sanae Chan Ga Motosobareru and the Atonement Joon and Shion Lewd Mangas

Most of the guys here were introduced to touhou because of that.

It's called hentail and it's art
Touhou has contributed a lot to the online community (Already dead - Lil Boom being the latest example) but has not received credit for even half of their effort. I really do appreciate your help introducing touhou to the western communities.
amazingly, 5 months ago after hearing that the song "already dead" was a basically stolen song, I went searching for the original song. Not too long until I found the original (the one that already dead was taking audio from). Long story short that is basically how I got into Touhou about 6 months ago when I forced myself to play it (I loved the bullet hell games very much.)
Many of the time, when searching for original versions of the songs I didn't investigate any further to find where it originally rooted from and lost interest, so I never was able to find the songs that came from the bullet hell game itself (for example, Night of Nights) and it amazes me how so many songs that came from touhou never had much people looking for and getting more of a fanbase. But thats for the better because touhou may have more of a toxic community lma
TLDR; i got into toho becus funy yuka song and uh fuc the fucging the good song yeah the ngiht of night and the bad apl they not mak people get into tohou thy just like th sogn

1. Got into the series about 10 years ago because a few of my friends were very fond of it.
2. Learned about the characters through listening to the music and playing Touhoumon (a pokémon rom hack).
3. Utsuho Reiuji is easily my favourite character.
4. Become Nuclear Physicist.

yay touhou
it always makes me happy to see people get an idea of touhou's impact and how important it is as a series
Glad to see that there are still a lot of fans around!
wow, didn't expect *this* from you! what's your favorite touhou fangame?
"Interdimensional Voyage of a Ghostly Passenger Ship"
A song name that, pretty much sums up UFO.

Ran" series, in particular).
i dunno man the officals mangas are pretty good and well you know... canon
@@dreamwolfnektovich1944 yes, you know like the official games, manga and books.
Realized I've been exposed to Touhou nearly my entire life without really knowing.
I stumbled upon Touhou when I was looking for erotic manga, not gonna lie. (really good stuff btw lol)
But that genuinely did spark an interest in me and then I came across all the fan music on RUclips, I absolutely fell in love.
People that made their own music based on the Touhou game tracks and are actually able to sell it. So many people that even came together and formed legit bands.
I really love Foreground Eclipse (sadly disbanded), ShibayanRecords and FELT if someone wants to know what I listen to.
ShibayanRecords was how I got into Touhou. Dream of Utopia and FoF.
I see, another man of culture
Touhou has made it into the vocaloid community which is how I found dojin and touhou its been about 5 months now and still learning a lot about touhou
Ah yes, more 2hu exposure to the west, really makes me happy how it's still growing in popularity despite its age
*Slowly growing Nights of Nights music in the background*
I got into Touhou awhile ago, and have played almost every game that has come out, except for the very original 5.
I was drawn into it because I had never seen anything like it at the time, the idea of dodging thousands of bullets and the great music and as you said likeable characters really made it appealing.
Great video gaijinhunter, very informative as always!

Now this was a topic I'd never thought would show up here. A Surprise that would make Kogasa jealous.
I've been enjoying Touhou for years so it makes me happy to see videos about it pop up like this.
