Smooth McGroove was the reason why I tried Touhou (EoSD to be more precise) for the first time, even if my first exposure was for GMod videos. ZUN has played us like a damn fiddle
It's how most people get introduced. Hentai and memes or hentai memes. There's other stuff but seeing some random chubby purple mage get porked by a demon succubus looking character you start asking questions wondering wtf is touhou project and why is it at 357k+ in the fan arts or tags.
I remember watching these tredning Touhou videos since 2011. In 2017, I became a fan of "Touhou Project" for the music, MMD videos and a few memes, after being obsessed with a Danmaku game called "Space Invader: Infinity Gene" that plays very similar to most Touhou games. If only that game would get ported to PC/Steam. Also, I'm still hoping for a "Marvel vs. Capcom" styled Doujin fan game called "Capcom vs. Touhou: Heroes of Lotus Wonderland" to exist. I mean you think these fan-bases as big as "Touhou Project" & "Vs. Capcom Series", a group of fans would make that kind of crossover game via either "Unity 3D" or "MUGEN". Look at "Capcom Universe: Nexus of Heroes". That game proves that it's possible to develop a cross-over Doujin game like that. Hopefully this idea/concept will help inspire some Touhou fans & Capcom fans who are looking forward to developing a Doujin Fan game. Do you agree with my thoughts?
This is from one of my steam profile comments. "I'm not saying Touhou is weeb, because it's not. Touhou is something special and definitely be remembered by many."
I know about touhou practically all my life, I think the first thing I saw was a youtuber that make funny GTA san andreas videos, full of touhou references and a mod that changes your character to flandre remilia or marisa. I didn't understand what touhou was, but the videos were funny and I was like 13 years old. And around at the same time I also watch the ronald mcdonald insanity video with flandre theme, and read on the comments that it was touhou music. But years later I was seeing touhou everywhere all the time, like everything I like had a touhou version/parody of it, and I was like "ok, I need to know what's this all about" and started playing Touhou 6 EoSD. I fell In love with the gameplay and the music, it blew my mind how good it was, but then I play the other games and were at the same quality level. Challenging old school games and great music are the two things that I like the most. I came because of the fandom things all over the internet and keep playing the games til today. Someday I wanna have a touhou tattoo lol
Yeah, an idiotic villain loli does a thing that causes climate change and the equally idiotic protag lolis go and shoot everyone on their way to the villain loli and they all have tea and become friends afterwards.
Getting into Touhou itself was a weird thing for me. I remember being in high school when memes and RUclips was getting off the ground, seeing so many videos such as Geddan or old memes of the characters that I never knew were from a long lasting game series was bizarre to see. Cut to years later, starting college and hearing a guy playing Touhou music over his phone but with no idea at the time. Then a few years after that, one of my now closest friends introduced me to Warugaki's version of Remilia and I slowly started getting hooked when he explained the series she's from. Now, I don't know if it's thanks to me latching on or a general interest and desire to find anything new when I was worried I was losing an interest in anything - but soon enough, I got hooked. Nowadays, I especially consider Touhou one of my favorite all time franchises. Thanks to a drunk game developer who allows his fans to have free reign - something normally unheard of, ESPECIALLY in the West, to a fanbase that remained through thick and thin, a beautiful setting that had an excellent mix of light and dark story telling, revived my love in Japanese culture and mythology that was fading, as well as theories that almost seem like rabbit holes within rabbit holes and countless remakes and songs for even the most obscure or the most popular of characters (seriously, I love seeing the number of tracks for characters like Yumemi, Remilia, Junko, and Utsuho). I can really go on forever, but seeing what I missed out on over the years and realizing how much Touhou sprinkled itself in my mind throughout the years really made me appriciate the franchise more than almost any other.
When I found touhou I thought it was a anime then quickly learned it was a fan creation of a game. Then found out it was a bullet hell which I'm bad at but like so I got touhou 6 and somehow managed to beat it then got into the music and now am just trying to learn who everyone is now lol. I am planning on playing more of them.
I agree that picking up other hobbies, or just general growing up, can make you lose interest in a series. I've certainly felt it after being a fan since UFO came out. But after poking your head back into the fandom, you're quickly reminded why you are a fan of the series in the first place, and your love for it just grows all over again. Certainly keeps me motivated to keep writing fanfics for the series, and I'll probably still be a fan long after!
I first heard reimilias theme in some guy who did reaction videos intro and I had no idea what the song was then a good 5 or 6 years later I think I found RhaardEBs channel then later Falkkon’s And found there covers of septett for the dead princess and other Touhou covers and thuse my obsession with remilia began before I knew who she was I was into tf2 at the time and also found a video called night men that was a cover of wriggle’s theme A while after that on the good server me and my friends played on I was playing Music on the media player TV in the game and one of my friends put on night of nights I asked him what it was frome and he said Touhou I then proceeded to look it up at night and immediately found you’re character profile of reimilia and my obsession grew And that was the story all about how my life got flipped turned upside down by the touhou project that was in the background of my life for the longest time and was brought to the foreground because of an obsession with a catchy song and character associated with that song as well as EOSD in general Good god I’ve been rambling through text
Nintendo : Why is this pathetic game still alive? ZUN : Oh, hey you forgot about Melee. Nintendo : I don't care for it's competitive scene, as I want to know how your game is still alive. ZUN : That's because I allow my game's fans to make any kind of content they want without me taking them down... Unlike you
Same with Sega and somewhat valve. Even if they make bad games fans pickup the slack HARD. Bethesda did that too until it went the always online paid sub routes.
1. artists, lots of them 2. fans music 3. loosely right to make touhou fan games 4. Lore 5. more than 10-15 officials touhou game (probably more than 30 if Zun live that long) 6. R-18 and so on….
Nintendo Sony and alot of other companies can learn. Touhou and Sega have a huge fanbase because of community input. Same with modded games. Both start with a couple handful or one person and then the fans take the reigns. It's like art. Once the artist creates after awhile it belongs to society. So many people from many different backgrounds and talents make so many different types of music, fan made games, comics, books, and even fanimes. As a greentext once pointed out: It's like TF2. TF2 it's just general to make stuff and be close to the cannon in some way while also being specific enough to get an idea of how the characters should be portrayed. Like soldier is a psychotic maniac but hes patriotic and will die for his team. Aside from being American not much is revealed nor about his potential future. Oddly enough weird or cartoon-Y or sometimes serious series can have many angles to work with. Lastly what he said us correct. Each character is fleshed out enough you can identify them by sillhouettes like in bad apple. Flandere Scarlett has diamond wings. Komachi usually has braids and a scythe and is seen on a boat working in the dead underworld's river. Reimu has her youkai beating stick and bows. Marisa has her broom and witch get up, etc. If you talk about a kelptomaniac witch that shoots lazers first thing to come to mind is Marisa. A shrime maiden whose lazy but also money driven and still good at heart Reimu. Even the new touhous you got angry space mom, claymation poop artist, another foxgirl, butterfly girl, crazy backup dancers, wheelchair backdoor momma, statue doggo, blue reskinned reporter, Mike, etc. You could probably point them out.
That explains how it maintains its popularity, and even part of how it spread to the west, but how it got big was definitely the Spellcard system. Danmaku is way less niche in the east than in the west and Touhou got its first spike from obscurity after it added that element. The music stayed largely the same but greater color variety was also added to the Danmaku in that iteration but it's the Spellcards that really stand out.
I haven't played a single Touhou game (and I probably won't because I don't wanna end up breaking my controller / keyboard or whatever magic device it needs to be played with) but I've come across the series thanks to Smooth McGroove's video and I've been in love with the music ever since. At first I only had a short glimpse at what people recommended and, for years, stuck with U.N. Owen Was Her, Necrofantasia and Septette for the Dead Princess as the only parts of my collection. Around fall of 2017, while at work, I remembered that I had always wanted to check out more of these games' OSTs and so I searched for a playlist that contained every song in chronological order. As soon as "A Sacred Lot" started playing, I knew I had stumbled upon something huge. Now it's April 2020 and ever since that day more than two years ago, I have been almost exclusively listening to Touhou music. Sure, there are a couple of other decent tracks and OSTs every now and then, but it's been pretty much 95 % Touhou. I just never get tired of it, be it the awesome originals or the amazing remixes made by fans. What started out as three random songs in my "nerd music" folder has now grown into its own collection spanning 119 songs (still growing), separated into originals, remixes, medleys and RichaadEB's Bullet Hell album (+ the tracks he made after its release). With hundreds of hours spent listening to the music on RUclips (and seeing the great fanart accompanying it) comes the desire to know more about the games, the characters and the world they're inhabiting. So I've been reading a bunch of Wiki articles, etc., started checking out the manga series with the three fairies and I've been watching videos such as this one right here. Glad to hear ZUN enjoys the fans getting creative with his world. tl:dr; ZUN does sound like a pretty swell guy and I'm thankful for what he created.
My passion for 2hu has been waning ever since Ten Desires. Whereas I used to devour anything from games, manga, music, doujins, fanfics, etc., nowadays I feel like all of those things have lost their shine. I guess that just happens when you've been around a fandom for a while.
Touhou is about gods and youkais... they never die. They never die according to their lore and never die as a cultural phenomenon (shinto is still being a main religion in Japan nowadays)
The gameplay is a big factor as well. The games are not top notch programming wise, but the concept is everything you want a satisfying danmaku game to be. The focus/unfocus is very managable and enjoyable to control, little things like the graze mechanic and deathbombing gives you the sense that you can achieve higher than just dodge all, kill all and get rewarded to give 110%. The danmaku focuses more on creative patterns than speed so precision is just as much of a factor as rection time. The games are in general not on the hardcore spectrum, opening them up to a wider audience. The still take time to beat and provide a challange for nearly everyone, but they dont push the human limit at stage 2. The power system gives some sense of progression and growth without the need for a permant upgrade system that detracts from the actual gameplay.
Top-notch music and character designs, combined with the near lack of restrictions on making fan content. It allows for literally anything to be made, you can even make a Touhou horror fanfic and it can still be good. That is what makes people come back. One thing that I will never get is how Nintendo passed such a big opportunity to include this series in Smash! Instead we got more FE characters and recycled content from the base game. At least we have Steve.
it would seem what Sakuya has gotten tired to Patchouli not doing her work right witch is the last straw so she is now "helping her " exercise she does need it
I was introduced to Legacy of lunatic kingdom as a first contact with the series in 2015. Traumatic is an understatement. (Don't introduce a new person straight to Legacy or Subterranean ever). Fortunately Frontier games were there too. So i knew there are so fun games as well. Music was the reason i'm stayed. I discovered Horned Hermit on my own. It was difficult to read Word goshintai was on second page xD Reading HH without any knowledge about shinto or touhou fun stuff. Everyone is different for me, lore and music decided that i'm here now and not somewhere else. Because of doujin works i discovered this channel.
Music Characters Gameplay then Fandom has arrived od the most die hard fans which created Hentai Remixes Dojinshi works etc. which lead more people to it and the circle starts again but even bigger than before
It shocks me that most hentai 2hu works are pedophilic(most lewd works are about characters who look like 8 year olds namely Flandre,Koishi,Remilia,Satori etc)
@@thedegenerateone1122 that's not the point The abnormal thing about it is that a shit ton of people fap at Koishi hentai so fucking much in hentai sites that it enrages me since they know she looks like 8 yet they still Fap at her. Because it's all mostly the work of one guy it's free from the corporate franchise-ization stuff that's turned people off of so many other properties (e.g. Star Wars). ZUN isn't under any enormous strain to "10x" the profit he makes from this year's game versus last year's the way he would be if Team Shanghai Alice was a huge corporation that has to drive profit for shareholder. Because of that there's no pressure for him to stretch Touhou into areas it may not fit into, or write or design things in way he may not be comfortable with but the marketing department said will drive more game or manga sales.
Wow! Where did you get your latest "Master Spark" ending shot? And also..."Open Worlds," no matter how they manage to exist (one of mine is The Elder Scrolls: Morrowind" and it's add-ons) tend to attract followers who stay with 'em. Whether it's a game that allows players to add additional content (like Morrowind and Minecraft) or game WORLDS that allow fans to create derivative content, like Touhou, Vocaloid, and a few others.
Why? Simple. Some people just got into it late at this quarantine, like me, i know Touhou a long time ago since JzBoy uploaded Marisa vs Asriel but i never got to it, until 2020.
i just watch it. here have a like! if Zun were as strict as others like nintendo, we will not see mariari, nitroid, labyrinth of touhou, megamari, super marisa world, spring crisis, nitori inc and other cool games based on touhou. not to mention some art, arranged music, vocal tracks like something made by rd sounds, yellow Zebra, cool and create. i can only name few because i only know few but because Zun is fine about sharing is IP we have nice things up to know... and few bad things that AVGN will cover someday. can someone link Zun social media account so i can post him thank you using google translate??
Boi this is kind of funny with deadman's plagiarism drama, that POS still somehow doesn't receive any punishment yet and people still got scammed and lied
One thing that must be avoided when it comes to a popular franchise. I see a Salty Undertale community always saying "Get Dunked On!" While I afraid one of Touhou community copies their behavior by saying "Za Warudo for timestop or Master Spark for Kamehameha."
like why the fuck i would like a bunch of fucking over powered girls as specially sakya which can stop time unlimited time when controlling time is my dream
Funny how Touhou’s popular is something many want to reach but looking at recent clown festa of WC3 that had high popularity because of freedom of maps and gamemodes only to be ruined by greed of literally legally stealing community contents and somehow for some god know what reason they said they wonder why they don’t have popularity like this and this applies to many clown festa of other triple A company And they still wonder why...

If only I had the power to warp reality or *[ Z A W A R U D O : O V E R H E A V E N ]* I would change 100% of all the FE characters on smash to 2hu Characters
That would give Touhou a lot of characters.
or i owuld ask saitama to somp them
Smooth McGroove was the reason why I tried Touhou (EoSD to be more precise) for the first time, even if my first exposure was for GMod videos.
ZUN has played us like a damn fiddle
ZUN's got that big brain.
A decent about of reasons here seem to be
*HENTAI*
XD
No kidding, I think TH has the best Hentai Doujin circle- or at least ties with Fate, as it is older
glad that star platinum and the world raped sakya
It's how most people get introduced. Hentai and memes or hentai memes. There's other stuff but seeing some random chubby purple mage get porked by a demon succubus looking character you start asking questions wondering wtf is touhou project and why is it at 357k+ in the fan arts or tags.
How is it still popular?
Simple! The music. If not, then hentai. Trust me.
look like you know what you are talking about
Very true.
bruh im there because ZUN add some japan mythology (and some foreign mythology)
Congratulations! You’re the rare exception.

It was definitely the music that got me into Touhou. Now days I still listen to a lot of the music and of course the art is top notch.
The music is without a doubt banging.
the series is uninteresting in the universe
I've heard of stuff like that before.
This is from one of my steam profile comments.
"I'm not saying Touhou is weeb, because it's not. Touhou is something special and definitely be remembered by many."
Saying Touhou is weeb is like saying Legend of Zelda and Fire Emblem is weeb just because it's from Japan.
I like that quote.
Oh wow. Your first exposure to funny GTA san andreas is definitely different from what I'm used to.
ruclips.net/video/MXuhnvWNErw/видео.html
Also, the story is pretty amazing
Theres a story? I thought it was just bored lolis that drank too much.
I'm glad to see how what Touhou has been like for you over the years.
some memes are nonsense.
When did you get a new outro also it's nice
And i hope reimu get's into smash bros touhou is getting more popular
Reimu in smash would be cool.
I first heard reimilias theme in some guy who did reaction videos intro and I had no idea what the song was then a good 5 or 6 years later I think I found RhaardEBs channel then later Falkkon’s
And found there covers of septett for the dead princess and other Touhou covers and thuse my obsession with remilia began before I knew who she was
I was into tf2 at the time and also found a video called night men that was a cover of wriggle’s theme
A while after that on the good server me and my friends played on I was playing Music on the media player TV in the game and one of my friends put on night of nights I asked him what it was frome and he said Touhou
I then proceeded to look it up at night and immediately found you’re character profile of reimilia and my obsession grew
And that was the story all about how my life got flipped turned upside down by the touhou project that was in the background of my life for the longest time and was brought to the foreground because of an obsession with a catchy song and character associated with that song as well as EOSD in general
Good god I’ve been rambling through text
I've heard of those two channels before. They make some good remixes.
Nintendo : Why is this pathetic game still alive?
ZUN : Oh, hey you forgot about Melee.
Nintendo : I don't care for it's competitive scene, as I want to know how your game is still alive.
ZUN :
That's because I allow my game's fans to make any kind of content they want without me taking them down... Unlike you
A good response.
Same with Sega and somewhat valve. Even if they make bad games fans pickup the slack HARD.
Bethesda did that too until it went the always online paid sub routes.
Im gonna throw in MinusT in this section
MinusT certainly helps.
1. artists, lots of them
2. fans music
3. loosely right to make touhou fan games
4. Lore
5. more than 10-15 officials touhou game (probably more than 30 if Zun live that long)
6. R-18
and so on….
As a greentext once pointed out:
It's like TF2.
It's about time you make a video about this, I've been hoping you talk about this topic since I found your channel.
It was not a subject I really thought of until recently.
Some say that the gboiz kept touhou alive, some say the memes, some say the lewds.
But I, truly know, that Magiftw has kept it alive.
ZUN is without one swell dude. And thanks Smooth for being epic.
My passion for 2hu has been waning ever since Ten Desires. Whereas I used to devour anything from games, manga, music, doujins, fanfics, etc., nowadays I feel like all of those things have lost their shine. I guess that just happens when you've been around a fandom for a while.
Touhou is an open portal which draws from the spiritual power of this world while also inspiring those who love it with its addictive energy.
Touhou is about gods and youkais... they never die. They never die according to their lore and never die as a cultural phenomenon (shinto is still being a main religion in Japan nowadays)
The touhou fandom is just funny and not toxic, very hard to quit, not like undertale or anime fandoms
I started drawing touhou charas because they are so well designed
You list some good points there. Ones I hadn't thought of. It's just the gameplay is something I rarely hear people talking about.
Touhou Shall Forever Remain Strong!!!
I agree.
The MEMEs jack!
The MEME kept it alive 🤣

Music is definitely a good reason to stay.

It shocks me that most hentai 2hu works are pedophilic(most lewd works are about characters who look like 8 year olds namely Flandre,Koishi,Remilia,Satori etc)
Most characters in 2hou look like 8 year old so it’s very normal friend

Touhou is a Innocent Treasure
Very true.

One thing that must be avoided when it comes to a popular franchise. I see a Salty Undertale community always saying "Get Dunked On!" While I afraid one of Touhou community copies their behavior by saying "Za Warudo for timestop or Master Spark for Kamehameha."
za warudo is from jojo tho XD
It's the opposite, every time Jojo fanboys see Sakuya they are the one saying "If Dio was a maid", "Za Warudo!", "Dio's wife"
