Also they are extremely versatile they have soft rock like this song, they have ballads, they have hard rock, electric/techno-ish rock and the lyrics are always filled with literal poetry, rhyming, actual meaning and the music videos are always done with artistic mindset first and they never give the audience the meaning of the songs/videos and rather let everyone experience and interpret the songs in their own way.

Marko's mother is British, so that's probably the explanation for his wonderful manner of speaking and singing English. He writes all his songs in English. All the albums are 100% English lyrics. And I don't think of POTF as a metal band. Marko has one of the best head voices I've ever heard; his falsetto is fantastic.

I discovered Poets of the Fall from playing a game called Control, they appear in the game as both the Poets of the Fall and as a band called the Old Gods Of Asgard, where they have written and performed a song specifically written for the game. They did this with a game called Alan Wake also. Both games are made by the same studio

Another Finnish band to check is Steve'n'Seagulls. Allthough most would say look up "Thunderstruck", I would recommend their cover of "November Rain". They have their own style.

POTF have many good songs and I would suggest many, but sticking with one I'll mention the song Illusion And Dream. That was the song that first got me to listen to the band when I heard it on the radio during my conscription duty. And now, like in many other videos on youtube, I slam that like button for the best reason: I see cat!

About his voice. This was the 17th song they played out of 19 that night so I imagine that has at least something to do with how some of the vocals sound. Especially since they didn't really have any brakes between the songs and pretty much just plowed through them with short interludes here and there to fit as much songs as possible to the show since it was their 10 year anniversary tour.

I was like 😮??? as well, but keep in mind this was his first time listening to Marko’s vocals, so he cannot know what those of us who have listened to all of their albums know: That Marko’s use of falsetto is one of his common trademarks, that it is a very strong and solid falsetto, and that due to his classical training he usually has perfect control of his voice. We’re all human, after all.

It was when I first heard Poets Of The Fall that I started to notice how good many non-English bands are with the English language, not just the pronunciation of the lyrics but also the structure and construction of the text itself. All the little bits and pieces are there, nothing is missing. And on top of that it's also intelligent and well written!
I'm sure you have seen already that this was Live in Moscow, Russia - Another country where English is not spoken normally. But the crowds love it anyway, for the simple reason that Good Music Has No Language, it is Universal.
You have provided a link to the bands homepage, I don't know how much you have looked around there but if you went to the Shop page you probably also know already that they have their own brand of Tea and Coffee. Unfortunately they don't ship to the US due to customs practices so maybe it was bad of me to point you in that direction, sorry! Cheers / B.

My mother was born in Fiji. I’m Aussie born. Something I’ve noticed is the way English is taught in both countries. In Fiji, English is actually the national language. But it’s taught very formally. So there’s more emphasis on enunciation and even vocabulary. In Australia, English is more like a “de facto” language. And so whilst it is obviously taught in all schools. There’s also a bit more reliance on slang and other informal parts of the language.
So much so that my mother still occasionally asks me to translate a particular turn of phrase for her. Despite her being a fluent English speaker her entire life.

I don't think Finland can produce a bad band, ever. Knowing how much i was into Finish rock, i'm ashamed to say i found this band kind of late. Maybe, because i was already turning my head to other directions/countries.
Very distinguishing voice and sound that perfectly fits the younger version of myself (or more like the time and my feelings back then).
Every artist has its niche or perhaps a target audience, right? I see a lot of males in the Band-maid shows. It's normal.
You would definitely see tones of female fans in the audience of another Finnish band called H.I.M. They were mocked by the hard core alfa macho metal fans, because the band's music and lyrics were very romantic. Usually the ladies' favorite, right? But for me, they were still rock'n'roll as Hell. Very unique mixture and vibe.
I'd like to take the chance to ask, there will be no more Wagakki band? Or not any time soon?

This song is very mainstream in Finland, so calling it that is not an insult. I remember this as kid in Finland it was everywhere and ofc I hated it lol. This is the only song I know from this band too.
People in Finland study English in school for over 10 years, so the level here is good. Generally you can still hear the accents, but many people speak English here very well.

  • @-breakofdawn-
    @-breakofdawn- 10 месяцев назад

Of course his enunciation is great, he was raised bilingually speaking both English and Finnish from an early age, and he later spent some time studying in Ireland and in the US. So he is basically a native speaker. I’d say this is the reason for the exceptionally wonderful lyrics he writes as well, but frankly, I have rarely (if ever) come across a band who are native speakers and write such gorgeous, poetic lyrics. The band name ”Poets” is therefore 100% justified. As for the falsetto part, as others have stated before me, he’s a classically trained singer, hence his usually excellent control of his voice, and the use of his (very solid) falsetto register is actually one of his trademarks which you’ll hear in many of his songs. But this was live and towards the end of the show, and we’re all human after all, so you should give him another chance. 😉

They're a great band and I'm getting kinda sick that everyone's only reacting to this one song. They're not a "one hit wonder", they've stayed incredibly consistent over almost 20 years now. They got plenty of songs even better than this. Check out War, 15 Minute Flame, Smoke & Mirrors, Revolution Roulette, Late Goodbye, The Poet and The Muse, Passion Colors Everything, False Kings, Revelations. Kinda funny when you said "This has a good mainstream sound to it", because Finnish metal bands wouldn't really see it as an insult because metal IS mainstream here. It doesn't get much more mainstream metal here than Children of Bodom.
I think this mentality of "being mainstream" being an insult is a bit of an Americanism where you don't simply hear a lot of metal in the mainstream. Meanwhile Finnish easy listening radio stations straight up plays Metallica, Apocalyptica and other hard rock music that would usually be reserved for rock stations.
Finnish metal doesn't avoid going mainstream, but they will still just do their own thing because metal can be mainstream here right next to the softest of pop hits.
