  • The law of mass action states that the rate of a reaction is proportional to the product of the concentrations of each reactant. This law can be used to explain the behavior exhibited by solutions in dynamic equilibria.
    The law of mass action has a wide variety of applications. For example, an aqueous reaction that produces gas might favor the reactants, but when the gas is allowed to leave the reaction system, the reaction becomes favorable.
    Just over 150 years ago, on 15 March 1864, Peter Waage and Cato Guldberg presented law of mass action.
