- The internet has been talking about this beach a lot in the past few years. Today I'm heading out in the middle of the day to find out if you can still find shells without getting up before sunrise. This is part one of this two part mini series, as I did not want to cram everything into just one (and spoiler, there were a ton of shells). Stay tuned for part two, which will feature a super rare shell and a ton of other awesome stuff! Video was filmed during winter, which is the best time of year for shelling there :)
Born and raised at Holden Beach! Love to call it home! Grew up ok the shore with my dads love for fishing and my moms love for shelling! Glad i stumbled across your videos!❤
Awesome to hear! Thanks so much for watching :)
Omgosh.. I was going banas!!! Baby's ears are the best.. but I wish I was there I love them can't wait for part 2!!!!
Thank you so much! Part 2 will be super fun :)
Wow so many baby’s ears 😍 That would be so fun picking those up ❤ Lot’s of shells in that area. It’s on my bucket list 👍🏼 Great shelling midday!
It's incredible how loaded that beach is with them. Shelling there is so much different than southwest Florida. Thank you so much for watching!
I'd love to visit a proper shelling beach someday. I've found some pretty incredible things on average beaches, so I'm really curious to see what I can find somewhere with that many shells!
I'm sure you would find awesome stuff, highly recommended! Thank you for watching :)
Wow that was amazing I wish I could find that many shells in 1 day 🤗
It's usually the matter of hitting the right day, I got pretty lucky. Thanks for watching!
Yes we have shark teeth and lots of other fossils here! It’s so fun🎉
Oh my gosh…lettered olives were everywhere!
It was nothing like I've seen before!
Honestly could not believe the olives! Question, do you ever find shark teeth on Holden or is that not really a thing over there? Those piles just look like they would have teeth in them 😂
Yes, I have found shark teeth on Holden, it's totally a thing there. Thank you so much :)
So cool. The shark eyes, baby ears and olives are beautiful there. I would love to find some tusk. Never found one before. Does the north end of Holden seem to have more shells at times?
The northwest side of the island is pretty good. By the pier there are usually good shell beds but when I went to the tip of the island I didn't find anything. Tusks are all over the place though! Thank you so much for watching and commenting :)
Shell-vana 😊
It was a great day!
When was this filmed? I live here in Lockwood Folly a few mins from Holden Beach and that looks like winter shell piles. It’s season now and it looks quite different plus it looks like you have winter clothes on lol
You are absolutely correct, this is from winter. I have a backlog of footage from the trip so naturally it takes time before I get through everything. Thank you so much for watching and commenting!
10:58 is that a wentel trap to the "Northeast" of your pinky??? 😳😳
It's a three-line mud snail, a very common shell for the area :)
Seems you aren’t interested in the turkey wings. I saw so many of them.
They're actually mossy arks, not turkey wings. They're so common there I don't feel the need to pick up every one since I already have so many. Thank you for watching!
Where is Holden Beach? Up north? Or in Florida???
It's in North Carolina. Not FL which may come as a surprise for sure.
Do you collect shells 🐚 or just pick them up and throw them back down?
Some of the nicer shells I keep, and I leave a lot behind. Usually after multiple days of shelling I have bagfulls of shells I don't really need and return those to the beach.
Where is the best shelling on Holden Beach? Interested in flying down for a week of shelling. Not at all familiar with the area.
I'd say around the pier is a solid bet, though of course beach conditions change daily so you never fully know what it will be like. Thank you so much for watching :)
When is the best time of year for shelling there?
Off season plus winter is the best, so probably from around November through March.
Here tell that it's unlawful to take coral. You might want to check that law out.
