    I like what you said about sketching in a part and then assuming there's something wrong with it that has to be changed, instead of assuming it's instantly perfect.

    • @FlorentFargesarts

      It's a tough idea for most people, because it's frustrating and nobody likes to assume they're wrong ! But in a learning phase, it helps !

    That's a nice metaphor for anything in life. The first mark you have to guess, you have nothing to measure it by, compare it to... First steps are scary. 😱😅
    I usually end up erasing the first lines I made, but I needed to make them. Good to remember that. 🌸👍

    My journey as an artist started in graphite and though I can draw faces, I have always struggled with proportions. I had never thought of using a plumb line to better measure reference points against each other and have a fixed point to measure off of. What a brilliant solution to a problem that has plagued me for years. Thank you and I truly appreciate it.

    • @FlorentFargesarts
      @FlorentFargesarts  4 года назад +3

      It's a big help in the beginning and with experience, the brain naturally looks for these reference points and you can abandon the plumb line and be free, with good proportions!

    Thank you for this tutorial! I think this will help me tremendously to get the likeness on my sketches from now on. I work mostly on digital but I do as much as I can to do portraits on just 1 layer as if I draw them in real paper or canvass. I have been struggling with getting the likeness for the longest time. Like what you have said, I am guilty at this, I do the roof immediately before doing the proper foundation.😁 Also, I am weird, I don't start with lines, I start with gray blobs and do it like "sculpting"/shading immediately that's why I struggle with the likeness.

    Love how u teach. I practise everyday. Thank you.
    One question...how do i blur out a face in oil painting. Tku

  • @bettychilldres9860
    @bettychilldres9860 Год назад +1

    So you're saying that shading is what actually CREATES the 3D sculptured appearance... and NOT the mear line drawings?
    So shading gives VOLUME (a fullness)?
    Thanks Florent... you're a GREAT teacher of art!! 😊

    • @FlorentFargesarts
      @FlorentFargesarts  Год назад +1

      Yes, exactly, sometimes, in a portrait, you don't get a decent likeness until you reach the shading stage. With just like it's like the core of the likeness is missing somehow.

    The techniques you show make so much more sense to me. I could never figure out why it was so difficult to get proportions look normal. Will the plumb line also work for enlarging a photograph?

    Helpful, insightful video...maybe it's just the facial hair, but I think you resemble the subject...not a carbon copy, and his eyes are smaller [at least in the piece you copied] but enough to say so. Thanks for posting!

    The geometric really helps! I always have to enlarge my portraits. Does that makes finding the proportions in order to get a great likeness harder?

  • @susanwong6471

    Thank you for sharing the knowledge - for newbie, is it ok to draw grid lines throughout ? Your drawing is amazing.

    • @FlorentFargesarts
      @FlorentFargesarts  4 года назад +2

      If you want to improve long term and be good at drawing free hand, just reduce the number of lines in your grid progressively, until you're only left with one plumb line.

    I was confused by your use of the drawing compass...How would comparing measurements to the original help, when your drawing is smaller? I’m guessing that’s why the proportions on the left side of his face are so different; with the original being both wider, and longer, than your drawing. (I don’t think the angle we’re viewing from could distort those proportions). Can you explain, please?
    Thank you for your time.

    Thank you for this great tutorial! I have a question, though. Do this kind of practice also helps the skill of life drawing? Because it's not possible to use campus or lines in life drawing. Would it bad to rely too much on these tools? Or is it just a transition period that leads to better observation skills?

      Is the goal of Life Drawing to capture the likeness of the persons face? I haven't taken the class, but I don't think that is the point of it. I think it is more about capturing the movement, gesture, overall shape of the human form, not a likeness of the face. Do they hold one pose for an hour?

    • @FlorentFargesarts
      @FlorentFargesarts  4 года назад +1

      For copies, I suggest using the sight size method, so dividing at a scale of 1:1. A proportional divider wouldn't help more than a simple compass.
