This same problem happens for the watercolors, too - the Primatek colors mainly (from Daniel Smith), and the earth colors that dry very 'solid' - like burnt sienna. The way to FIX THIS PROBLEM, for ANY gouche or watercolor, is to add a drop of vegtable glycerin to the pan along with the paint, and mix it until smooth and even. So when it dries out and shrinks, it won't crack and it'll stay adhered to the bottom and sides. So even if you do a 2nd fill to top it off, that paint will adhere to the layer below and stay whole. Most people use a tookpick to do this, but I don't know why (it's too big of a stick, and its dry so that it absorbs moisture and the paint sticks to it far more) - just straighten out half of a large or medium sized paperclip. And then use the 'stick' part of the paperclip stirrer to collect the glycerin drop to add to each pan, so that way you don't add too much accidentally. Hope this helps!

I recently traveled to Spain for a sketching trip. I took a folio and a demi. I also had filled and dried backup pans which I put on a tin I had hanging around. I stuck a magnet inside for them all to stick to. It worked great for my backups. I also had my less used colours in there.
I like this little pallet. What I don’t like about it is it does not have a tension hinge. So when you buy the big one, it’s still fits nicely in your hand, but you have to try to support the top and the bottom in your hand. It’s not comfortable to keep your hand that wide open the whole time you’re painting if you could put a little Sleeve underneath it like you use on your iPhone you could hold the bottom very comfortably but then the top just flops open all the way. I would prefer I could bend it like I would normal easel and have it stay in 90° position. That would not take a big change, because they make some very small tension hinges that would work on this. That would make all the difference in the world. Also, I appreciate the fact that the little box is very, very slim. But if it was just a tiny bit thicker, you could put your own pans inside it with a little magnetic bottom on them and they would stay perfectly. But those hands are just a little too thick, and the little easel does not close with them in there.
Great points! Sometimes I hold them, sometimes I put them on my knee or the ground or even the arm of a chair. Yesterday I was out (painting llamas!) and sat it on my U.Go palette (which was on a tripod.) Yeah, kind of defeated the concept of traveling 'light.'

Did you get it yet?? Hope you love it as much as I love mine! I use them all the time, and even take them with me when I'm out oil painting in case I want to paint watercolor or gouache instead. They are so light it does not add much to my already-too-heavy pack, ha ha!
