I don’t think people appreciate how much of the DD sound is John Taylor. The first time I ever heard DD, the bass is what caught my ear. Those funky grooves, and in songs like Rio the speed and beauty, push them into awesomeness!!

My son, who plays guitar (not bass) just came downstairs. He is 15. He said "oh, John Taylor is doing another tutorial online, cool" and sat down to watch. He is a self taught player learning all he can about how music comes together and DD was one of the first bands he ever heard (before he was even born). He said "this guy is so cool", referring to John, to which I agreed and grinned. He's into all sorts of music (mostly Nirvana at the moment) but has a genuine 80's DD poster on his wall amongst others. He's up in his room strumming away now, so gorgeous. Thank you John :)

Every time John smiles, I find myself smiling back -- love how from the 1st episode of this series he talked about his love of punk, funk and now, how "Original Sin," by Inxs brought them to Nile Rodgers and lifted "Reflex" to cool, jumpy and pulsating beat. Duranies Unite!

And here I was a Black American girl who felt I had to justify my love of Duran Duran when this just really brings it home how much Black American culture and music was such a huge influence on John's evolution as a bass player and the entire core sound of Duran Duran. Full circle.

Their skin was a different color to mine and they were from a different culture, but their music spoke to me. It also sounded great.

I watched a video JT made, similar to this one, where he spoke of getting a juke box (loaded with old 45 rpm records) as a recent birthday gift. After the festivities were done he flipped on the thing and listened by himself. He spoke of the amazement he felt listening to each record and taking in all the bits and pieces (no pun intended [DC5]). He could scarcely take in each song -- then the next record would flop down and play and he'd be amazed all over again. He spent hours doing this! The mark of a true musician with real love for music. Makes me even more happy he managed to survive '80's superstardom.

Because my mom was 21 and I was only 1 when the music video for "The Reflex" released in 1983, she claims that the CGI waterfall rushing through the screen projector was a major jaw-dropping moment for me.
Once that guy got splashed in the face from the water, she SWEARS that I literally squealed with laughter as a toddler.

I never liked Duran Duran until this song and A view to a Kill.
And I remember vividly the evening we had the first meetup of our secondary school I was listening to that song on a mix tape and a kid walked in with a John Taylor like mullet, wearing a homemade hand knitted Duran Duran jumper his grandma made. So we instantly hit it off.
He was a true fan and I was more into heavy metal and rock and a casual listener to esoteric Brit pop.
And as confused teenganger we spend a motive time together over music and we became boyfriends and so we spend even more time at each other’s houses and exploring our preferred different genres. Really analyzing it he was a horn player, Bugel and later Saxophone and I jammed a little on keys.
And he nourished a flame in me to really start playing synths and writing songs.
Then we grew up and our identities shaped. And I went into guitar and full on neo-classical metal and progressive rock.
He was into rap and hiphop. We didn’t really talk to each other anymore.
Then fate brought us together again because we ended up in the same college studying different things. He now was cleaned up wearing a blazer and nice pressed pants and he was completely into alt rock. And introduced me to REM that a few months later had a monster hit with Losing My Religion.
We bonded again over completely different genres of music.

Dearest John .. wow .. love The Reflex (which so many of us do of course). And, so love hearing/seeing the song structure and its origins. I really do love the entire Seven and The Ragged Tiger album. It is an album that I really love listening to from start to finish, and I guess the fact that it starts off so fantastic is probably one of the reasons. Also, for me, that album was the one where I officially became a Duranie. I starting falling in love with the band and the music when I bought a compilation tape (may have been one of those K Tel ones .. Star Tracks?!) I know it had Hungry Like the Wolf and Every Breath You Take by The Police and Straight From the Heart by Bryan Adams. Anyways, that's another story for another time .. LOL. So, I started my fandom around that time and so became acquainted with RIO (Save A Prayer and The Chauffeur are my faves). Such a fab album!! But, it is Seven and The Ragged Tiger is the album that made me fall totally in love with Duran Duran and the music - I guess because it was the band's most recent release at that time, and I think it is a banger of an album (The Seventh Stranger is EPIC). I love the journey that album takes me on when I listen to it from front to back. And, let's not even mention the cover .. it is such a great pin-up of the band, so for a 12 year old, there was no contest - BEST ALBUM COVER EVER!! I actually still have the big poster of this album cover in my home office. Finally, the fact that Nile Rodgers was brought into the fold (and to this day, I look at him as the 6th member of Duran Duran!!) is just the icing on the cake for this episode of Stone Love Bass Odyssey. Thanks for taking the time to do these .. as I said last week .. we are learning so much!! And, of course, you know we are all waiting in Room 7609 to hear you play that amazing bass line in Late Bar (yes, as I said before, I am relentless!!). Say 'hi' to the beautiful Gela and all the best to you both xxxx oooo

At the age of 14 I saw DD on MTV. It was the very first music video I had ever seen, and the video was ‘The Reflex’. The song was an auditory explosion to my senses and the video’s visuals fed the eyes, but it was your bass playing John that planted the musical seed that took root and spread throughout my adolescent brain. I wanted to play the bass, and I wanted to play just like you. That day, that song, and that video started me on a never ending musical voyage that has taken me from the bass to the drums, keyboards/piano, and guitar. I wouldn’t say I have mastered any of them, but I still get a rush of adrenaline when I get to play any of DD’s songs with my buddies. Thank you for the music, the inspiration and for taking the time to make these videos!

John Taylor. The reason I picked up, and the reason I put down, the bass. What an amazing player. One of my heroes.

The tight rhythm section in DD is what made the sound...I just listening to JT's bass lines. Driven, groovy, funky and super-tight all at the same time. Having a thoughtful, conscientious, bass player build a a bass line as a foundation for the whole song impresses me WAY more than hearing a bass clinic on every track.

Would love to see you play “A View to a Kill”. Maybe odd. But what an amazing jazz type bass line!
    Dare ya!

Probably, the greatest rhythym section ever. John Taylor's the bloke who made me switch from six-strings to four. Technique will get you so far, but you can't teach what comes from the heart.

Hi ,John & Fellow DD fans! I've been listening since PLANET EARTH ( I bought an import copy 12 inch, almost 1 YEAR b4 USA release - upon local record seller's suggestion) . LOVE your bass playing: smooth & accurate notes , fun & FUNky 🙋 Please keep making these videos. May I request ... You doing one on how you approach jamming ; how do YOU just start a groove going with other musicians and / or play off of their riffs. Thank you for my absolutely FUN FILLED 80s & beyond with DD music 🙌

That bassline is so simple but so funky. I had my bass teacher show it to me when I was in 7th grade (1983).

Reflex is easily my fave Duran Duran song.I was only in second grade when they were really big, but their 93 album I played everyday my senior year and that summer. I listened to Rio the other day and heard the bass...mind blown. Very obvious he had an eclectic taste and he was so young. Why don't more ppl talk about John Taylor? We need more artists like this today, making interesting songs. Change, Melody, Pre Chorus...all of it. Inxs also underrated band.
