    It was performed at the peak of Pollini's piano performing career and is also the best version of the piece.

    This sonata is in itself a great masterwork. This is obvious from the very first measures of the introduction, which are more than promising. Pollini shows us that he will meet this challenge as soon as these first measures. This is a masterly interpretation of this great sonata.

    I'm not aware of other interpretations of this piece, but I'm sure Pollini had performed better (better in the sense of my taste) than what Shumann originally intended. If Shumann had originally intented to perform this piece as what Pollini has shown, then I believe this piece should have been much more famous, somwhat as Beethoven's.

    The intro to the first movement, 52 measures, unique. Material does not for development until the 2nd movement. The finale, longest of the 4 movements, Rondo but really without any development.

    • @hwh1946

      appear for development. The last movement was also the first composed.

    • @Ricardo7250
      @Ricardo7250 2 года назад +1

      Yep. Also the pacing of the first movement is a bit dry, there is a pause between each repetition and each section instead of actual transitions. The development section is over bloated as well, it does too many things and loses some momentum because of it.

    Commanding, incisive, great clarity and definition. However he lurches and accents phrases under affected ideas about romanticism and lets his youthful demonstrative personality get the better of the music, the immaturity becoming very tiresome and silly and I had to quit two thirds through. This doesn’t approach the more even and subtle Demus in this music that isn’t architectonic but juxtapositional where ideas make static mosaics.
