Dewalt DCD996 1/2" Brushless 3-Speed Hammer Drill Driver Review

  • Dewalt's DCD996 is an improvement in power and lighting over the DCD995 that came out a few years ago. The DCD996 gives the user all the power one would want out of this size drill and in most cases when using a larger drill bit, warrants the use of the side handle to protect yourself from sudden kickbacks. The three speed and electric clutch system is nothing new, but the power and extra LED lighting that can double as a flashlight is something that is not found on other drills. If you are looking for these features, but do not want a hammer drill, Dewalt offers the DCD991.

      well, funny thing is that on the bare tool option ( only the tool itself, no batteries or charger ) there is a lot of complaints. But if you read the comments on the kit which mean tool, battery and charger and if I remember correctly some bit holder there is more or less only possitive reviews. So, whats funny about that? well, it is exactly the same tool. Some goes out from the factory in a box with battery abd charger and some will be shipped without but neverless it is still exactly the same drill. So do not worry.
      Maybee there was some bad batch in the begining but that happens to every manufacture and I wouldnt worry to much.

    I have used Dewalt for years. I have never NEVER!!!! had a Dewalt tool fail on me. I just bought this drill to drill some 3/4 holes in concrete and it did't let me down. The fact that you can use the 60 volt max batteries with these tools has just made the 20v max series that much better. My father has had many Rigid, Makita tools, and I say many because he has had to replace them time and again. I like to spend the money on good tools and I like to use them hard and not worry. I will stop buying Dewalt as soon as one of their tools lets me down, that might be a long time coming. Milwaukee has always been the competition, but I have yet to try one. I would, but all of my Dewalt tools just won't quit. From personal experience you can't go wrong with a Dewalt. The only tool that has given me some complaint is their Oscillating saw. It gets pretty hot in the handle area. With that said, it has never quite and has been one of the handiest tools I have for construction projects.

    I’m looking at purchasing the dcd 796 or the dcd 996 which 1 in your option is the best 1 for me to purchase because if the settings 1 and 2 are most used and setting 3 on odd occasions only wouldn’t it be best to purchase the dcd 796. Because the setting 3 is basically useless or too powerful to do holes.am I correct
    Especially if the dcd796 is virtually the same as the 996 and if the 996 struggles on setting 3 then really the 996 would be a waste of money when you can purchase the 796 and do the same stuff and just as much power as the 996 and the torches on both are also the same - This is a hard choice which do I purchase please help me decided much appreciated
    As there is also more torque settings on the dcd 796 as I’ve noticed on your very good video you made
    They both also weigh the same so really I’m not noticing much if anything different on both models apart from setting 3
    I look forward to hear back from you so I can place my order thank you...

      I'm afraid you may have to take the chuck off and disassemble it to repair, or replace.
      Taking the chuck off isn't as simple as a screw in the bottom of the chuck.
      It's press fitted, but not massively tight.
      There are some tutorials online. Just don't follow the ones that tell you to put an allen key in the chuck and then hit it with a hammer. It may work, but it may also damage your drills internals.

      WorkshopAddict hey I was just curious if you think run out is a “normal” thing in cordless drills? I ask because I have a nice Bosch drill and it had wobble so I sent it back to them and the new chuck still seems to have a little bit. I thought about picking up this Dewalt but if it’s the same idk if it’s worth it.

    Great review! I have been trying to figure out if I should go with the 996 or the 796... I'm primarily a handyman, and could definitely benefit from the more compact size and weight of the 796... but is the smaller size worth the sacrifice in power and the 3 speed trans? What would your 2 cents be

    i have the dcd796 and dcf887 and i thing that dcd996 would complete my dewalt drill/drive yellow platform!!!do you feel the drill power as if it is like lets say into 100~110Nm area!?!?!?do the makita and milwaukee premium hammer drills feel like more powerful than dcd996!?!?and if the are,i think that 3gears helps the lower power output of this drill!is it right?

    • @WorkshopAddict
      @WorkshopAddict  8 лет назад

      The three speed help to get you more torque for the middle speeds, around 1400 rpm. I feel that this drill has the same power the New Milwaukee has at 1200 inch pounds. That is specified at more than the Makita. I will put my "reputation" on the line and say that for a drill, it rocks and you should not be disappointed. I cannot tell you exactly how it compares because that would take equipment I don't have. But if you watch our videos, you don't see me using a side handle much. I did with this drill!

    • @WorkshopAddict
      @WorkshopAddict  5 лет назад

      possible that it could stop and clutch setting 1 and 2 in low range might see too much torque for the drill and stop it. Those are VERY light settings and a full power trigger squeeze would not be normal.

      +WorkshopAddict hello,I've been waiting for this beast for a month and finally my supply house could order them so I ordered the dck299p2 with the 996 and the 887 impact, and waited for a couple weeks till it came in. I was expecting something awesome and when it finally showed up both the drill and impact had problems, I was so disappointed. About to give up on Dewalt. I returned them 30 mins later. Today I went back and picked up a new kit, hoping the first one was a dud. I got it out and found the most awesome, most powerful drill and impact I ever used. My other drill was the 995, and I've used the new Milwaukee gen2. They are so well built. The impact is incredible, even speed 1 which I was skeptical about has its place when used properly. The one thing which I agree with you on is the forward and reverse switch on the drill is a little soft, it could be a little stiffer. But overall Dewalt has hit a home run with these. And the light is incredible. And to you great review.

      That little impact is a gem. Been using the heck out of it for 2 years now. I'm waiting patiently for my impact to arrive. I bought the one with hard case charger and two 5 ah batteries. Can't wait to try it out.
