A thing to consider is that large undersea data centers could be environmental hotspots because they would be warmer there
Yeah. I once saw in a documentary, if i remember correctly, how marine life (particularly sharks) keep on gathering in the posts of oil rigs. It's difficult to believe that these underwater data centers would have only a "minimal impact".

@@jondonnelly4831the ocean isn't one big equilibrium. It can be warmer in certain areas. What effect that would cause, I don't know.
As a worker at a data center, a very large one, I don't think that this would work very well. I can not begin to imagine what a single 30MW server floor shell running full time in roughly 300k sqft would do to the environment. We have already seen the devastating effects of ocean temperatures rising marginally, I don't even want to begin to imagine what damage a large number of dcs directly heating the ocean would cause.
Brings a whole new meaning to the blue screen of death when you have to send a techy down there.

I imagine if you built this with some kind of "elevator" mechanism (probably thick cables that can unwind to let the server room's buoyancy lift it up) it would also allow it to be periodically serviced much more easily, so you're not trying to sell customers access to 10 year old server technologies (or older, if you didn't go latest-and-greatest on sink day) when the new hotness is on offer from competing companies!
Access security is also a problem. One or two (linear) shaped charges attached to such a container by a diver or robot and you can most likely say goodbye to all the data stored there.
right, but getting to them is a little more difficult, these usually arent buried at 30meters or less, typical diving distance.
so you basically will need a frogman suit to get there. not impossible, but a lot of work and expense for not much gain
same for ROV's. they are expensive. and why would you use that expense for basically very little gain?
@@robertlinke2666 Well the server mentioned in this video is 117ft deep and I could dive down to it with absolute confidence. Obviously, if the server was sunk to a depth beyond recreational diving limits then it would be more secure, but you would likely have to deal with depths greater than 100m before you see satisfactory security results.

@hobog Every computer put in this type of location will be extremely redundant. There are thousands of computers that can fill in if 1 goes down. So anything that fails will just get turned off. The value of each individual computer is not enough to bother fixing.

Yes, let's begin a campaign of warming the oceans to match the atmosphere. Uh oh, too late, the ocean boiled away and the atmospheric pressure crushes everything.
If the thermal emissions are high enough, it could totally ruin the adjacent ecosystem. Dumping cooling water (secondary and tertiary loop) into the ocean near nuclear powerplants has killed coral reefs. Not generating so much thermal waste should be the bigger focus.

Not much can be done about thermal waste when we're talking about servers in data centers. The only hope we can have is that the oceans aren't treated as free real estate by tech companies. There needs to be a cut-off point to how many underwater servers are allowed, or else we'll end up boiling our oceans and generating unnatural amounts of clouds that heavily disrupt our naturally occurring weather systems.
That’s exactly what Google wants to do, and it makes perfect sense to put servers underwater!!!
Think about it. If you can have an offshore solar, wind, and wave farm, you can maximize usefulness with a server farm, algae/kelp/seaweed, fish farming, plus a server farm for hosting! On top of storing all that power in the form of hydrogen or batteries (transportable renewable energy)
That’s not even including coral farming or scuba dives/tourism!

While a good idea on paper, I have a feeling that it would end up causing a lot of issues. A few servers wouldn't be a problem, but if history is anything to go by...less then reputable companies tend to ruin good things in the name of saving a few bucks. One obvious issue that can come about would be saturating an area with massive heat generating server farms. While I doubt it would cause any global problems, to much heat in a single area would assuredly cause a rise in temperature. Another issue would be pollution. Once they find cheaper (aka, worse materials to use) I doubt it will be worth salvaging these and removing them from the ocean once they are no longer useful. And everyone knows if it isn't worth disposing of properly it will just sit their and waste away because some companies won't bother spending the money to deal with it.
It is also not good for maintanance. Having a datacenter close to the sea, water cooled and a big radiator in the sea would be better, since access to the datacenter for humans would be practical and a radiator that sits even in water that is 30C is still fine if the radiator is big enough. And if it isnt, you jsut need a smaller auxiliary one that uses little electricity.
I was thinking that the warmer, less dense water would rise to the top, increasing ocean oxygen circulation - which is a good thing, especially as ocean oxygen circulation is actually slowing down right now.
Governments could solve that issue by requiring a cleanup tax where the company would have to pay extra for putting their servers in the ocean, but after they leave it there, the government would take care of taking them out and recycling.
Kinda like some countries deal with plastics by introducing a recycling tax on plastic packaging.

One thing about lower Temperatures: They even save on Energy on the Server. Only by 5% or so when you go from 70°C to 40°C but it is noticeable and as long as you have an endless heatdump you can increase the coolant flow to reduce the temps. Biggest Problem is that 10 years are optimistic, i would say 5 years would be the swap time. But it may even become a haven for fish: A Server underwater Farm would provide a no fishing zone with lot of warmer water for plankton etc. So lot of food. The Discruption of moving in and out a Server every 2-4 weeks won't be such a Problem. It's like the Offshore Windparks, a save haven for fish.
This has to be one of the hardest channels to keep going but content like this shows you can still pull it off. Every now and then even I know what you're talking about but at times I do not and I enjoy learning. Like an old person. I'm not old but other people might think I am. Some people are stupid.

What’s the thermal throughput of a single thread of graphene? Perhaps tying it to a rock and throwing it into the depths would be more practical than pumping cold water onshore, or researching Gungan shield technology for aquatic dev ops.

It was a bit disappointing that SUPREME COMMANDER didn’t have solar, wind, geothermal, and TiDAL generators like TOTAL ANNIHILATION did. As it was a pretty slick trick to build an underwater base with your commander. Especially with that underwater fusion reactor and Mass converters. I guess that’s what you get for making your game Gas Powered.
I mean this was a company that made their game single threaded (albeit with some sub threads) and 32bit (so it was mem-capped at 2 GB) when quad core processors were already a thing.

The great lakes would be a great place for this. Fresh water is colder at shallow waters and isn't conductive. The metal shipwrecks in the the great lakes are very well preserved.
True and it would make the lake water warmer so better for tourists.
Not sure about the fish, but maybe with some control you could use this to increase biodiversity by adding tropical fish to non-tropical zones.

Honestly, considering the amount of heat that is generated in data centers around the world, it seems like an absolute waste to not use this heat for example in a district heating system
District heating requires a lot of highly concentrated heat. The Data Centers do not provide that heat and the heat they provide is very disperse. We did the numbers at out engineering firm!
Actually, that's already happening in some parts of the world on a small scale - including right here in Metro Vancouver. It's a much better method than dumping heat into the ocean IMO.
I would think maybe something like keeping subway tunnels a bit warmer in the winter.

Well, instead of dumping the data center heat and the HVAC machinery heat, you would dump only the data center heat.
Or, to be more precise, you would dump less heat, because you would need less power to cool the data center.
I guess in theory, the water would boil enough to (infinitesimally) lower the sea level and produce more clouds helping to protect the planet fro global warming, but they would need to be on the surface. At that point to combat climate change would have large ships and cruises have their boilers and engines in the water...

If Datacenter are used for heating water of cities that would be a tons of gaz and electricity not spend on this human need. It's a far more useful concept, and even more if that heated water is given free to the people (or at the same price of cold water).

some of the companies i worked with had a 3 year renewal cycle. servers were replaced every 3 years.. i was constantly building new servers with obviously better specs and decommisioning and removing the older servers. how are they going to keep the servers for 10 years? needs change over time ....

I'm more interested with data centers being used to provide district heating. A city in Finland gets like 40% of their heating from datacenters.
