ride a lectric xp 3.0 with the pwr sensor.. ( you get a number of AMPS per PAS level, not MPH. so i get power all the way to 28 mph top speed when peddling. . ) its very smooth for a cadence. love it. has zero start as long as you are pas 1-5.
I've been riding Electrically Assisted Bicycles for a decade as my only personal source of transportation, living miles from town in the Florida heat and traffic. I lost my DL from seizures back then and I don't really need one now that I've got them sorted out. They used to be big and heavy with lead batteries and only about twenty miles of range when I first started. I got a modern one nearly identical as the Engwe E-bike, but it's a Doulve. I've never seen another bicycle of this brand, and shortly after purchase I couldn't buy another one when I realized what a steal of a deal I got for $585 after tax and shipping. The differences are basically most of the wrongs done right on this bike.
First of all it only weighs 57 pounds with a 720 watt 48 volt battery and a 500 watt motor, that will accelerate up a steeper hill with one hundred pounds worth of trailer behind it. The brakes are cable actuated and the cables and wires are very well wrapped without any folding issues. The battery locks in with a key to prevent unwanted slide-out or theft and it does not rattle around at all. It has a wireless FOB to turn it on and operate the anti-theft alarm. The electronic horn has a much better sound. It also has narrow, stiff and thick anti-puncture tires that have served me well as I reach one thousand miles on it this month, getting my first flat tire nearing the end of my ride home from Church last night. The bicycle is a white and black mix color scheme with grey rear rack, handle bars, and seat post, black seat, pedals, brakes, and shifters, with chrome fenders, crank arms and sprockets. There is no rear suspension, but the rest of the frame, fork, handlebars, and seat post look and function identically. The wheels are black five solid thick-thin spokes with a slight curve. It is a seven speed and the first gear is great for unassisted hill climbing, but the top gear has to be pedaled a little too quickly to assist or boost the top twenty miles per hour un-assisted speed limiter. However, it's not terrible for what it is. The chain can jump of the front sprocket from the extreme angles of the rear gears when backpedaling too quickly, and the chain gets stuck in the guard. I've been thinking of adding a two, maybe three gear sprocket and shifting hardware for the front crank. It looks like it would almost bolt right on.
Because I do use mine more like a mini motorcycle than a bicycle and out on it for no less than six miles to get anywhere and back two or three times a week for the last ten years, I don't care about the quirky assist programming in these controllers either, but that's not what I bought mine for. It is a good workhorse too, and the folding up has been surprisingly useful and you get used to the quirks. That angled bar below the seat post is handle for general lifting of the bike.
I did have to change the brake pads almost right away from wearing out, but the upgrades are still going strong to this day. I added a motorcycle lock box with a flat-plate push button mount for the rear rack. That is one of the best upgrades in the world for what I do. The trailer was another thing, allowing me to carry fuel tanks, groceries, tools, and medium sized appliances without much effort at all. It accelerates pretty quick and has a grip throttle and if you pedal it when taking off, you have to be careful not to do a wheelie. Despite the narrow tire and handlebars, that may get replaced, the bicycle does operate off road well enough and it corners at high speed on the pavement. Hill and curb climbing is not an issue with this bicycle. To get what I got in specs again, if economy shopping online, would actually cost about eight hundred dollars, but I only see fat tires on everything when I search now.
I put up a video with the bicycle when I got the new trailer if you want to see what the rig look like. If you watch it though, just remember that the trunk has been changed to a color matching slightly bigger, but more aerodynamic box. It actually goes faster with better range with the bigger trunk just because of the shape!
My biggest complain is the blinkers are rear only, and you can't actually see them over the tail light bulbs. I'd like to just tap into those wires with separate blinker assemblies front and rear, with the tops of the front see-through so I can readily tell when a blinker has been left on. The horn button doesn't work anymore, but it's probably just the button contact. In the same assembly the headlight switch started failing too, and messing around with it got it to work again for now. I have the same issues with bolts, especially on the rear rack and the right crank arm coming loos over time and routinely having to tighten them up. The front fork suspension is a touch loose where the shafts go into each other as a result of poor manufacturing. Finally, there is no drink holder and you are so right about these things being so absurd to not even have the provision for one!
Oh yeah, the bicycle can carry two people with fold out foot stands on the rear for a passenger if you want to install an optional seat cushion on the rear rack. You can even get one with a backrest!
I agree with you on the fat tire thing. It seems like all the cheap chinese ebikes have them so buyers think they are serious offroad machines. Excess unsprung weight is terrible.
Thanks for the thoughtful review. I had no idea that the throttle on some e-bikes were basically on-off switches like the cheapest Razor. That is totally unacceptable for any e-transportation over $200, let alone over $1,000. It’s good to get a review from someone with solid mechanical and bicycle knowledge , but not an e-bike expert. You focused on things that matter to those who may actually consider an e-bike.
It's not as on and off like a razor. It's more like a low/medium/high/max extended pulse depending on what assist setting, speed of travel, and acceleration rate. However, it is not a gradual or variable increase when engaging, so it is on and off in that sense. I found using the throttle to take off and make speed changes makes the problem go away for me.
A couple ebike review pages i follow use a readily available plastic bin to load and unload/store folding ebikes and they test if the bikes fit in the bins they use during reviews. Think large plastic storage tub without the lid. I bought a lectric xpeak high step this spring and love it, it's great on city streets and off road, i just took it to where i used to mountain bike in my younger years and it didn't miss a beat whether i was climbing loose rock or bombing down a rutted trail even with the 26x4 tires oh and it was 1399 when i bought it and it came with 2 48v 14ah batteries. Just saying if you're looking for something that was built for off-road for under 1500.

From what I understand, e-bikes are limited to 750watt but the rules don't specify whether that's nominal or peak, so they're all rated as 750w nominal because nominal is just arbitrary.

Here in Florida, to operate without a Driver's License, Vehicle Registration, and Insurance it must be classified as an Electrically Assisted Bicycle. One of the provisions is the motor size cannot be bigger than one horsepower, which is about seven hundred watts. That is why you see that rating so much. The speed limit of un-assisted operation is twenty miles per hour on level ground in this state, in some states or countries it is twelve or fifteen and maybe five hundred watts is the limit there, but I'm not sure about the rating part in other parts. The pedals must be functional and used to begin accelerating the bicycle, however that is something that I violate on the regular when taking off and it hasn't gotten me into trouble yet. I did get pulled over doing twenty-four miles per hour on one of my bicycles way back, so there was one officer picky about that around here and the Judge let me go, telling the officer to leave me alone.
Other provisions are that you have to be over sixteen years old and wear a helmet. All bicycles manual or powered must have lights at night. If you have a Driver's License you do not need a helmet and you can choose to register your bicycle as a motorized vehicle which takes away the un-assisted speed limit.
There you go, now you know.

Do these not have brake switches that cut assist with any braking? That’s so sketchy
Yes, they do have switches that cut power when you pull either brake lever. As someone with experience, I can tell you that the unexpected sudden strong pull from the motor can be jarring to your senses and the delay in reaction times and such cause you to a bit further down the path than you expected when you reacted simply because the motor put you there. Then you have to slam on the brakes to make up for lost distance which reduces steering ability on softer surfaces, and you get what you saw in the video.
I can also tell you that with the quirky programming of the assisted mode, sometimes just rolling the bike a mile or two an hour will trigger the motor to take off for it's programmed three second burst before re-evaluating if your continuing to put pressure on the pedals to keep the bicycle from decelerating to decide to continue applying power, or at least that's what I've put together. Slamming on the brake is the only way to keep it from taking off on you, but the experience is much the same for me even on pavement at such a low speed, it's just a much shorter distance.
There would be trouble if they made these E-bikes so that the motor and brakes could be powered at the same time, especially with the automatic assist modes that didn't exist when I first started riding EAB's. You could wear out or damage your motor and brakes, and run the possibility of the motor overpowering the brakes. I imagine following this standard avoids lawsuits.

Btw, Here in London those Engwe folders are popular with the food delivery guys. For the reasons you outlined in the video, I have no idea why this is.

Neither one of these bike are designed for that trail and I would expect them to both perform poorly. The Denago seems like the better built bike and probably does ok on pavement. I did the same straps with my folding ebike makes it so much easier to handle in and out of the car. Also if you can take the battery off folding and lifting is much better.

Back when folding ebikes were 500 bucks and you could walk them into a subway train the design make sense, not that many of them are fat tires and weight about as much as a full size mountain bike the only reason to have a folding mechanism is either you have a gigantic SUV or you just need a way to store it in your garage without taking up too much space. Some folding Ebikes to have the latching thing incorporated and even have a handle to move then around while folded, why they're not on every one today is beyond me.
the problem with ebike reviews from random channels is that it's always ads. it's not just automotive youtubers though.
they then get greedy with them and 25% of their content ends up being reviews of the 'best ebike'. then they go through the talking points of max speed etc, neglect to mention if you have your bike that fast it'll need insurance, neglect that the people buying it will end up with the limits on the fw, neglect to compare it actually to anything because it's against the brief or because they know they wont get another free ebike in 2 weeks if they do that.
750w is pretty common and it's a legal reason. if the bike shows bigger might not mean that it's not 750w, might be other way around. might be 500, who knows since people don't test them.
