- Food and Drink sent a team to Périgord to sniff out the story of how the particular delicacy of the black truffle arrives via the French countryside to the fine dining establishments and home dinner tables of the UK.
Colloquially known as the black diamond, the underground fungus is found between December and April with the aid of dogs or pigs.
Clip taken from Food and Drink, originally broadcast on BBC Two, Thursday 12 April, 1984.

I'm just trying to wrap my head around the fact that 1984 was 40 years ago!
I know right ? In 1984 40 years before that was 1944 2nd world war, scary
@@Thevrretroshow1 True, it's sobering to recall how, in 1984 there was a major commemoration of the D-Day landings, recalling a different time in history. Perhaps it's just personal, but to me - 1984 does not seem so distant.
wtf. Why put the dog in a bag.
I'm assuming it was for the scooter ride. Very silly.
@@algrant5293 hahaha probably
I thought it was a bag of truffles . How once you realise the dog is in there , it becomes clear. He doesn’t want the dog to know the location . This way the dog want go to the location hunting truffles on its own.
You should see where he keeps his wife.

The Forestry and Forest Products Research Institute of Japan has announced that it has successfully grown truffles, a highly prized and expensive delicacy, using artificial methods. This breakthrough raises hopes that Japanese consumers will soon be able to enjoy locally grown truffles, which are currently imported from other countries. However, the institute cautions that it will take some time to commercialize the artificially cultivated truffles, and they aim to achieve this goal within the next 10 years.
Poor dog…

Quite a bit of money in those days (£20 a truffle) - my mother could buy the weekly shop for 6 people for £5
I was hoping Keith Floyd might somehow materialise half cut lol. Great video nonetheless.
Very interesting video

this video is high on entertainment. dog travelling on a bike, in a bag. sheep discussing what, exactly, the dog is doing. apparently they don't know. and the word 'trrrrooofff'. that's how the french pronounce truffle. i did have truffle once, at a posh restaurant. not sure what the fuss is about. perhaps i had a duff truffle.
Were you wearing a duffel coat at the time?
It was more interesting when they used pigs to find truffles. I read that the pigs liked to eat them though, so dogs are better to use.
How can a dog be so faithful after being stuffed into a sack? Silly man!
You think a dog is moe thankful and happy spending most of its time in an apartment?
@@octap79 than tied up in a sack? Yeah I’d say so.
*Puts the dog in his bag.
*Puts truffles in his jacket pockets.
*Gets around the countryside on a motor scooter.
Surely his life, and the transportation of the dog and the truffles, could have been made easier with the purchase of a truck (?)
C'est la vie.
Do you know how many truffles he would need to find to pay for a truck.
@@unnamedchannel1237 about 40 if they were £20 each (as mentioned). £800 for a 2nd hand truck in 1984 seems reasonable.
@@Mkbshg8 Wow. There's nothing trifle about truffles is there!
Or just a C2, he’s not lugging tonnes around…
What the hell 😱 why put his dog in the bag like that? Vile human being...
Why? The dog was okay and it’s a safe way to carry the dog on a scooter.
That's the French for you!!
No need for hysterics.. Clearly the dog is into it.
He's just working up the courage to try it with his wife.
The dog didn't seem to mind all that much.
Bet this french tradition is nearly dead now.
You mean putting dogs in a bag?
