Just got my first clarinet. 69 year old man will try and play a gift from my son and daughter in law. Excellent video. Easy to follow.

John, Thank you. I am a 62 year old jazz singer-guitarist who is beginning clarinet. This helped a lot. I've taught guitar for many years and I feel fortunate - and humbled- to recollect the "beginner's" mind. Thanks again and good luck to all of your students. Peace

Just turned 71 and decided I'd like to learn to play a woodwind instrument and my grandson gave up on his clarinet. Your video instruction is a great first step. I can show up for my first lesson tomorrow already able to play the basic scale. You are saving me money by covering some basic information so I can hit the deck running - THANKS!

Loosely hang the ligature over the mouthpiece BEFORE carefully slipping the reed UNDER the ligature & against the mouthpiece table. Adjust reed then tighten ligature screws. This will prevent accidently nicking the reed if you put the ligature on AFTER setting the reed to the MP.

i know you probably know by now but i'm just saying for other people it takes time for you to be able to produce a proper sound as you need to learn the correct mouth positions, the angle of the clarinet and also the amount of air you need to use when blowing so you can't expect to be able to produce a proper sound straight away just keep trying :)

You need the lightly SMILE at the corners of your mouth to help the THROAT TONES play up to pitch.
He is doing this with his mouth but somehow fails to tell you exactly what he is doing with his mouth.

Nice video! I'm sorely tempted to buy a clarinet I recently saw in a 2nd hand store for $50. Learning sax is on my bucket list (well, clarinet has a reed, too, right?). I got an alo recorder last year but it's so hard not to overblow the low notes; you have to play at a whisper :-(

You need to lightly WET the cork joints, in your mouth, after greasing them, BEFORE pressing them into the other joint.

He fails to mention how to use & BLOW from the DIAPHRAGM muscle inside your MID SECTION to produce the rich, sold, clear sound that he is producing. Producing an air steam with & from your DIAPHRAGM is the most important & significant element of good horn playing & also good SINGING. An entire video should be offered on this subject. His sound is coming from his DIAPHRAGM muscle, not just from his CHEST muscles.
