This series of vids might be described as 'basic' but they are extremely effective made more so because the commentary is precise and clear - out of all the boxing tuition vids I have seen, this series is one of the best, if not the best !
See, this is what I don't understand. At 3:57, you say "if I try catch the punches like they fo in the Matrix, I guarantee I'm gonna get punched". Which, 1st of all, that's not how they do in the Martix, but most importantly, why? You're doing the same movement you wrre doing before, its just this time, its further away from the head, but its the same. If anything, it is safer, because if you miss the punch, you can move back before it hits you, or if they punch your hand, it doesn't connect to your head so the energy is not transmitted to the head.
Thanks for commenting and like you, I love the question of WHY. This video is more from a boxing perspective, where your opponent may get into very close range and stay there.(because you're not allowed to take him down). There are also ropes that will limit you from going too far back to get out of range. In close, he will be able to throw multiple punches in combination that can easily find there way around an extended guard. If your arm is extended too far out front to block a jab, for example, it will be much harder to block a right hook thrown over the top of your extended arm. The reason "why" it's safer to keep your defense in tight and the motion of the blocks short, is that it will be easier to keep your shoulders up high to protect your chin, keep your elbows in close to your core to protect your body and it will also be quicker to move your arms only a short distance to block one punch after another. It is not only me that will recommend this but if youtube Tyson, Mayweather, Ali, Frazier (who all know way more than I do) they all do the exact same thing...they let the punches come to them and don't extend their arms out to block the punches. Thanks again for commenting because I'm sure other people have the same question :)
The best step by step boxing videos on RUclips I love the way they are shot. Feels like you're in the ring, especially with the 3rd person views. Thank you.
This will help alot of beginners. I've been doing muay thai for 2 years now, and when i started I had lots of questions about defense that I discovered on my own through sparring. My gym drills parries alot, but I think the shell is much more reliable, using the guard in crafty ways to stop shots. I, and most of the other guys in fact, spar using a high guard.
this is a GOOD video on blocking. I already learned some of this but i like how you break it down and talk about the techniques! GREAT video! Perfect Tutorial.
Hi. Just about when i was about to start performing boxing drills like this in the video with an opponent, being amateur (i am 2 months only in a boxing club) and the Covid-19 shut down the fight clubs. The trainer put us in pairs like in this video , performing alternatively defence & immediate come back atacks with a 1-2 strikes, with defender blocking the ace with the glove and the two with the elbow, and then he strikes back same 1-2 combo.... Our first ever punches and fist contacts on our bodies... The feeling was amazing, the pressure of the opponent's strike is so intense and it really gave the taste of what's to come in the sparring.. we can;t wait till the fight club will open soon, hopefully by the end of November..
This is better than 99% of the other Boxing tutorials out there!!!! Good, clear Voice Over description of what to do & not do, & excellent camera work. Solid production values. My only (minor) criticism, is that I would have one of the fighters in a contrasting color, not both dressed in Black. Also, if you are going to wear Black tops, then make sure that BOTH boxers gloves are White to make the CONTRAST really POP out! I would (maybe) bring the camera a tiny bit closer on SOME shots, but that depends if you're trying to emphasize the upper or the entire body. But thumbs up for this excellent Video. Whoever was involved put in a lot of thought & attention & work into this & knew what they were doing. Your work & effort is GREATLY appreciated by me & I'm sure many, many others who've been disappointed in so many obviously amateur tutorials made apparently by guys whose sole qualification is they owned a camcorder, a computer & had a basement or gym available to them - but needed to learn "Basic Film Making 101" Thanks again!!! . - - DJ, NY, USA.

02:55 when you block a punch this way, isn't there a chance that you hit yourself by hand recoil ? how about keeping hands near enough to cover the face ? please answer and thanks for great job you do.
There is always a chance but honestly is pretty slim as your hand should be stiff when you catch the jab, I'm trying to think if I've ever been hit by the recoil but i can't say that i have. You will find that Lennox lewis, Holyfield and Mayweather, for example, will catch the jab in the same fashion. Also long as you catch it with some stiff resistance in your arm you should be fine. Hey Mike! I'm going to karate and we mostly use the more pretty looking blocks rather than effective ones. I like going there but I feel like my trainer would disapprove of me using the blocks demonstrated in this video even if proven more effective. What do you think about this and how should I handle it? (I understand that I'm going to a karate dojo and the blocks we use are part of karate I'm just interested in hearing your thoughts)
Thanks for watching and commenting. I also started with a karate background. I loved the discipline and the artistry of it. The style of karate was kyokushin. We often had sparring matches. Once I learn how to block properly using this method, it was much easier. I stopped getting hit. I also love grappling and kick boxing as well. I’m a big advocate of Bruce lee who was a true MMA fighter way ahead of his time. In his book the Tao of jeet kun do he advises the stick with what is simple and effective. These blocks don’t look fancy but they work. Or look at GSP who is arguably the greatest mma fighter of all time. He blocks using this method as well. In your case, perhaps just try them out without revealing where you learned them from. When those in your class see that your defence is impregnable .. they won’t question it 🙂🙂🙂🙂
@@fightyourwayfit Hey Mike, thanks for responding! I see in this and your other videos, your elbows are always slightly away from your body. In another video I heard the advice of resting/gluing your arms/elbows on the side of your rib cage. I found it really helps with shoulder fatigue. What do you think about it?
I think that rule number one must be .... do what feels most natural and comfortable to you. You will find great boxers that keep a very tight stance (like winky wright) and you will find others like will have their elbows similar to mine (like Mike Tyson) or others that will have their lead arm and elbow hanging lower and away from the body (like Roy Jones).... others like Naseem Hamed that had both hands and elbow low and away. As long as your shoulder can come up high to protect your chin and you can roll and angle your body to catch body punches you will be fine. Bottom line is to try a few different methods and choose which is most comfortable for you and your body type.
Maybe this is a weird question, but do I keep my fist closed when blocking the jab or try to open the hand? Because I always kept my fist closed, but in my last training I noticed some pain in my fingers after being hit on the fingers dor some time.
There are no weird questions :) Keep your hand open and try to black with as much of your palm as possible as that will give you a larger surface area to catch the jab and it also won't hurt your fingers
There are really three ways; 1-you can throw your own jab to stop his onslaught as he is punching...that takes timing. 2- use your footwork to pivot off and retreat to a safe distance 3- Step in to smother his punches and then counter once you are inside. I often box fighters that are much faster than myself and usually choose the 3rd option of staying close and smothering his shots. I know it seems counterintuitive but it works. Kick-boxers can block the punches the exact same way…. yet I would be mindful about leaning into any kicks. In the future I plan to do a whole series of videos on kickboxing which will include how to block the punches and kicks. Thank you so much for taking a time to watch😎😎😎😎
I dont understand, that's basically what I'm doing and it still hurts to block my shots, even more than taking a punch. Could you please tell me the most commonly beginners mistakes if it comes to blocking?
Quite often people will try too hard to go out and meet the punch to block it. That increase the impact of the punch. Try letting the punches come to you and block at the last moment. That will give you a split second more to react to the shot and the impact may not be as hard. Thank you for watching 😎😎
When you block is your own glove suppose to hit your face? I just learnt how to block today and I keep getting hit by my own glove. It was a block for a jab and I had 2 forearms in front of me blocking that jab. What am I doing wrong?
joesr31 thanks for commenting; The short answer is no your not supposed to get hit by your own glove. The easiest way to block the jab is the way in this video. Use your rear hand and catch the jab with your palm. Bring your hand out only a few inches and make sure that your arm is stiff. That should kill the momentum of your opponent’s jab :)
I tried this method but when my opponents hit my, no matter how hard I try to keep the glove there, it would move back and the back of my glove would hit my face, its not a hard hit but i kind of stuns me
Yup, I know that can be annoying and frustrating. You could try perhaps extending your rear arm out just a little more to meet the jab. Keep that arm stiff but leave your upper body a little more lax so that when the jab hits your stiff rear arm, it will cause your upper body to swivel back a few inches so that you don't get that ricochet to the face.
But if my opponent drives me into a corner and uses straight punches combining with hooks and uppercuts. What should i do? ( suppose that i can't use kicks )
Great question; you definitely don't want to stay there as he will just continue to pound on you. You could try to fire back to stop his onslaught (watch the how to counter punch video) but your best option will be to shell up and move towards the outside of his lead arm to smother his punches (you can see how to shell at the end of this video). I know its sounds crazy and your brain will be telling you not to do it... but its a lot safer in that scenario to explode in on your opponent and have your lead shoulder touching the outside of his lead shoulder ...clinch if you have to and walk him back. (we also have a video on how to clinch). Try it and you will see that it works : )

Can’t u slip the jab or roll for hooks???
Absolutely. I prefer to slip or roll. This was strictly a blocking tutorial. Thanks for watching. 🙂🙂😎🥊
When you block is your own glove suppose to hit your face? I just learnt how to block today and I keep getting hit by my own glove. It was a block for a jab and I had 2 forearms in front of me blocking that jab. What am I doing wrong?
joesr31 thanks for commenting;
The short answer is no your not supposed to get hit by your own glove.
Thanks will try that
But if my opponent drives me into a corner and uses straight punches combining with hooks and uppercuts.
Try it and you will see that it works : )
nice answer, thank you so much
