I never realized that. The reason all the Nahobino themes (Abdiel, Tsukuyomi, Nuwa) are in compound time signatures is because they're all two beings fused into one!
The battle - Demi-Fiend is a remix of the battle theme of Nocturne, which in the remake mix had *seven* different solos as opposed to just the one you heard here
Gotta say to ya Dan. I am very happy that I was able to get the Shin Megami Tensei series Upvoted for you to react to how amazing it is. I am a huge fan of Mythology and the Cultures that are referenced in each series but it's also amazing to see how talented the Writers/Composers/Performers are and SMT will always have a Special place in my Heart. AND I WILL HEE HO FOREVER!
Had a great time watching someone react to this OST, learned some really cool things like the "devil's interval". Can't wait for future streams (and Chrono Trigger!)
The whole Shin Megami Tensei series has amazing music. The 4th one has an amazing ost, and surprisingly had it's music called forgettable in an IGN review.
Also if you want more context for the Battle - eon - songs: This is a Lucifer who has fulfilled his goal, having now absorbed God's powers and knowledge, only to come to the realisation that he is still a captive within a system, an endless cycle that won't bring him the true freedom he seeks. So at the very end he fights against the protagonist in his new true form so the protagonist will absorb his power and knowledge and form a new universe free of this system. And surprisingly he doesn't really care what sort of a universe you create, whether that be one where the God he slayed returns and takes over rule again, a universe filled with different pantheon of deities or one free of all deities altogether. He just wants to be freed from it all. Also if you enjoyed this ost, you really should check IV and IV Final/Apocalypse, as those are mainly by Ryota Kozuka, V's main composer. SMT 3 meanwhile is mostly by Shoji Meguro, and he composed a lot of other MegaTen titles as well like Digital Devil Saga and Strange Journey, Persona 3 - 5 being probably his most well known works.
I ended up Law on my blind run. I was kind of stunned by his motive, my reaction was "Ya know Louis, if what you wanted all along was Suicide-By-Cop, all you had to do was ask."
I'm on my final run of the game. Been putting it off for months. I finished the first 3 runs in like 3 weeks after the game came out and kinda burnt myself out lop. But i did listen to Battle Eon and it can't wait to experience it in game.
Thank you so much for going through this soundtrack, and I’m so glad that you enjoyed every song of this entire soundtrack as enormous and varied as it was, the insight and religious/cultural references you talked about some song might have were very interesting and informative. I felt like It wasn’t very much talked about or praised. My expectations were through the roof coming of the heels of the two previous entries IV and apocalypse when the game came out and i was still blown away by this OST. Again Thank you so much for making it happening, it was a lot of fun.
And one last thing: If you wanted the Demi-Fiend theme to have more shredding, its SMT Imagine version has more of that along with a much faster tempo.
Thank you for this, really gave me a new appreciation for this already amazing OST! The final credits theme always chokes me up for personal reasons. Hope you get around to other SMT soundtracks, this franchise means so much to me and me seeing it getting the praise it deserves really warms my heart.
Basically a riff is a repeated note pattern that is intended to work as consistent accompaniment, while a lick is a short specified note pattern that can exist outside of that context but can also work within it.
I really enjoyed all this series, i am so glad you really enjoyed the whole lot of the soundtrack, and it was fresh and pretty cool to hear a lot more details, like the one in "Battle -eon-"
I’m glad to see appreciation for mainline SMT, it often gets overshadowed by Persona especially when it comes to the music. SMT IV is another game in the series with a really great OST, looking forward to when it’s eventually on the channel.
Damn I missed it live! Anyway, SMTV Main Theme/Credits is my absolute favorite track in all of megaten. I felt the same emotions as Everywhere At The End Of Time but condensed into five minutes (after a 100+ hour playthrough on hard). It's the first recognizable tune from the first SMTV trailer and it only plays at the end of the journey, to reflect. Sexy tbh.
And so we come to the end of all things. After the civil war in Disc 4, the three dominant egos are here in Disc 5 to decide the fate of the world... And beyond. And that's just the first half of the disc. After we ascend to the throne of Heaven... We have a bonus challenge where we descend to Hell... Thank you so much for hosting this series. Both the reactions and the little lessons (loved learning about tritones) were amazing. I am subscribed for many more!
@@MusicTheoryforGamers One of the first riffs I played from memory as a kid. Didn't even know it was The Beatles song, just knew the tune and started playing it. Good times.
Loved watching this series of videos! Subscribed and will keep up with your content for sure. Can't wait for the SMT IV react, hopefully you get to hear the final boss theme of IV: Apocalypse as well!
53:52 oh...wow... SMTV Ending Spoilers: I guess it is, this theme only plays once in the game, at the very end, and what occurs during the ending(s) is that the world is overwritten to your vision. Essentially you restart the world as God and it's formed to your beliefs (which varies per ending). Never even put it together that that could be a rewinding sound, that's amazing, even better that it plays at the end, right when the protagonist completes his journey in the ending cutscene
Yooo late to the party but Dan I got be honest with you….. at 1:14:25 to 1:14:38 got me almost laughing because of your reaction to the text to speech.
I've been lurk-watching these and lot other of your OST reactions for a some time now and this is my first post on the channel, but... Just wanted to make a public apology. Personally I don't know a squat 'bout music theory and stuff like that, but I do enjoy watching reactions to tracks I know of or "jam to" a lot. As said, I've been watching a lot of your OST reactions lately and I always felt that there were not much "reacting" going on. MIght be I've just seen the "bad ones" (for the lack of better word on top of my head, if ya don't mind) where most of it was usually just; "this next one is called--" followed by some headpopping, followed by "Okay, so the next one is----" with an occasional "Oh yeah!" -ever now and then and then repeat. Thus I always got the impression there wasn't much reacting going on or that you weren't paying enough attention to the songs playing at all. ...Whaaat I'm going around here is that generally it felt like a "bad reaction" if I'm allowed to be that straight for a sec. HOWEVER... It was the SMT V OST reaction that made me realize this was only due my expectations and miss-judgement and that although I wasn't getting the "reactions" I was looking for it definitely didn't mean ya weren't paying attention. I found myself proven wrong about that with the constant "we've heard this before in disc X" -that ya made, heck, there was even a reference to Phoenix Wright OST's so... yeah... On top of that, the fact about the track at 55:40 was actually really interesting and.. yeah, honestly it DID blow my mind about the track. The track is used on a place where ya fuse the demons together to make a new ones to gain more power to fight against your foes in the game and, like... Yeah, knowing this tidbit now made me appreciate the track on a whole new light now. Knowing there's actual deep lore in the track besides it being just the "generic mystical sounding track" in the background. So yeah... This is my first post on this channel and as said, it's to make an apology of miss-judging ya content VERY much. Although some could argue I never wrote any negative claims or sort to apologize over it just.. felt like something needed to do after this one. So - once again - here is my public letter of an apology. (...Aaaand back to lurking mode. 🥷)
56:40 Yep Basically the game follows your main character who accidentally crosses into a post apocalyptic version of his city and its infested with demons, basically in the lore the world had a system of rotating gods, a god would gain power then would be slain be another god and the cycle repeats, when the Christan god gained power he demanded there be no other gods before him, this split the gods into a demon (life) part a human (knowledge) part, Lucifer killed god and took his knowledge causing this condemnation to be lifted but just prior the world god was watching over was destroyed so he made a copy which is where your MC has been living, the world you cross into is the old destroyed world, you're attacked by demons but your MCs demon half saves him and you fuse becoming a nahobino basically the purest form of a god, you join an organisation dedicated to upholding the now dead God's laws but after learning he's dead this organisation splits as the other members split up to find their other halves and now it's a race for God's throne and the right to recreate the world how you see fit.
SMT 3 / SMT 4 / SMT 5 (and personally for me - probably due to nostalgia) Persona 3 have the best soundtracks I was ever able to listen to during my gaming years. I can only recommend you listen to all of these at least once even if it’s just in your free time and not for a video Also regarding the Demi fiend battle theme - those distorted noises are ACTUAL lyrics which you read out. Those aren’t *just* demonic chamts. They have meaning.
Did you also do Final Fantasy 14 per any chanc? Ost is a gem. But its difficult because its in the Guiness world records book for longest video game ost. So i would recommend to just review an expansion like Shadowbringers because its complete and i think it has the biggest variety of music styles. I play SMT V atm. Love the ost, love the synths
Awesome vid, as usual. If i may, i'll recommend a couple games to you. Yakuza (Ryu Ga Gotoku) series and Hades. If anyone agrees with either one, i'd like to know.
hey best guitar coach i have a suggestions theres this youtube channel called siivagunner so if you could react to some rips by him that would be great and i dont wanna spoil it its awesome.
I never realized that. The reason all the Nahobino themes (Abdiel, Tsukuyomi, Nuwa) are in compound time signatures is because they're all two beings fused into one!
That is especially wild because traditionally compound meters were thought of that way!
The battle - Demi-Fiend is a remix of the battle theme of Nocturne, which in the remake mix had *seven* different solos as opposed to just the one you heard here

listen ok... ign doesnt know what they are doing, and frankly, video game journalists cant do their job properly
SMT IV has my fav ost 😁

Well there's your problem!
B2 is one of the best battle themes of all time
It's not the 1st time that they dissed a soundtrack
Also if you want more context for the Battle - eon - songs:
This is a Lucifer who has fulfilled his goal, having now absorbed God's powers and knowledge, only to come to the realisation that he is still a captive within a system, an endless cycle that won't bring him the true freedom he seeks. And one last thing:
If you wanted the Demi-Fiend theme to have more shredding, its SMT Imagine version has more of that along with a much faster tempo.
Demi-fiend's theme is a remix of the normal battle theme from smt 3 nocturne
And honestly the normal battle theme sounds even better, plus it has all the different variations. I really hope he gets to react to them.
Thank you for this, really gave me a new appreciation for this already amazing OST! The final credits theme always chokes me up for personal reasons. You have got to chech out digital devil saga’s ost man. It’s so underrated and needs more recognition and love
