All those little paper details are fantastic. I just love the little ship model! Yeah. figuring out how big things are is much easier when you try to relate it to something you're familiar with. I knew the Nellie's cargo bay had to be big enough to seem like a 'jungle' but small enough it could land without being too cumbersome. So I thought a double stacked Big Lots for the cargo bay and add some extra space for engines, bridge and living quarters. I've really got to make a map like yours! Such a great idea. Glad I could help a littlle.

Ideas for rooms onboard the ship might should include:
Officer's Quarters, Crew Quarters, Robot Repair Room, Machine Shop, Ships Store (storeroom), Main Cargo Hold , Life-Raft/EscapePod Bay (for escape pods in case the ship is in danger of destruction!), Launch/Landing Bay, Laboratory/science room, Life Support Center (where oxygen is created and refined), Mess Deck (Mess Hall), Engine Room, Fuel Chambers, Hydroponics/Garden Center, Rec Room, Library, and Sewage Incinerator Room.

The sails could also be solar sails. It's one of the ideas that NASA and others have as a possible way of energy gathering for spaceships in the future. Don't forget a Medbay!

I was thinking the same thing! the solar sails act as both energy gatherers like a solar panel, but there's also the solar winds which can propel the ship the way cloth sails use atmospheric wind on earth. :)

When I look at the map with all the meeting rooms, common and eating areas I wonder, did it have a full crew at one point? And if so, what happened to them? It might be an interesting point for the story to explore how the Captain ended up with just herself, Centauri and robots.

I love sci fi stories that connect time and space (because it’s all wibbly wobbly), as well as stories that connect space with the ocean because there’s just so much we don’t know about the vastness of both.

It’s literally a fin keel. For a ship that goes in the water, it’s a little unusual in that it has a center support that looks like an inverted mast, but some keels do have rudders. Old sailing ships of the kind embedded in this starship might have had several different kinds of keels, but most likely had a full keel that would have run the whole length of the underside of the vessel. This being a starship, the keel could have different functions, including signal array or solar panel. Looks cool!

Thank you so much for the explanation! You would think by now I would be a little better with my ship terminology but I still seem to have to look it up each time. I will definitely try to remember 'Fin Keel'. I really like that term!

      @toomanymonkeys21 Год назад

@@vancouverdollhouseminiatur9668 Yeah, guess I was a little unclear… rudders and keels have all kinds of variations, and all the sailboats had some kind of rudder, natch. (At least, until engines became a thing!) I recently saw a beautiful boat hauled out which had a fin keel like Ara’s that had a rudder built into it! That was cool. I’m so used to thinking of a rudder as only being in the stern, like the kind you’d turn with a tiller. I bet the one with the fin rudder can turn on a dime.

If you have an opportunity to go to the library, I would suggest borrowing and watching a movie called “Treasure Planet”
It is about taking the same timeline that “Treasure Island” took place in, but with futuristic tech, such as the ship that you just built.
The sails in the movie are retractable and are called “SolR Sails”. They absorb the sunlight to give power to the ship.
It is a cartoon movie, so it is a little shorter than regular movies.
I think they did a great job on putting a new spin on an old classic! It might even give you new inspiration to this project.

Kitty litter: How about topping it off with coffee grinds?
If you bake the used grinds at a low temp, to completely dry them out and measure the area circumference of where the kitty litter goes.
Make a frame out of card stock and wrap it in aluminum and add a bottom. (So you could easily peal the frame away from the kitty litter.)
Mix a little bit of mod-podge to coffee grinds to make it lumpy, like kitty litter or better yet, if you have that liquid train scenery model spray glue, just fill the frame with the grinds and lightly narrow focus the spray nozzle and slowly squeeze, so it comes out as a dribble.
Then after it dries, paint it that chalky grey/white.
I would then flip it over and carefully peel away the bottom aluminum and if bottom is still a bit grainy and loose, dribble on more scenic glue.
After drying remove frame and plop it in

So first off most ship modelers start by building like a 10-15 inch version first before trying to shrink or expand their design, so good job starting in the hard place, lol. I love the design it reminds me of the Atlantis ships from the Disney movie Atlantis the lost empire. Their ships were made to look like fish so I guess that's why. Sails wouldn't interfere with space travel, in fact if they are solar sails they would enhance the space travel, could be part of the propulsion system. Something you might want to add to your toolbox, visit a local music store and ask if they have old guitar strings, the tiny thin wires are great for accent details on something like this. The ship needs a break of color like a yellow or blue strip along the side. Your cardboard house was how I first found you, it was inspiring in the early days of lockdown.

Haha, well in my mind I was saving myself time because I knew there would have to be a model of the Captains own ship somewhere in the project. But I can see how building it bigger would be a bit easier! That makes sense that the sails wouldn't impede travel as there is no wind resistance. It's hard to get into the space mind set😄 OOoh I do have some guitar strings! I need to pull them out for sure and use them in a few places, thanks for the reminder!

    Hello Ara 😀
About background at the map, I could suggest gradient from black on top, to blue at the bottom and stars on it - would look like early night sky I guess 😉
I'm really impressed with the project. Looks like you'll have a lot more work with this one [all the spaces to fill, and the outside to finish] . If you'd need any decorations or something, please let me know. Maybe I'll be able to find something usefull at my craft suplies boxes ☺
Any way, I'm totally in love with the whole story behind this build and waiting for more and more - it's always fascinating 😃

Phew, since August is almost upon us and with Beetlegust just behind it, I am glad you found the time to put in some Captain's Quarters just to stem the tide, as it were. 😉 Thanks Ara. Having made several space-ship maps myself for different tablerop RPG projects it is refreshing to see you go about it in another way. First it opens new ways of thinking about how to do it, secondly it shows how differently people think. Which I am glad for, it would be a boring world if we all thought the same way. (I just wish we were not so inventive about wars. Sigh...)
Anyway, the ship finally has a shape. And other rooms! I guess they will not be models later on, but it is nice to get some perspective on WHERE it is. Neat. 😀Stormy should have been more helpful, busy running the business I guess. 😛

Lol yep! I barely made this video in time to squeak into July😄 I don't think Beetlejuice would be very kind if I encroached on his month too much🤦‍♀️ I totally agree on the miracle that is the human mind! Do you have any videos or links to other videos on how it is typically done for table top RPG games? I am always interested in learning other processes too. This one just made the most sense in my mind lol! I don't imagine I will ever build the other parts of the ship but it is kind of fun knowing where everything exists now. Stormy got her summer hair cut and was feeling a little shy. I am sure she will reappear next month ;)

Your model is fantastic! I noticed three engine rooms. What power source does the captain’s ship use? Should there be storage for this energy source? Perhaps the ship runs on wind power, necessitating trips to earth to collect this energy and store it in one of your engine rooms in some sort of high tech battery that the captain has invented. I am excited for future videos!
