- What are the worst towns to live in Wales? We don’t want to make it boring. Otherwise, we would have listed all the towns in Wales in the order of how they are considered good. Even if we could do that, some people may view such a listing as conjectural. Towns considered good by a reviewer may be seen as bad by another. But then, for the sake of this production, let’s assume that all the towns in Wales are good. But they can’t all be equally good. If some had higher degrees of goodness, yes, they are better. And if some towns are better than others, the logic follows that some are worse. On that positive note, let’s discuss the 10 worst towns to live in Wales.
10. Ebbw Vale
Ebbw Vale, the town at the head of the valley which is formed by the Ebbw Fawr tributary of the Ebbw River is the largest town in Blaenau Gwent county borough. Its direct access to the A465 Heads of the Valleys trunk road doesn’t make it a good place to live in Wales. The town bordering the Brecon Beacons National Park Ebbw Vale isn’t economically viable with the second-lowest mean salary in Britain. In fact, for the people to survive, 5 food banks are operating in the community. This has also affected the town educationally. This is indicated by its having the worst GCSE results in Wales. Meanwhile, Ebbw Vale is the town with the cheapest home price in England and Wales as no one would be willing to buy a home in a place very bad to live in.
9. Pontypool
As we think about Pontypool, we’re filled with the emotion of love for the residents of the people. No, this doesn’t mean we love to live among them or envy their situation. We only salute their resilience that makes them remain in a town without no places to visit, no nightlife, no restaurants and bars, and with zero social life. This administrative center of the county borough of Torfaen has nothing like a sense of community. Ironically, there’s no privacy in this town as almost everyone will notice your presence or absence. Your financial status is in public knowledge. Care needs to be taken in such a town to select a date if you don’t want to have an incestuous amorous affair.
8. Llangefni
The case of Llangefni, the county town of Anglesey, whose name in Welsh means meaning “church on the River Cefni,” is pathetic. The town which is home to the principal offices of the Isle of Anglesey County Council and the second largest settlement in that county has too many bad reviews. But to stay on a kinder side, we would side with those who consider it one of the worst Welsh towns to live because of the number of old people in the town. The town is actually gradually taking up the appearance of old peoples’ homes as it has a higher percentage of older people. That should tell you that the town is boring and is economically disadvantaged. The town’s unemployment rate is higher than the national average.
7. Port Talbot
What image does the name of the town, Port Talbot evoke? If you choose to turn a blind eye to the negatives, you are likely to see a town and community of the home of one of the biggest steelworks in the world. That is cute. But that economic opportunity which covers a large area of land, dominating the southeast of the town does not come without a cost for the town. The environmental pollution this has caused for the town some 13 kilometers from Swansea has made it one of the worst places to live. The town is filled with the stench from this and other dirt dominating the place.
6. Llantwit Major
Our attention is now on Llantwit Major, a community on the Bristol Channel coast. This is one of 4 towns in the Vale of Glamorgan. The community located about 7.2 kilometers from Cowbridge, 14 kilometers from Bridgend, 16 kilometers from Barry, and 24 kilometers from Cardiff has not allowed these nice locations to rub off on it. It is one of the 10 worst places in Wales on this list for anyone who cares about safety. The crime rate there is rather on the high side and this is obviously inimical a good living. We would recommend living in any other place in Wales before mentioning Llantwit Major.

The fact that you cannot pronounce many of the names of the places (even 'Major', ffs!) coupled with the fact that some of the photographs used aren't even of the towns highighted makes this laughable. This is truly amateur!

Spent nearly five years living in Llantwit Major and never had any crime-related problems. Saw nothing but some pot-smoking teens at the station. Would happily live there again if I could.

You are right with the misinformation. Llantwit Major is near'ish to me. I was a bit surprised by the claim it has a high crime rate, which I don't remember hearing. I just checked and its 56% lower than the the average in the Vale of Glamorgan and also 56% lower than the national UK average.

I live in Pontypridd and the scenery is good in glyncoch mountain and ponty is not as bad as the media says and our history of the bridge is good and that's what makes this town famous

I lived in Pontypridd as a foreign student at the USW and I loved it!! The cute history museum, the market with amazing welsh cakes and other foods and over the bridge is a beautiful big park, as well as the commemorative statues within. I'm Welsh and this video is bollocks. Ebbw Vale, Llantwit Major and Rhyl are generally quiet middles class areas. Pontypridd is not nearly as bad as many other areas in the Valleys. There is no mention of the certain parts of Cardiff, Swansea, Rhondda Valley, Rhymney Valleys that are appalling to live in. Only part of Merthyr Tydfil that is bad is Gurnos, the rest is pretty much the same as else where. You needed to do your research before posting.
Port Talbot is actually a really nice place to live. A beautiful beach to the South , a beautiful country park to the East and a beautiful national forest park to the North, these never seem to get mentioned. I love living here.
Not to mention the kindest, most caring community I’ve ever had the pleasure of living in, let alone being born into.

I'm surprised Bridgend isn't on this list considering some of the places on here I'd see as being nicer. Also if you're going to do a list at least check how to pronounce the names correctly- not being funny but where did you get the idea that major is said mayorrr? 😅
When researching your videos do pay attention to the images of the places that you use. In 'Newport' you featured 2 pictures from Newport Pembrokshire which is so far removed from Newport Gwent its amazing to see you made this error....

The guy driving the truck was hilarious. As we approached, he warned me that there had been a zombie apocalypse there, and the only people on the street would be shuffling around like the undead.

If you want some nice Welsh towns to go to, at least to visit, Monmouth, Tenby, Llanidloes, Cardigan, Solva. I really enjoy these places.

Ponty - at one time the longest single span arch bridge in the world. Brown lennox? also at one time the worlds longest station platform. Our national anthem (probably the greatest in the world) was composed here. Tom jones home town. Dr Willliam Price originally from here etc. etc. there's so much more - ynysyngharad park, the lido (which you don't know about).

I was born in Pembroke Dock 60+ years ago, but with an army father had left within a few weeks. In recent decades I have been back to walk around and take a look. Welsh locals good, but what a run down depressing place devoid of opportunity. I left truly depressed.

Rhyl number one on this list had The Bistro. I've never lived in Rhyl but for 6 or 7 years used to go there for the Bistro every weekend. Best alternative / indie place outside the cities. Met many lifelong friends there.

Neath is actually a very pretty town. This video just focussed on the sites that every town or village has.
Neath is also a wonderful place to live it has so meny great places and has good homes some of the time but it is a good and safe place most people there are kind and everyone in neath is kinda smart and also the views i sights and ancient buildings can be beautiful

I'm from pontypridd and to be honest I have to agree, it's a shit hole, on a night out people just wanna fight and to be honest it would not be missed if it were flattened and I think that's the best thing they could do with it, might improve ponty if they did.

Nothing beats merthyr
The video might have been more convincing had the commenatator been able to pronounce the names correctly: i.e. double D is pronounced as TH, a single F as a V, two FFs as F. Also, it should be pointed out that the problems identified in these mostly South Wales coal valleys towns are a consequence of de-industrialisation, unleashed on them from 1980s onwards as part of the Neoliberal class war against organised labour, in particular, the NUM..

The pronunciations in this were hilarious, even the English words in the names were wrong, LLantwit Mayor🤭 , wasn’t a trick spelling the second word is simply major, as in ‘this video needed some major research into pronunciation before being made’. Was fun though.

Merthyr Tydfil was actually named after St Tydfil who became a martyr, martyr meaning slain, after she was killed by either welsh or Anglo-Saxon pagans.
