Great review. You’re spot on. Thanks for showing that the “vinyl community” isn’t an echo chamber and people actually can have their own opinions and not just take one person’s (specifically that dude in Arizona) opinion as if it’s the only one that matters like a bunch of sheep.
Finally a review that doesn't relegate this release to the trash heap. I've had the 45 since release. Knew I was going to get them all but didn't opt for the box set for a few reasons. Had to get this UHQR as soon as it was released. Wasn't expecting much since Chad didn't give it a glowing promo vs the 45. Pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed it more than the 45 although I couldn't tell you why. BTW highly recommend the record store day box set of outtakes from a couple years ago. Gives new insight into the making of the record and gave me even more respect for Morrison's take charge demeanor during the sessions and his push for perfection. No sign of his impending slide to drug induced depression and eventually death
I think that the UHQR sounds more "natural" than the 45 rpm, and therefore I like it more^ But when I listen to other channels the 45 rpm is often their "winner" Good review.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed the review. I've spent the last week avoiding everyone's reviews because I really wanted to get my head around it first. I can see why someone would prefer the 45, but ultimately, I found myself far more involved in the music (foot tapping etc) with the UHQR.
I’ve got these and a few other pressing. My go to is, however, “ L A WOMAN : WORKSHOP SESSIONS. It puts you in the room with them and the mix is spot on.
I prefer the 45 version. To me there is a lot more realism . Kudos to AP for the new box at least they are listening to their customers . Great review !!!
Dave, I have to admit this UHQR exposed a little of my over-obsessiveness. I saw the announcement and was curious. Then I remembered I had an incredible AP 45rpm at home. Then the FOMO hit me with various reviews like yours and knowing it's limited to 4,500. Then I ordered two copies from Elusive for free shipping, but it had a ship date two weeks hence, which sublimated the FOMO. I thought clearly about it for two days and cancelled my order. The truth is, sometimes great is good enough. And the 45 rpm - better or worse in different ways from the UHQR - is a remarkable production in itself. Great review, as always, Dave. Thanks for your carefully crafted and thoughtful analysis based on meticulous listening.
Great overview. Your comparison review style is excellent!! I have an original US Santa Maria version VG+. It is my go to copy. Dynamic realistic rock 1971 version. What it was meant to be. I have many CD and vinyl versions of The Doors. Original US or as one other comment stated - the Rhino 2009 are your next best option. Save your money!!
Thanks Austin, glad you enjoyed the review. There's no doubt the 45 is truly spectacular. If I didn't have the UHQR I'd probably still be "A-B"ing the 45 against my original...
Bloody hell Dave I was thinking this is your JApanese episode with the subtlety of a plain shirt (and not showing off your proud collection of shirts :) but hell no, its matching the LA Woman Yellow!! You fashionable freak you - the Tokyo episode? Took me these releases to start listening to the Doors again coupla years ago, couldn't after teen years in bombay when we heard every album hundreds of times out of limitation of music available. Good to hear your always geeky review as I also found the bass very lacking on these 45rpms, but thats comparing to childhood music which was on tape and a copy of a copy and thus thick in bass. Is it me or all the Doors albums lack in bass, or was it the production? So good to hear that a 33 sounds overall better than the 45 - Chad's not losing his mind after all. Thank you Dave, such a great review. (now to dump my 45 and buy this ;)
Great review as always. I have the 45 and have always been happy with it. This has made me consider buying it also. Uk pricing is all over the place. Anyone know what this costs with shipping and taxes to the uk from AP?
If you get charged import duty / VAT it'd be around £140-150, if you don't (apparently below a certain value (I think around £130?) you don't get these import charges)... So if only ordering this, It'd then cost you around £120...
Great review of a sublime album. I have got the 50th Anniversary boxset which includes vinyl and 3 CDs - it was released by Rhino - great boxset which is fine for me. I have quite a few half speed remasters but ultimately prefer Blu-ray remasters which often include 5,1 or ideally Dolby Atmos. Duran Durans recent Danse Macabre album is a great example along with ABC’s Lexicon of love and APP albums such as tales of mystery and imagination. Thank you.
Great review, Dave! I also think the UHQR is slightly better than the 45. Better bass and a nice natural “airy” feel to it. It’s also a nice change to have a 33 rpm. I really want them to do a UHQR for the first album, which is my favorite Doors album.
Great video Dave and most helpful as I'm not sure which of these to get - would be very interested in buying the 45rpm off you if you are no longer going to go to it.
Dave, Thanks for validating my initial thoughts. Something about his cut is things sound far more real. I feel the soundstage is a bit more equalized and not as brash. The 45 is more raucous and piercing at times. I love to hear all the instruments….Bernie did a good job. I suppose if I wanna hear brash one day I will play the 45. If I want to actually hear everything I choose the UHQR. I also like cutting at a lower level allowing more head room to turn up…. Turn it up without making your ears bleed.
What an dilema for me now, thanks Dave🙂! Was so close to order 45rpm, but now dont know what to do. DCC version is way to expensive. And of course, thanks for your impressions Dave! Any chance you can post music video's of same track ( 45rpm v.s. UHQR ) as demo on your channel? Normally I wouldnt bother, but regarding this particular album it may help a bit. Thx!
First of all, appologies Dave that I am using your video for this, but thought it may help some people to make the right choice within their budgets. Have been researching quite a lot the last week and just bought, seems by many overlooked 2003 German so called 320 ( number on dead wax ) re-issue, which been mentioned by some folks as very close to DCC Steve Hoffman mastering and cut, which is also very regarded one. On that very same named forum folks are split in to 30/30/30/10, where part stick with OG, part with 45rpm, part with both and the rest dont care. Of course, this is not the precise split, but just my own general impression so far. For each his own. Again, thx for your opinion Dave, helped me to search further for sure!
The 45 remains the undisputed champ and has more bass and presence … but the 33 holds the edge for clarity because of the low noise floor and better vinyl. The 33 is also more convenient. I think they complement each other. I’m keeping both.
To be honest I'm keeping all three, for the time being at least. Both the AP45 and the UHQR offer something the original doesn't, in different directions. The UHQR and OG win on musical involvement though, which to be honest, was a surprise to me.
I have the 45 rpm and I find it uninvolving. I thought it was incompatible with my system since everyone seems seems to love it and I don't. Thanks for the informative review, much appreciate it.
I have so far avoided anyone else's review. I tend to do that so I can approach the listening completely unbiased... I'm not surprised a lot of people prefer the 45. It certainly is impressive, but as you say, the UHQR really got ym foot tapping! Thanks for the feedback Bob.
Nice thoughts/review! I’m not a Doors fanatic and haven’t listened to this album enough to understand the subtle differences. Nor do I own multiple versions. I have the 45 as a fan of classic rock and feel it’s excellent based on how it sounds, but don’t feel the need to compare.
Short answer.... the 45 is simply better. The UHQR being done at 45rpm would have helped it and i dont get why it isnt. I can safely say every AP cut ive got where its been done at 45 and 33, said cut has ALWAYS sounded notably more alive via the 45 playback. Lynyrd, Miles, Herbie, Brubeck, Steppenwolf etc etc. Then theres the AP 45rpm jazz titles ive got vs their BN Classic versions. 45 rpm for the win each and every time. I think at $150 for a double 45 is already overpriced, so it is quite annoying that they are now putting these overpriced luxury records in a less luxurious box. It just feels cheap, and that is a problem to me because nothing about a UHQR should feel cheap when taking the price into account. I really enjoy your reviews and your opinion. Cheers
