I woke up early Monday morning at 2:30 am and was watching Steve’s channel and someone posted that there was some box sets left over because of non payment and was able to grab one like you did. Glad I did !
Great post as always. Bit subdued though today Robert, but you perked up with your Soft Parade highway fire flashback and no runnin’ blue impression this time 😀 look forward to the next vid.
I’m glad to hear someone else point out how tight the Rhino jackets are I’ve been saying it for 2 years, I keep buying them because of the quality of the pressings but they totally miss it on the packaging it’s aggravating to where I don’t want to pull the vinyl out to play, I heard one RUclipsr say try switching out the inner sleeves which helped a little but didn’t solve totally on the glossy covers that doesn’t bother me as much.
I think the highest praise I can give you, Robert, is that I no longer collect vinyl and I don't like The Doors. But here I am watching every second of your video.
Great video! I went back through my Doors and strangely I have a few holes in my collection. I do have my dad's 1st press of the self titled. Not in the best shape but love it!
Hey Robert, Kevin Gray explained that he basically cut and spliced to repair the problem on the album “Waiting For The Sun”. Pretty cool interview on Steve Westmans. Mainly just Bruce talking technical stuff but also telling some pretty entertaining memories of The Doors recording sessions and “Jim stories”. Well worth a watch. Thanks for the review. Id say your assessment is pretty close to what I am gathering also. Certainly not the bees knees on these reissues.
Great review, very informative! It's a shame that the the 1st album has such an increasingly convoluted history. I didn't care for that recent reissue with the extra vocals and the "corrected" pitch/speed/whatever. Luckily, I have an original LP, and heck even my cassette that I bought in the '80s still sounds quite fine! Thanks for the useful info, always enjoyable!
Hey Robert. Thanks for the thorough review on the Doors RHF box set. 👍🏼 Yes, I’m the guy who made the record shootout video on the worst sounding song (Break On Through) from the Rhino RHF set 😂
Glad you were able to snag a copy! Personally I prefer the RHF of the first album over the AP 45. The earliest of my two regular copies is a 1970 Monarch. The other is from 1974. Haven't listened to them in ages. Would I like an OG Monarch, Yes. But not enough to spend the time and $$$ to track down a clean copy. Glad that I'm not the only one frustrated by the stupid RHF cardboard jackets. I have all the RHF releases except ZZ Top (nothing against the band, just haven't listend to them that much, thus too big an investment). Some of the jackets barely squeeze into the outer jackets I use for gatefolds. These jackets fit with room to spare on most gatefolds with no issues removing and replacing the album. My solution...I put the album in a generic outer jacket, which fills out the difference in width between the spine edge and the pockets. The Westman interview is worth a listen. I happened to listen to it soon after it was uploaded. When it was over I went to text the link to my ex-neighbor (also a long-time record collector). He had already texted me the link a couple of minutes earlier.
@@RobertFithen The outer sleeves I use eliminate the fingerprint part of the glossiness. What I can't figure out is how they get the album into the jacket. Plus they take up too much space due to the thickness of the spine edge.
Totally with ya! No more Doors (already have the one you reviewed, plus that last vinyl boxed set (2010?), plus all Analogue Productions, etc.... and yeah, no more Beatles... or Neil Young, or DSOTM for crissakes! (Do we believe us?) How about diverting my attention with a Rhino High Fidelity Bob Segar boxed set?! Or Parliament/Funkadelic? But great stuff as always, Robert! You're a blast.
I was thinking out loud of hopefully picking up this Doors box and the Beatles 64' mono's but my wife, from the next room, loudly reminded me that we DO have kids and Christmas is coming. I guess I am cancelled. Probably for the best. Thanks as always Robert for doing your wonderful and insightful videos!
I got my box a couple of Fridays ago, and I can at least say I didn't find any of the disappointing sound issues with the first album that you did, because inside my uniquely numbered Oh-so glossy gatefold jacket of the Doors' debut album I instead found a copy of the Rhino High Fidelity Strange Days vinyl LP. All of the other uniquely (but matching) numbered glossy gatefold album jackets contained their proper album within, including the actual Strange Days jacket, so I basically have an extra copy of Strange Days but am short one apparently sonically disappointing Doors debut album (not counting the two other sonically disappointing copies of the Doors' debut I own, but I swear I can stop any time I want). I emailed Rhino about this, and just this very morning finally got back a reply asking for a photo of the incorrect item I received and a list of the items I'm missing (which, I'm pretty sure I mentioned all one of the items I'm missing in my original email but OK, I'm happy to repeat the entire one-item list again if that's what they want) and they'll ship out a replacement, stock permitting. ...So I'm pretty sure I'm not going to see a sonically disappointing Doors Debut album with a Rhino High Fidelity label until they start cranking out the unnumbered albums to sell individually as per the ZZ Top box. But at least I won't have to pay for it, again.
I guess if one record had to be waited for, it's best that it was the debut. Hopefully they fix this issue. They should also give you some kind of credit for the hassle.
cannot beat the orig/mix/masters. i scratched the phuck outta my orig copies, learning and transcribing all the vox 'n' instrumental parts, in college. my gato loco "Scruffy", finished off the spines, B-4 he was declawed. now he suffers from fantom claw syndrome. Looking forward to this. Like you, have had to wait for so long. I'm in the UK, so an extra wait. Dispatched end of November and it is slowly dragging itself to me. I can now see it finally arrived in the UK Saturday, so maybe will get it before Xmas. Luckily seemed to have avoided paying import tax on it though. Hope it's a good, solid box, as dreading what condition it will be in by the time it finally arrives.
I was so tempted to buy the Doors box but thankfully I held off! I own all these records already so I overcame the FOMO that runs rampant throughout the VC community If my records sounded bad I would have bought the box by they sound fine
Give it time. The vinyl bubble has to burst first, then they will start reissuing reel to reels and everyone will need to buy yet, another version of their favorite albums.
great review. I'm like you, I already have these albums but keep buying them. What I wish Rhino would do is to include Other Voices and Full Circle in these box sets. They were released as "official" The Doors" albums so should be included. What say you?
I've got a complimentary copy of the 2011 boxed set (also 6), "Light My Fire" clocks in at 06m59s on that one. I mean, I won't get this new one, but it's great for those who missed out on the previous box.
Being the one who notified you the box was available again, this was a nail biter (more so because I haven’t received my box yet). In my collection I only have the Doors S/T (1st Monarch and DCC) and LA Woman (1st Pitman), so for me this box was a no brainer. Funny thing is - I only have one more Doors item on my Discogs wish list and it’s the Greatest Hits Quad version lol
Thanks again for letting me know that it was available again. If you already have the Monarch debut, with this box, you'll have great sounding versions of everything.
Stretches can be repaired by simply recording how it sounds from the stretched part of the tape, performing any correction digitally, then recording it back on a good bit of tape and manually removing the old bit and inserting the new bit.
Enjoyed the take. I did end up selling my box, but mainly because I'm not a huge fan and will pick/choose the single releases when the come out (if inspired).
My friend bought the box set last week I don't know maybe it's just me but these records are a little too bright shiny and antiseptic for my taste. I like my doors down and dirty.
I bought the SACD boxset a few years ago... So, I'm all set. BTW, Acoustic Sounds seems to still have but I would advise against the boxset, it costs $100 more than just buying the SACDs separately for not much, yes there's a little booklet but that's it, the SACDs are just the same as if you buy them separately, so if you're interested, just get the SACDs and save some money
Although it seems that you have every Doors song multiple times across various albums, boy what an amazing band to do it with... sometimes I feel that their musical output far surpasses anyone else from that era including The Beatles & The Stones.
I almost threw this box set against the wall I was so frustrated with the hideous cardboard jackets! Why did Rhino make it so difficult to slide the record and the inserts in and out? Even replacing with the Mofi inner sleeves, it’s still a pain in the ass. That being said, I am happy I bought this since I didn’t have any Doors on vinyl. I do agree when I played that first album I wasn’t overly impressed with the mastering although it is a clean version. The rest of the set sounds amazing. Thx for your review.
@@RobertFithen I agree! I usually don't spend that much on vinyl and when I find used Doors at the record stores they are usually in poor condition. Overall, it was a great investment on my end.
You mentioned the 8 tracks and mentioned how bad the Original Rounded Corners of L.A. Woman sounding poor due to the limitations of a longer play record and the compacted grooves. The thing is the first time I heard L.A. Woman was on a 8 track player in an old GMC custom van owned by future Uncle.
I also really enjoyed the actors someone hired trying to get you to stop buying. The script to the customes was hilarious enough. But how did you find the young Zeppelin Wearing girl? The amazing part is that she looks a lot like you! Oh I remember that song too!
I hope the Doors and their current management reconsider and purchase the rights to Jim's last show with The Doors at the New Orleans Warehouse at the end of 1970. I can't imagine Jim would have been much more wasted than at the Boston 1970 show they already released and I've heard the sound quality is supposed to be good. The Doors Boot Yer Butt bootleg highlights collection captures a show from slightly before in Dallas with incredible live arrangements of key LA Woman songs but in extremely rough audio quality, I'd love to hear either the better sound quality versions from New Orleans or someone to do some MAL software magic to the Dallas 1970 tape.
@@RobertFithen I have hopes too. Some of the recent Doors RSD titles have either been Doors fans holy grails or frequently bootlegged shows but with additional un-bootleged tracks or variant longer mixes.
Hey Robert, nice interesting video. Not a major Doors fan though I have mostly Australian pressings of the LP's as well as the 2006 CD/DVD "Perception" box and last year acquired (for cheap) the 1999 box set with the replica sleeves. Shame that those LP sleeves are so tight. That's a real pain. Funny how they go to one length with quality control but somehow miss that detail. I'm guessing the new sleeves are shorter in height than the originals perhaps? Anyway thanks for your really informative review. I can see you are clearly 'Doorsed-out' lol. Cheers mate. 👍
This video I found it's very low quality but for me it sounds as the speed corrected version ruclips.net/video/9xCySOXiJns/видео.htmlsi=JzQz59MlsTvwcByb
Thanks for the go-through. Personally I think I'll skip this box, well, it's out of order anyway so.. Now, you asked how you'd listen to the Soft Parade and hesitated. What is your opinion about the 2020 RSD "Stripped" version of the Soft Parade? No horns, no strings. It's not the complete album revisited, it's only 4 tracks plus "Who Scared You", but still.
I bet at least half of us are wishing you would do another T'was Before Christmas Video. Here's a few ideas. ...The stocking were hung by the chimney with care. Is that a scratch on my record or just a piece of hair The moon on the breast of the new fallen snow I'd buy more vinyl, but the prices are pay thru the nose.
In Westman's interview Kevin Gray and Bruce Botnick talk about how the originals had bass lessened per the industry standard of the time, and Kevin didn't have to do that, so there is more bass. The first album was cut from the master LEDO tape created from the multitracks, so it isn't a safety tape.
@@RobertFithen I just listened to the Rhino and the AP45 and when it comes to 20th Century Fox it generally has more bass than the other tracks, in both versions. The AP overall is more balanced and the bass on that song isn't as strong as the Rhino. It makes me think that the marching orders for the Rhino were to just get the most out of each song as possible and they didn't worry as much about balance from song to song. You are right, the Rhino is much more all over the place in terms of sound quality, especially on side 1. Side 2 seemed much better to me. The AP has better balance throughout but they did tame the bass in spots.
Just wondering if you have "The Doors-The Complete Studio Recordings" that was issued on HDCD in 99 and your comparisons of that and this new vinyl set. Also have you ever heard "Waiting For The Sun" in mono? If so how does that compare to the stereo issue?
I think the mono Waiting for the Sun is just a fold down, iirc.. Not many unique mono mixs for that album, other than for the singles. It's really close to the stereo, so that's probably why it hasn't been reissued. I highly recommend checking out the podcast: Mixology: The mono/stereo mix differences and the episode about this album. He covers this in detail. 🍻
I’m just starting video and I wonder is this made by the same company as the Beatles one, other than being released by Rhino? I would get a refund on this. It comes damaged? I just got Simple Things reissue by Zero 7 and The Orb, Ultraworld reissue from 1991, nice and sealed :)
if my antisoc-iLL insecurity cheque allows it, as a Gordie Howe Towner by birth, i want the Doors Live at either Cobo or the Olympia, in D Towne. my older bro, was at both shows.
The Rhino High Fidelity didn't sound better than the Analogue Productions 45 rpm. The other thing is, AP's are available worldwide. The Rhino High Fidelity's you only get at this shitty Online Store with the criminal shipping costs. What an arrogance concept. They pressed the Vinyl in Germany. The whole shit is transported to the US and i couldn't buy it in Europe? As a German i must buy for immense costs in the US? The regular Rhino shit i can buy on every Street Corner. Shame on you Rhino and Patrick Mulligan👎
Weren't The Doors masters some of those that were destroyed in that famous Universal warehouse fire? That might explain why the originals aren't out there anymore
@@R3TR0R4V3 Wrong I'm afraid. That's not how masters tend to work. Loads of masters are typically made and the first generation ones are stored and rarely touched except if more copies are needed in future. As it says on that box on the first album, it says it's the only known good copy left. So considering that Universal lost loads in that warehouse fire, I wouldn't be sutrprised if that's why. Sure there are likely quite a few masters dotted about but they aren't either good or maybe are more than one generation down. Hence, why it says what it says.
@@crunchyfrog555 well you believe whatever you want, but I have the boxset, and am looking right at the pics of the master tapes. Yes, lots of tapes got burnt up, but apparently the doors were spared. ;)
$415 + for the box today 12/9/2024 on Discogs. 6 albums. Kinda.... high. I've watched too many videos about other editions, pressings, about the sound not being as good as it should be. I have no illusions about owning a pristine first pressing of any album at all, and I also understand that a lot of these pressings "from the original masters" are really not, as they will go through a digitization process as the tapes are on their last legs. Even the best quality material will begin to show signs of deterioration, after multiple uses over 50 years. I own a 1980s pressing of "13" and "Greatest hits" , so I am OK with what I have. I have never owned a proper Doors album, but I've heard them and they are a mixed bag. I'll stick to the hits, thank you. Your experience and your preference may be different.
Had and lost the original mono of first LP. It was LOUD and bright, Read somewhere that the original recordings had Dolby on, but it was mastered with Dolby OFF. First time I heard the stereo version did not like it.
Yeah my Stooges Rhino HI-FI sleep is very tight and has a little seam split. I'd rather have a matt finish rather than gloss sleeve myself. Lots of info regarding the tape repair on this podcast ruclips.net/video/M2pfBMgloUo/видео.htmlsi=_OJEFv4U76AKu4OY
Thank you, Robert for the great review. Now, I want to see your reaction to Janet Jackson’s “Control” and “Rhythm Nation 1814” albums. I recently saw a vinyl copy of Janet Jackson’s “Rhythm Nation 1814” album, but I figured the album truly belongs on CD.
Because they are in glossy covers you can barely touch with smearing them with fingerprints. Shrink also protects them when sliding in and out of the box as well as keeps the side panel on. I can look at photos of the added gatefolds on Discogs.
@RobertFithen you can also use protection covers which you can take off so you can whatch whats on the inside of the gatefolds instead of watching on discogs.. Or dont play the records at all (and listen to them online) and keep them safe in the box..then they really keep their value.😃..but better play the fucking records and enjoy them and dont worry about their shape, life is too short for that. I did used ptotection sleeves till Ill get an heartattack month ago and an week later also diagnose's of lungcancer...first thing I did was to remove all of the goddamn protection sleeves of all my records, cause I always hate them and now I was thinking, well they gonna live longer as I am...so fuck them and fuck the value or the state they are in...🤷
Hey Rob, great review on this box set. I also did a review on my channel that you should check out if you have the time. I was critical of how the self titled came out since it used a copy tape which I understand is the best of what they had. To me I didn’t really have any other pressing to compare them too, but I really liked the sound of all of them. I’m going to save up and look for a DCC copy of the self titled.
@ unfortunately no I emailed them last week and they got back to me once but nothing since. I have heard from others that although rhino hi-fi puts out great products. Their customer service sucks ass. If I do not get them by the end of the week, I’m gonna email them back and ask for some sort of compensation like a free record.

I also really enjoyed the actors someone hired trying to get you to stop buying. The script to the customes was hilarious enough. But how did you find the young Zeppelin Wearing girl? The amazing part is that she looks a lot like you! Oh I remember that song too!
Watch Steve westman podcast with Bruce botnick Kevin gray he tells you exactly how they fixed the stretch it’s digitally fixed
Legacy version is Australian , great com!
Seems like every RSD there's another Doors concert released so it's possible these concerts could be getting issued.
Thanks!! I never thought about them being shorter to fix in a box.
6:05 Can anyone confirm that? I've seen that stereo rhino pressing at some stores over the years.
This video I found it's very low quality but for me it sounds as the speed corrected version ruclips.net/video/9xCySOXiJns/видео.htmlsi=JzQz59MlsTvwcByb
Those people that staged the intervention meant well, and I'm sure you can quit anytime....but don't!
Thanks! I haven't heard the stripped version.
Well, I'm afraid you'll have to buy yet another Doors disc for your collection then. 😏😁
I bet at least half of us are wishing you would do another T'was Before Christmas Video. Here's a few ideas.
...The stocking were hung by the chimney with care.
Is that a scratch on my record or just a piece of hair
The moon on the breast of the new fallen snow
I'd buy more vinyl, but the prices are pay thru the nose.
I should keep re-uploading the first one like a Christmas re run that returns every year.
We already seen that episode.and it is available for viewing. Why not do a new one each year? It was funny!
The bass definitely sounds more appropriate and real on the later albums.
I only have "LA Woman" from '99 in HDCD. I've not heard "Waiting for the Sun" in mono.
If you have a good stereo copy of Waiting for the Sun, prepare yourself to be wowed by Spanish Caravan.
It always sounds great.
I’m just starting video and I wonder is this made by the same company as the Beatles one, other than being released by Rhino? I would get a refund on this. It comes damaged? I just got Simple Things reissue by Zero 7 and The Orb, Ultraworld reissue from 1991, nice and sealed :)
Hillarious
if my antisoc-iLL insecurity cheque allows it, as a Gordie Howe Towner by birth, i want the Doors Live at either Cobo or the Olympia, in D Towne. my older bro, was at both shows.
Probably future RSD releases
The Rhino High Fidelity didn't sound better than the Analogue Productions 45 rpm. The other thing is, AP's are available worldwide. The Rhino High Fidelity's you only get at this shitty Online Store with the criminal shipping costs. What an arrogance concept. They pressed the Vinyl in Germany. The whole shit is transported to the US and i couldn't buy it in Europe? As a German i must buy for immense costs in the US? The regular Rhino shit i can buy on every Street Corner. Shame on you Rhino and Patrick Mulligan👎
Die sind (bei Optimal) in Deutschland gepresst???
@@lucalone Yes at Optimal. Rhino High Fidelity all from Optimal
It is fucked up.. I feel for you guys. I don't know why they don't have a EU distributor. Ridiculous
Weren't The Doors masters some of those that were destroyed in that famous Universal warehouse fire? That might explain why the originals aren't out there anymore
Nope, thankfully all the tapes still exist and there's pictures of the tape boxes included on the inserts for each album.
The Doors are not affiliated with Universal. All their masters (Multitrack and 2 track) are all together and safely stored in a Hollywood vault.
Yes, lots of tapes got burnt up, but apparently the doors were spared. ;)
@@R3TR0R4V3 Not a matter of belief but evidence. It says what it says on that first album notes. Robert clearly said it.
$415 is somewhat ridiculous. I paid $250
I know this might trigger some purists but I think the 2007 CD Mixes of the albums are the best sounding releases of these.
I think botox fixes stretches
I found out it was apparently spliced and replaced so not really "repaired".
Why to discuss if buy or not a thing that is sold out everywhere ?
OFFS it can still be bought it someone wants it and so many people seem to think it will be re released unnumbered and individually.
"Rhythm Nation" is definitely best on CD.
The covers are gatefolds so why you want them to be sealed and keep them sealed? 🤷
Thabks!! That's the best plan if a first monarch pressing isn't available Did Rhino ever send you the side panels?
@ unfortunately no I emailed them last week and they got back to me once but nothing since. I have heard from others that although rhino hi-fi puts out great products. Their customer service sucks ass. If I do not get them by the end of the week, I’m gonna email them back and ask for some sort of compensation like a free record.
It's a woman on the telephone pole. LA WOMAN
