The Dangerous Chemicals In Your Plastic Packages

- Plastic is everywhere. In grocery receipts, water bottles, and of course, food packaging. And that means that chemicals in plastic like BPA and phthalates are everywhere too. Researchers are concerned that these chemicals can leach into food and get into your body, which might have serious health consequences.
To learn more, check out Bruce Blumberg’s "The Obesogen Effect:"
www.amazon.com/Obesogen-Effec...
Following is a transcript of the video:
Narrator: There's been a lot of buzz about dubious chemicals in the environment that might contribute to some pretty frightening stuff like obesity, breast cancer, thyroid issues. And they seem to lurk everywhere: in pesticides, cosmetics, and especially plastic packaging. In light of this, it's understandable to start panicking. But before you do, let's hear what molecular biologist Bruce Blumberg has to say on the subject. He's been studying the link between synthetic chemicals and obesity for around 15 years. So he might be able to give us a better idea of what's really going on and what to do about it.
Bad news is, Blumberg confirmed that, yep, we're surrounded by these chemicals. One of the most well known is BPA, or Bisphenol A, which shows up in water bottles, cans, milk cartons, and more.
Bruce Blumberg: You get them from thermal paper receipts. Like I have, I have these receipts from a recent trip. All of these things are coated with Bisphenol A. It goes right into your skin.
Narrator: BPA has been making headlines for years about whether or not it's harming us. And while FDA-funded and independent studies have conflicting conclusions, the bigger heart of the issue is this: BPA is hard to get away from because it's a key building block in the tough, clear, flexible plastic called polycarbonate. And that proximity to food is what concerns scientists like Blumberg.
Bruce Blumberg: You don't want to store food in plastics because some fraction of those plastics will leach into your food.
Narrator: The BPA molecules that make up plastic are bound together by what's called an ester bond, which is extremely sensitive to heat. So when you heat up your food in plastic, that heat breaks some of the bonds, releasing the chemicals into your food. A survey by the CDC of 2,517 people estimated that over 90% of Americans have detectable levels of BPA in their urine. And BPA isn't alone. Phthalates, which make plastic flexible, can also leach into food when heated.
And reviews of hundreds of studies have linked BPA and phthalates to heart disease, obesity, and Type 2 diabetes. Not to mention a 2015 review linked phthalates with impaired neurological development in children, which in 2018 prompted the American Academy of Pediatrics to announce that families should avoid plastic food containers entirely. And other studies on animals, like mice and monkeys, have shown that these chemicals can lead to problems in the lungs, brains, and reproductive organs.
This is about the time someone like me would probably panic. But there are ways you can avoid these chemicals. Blumberg suggests it's best to just stick to heating your food in anything but plastic. Now, quick aside, BPA-free plastic containers aren't the answer because research suggests that BPS and BPF, the most common replacements for BPA, might have similar effects on your body. Instead, opt for replacements like ceramic or glass containers.
Bruce Blumberg: You have to do the best you can, and it makes sense to me to do the things that give you the most return for the least effort.
Narrator: And here's the best part. Once you reduce exposure, those chemicals slowly leave your body. As Blumberg says, they're stored in fat cells, which eventually die and ultimately leave your system.
Bruce Blumberg: Don't stress about it, right? Do your best and make conscious choices to improve things.

The Dangerous Chemicals In Your Plastic Packages Наука
“Don’t stress, do your best, and make co conscious decisions to improve things.” Some good life advice there.
i dont mean to be so off topic but does anybody know of a method to get back into an instagram account..?
I was dumb lost my password. I would love any tricks you can give me
I live in California and literally every store that I go to has the Prop 65 Warning: " WARNING: This product may contain chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm." Especially the plastic things at Dollar Tree. When I was younger I was really worried about it. Now I realize that plastic is everywhere and you can't really avoid it 100% of the time. But I still try to avoid it as much as I can. I mostly have glass containers, bowls and cups. Remember the four R's: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and most importantly *Refuse*
Y. R I live in Texas and also many stores have some of those products with that Prop 65 Warning from California. I wish that proposal was for all the country so we could make better choices everywhere.
@@thejokerjoker508 Exactly, companies should try their best not to use toxic chemicals in their products. I realize it's impossible to remove every potential danger but they should at least try removing the materials that are clearly toxic.
Even restaurants
@@r.r.r9300
It comes down to our government trying to limit our exposure as much as possible, unfortunately, the US government & regulatory affairs would rather be bought out by these companies. I think Europe does a better job of this.
You don't have to live in California to see Prop 65 Warning. I live in Indiana and see it on many products here too.
But what if my kitchen itself is made of plastic?
I mean only problem is when it heats up, hope you don't microwave your kitchen lol
Then you throw your kitchen away
Ur profile pic is the answer
but what if YOU YOURSELF are made of plastic?
Perfect... THEN YOU can EAT Shredded Plastic Containers.......
How bout we get rid of plastic all together??? Who's in???
Today, I've found out that my plastic food wrap has been scented with the smell of scented garbage bags. I cannot find something unscented. Almost everything has been scented. As you know, scent means chemicals.
scientist: plastic is dangerous for our health
factories: producing more plastic products
people: [insert pikachu meme here]
Always take reusable cups at coffee shops and restaurants that use disposable plastic. They leach chemicals in your drink and you ingest them.
I never heat my food with plastic.I put my food glass more then plastic.
If you mean plate there ceramic not glass

So what do I do with my life now
Remind foreign mothers to throw their plastic tupperware away & you’ll end up in the bin instead 🤷🏻♀️
Once again Western technology that has made it even worse for those who would not have used this material in the first place.
In Spain Village, Indian and so fort the women use clay pots why do we keep going away from what works and does less harm to the people and environment??? I now use if I can glass for everything.
how many people heat up baby milk or formula in a plastic bottle for their babies ?
I try recycling, and sometimes my recycled plastic cups melt when I put hot water or coffee in them :-/ I had over 20 recycled cups and bowls until I threw most of them away. Taco bell cups, KFC bowls, vending machine bottles, etc.
It never made any sense to me to heat up plastic ...it melts....so it makes sense that the molecular compounds would leach into your food sooooooo wtf. People are just willfully ignorant. 😂😐😂
Plastic is a broad term as there are many other synthetic materials you can put in the microwave you'd call plastic. I know there's also some kind of silicon you can also use but don't know if that would be called plastic? At least from what I know about the English language
Dude. There are different types of plastic. I mean, imagine if plastic furniture was made of the same stuff as grocery bags. Yknow slime? The product of sodium borate and PLA? That’s a plastic.
There's different kinds of plastics ya know. Including thermal resistant ones
I think you are the ignorant since you don’t know that there are various types of plastic
I was going to say I’m here for a good time not a long time but I’m not even having a good time😔
I’m chewing on a plastic top 😂
Affordable glassware can be found at ALL of your local dollar stores ( Dollar Tree, Family Dollar , Dollar General,) , & even Walmart has very reasonably priced glassware sets . Glass and Plastic run virtually the same prices when you compare lifespans .❤😊❤
Personally I use glass but unfortunately the world is headed towards a sand crisis. People should look for other materials to use other than glass and plastic.
@@r.r.r9300 steel or tin is also an option
Meanwhile more of our food in the USA comes in plastic every year. Mayonnaise, now comes in plastic, Jelly, ketchup, mustard, peanut butter, lunch meat, bread, cereal, microwave burritos EXC... Everything now comes in plastic, soda, milk, water you name it... Even the seals on canning jars are made from plastic so you can't even can your own food to get away from it.
2:02 what you say is actualy wrong. If bisphenol-a would go out of the monomer when heat is brought into the system the PC would dissolve. One of the great advanteges of advanteges of PC is, that it has a Glastemperature of 150°C ( since it is amorph it has no melting temp.) which actually means that the BPA would not go out of the monomer until a tempreature of 280°C.
Fat cells die? I thought you never can get rid of fat cells but only dictate the size, dependent on your lifestyle...?
they do die and get replaced every 8 years i think but you can not lower the number of fat cells like you said.
I was so disturbed that Seventh Generation and method free and clear dishwasher pods use polyvinyl alcohol. And "all" brand free and clear laundry pods do too. I assume that Tide Pods also use it. Just because it dissolves in water doesn't mean it's safe. This is greenwashing. Please continue to report on this issue!
My mom is now paranoid about por cutting board now, thanks.
@techinsider, So Dr. Bloomberg says that the dangerous property of BPA and BPA-like materials break their ester bonds and those enter into the food when the bonds break via heat? At what temperature do the ester bonds break? I did a quick Google search and it said 77 (I’m guessing that’s •C, so that’s makes it ~170 •F). Could you clarify that a little more, please?
Isn't plastic fantastic?
that it leaves such a drastic
impact on the environment
that is ignored by the government
why would they address it
It's money , they caress it..

They care more about cow farts for some reason.
is it safe to store cool food in plastic container or tupperware plastic?
I don’t heat anything in plastic, but I still use these containers anyway, is it the same thing?
you can't avoid plastic.Plastic is present in all life forms
For how long u can use it my plastic blender jug is number 7 and i hope it doesn't leech bad stuff because i blend too many things
How about microwavable containers?
Phthalets disproportionately affect men vs women. It is the leading cause of dropping sperm count
BPA insist in polycarbonate right? what about PET, PP, HDPE, LDPE, LLDPE?
I would want this but my family is closed minded.
Plastics with Pthalates are in recycling codes number 3 and 7.
Plastics with recycling codes number 1 and 2 and 5 are the safe plastics.
Water bottles are 1. That one is a problem isn't it?
@@dawn1913 Yeah
i just drank a bunch of activated charcoal. pvc is the exercise ball. : (
Ok, but what if we don't ever heat our plastic bottles or food storage containers?
what about teflon?
what happened to eating out of wood? where did that go?
I wish the food industry would get a clue. More and more things are put into plastic. It has become more and more difficult to get foods in glass. I avoid plastic for most of my food stuffs from the shop where possible. Due to the fact the food doesn't store well or as long. Now from this video, even more reasons to avoid the stuff.
True not all can be avoided. Also when I have to use plastic, I use things like butter dishes and Ice-cream dishes to keep my food in. They are made to keep food long term. Safer than using the plastic lunch box that is bought from a shop. They don't have the same stringent requirements when made.
But does storage matter if the food already came in plastic? I have silicone sleeves and Pyrex for food storage but how do you get around meats, fruits, eggs, milk that come in plastic? Where I’m from there’s Walmart and Aldi... and that’s it. One needs to consider practically + budget as well.
What about CPAP tubing and masks?
All that plastic you threw out takes hundreds of years to break down.
SanFranGirl1982 millions actually
Hector Maita Up to 1,000 years, actually. Source: www.thebalancesmb.com/how-long-does-it-take-garbage-to-decompose-2878033
So why did you say hundreds?
Hector Maita *Up to* 1,000 years. It depends on the item. Plenty of common items take hundreds of years.
plastic bags only take 4 years but plastic water bottles take thousands
And here in indonesia some people still boiling rice cake aka lontong in plastic. Crazy.
This video made me heat up and start sweating, only for my phone to start leaching its plastics into my body. 😔
WHAT ABOUT TUPPERWARE
This is well done! Too bad it couldn't also include the data from Shanna Swan's more recent book, "Countdown". Thanks for creating this film. Hopefully it will help get the word out.
"You don't want to store your food in plastics because some of those plastics will leech into your food...." Indeed, you can store your food in glass containers, BUT what if you desire to take your food with you to work? Glass is extremely impractical top use while traveling because it is heavy and the plastic top does not seal well. In my opinion, as long as the food is stored cold, it is ok to store food in plastic.
I'm watching this video as I clean my teeth with a plastic floss pick. ⛏
how many people heat up baby milk or formula in a plastic bottle for their babies ?

But most plastic aren’t made of BPA now. I think just try to avoid one-time use plastic.
Doesn't matter BPA is the only one making headlines, but every other plastic is the same harmful shit, only BPA got the bad name when ALL plastics should end of story.
I have some plastic bits in my body , so do I throw myself out??
I do not think you can. But you can get rid of heavy metals like lead by eating chlorella
This title is ironic, I'm "throwing away" the plastic in my kitchen
citations pls.
Because you’re not a scientist if you can afford your auto insurance and you’re happy with it keep it if you feel like you might be able to do better then go get something else. Had this approach with everything in your life except people. You never try to throw away people
This shit freaks me out.
Not all plastics are dangerous, plastic numbers two, four, and five are safe.
what about swimming in a pool cover ?
I never heat my food in plastic because of the leeching problem. I started making my own mayonnaise when the idiot manufacturers started putting it in plastic jars and bottles. And I've already stopped using Marzetti Poppyseed dresing because of the new plastic jars. The first 2 plastic jars of Marzetti's will end up in the garbage because I'm already detecting an odd taste. These greedy companies are just finding ways to cut their expenses and don't give a sh*t about flavor.
Can Plastic trap chemicals in them?
Is plastic harmful for keeping chemical
I've been using a plastic bottle to drink for a whole week 😬
Died
And silicone is safe right
Im throwing up my friend.
In the video you said bpa free plastics seem to disrupt mice then in that's case I'm going to keep my plastic. Why on earth would anyone want a rodent to be flying around there house having babies??
I'm sorry to tell you this, you literally breathe those chemicals every day. They are in our air, in our water, in our food. We literally live in our waste.
its about concentration and time of exposure. Of course its in the air and water. but most importantly we happen to eat right off of it too and we really shouldnt need to do that
So any drinks in plastic?
WHY I’m RIUNING THE PLANET BY FILLING IT WITH PLASTIC

very good awareness, pls educate about vacc side effects also. thanks
Ever heard of HDPE? You probably did, but the vid wouldnt be dramatic enough if you wouldve mentioned it as an alternative to BPA, BPE...
BPA and BPE are used in such small quantities that it's completely safe. BPA and BPE can be harmful but not in the tiny quantities used.
It is necessary that plastics be stored properly of course.
Plastic is not the enemy. Misuse of plastic is....

How about bpa free please? R they ok??
Unfortunately BPA free products can cause reproductive harm. The only thing that is pretty much safe is glass. But the world is slowly headed towards a sand crisis because sand is used in everything.

Memo: Pthalates keep plastic flexible
BPA.
Actually this is pointless since there has been studies that show that there might be plastics already in the food you eat
There is. It is also in things like toothpaste, deodorant, and even receipts that come from cash registers. The majority of people, like 90% of adults, have traces of plastic in their urine.
