My heart felt condolences to you and your family .. I can certainly sympathize/empathize, especially around the holiday season. My older brother Jeff (#Forever38) committed suicide Oct. 13, 1997 .. His birthday is/was Dec. 13, 1959. His daughter (only child), whose birthday is Nov. 26, was 1 y/o. She has no memories of Jeff except for what she was told .. I was living in a small WA town along the west coast at the time when I got the unfortunate news. I was a 'more than moderate' drinker and didn't have a phone at the time. One can only imagine just how suddenly nervous I became when I saw a LEO pull up in front and come to my door. I thought "what in the hell did I do last night!?" My family had to contact the local PD to notify me that there was a death in the family and to call home. My initial thoughts was that one of my parents had passed. I could never have fathomed this type of news. It was a shock to the system .. It was difficult to get thru these 3 months in the beginning.
It's been 24 years now. I love and miss Jeff very much. There isn't a day that goes by that I don't think of him or a memory get's triggered by something like a song or movie that we both liked. Today .. our mom has dementia .. there have been times when she has asked why we haven't heard from him lately. All I can do now is tell her that he's been busy with work or something and maybe he will call later.
It is difficult to find words of comfort .. and as cliche' as this statement is .. "life" will become easier as time passes ..
      ✝ 🙏 RIP to both ..

Allen is actually doing what some call lead with Gary on slide and Steve playing against Allen. Ronnie Van Zant lead singer song writer and general of the band. Leon Wilkinson on Bass. Billy Powell on Piano. Artimus Pyle on drums. and Cassie Gaines, Jojo Billingsley, and Leslie Hawkins the Honketts back up vocals. Steve G was the guitarist lost in the place crash and newly discovered by Ronnie and the group through his sister Cassie who was one of the back up vocalist; who was also killed in the crash. Actually during that time, no one cared. They just cared about the music. They were not racist at all, the band members.

They named the band after their high school gym teacher, Leonard Skinner, because he hated the boys' long hair (rock/counter culture, rebels against authority, etc.). It's pronounced LIN-erd SKIN-erd.

It's what we guitarists refer to as "jamming". Skynyrd was the master of the Three Guitar Army. Allen Collins directed that solo like a majordomo.

As a huge Horror genre fan, Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Free Bird” will always be connected to Rob Zombies’ “The Devil’s Rejects” for me, tho not my first time hearing & listening to “Free Bird”.

Yeah exactly man, it's like a jigsaw puzzle their musical Arrangements. They were so talented. But even though I am a guitar player but as a musician you have absolutely got to shout out to the base which Isley on Wilkinson and to the drummer which is Artimus Pyle. What a fantastic Rhythm Section did you hear that base near the end? He's doing like 64th notes all the way up the neck and it's just absolutely nuts and it's all about the energy of it at that point.

    • @stevedahlberg8680

That was two of their guitarists having a little "Back and Forth" with each other. They were flying the Band's plane from somewhere in the south to another state nearby, when they crashed, and a few members were killed. The leader, and front man "Ronnie Van Zandt" was killed. They were flying an old DC-3 propeller plane from the 1950s, and it had been giving them some trouble a week or so before they crashed. Two of the gals that sang back up for their concerts, said they were going to drive, because they were afraid to fly in that plane. They made the right choice.

Saw them for the first time 2 years ago in Maine. I knew a few of their songs because my favorite singer Hank Williams Jr. would sing some of them. Hank and Lynrd were on same tour so my socks were blown off when they did their show. One of the best concerts ever. Had to run out and buy a live CD of them.

The studio recording that you just heard…
Allen Collins played that Solo 4-times,
there is for separate layered tracks…
The studio cut is completely Allen Collins on the solo. When performed live, Allen Collins Played the primary lead with Ed King doing some lead behind him
After Ed King left the band in 1975 about a year later in 1976, they hired Steve Gaines, then Steve play his own solo riffs behind Allen’s primary lead.
But on the record cut that’s 100% Allen Collins… That is his masterpiece on the guitar solo and the rhythm.
    Gary Rossington plays the slide
Ed king done some acoustic guitar in the background
