    It’s music like this that turned us all into southern rock fans! If you’re ever somewhere, like an event or something, and someone yells “Play Free Bird!” - this is why! Lots of good music, but this is their “Stairway to Heaven” level song. I don’t think you were prepared for just how ramped up the song going to get. 😄

    Great reaction, Brandon! For a really, really good live version of this song check out Free Bird LIVE at Oakland, California (1977). The guitar "solo", by all 3 guitarists, during the 2nd half of the song is truly epic.

    The guitar sound of the 70s is unique. An instrumental performance that contributed to "FREE BIRD" becoming a classic. "Epic", did you say? This is the exact qualifier. Thanks.

    Oh man, I can't tell you how much I feel a connection to this band... even though I didn't know any of the members of the band personally. There was a documentary I saw in the theaters that came out in the 70's about the band called "If I Leave Here Tomorrow". If memory serves me right, it came out just before the plane crash that killed 3 of the members. That crash had a huge impact on me since I just saw the film. I remember learning they named themselves Lynard Skynyrd after one of their gym teachers. And, Gary Rossington who was the only surviving member of the original band lived in the area where I live. Back in 2014 Gary wanted to do something special for the community he lived in and threw a "Free" concert. I couldn't find anyone who wanted to go with me, so I went by myself. 'Amazing' doesn't even describe how great the concert was. I'm so glad I went. God rest his soul as he just died a few months back.

      Yeah you're right, just looked it up again. When I wrote my comment, I did a quick google search to see if I could find the title of the documentary I saw. The one I saw was back around '75 or '76. Hard to remember the title almost 50 years later. There will never be band like Lynyrd Skynryd again.

      @jamesmontgomery9523 Год назад +2

      @@l-bird Possibly what you saw was the mini-documentary on the band to promote their what turned out to be last tour. They showed it in theaters before some movies. It is the only on "film" interview of Ronnie as he and Gary are fishing and he talks about Freebird.

    LOVE this performance, best guitar/s solo at that time! Simply amazing!! In 1977, started at my community college and Lynyrd Skynyrd was a big part of that!! Sadly, three months later in October, a plane crash would take the lives of three of their band members! 😢 SWEET HOME ALABAMA next …

    Wow Brandon it's hard to believe you never heard of this before. Possibly one of the most famous Rock songs ever. Freebird always a great favourite of 'air guitarists'. Every Juke Box in 70s had this played to death on it. The second part when it speeds up still sounds as good as ever. They also had great songs too but this is without doubt their most famous.

    This is beyond a classic song and my second favorite band, after Pink Floyd. You'll probably hear this a lot through the comments, three things: 1. Now that you have heard the studio recording, at some point in the future you MUST watch this live. As exceptional as LS was in the studio, they were out of this world live. It's a band that actually sounds better live as they were all true musicians. 2. They have a great library of music to listen to. 3. This song became so legendary that, to this day, during concerts with other bands, someone will often shout out "FREE BIRD!" in an amusing request to get them to play this anthem.

    Free Bird LIVE at Oakland, California (1977) is an excellent performance. Sadly, several members died in a plane crash the same year, and of the band’s survivors, at least one was permanently injured. The solo from this live performance is definitely in the top 5 guitar solos for me (along with Pink Floyd Comfortably Numb at Pulse). Free Bird live at Oakland is a must see.

    Now you must do it live. Skynyrd added a classically trained pianist later, Billy Powell and he added some great touches to the song. Oakland Coliseum in 1977 is the favorite of many but I prefer Knebworth Festival in 1976 as LS ticked off Mick Jagger by jumping on his custom tongue catwalk with the guitar army and you got to see the guitarists in fantastic form! The Stones refused to come out for hours till the crowd's frenzy died down because there was no way they could maintain Lynyrd Skynyrd's energy!

    Quintessential Rock anthem of the 70s and of all time. It has become synonymous with rock and roll itself. Go to almost any Rock concert through the 70s 80s and 90s and you can bet at some point someone will yell out 'Freebird!' ... as much a stamp of approval than it was a request. If this is truly your first time hearing it, congratulations. You have finally arrived. 😏

    In the studio version, Allen Collins does the solo himself. Not sure if I'm using the right technical terms, but they laid a second track over the first. And the first line of the song is something Allen's girlfriend (later wife) said to him during an argument.

    A few other Skynyrd classics:
    That Smell
    Gimme Three Steps
    Tuesday's Gone
    Simple Man(have kleenex handy, a tear-jerker)
    Yes, Ronnie Van Zant is the only lead singer for them, save one song I can't recall
