This was a joy to watch. Not just for the obvious pure joy of Kels reaction, but seeing Rich’s face giving us the viewer the knowing look because he knows that we know, and knowing that we know that he knows whats coming as this master of a track starts to build up. Great stuff, such an all time classic

I remember I first heard Free Bird in my friends basement when they were failing it on guitar hero but I liked the background instrumental so I went on the computer and listened to it with headphones and I remember being speechless when the never ending solo hit and made them listen and they agreed to give up lol

HUH???? WHAT???? It's 10 min of scales and bending the strings!!!!!! What is so awesome about it? I could never understand it!!!! It's a mundane riff with 2 semi talented guitarists doing minor scales, noodling, and string bends over it. Far far far far from the best solo ever. You just made many many many guitarists sick and a lot of others roll over in their graves.

Love seeing people hear this for the first time. That solo is (arguably) the best solo ever written. They don't go off on a tangent and just wail away. They stay with the beat and fill it in. And just keep going and going and going.
The live version (either one) is just amazing. Can't wait.
PS: You have to watch NoLifeShaq react to this. He walks out of the room speechless. Hilarious.

Rossington-Collins Band were most of the surviving members of Lynyrd Skynyrd named for the two founding guitar players Gary Rossington and Allen Collins. They made two fantastic albums before Allen Collins was seriously injured in an auto accident. After that Skynyrd reunited and have been touring ever since. Two must listen two songs are “Opportunity” and “Don’t Misunderstand Me” from their debut album. I saw them in concert in ‘81 and they closed the show with Freebird as an instrumental. They would place Ronnie Van Zant’s hat on the microphone stand sitting in the middle of the stage. The crowd would sing the words and it was bone chilling, goosebump moment.

    • @ElizabethJohnson-ss4ce

Timing is off. Allen's wife died in 1980 and he started to get really bad. Gary got married and moved to Montana to straighten himself out and start a family. Allen then started the Allen Collins Band, but his drug/alcohol abuse had gotten too bad at that point. His accident was in 1986 and he was paralyzed from the waist down, unable to play the guitar again. He died in 1990 from pneumonia.

It is so cool to share these things with someone you love, I have become so much closer with my mom since my dad passed - one of the things we do now, is take road trips and since she has sirius radio there is obviously plenty of genres to listen to, she is 74 tomorrow and has only listened to music of the 50s when she was growing up and CLASSIC country - there are plenty of songs she doesn't care for and that is understandable, but when she hears something she likes and has never heard, I feel like I have broadened her horizon, and that is a cool feeling - by the way she now loves Skynard(really not that for from classic country) - good job guys, keep up the good work, music is one thing that brings people closer

Yes,it's hard to believe that Kel has never heard Freebird before but I suppose if you've been raised with a purely classical upbringing then it's not so surprising.I was lucky to see Skynyrd in 1975 in Cardiff in S.Wales,UK.As a seventeen year old kid at the time, they completely blew my mind as they were one off the first live bands I'd seen. After many years and hundreds of live shows later they still rate in my top ten live bands.

I never get tired of watching people's 1st reaction to Freebird. So proud of my home town boys from my neighborhood in Jacksonville (the birthplace of southern rock) Funny thing when I was a teenager and this started playing Freebird on the am radio here in Jax they always cutoff the guitar solo. I soon found FM radio where they played the whole song. That was the day am radio died for me. Listening to the boys then was like candy for my ears. Then I found out that they were from right here where I lived. Instant Heroes! lol

I get the historical relevance of this song ,but I have heard it a 1000 times to many. For an April Fool's day joke, I created a Spotify playlist that had Freebird every 3rd song. The guys at work were pulling their hair out. I also included Layla, Hey Jude , and November Rain. I was not a popular guy that day, as I was the only one who had control of the tunes. They suffered greatly for 3 hours before I turned it off.....😜

What's amazing about Freebird is you don't expect the guitarfest to come, it is almost like a church hymn at first, then the fireworks. Even after oh, about fifty times for me, it is still fresh. Genius song, still miss Mr Van Zant's superb, always " just right" vocals, a bit of wisdom lyrically, as usual, from LS. Kel just jumped in and swam with it, glad to see. Rock on,love the site.

Who has been listening to Skynyrd since 1975, Did not to see the original group but did see them in 2001, it was awsome, they opened for ZZ TOP, i love me some ZZ TOP, but Skynyrd blew them away! Need to listen to #T-FORTEXAS#1977OKLAND.

Wow. I LOVED watching this. You two had such genuine simultaneous reactions! Rich was so excited to watch Kel experience it, and Kel - your giggles and smiles perfectly sum up how this song feels. I'm curious if you got goosebumps, lol! This is one of these songs I always get goosebumps from.

I love the live version... watch it when Ronnie pushes the boys out on the giant Rolling Stones sacred outter stage that they were told to stay off of by Mick ! Ronnie said screw that these guys are shreading big time they deserve the outter stage & got it ! That's rock-n-roll man 😎🤘
Request: The Faces ( I know ) I'm Losing You... live BBC 1971 Sounds on Saturday.... Kel will really love it ❤
