This reminds me of a saying I have read years ago and that I don't recall the origins of: "Give me the strength to change the things I can change, the endurance to accept the things I can't, and the wisdom to tell both these things apart." I think this captures what wisdom is about. Being able to tell what is appropriate and then act accordingly. Thank you for making these talks publicly available. I learn a lot from this channel.

Ref AB's comments on the importance of the "tea break".
When I first came to Australia (from the USA) in 1979, I was based with the CSIRO in Canberra. Morning and afternoon communal tea breaks were not only the norm, they were pretty-much MANDATORY for all staff. I couldn't believe it!
But within a few weeks, I realised that more quality cross- and inter-disciplinary science happened during those tea breaks than ever happen in the laboratories.

Excellent...Buddhism main message seems to be detachment. "What is the dust which obscures the mirror? It is attachment to the world, avarice, envy, love of luxury and comfort, haughtiness and self-desire; this is the dust which prevents reflection of the rays of the Sun of Reality in the mirror." ~ Abdu'l-Baha, Baha'i Faith, The Promulgation of Universal Peace

A joke for Ajahn Brahm -- A buddhist monk goes and gets a vegatarian burger at the local sandwich shop. He asks for everything on it, gets his burger, and hands the man behind the counter a 20 dollar bill. The monk waits for a bit then asks the man for his change... The man behind the counter says "change comes from within".
I always enjoy these talks, sadly I have grown attached to them. This talk had some great insite and I agree with comments below, come to the US more often not just the west coast.

    • @lottewonder
      @lottewonder 9 лет назад +5

      Krystal Kan
lazyness is a source of wisdom, and invention !
many, many invention where motivated by lazyness, f.e. the Computer, the guy who build the first computer, Konrad Zuse, a German, came up with the idea, because he was too lazy to do the calculations in his head, with a pen and paper.
observe your thoughts when you feel you are lazy. many times its not lazyness but you might be overwhelmed by what you think you have to do.
analyse the stuff you think you have to do,...is it REALLY nessecary ?
Many times you will come to the Point where you find : its just NOT worth it.
These Days there a zillion things to Do, that just DONT make sense.
Many Times Lazyness is an answer to this, cause running after more money, fame or what ever just dosent make sense if you REALLY give it some thought.
Achieving stuff is great, but also dangerous, because it rises your sense of EGO. whatch those super succsessfull People, many of them ar super ignorant, disrespectfull people.
Lazy People normally dont beat others, or kill others ( if they ARE REALLY LAZY ) cause its just too much of a Deal of Energy.
Its those willpower driven people, who turn into Beasts, normally when they DONT get what they REALLY want.
Lazyness is also the MAJOR Goal for MANY PEOPLE; they say if i make a Million Dollar, i DONT have to work any more,..so then they finally can hang around and be lazy.
Cars, Trains, Machines,...they where invented to make Life EASYIER,...
      Best

A man asked his wife to be buried with his entire fortune (over a $5mil), when he died she did just as he said.
When her friend asked if she had done what he asked, she said "of course! I am a faithful wife."
She was then asked how she would support her family if she buried him with his fortune. She said "if he ever cashes that check I left in his coffin, I may be in trouble. Until then, I will be just fine."

I want to let go I really do but physically I'm not in a position to be able to, I know my circumstances need to change but every day is a fight to both maintain and improve them
There is litterally too many things to do and only me to do it forever trying to catch up and I am scared I will die young
    What do I do :(

i don't think Jon Kabat Zinn would tell you to scrap the shit of your shoe. his work/writings have helped many people with mental illness. i don't know what he does with is money.... but his work is impt.

Personal these days are highly dispensable. Companies don't care how much experience you have or how much work you do, you are just a number and really replaceable sadly.

No, you cannot delete your past, if it were that easy there wouldn't be so much suffering in the world. Sorry Ajahn Brahm. I love you dearly but that isn't something anyone can do .... that easily.

Ok I appreciate this man but let's be realistic here. This monk is living in a monastery as a monk. He is not out in the real world dealing with real life. I too enjoy his teachings but take it with a pinch of salt. In my experience not makes plans has led to disaster. I am 42 now and very keen to meet someone and have a baby. Has I been more focused 20 years ago I would not be do vulnerable now. In fact I have been vulnerable most of my life because nobody told me the facts of life . Ladies out there please listen to me. Men do not need to worry about making babies like we do have the same worries like we so please don't drift for years like I did. Nothing wrong with making plans but don't be ridget about it maybe is what he should say . If you don't have focus you will wake up 50 and be depressed cos you didn't stop to think what you want in life and make sacrifices to get them.

I totally agree Betty and am really glad you said this. I love Ajahn Brahm I do and his talks have given me great peace and respite from the stresses of modern life but...they dont make them go away and while we are living in this world they can't it is impossible.
I'm (only) 33 and I'm stressed to the max all day nearly every day because of my situation financially, geographically, socially and because of my past and every time I put in effort to improve it I get so exhausted because everything is working against me I just end up bed bound from burn out and am beginning to get really scared of what my future holds because there is less and less options as time goes on and i get tireder
We do need to keep a stable view of reality otherwise it will come back to bite us :(
If i were to just let go of everything as much as i seriously would love to and i WOULD I have no clothes to keep me warm, have to rely on everyone around me to survive and would starve or become malnourished, I already am on the brink of it and it's the opposite of living
I hope you are okay anyhow, i like that commenters post under these videos they've given me a sense of feeling less alone
      All the best to you
